DJzee | I'm running xubuntu 11.10. I am receiving authentication errors when I try to download security updates. How do I fix this? | 01:52 |

DJzee | Or would it be best for me to just download 12.04 since I plan to upgrade anyway | 01:55 |

xubuntu830 | has anybody had this problem with DVDFab not working | 20:29 |
Unit193 | Never used it, but did you check the appdb? | 20:29 |
xubuntu830 | sorry but what is appdb | 20:30 |
Pici | !appdb | 20:30 |
ubottu | The Wine Application DB is a database of applications and help for !Windows programs that run under !WINE: http://appdb.winehq.org - Join #winehq for application help | 20:30 |
xubuntu830 | i'll check thanks | 20:31 |
KubuntuNerd | Greetings all. I'm having some problems with Xubuntu 12.04 on some P3 machines (1 GHz, 512 MB of RAM). Is anyone up for taking on my questions? | 21:49 |
GridCube | !anyone | KubuntuNerd | 21:49 |
ubottu | KubuntuNerd: A high percentage of the first questions asked in this channel start with "Does anyone/anybody..." Why not ask your next question (the real one) and find out? See also !details, !gq, and !poll. | 21:49 |
KubuntuNerd | I did that yesterday and was totally ignored. Wondered if a polite approach would get me a response. | 21:49 |
Unit193 | Not much for Xubuntu to run on though, is it even PAE compatible? | 21:50 |
KubuntuNerd | At any rate. | 21:50 |
KubuntuNerd | Um, ok, what's PAE? | 21:50 |
GridCube | :) KubuntuNerd ask away | 21:50 |
GridCube | !pae | 21:50 |
ubottu | To use more than ~3.2GB RAM on a 32bit system you can install the PAE-enabled kernel. See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EnablingPAE for more info | 21:50 |
GridCube | (in any case 12.04 xubuntu is still non pae compatible) | 21:51 |
KubuntuNerd | Ok, with the regular live/install CD, if I select "Install" at the first screen I get a "Fatal error" during the install. If I select "Try" and attempt to install it from the live CD desktop the installation just disappears after a bit with no error message. The Alternate CD works ok but once it's installed, I can't view youtube videos even though the flashplayer is installed (from the repo). I gotten these exact same results | 21:54 |
KubuntuNerd | Yesterday I downloaded both ISO files again and burned new CDs. No change in results. | 21:54 |
GridCube | KubuntuNerd, i see, the alternate version is the best approach to your case | 21:56 |
GridCube | the flash issue probably depends of your ram, sadly late versions of ff are very memory hungry | 21:57 |
GridCube | you could try using chromium or midori | 21:57 |
GridCube | you could also try the flash-aid add-on for firefox, it supposedly costumizes the flash installation to get better results | 21:58 |
Unit193 | Chromium isn't any better, really. | 21:58 |
David-A | KubuntuNerd: what graphic card? have you tried with and without proprietary driver? | 21:58 |
GridCube | no, problaby no Unit193, you are correct | 21:58 |
KubuntuNerd | Some of the machines have 32 MB TNT cards in them. | 22:03 |
KubuntuNerd | It acts like the flashplayer isn't installed at all. I get a blank gray field or, in some cases, black box with nothing in it. | 22:05 |
KubuntuNerd | Didn't occur to me to try Chrome because I like to stay with what's in the repo. I suppose I could try Chromium. | 22:06 |
GridCube | KubuntuNerd, if the flashplayer isnt installed the page ask you to install it, if you get just a black box its a different issue | 22:07 |
KubuntuNerd | Granted | 22:07 |
GridCube | you can check that you have the current flashplayer going to http://get.adobe.com/es/flashplayer/ | 22:07 |
GridCube | and it will say if you have it installed | 22:07 |
Unit193 | Also, chome comes with pepperflash while chromium doesn't. | 22:07 |
David-A | KubuntuNerd: go to address "about:plugins" in firefox or chromium to see if there is a flash player | 22:08 |
KubuntuNerd | I'm reinstalling from the alternate CD at the moment. I'll look into it once this install is finished. I had the same issues a few days ago with a 1.8 GHz Athlon system that's got 768 MB of RAM. I 'm giving these p3 machines to some single moms. I thought they were all good to go. I was wrong. | 22:12 |
GridCube | :P | 22:13 |
GridCube | probably lubuntu is a better option? | 22:14 |
KubuntuNerd | They're a little slow but Firefox works ok and the game I installed run ok (Frozen Bubble, Flobopuyo and a few more). | 22:14 |
Unit193 | Type or copy to the terminal grep pae /proc/cpuinfo too though. | 22:16 |
KubuntuNerd | I burned a Lubuntu disk but haven't really messed with it much. These are mainly going to be used by kids, 12 and under who've never seen anything but Windows. I felt Xfce would be more user friendly. | 22:16 |
KubuntuNerd | Ok Unit 193, I'll hook up another of them, check pae and get back with you. | 22:18 |
Unit193 | Just whenever you get a chance. | 22:18 |
KubuntuNerd | Ok, grep pae sends the terminal into limbo. Just for grins I ran it on this machine (Kubuntu 12.04 LTS, P4, 2 GB RAM) and got the same result. | 22:29 |
KubuntuNerd | I think this thing may have timed out on me so I refreshed the page and started over. | 22:34 |
KubuntuNerd | grep pae sends the terminal into limbo. Just for grins I ran it on this machine (Kubuntu 12.04 LTS, P4, 2 GB RAM) and got the same result. | 22:34 |
KubuntuNerd | youtube works ok on this machien. | 22:34 |
KubuntuNerd | Though the keyboard seems to have some sort of glitch (damn thing can't spell correctly). | 22:36 |
Unit193 | That's great, glad you got it. Sounds like you forgot the file part, grep pae /proc/cpuinfo | 22:36 |
KubuntuNerd | ok I'll try that again.' | 22:36 |
KubuntuNerd | Ok that had a lengthy return which I'll type out if you wish but pae was on the list. | 22:43 |
Unit193 | Great. | 22:45 |
KubuntuNerd | Any further thoughts? | 22:45 |
GridCube | check other browsers | 22:46 |
KubuntuNerd | Can't do that right now. I've only got one bench connection and it's tied up with the one I'm reinstalling. | 22:47 |
GridCube | :) | 22:47 |
KubuntuNerd | I'll be back [call me Arnold]. ttfn | 22:48 |
nkei0 | So... I have 12.04 installed and I love it so far. However, I may have messed up when I was installing and selected the en_GB locale. I am in GB, but I prefer the en_US keyboard. How do I change this? It allows me to select on startup splash but defaults to the GB and I want to use autologin... | 23:58 |
