[01:52] I'm running xubuntu 11.10. I am receiving authentication errors when I try to download security updates. How do I fix this? [01:55] Or would it be best for me to just download 12.04 since I plan to upgrade anyway [02:27] How do I fix authentication errors? === `mOOse` is now known as m00se [03:34] Greetings all. I'm tweaking a new install of Xubuntu 12.04 LTS and can't get it to play youtube videos. Have I overlooked something? [03:35] I did a google search on the problem and wasn't able to find anything specifically related. [03:37] Hello? [20:30] sorry but what is appdb [20:30] !appdb [20:30] The Wine Application DB is a database of applications and help for !Windows programs that run under !WINE: http://appdb.winehq.org - Join #winehq for application help [20:31] i'll check thanks [21:49] Greetings all. I'm having some problems with Xubuntu 12.04 on some P3 machines (1 GHz, 512 MB of RAM). Is anyone up for taking on my questions? [21:49] !anyone | KubuntuNerd [21:49] KubuntuNerd: A high percentage of the first questions asked in this channel start with "Does anyone/anybody..." Why not ask your next question (the real one) and find out? See also !details, !gq, and !poll. [21:49] I did that yesterday and was totally ignored. Wondered if a polite approach would get me a response. [21:50] Not much for Xubuntu to run on though, is it even PAE compatible? [21:50] At any rate. [21:50] Um, ok, what's PAE? [21:50] :) KubuntuNerd ask away [21:50] !pae [21:50] To use more than ~3.2GB RAM on a 32bit system you can install the PAE-enabled kernel. See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EnablingPAE for more info [21:51] (in any case 12.04 xubuntu is still non pae compatible) [21:54] Ok, with the regular live/install CD, if I select "Install" at the first screen I get a "Fatal error" during the install. If I select "Try" and attempt to install it from the live CD desktop the installation just disappears after a bit with no error message. The Alternate CD works ok but once it's installed, I can't view youtube videos even though the flashplayer is installed (from the repo). I gotten these exact same results [21:54] Yesterday I downloaded both ISO files again and burned new CDs. No change in results. [21:56] KubuntuNerd, i see, the alternate version is the best approach to your case [21:57] the flash issue probably depends of your ram, sadly late versions of ff are very memory hungry [21:57] you could try using chromium or midori [21:58] you could also try the flash-aid add-on for firefox, it supposedly costumizes the flash installation to get better results [21:58] Chromium isn't any better, really. [21:58] KubuntuNerd: what graphic card? have you tried with and without proprietary driver? [21:58] no, problaby no Unit193, you are correct [22:03] Some of the machines have 32 MB TNT cards in them. [22:05] It acts like the flashplayer isn't installed at all. I get a blank gray field or, in some cases, black box with nothing in it. [22:06] Didn't occur to me to try Chrome because I like to stay with what's in the repo. I suppose I could try Chromium. [22:07] KubuntuNerd, if the flashplayer isnt installed the page ask you to install it, if you get just a black box its a different issue [22:07] Granted [22:07] you can check that you have the current flashplayer going to http://get.adobe.com/es/flashplayer/ [22:07] and it will say if you have it installed [22:07] Also, chome comes with pepperflash while chromium doesn't. [22:08] KubuntuNerd: go to address "about:plugins" in firefox or chromium to see if there is a flash player [22:12] I'm reinstalling from the alternate CD at the moment. I'll look into it once this install is finished. I had the same issues a few days ago with a 1.8 GHz Athlon system that's got 768 MB of RAM. I 'm giving these p3 machines to some single moms. I thought they were all good to go. I was wrong. [22:13] :P [22:14] probably lubuntu is a better option? [22:14] They're a little slow but Firefox works ok and the game I installed run ok (Frozen Bubble, Flobopuyo and a few more). [22:16] Type or copy to the terminal grep pae /proc/cpuinfo too though. [22:16] I burned a Lubuntu disk but haven't really messed with it much. These are mainly going to be used by kids, 12 and under who've never seen anything but Windows. I felt Xfce would be more user friendly. [22:18] Ok Unit 193, I'll hook up another of them, check pae and get back with you. [22:18] Just whenever you get a chance. [22:29] Ok, grep pae sends the terminal into limbo. Just for grins I ran it on this machine (Kubuntu 12.04 LTS, P4, 2 GB RAM) and got the same result. [22:34] I think this thing may have timed out on me so I refreshed the page and started over. [22:34] grep pae sends the terminal into limbo. Just for grins I ran it on this machine (Kubuntu 12.04 LTS, P4, 2 GB RAM) and got the same result. [22:34] youtube works ok on this machien. [22:36] Though the keyboard seems to have some sort of glitch (damn thing can't spell correctly). [22:36] That's great, glad you got it. Sounds like you forgot the file part, grep pae /proc/cpuinfo [22:36] ok I'll try that again.' [22:43] Ok that had a lengthy return which I'll type out if you wish but pae was on the list. [22:45] Great. [22:45] Any further thoughts? [22:46] check other browsers [22:47] Can't do that right now. I've only got one bench connection and it's tied up with the one I'm reinstalling. [22:47] :) [22:48] I'll be back [call me Arnold]. ttfn [23:58] So... I have 12.04 installed and I love it so far. However, I may have messed up when I was installing and selected the en_GB locale. I am in GB, but I prefer the en_US keyboard. How do I change this? It allows me to select on startup splash but defaults to the GB and I want to use autologin... [23:58] How do I fix?
