xubuntuTXI did a google search on the problem and wasn't able to find anything specifically related.03:35

xubuntu830hello, running xbuntu 12.04 with wine 1.5 - DVDfab is not working. it worked with ubuntu20:24
xubuntu830has anybody had this problem with DVDFab not working20:29
Unit193Never used it, but did you check the appdb?20:29
xubuntu830sorry but what is appdb20:30
Pici!appdb20:30
ubottuThe Wine Application DB is a database of applications and help for !Windows programs that run under !WINE: http://appdb.winehq.org - Join #winehq for application help20:30
xubuntu830i'll check thanks20:31
KubuntuNerdGreetings all.  I'm having some problems with Xubuntu 12.04 on some P3 machines (1 GHz, 512 MB of RAM).  Is anyone up for taking on my questions?21:49
GridCube!anyone | KubuntuNerd21:49
ubottuKubuntuNerd: A high percentage of the first questions asked in this channel start with "Does anyone/anybody..." Why not ask your next question (the real one) and find out? See also !details, !gq, and !poll.21:49
KubuntuNerdI did that yesterday and was totally ignored.  Wondered if a polite approach would get me a response.21:49
Unit193Not much for Xubuntu to run on though, is it even PAE compatible?21:50
KubuntuNerdAt any rate.21:50
KubuntuNerdUm, ok, what's PAE?21:50
GridCube:) KubuntuNerd ask away21:50
GridCube!pae21:50
ubottuTo use more than ~3.2GB RAM on a 32bit system you can install the PAE-enabled kernel. See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EnablingPAE for more info21:50
GridCube(in any case 12.04 xubuntu is still non pae compatible)21:51
KubuntuNerdOk, with the regular live/install CD, if I select "Install" at the first screen I get a "Fatal error" during the install.  If I select "Try" and attempt to install it from the live CD desktop the installation just disappears after a bit with no error message.  The Alternate CD works ok but once it's installed, I can't view youtube videos even though the flashplayer is installed (from the repo).  I gotten these exact same results 21:54
KubuntuNerdYesterday I downloaded both ISO files again and burned new CDs.  No change in results.21:54
GridCubeKubuntuNerd, i see, the alternate version is the best approach to your case21:56
GridCubethe flash issue probably depends of your ram, sadly late versions of ff are very memory hungry21:57
GridCubeyou could try using chromium or midori21:57
GridCubeyou could also try the flash-aid add-on for firefox, it supposedly costumizes the flash installation to get better results21:58
Unit193Chromium isn't any better, really.21:58
David-AKubuntuNerd: what graphic card? have you tried with and without proprietary driver?21:58
GridCubeno, problaby no Unit193, you are correct21:58
KubuntuNerdSome of the machines have 32 MB TNT cards in them.22:03
KubuntuNerdIt acts like the flashplayer isn't installed at all.  I get a blank gray field or, in some cases, black box with nothing in it.22:05
KubuntuNerdDidn't occur to me to try Chrome because I like to stay with what's in the repo.  I suppose I could try Chromium.22:06
GridCubeKubuntuNerd, if the flashplayer isnt installed the page ask you to install it, if you get just a black box its a different issue22:07
KubuntuNerdGranted22:07
GridCubeyou can check that you have the current flashplayer going to http://get.adobe.com/es/flashplayer/22:07
GridCubeand it will say if you have it installed22:07
Unit193Also, chome comes with pepperflash while chromium doesn't.22:07
David-AKubuntuNerd: go to address "about:plugins" in firefox or chromium to see if there is a flash player22:08
KubuntuNerdI'm reinstalling from the alternate CD at the moment.  I'll look into it once this install is finished.   I had the same issues a few days ago with a 1.8 GHz Athlon system that's got 768 MB of RAM.  I 'm giving these p3 machines to some single moms.  I thought they were all good to go.  I was wrong.22:12
GridCube:P22:13
GridCubeprobably lubuntu is a better option?22:14
KubuntuNerdThey're a little slow but Firefox works ok and the game I installed run ok (Frozen Bubble, Flobopuyo and a few more).22:14
Unit193Type or copy to the terminal  grep pae /proc/cpuinfo  too though.22:16
KubuntuNerdI burned a Lubuntu disk but haven't really messed with it much.    These are mainly going to be used by kids, 12 and under who've never seen anything but Windows.  I felt Xfce would be more user friendly.22:16
KubuntuNerdOk Unit 193, I'll hook up another of them, check pae and get back with you.22:18
Unit193Just whenever you get a chance.22:18
KubuntuNerdOk, grep pae sends the terminal into limbo.   Just for grins I  ran it on this machine (Kubuntu 12.04 LTS, P4, 2 GB RAM) and got the same result.22:29
KubuntuNerdI think this thing may have timed out on me so I refreshed the page and started over.22:34
KubuntuNerdgrep pae sends the terminal into limbo.   Just for grins I  ran it on this machine (Kubuntu 12.04 LTS, P4, 2 GB RAM) and got the same result.22:34
KubuntuNerdyoutube works ok on this machien.22:34
KubuntuNerdThough the keyboard seems to have some sort of glitch (damn thing can't spell correctly).22:36
Unit193That's great, glad you got it.  Sounds like you forgot the file part, grep pae /proc/cpuinfo22:36
KubuntuNerdok I'll try that again.'22:36
KubuntuNerdOk that had a lengthy return which I'll type out if you wish but pae was on the list.22:43
Unit193Great.22:45
KubuntuNerdAny further thoughts?22:45
GridCubecheck other browsers22:46
KubuntuNerdCan't do that right now.  I've only got one bench connection and it's tied up with the one I'm reinstalling.22:47
GridCube:)22:47
KubuntuNerdI'll be back [call me Arnold].  ttfn22:48
nkei0So... I have 12.04 installed and I love it so far.  However, I may have messed up when I was installing and selected the en_GB locale.  I am in GB, but I prefer the en_US keyboard.  How do I change this?  It allows me to select on startup splash but defaults to the GB and I want to use autologin...23:58
nkei0How do I fix?23:58
