bkmUnit193: thx! not that i will remember, but it _is_ possible!00:25
TurtleRrNew to *nix, but basically I'd like to completely erase a hard drive (plugged into an external enclosure) including "removing the GPT partition table"02:55
TurtleRrthe drives are seagate 3TB drives, and are only seen as ~780gb when I run partitionmanager02:56
holsteini would use a gparted live CD.. or gparted from an ubuntu live CD.. unless you want it zero'd for some reason02:56
TurtleRris there a hardware limitation possibly with the enclosure?02:57
TurtleRrI pulled it out of an external 1.5TB drive, so showing 800gb seems funny02:57
TurtleRrholstein: I can't do it from within lubuntu?02:57
holsteinTurtleRr: i use a live CD.. could be a lubuntu live CD02:58
holsteinyou wont be able to erase the hard drive you are using02:58
holsteinyou could blow out a partition, but they'll always be some partition you cant wipe02:59
=== CTtechguy_ is now known as CTtechguy
TurtleRri just want to erase the drive that is connected via USB03:07
TurtleRrnot the OS drive03:07
holsteinTurtleRr: i would open gpart03:07
holsteingparted*03:07
holsteingksudo gparted TurtleRr03:07
TurtleRrgksudo ?03:08
TurtleRris that different from sudo ?03:08
holsteinTurtleRr: yeah.. its sudo for graphical applications03:08
holstein!sudo03:08
ubottusudo is a command to run command-line programs with superuser privileges ("root") (also see !cli). Look at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RootSudo for more information. For graphical applications see !gksu (GNOME, Xfce), or !kdesudo (KDE). If you're unable to execute commands with sudo see: http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/fixsudo03:08
TurtleRr"unable to locate theme engine in module_path"03:09
Unit193http://psychocats.net/ubuntu/graphicalsudo to know the difference.03:09
TurtleRrcan i install using the synaptic package manager?03:10
holsteinTurtleRr: gparted? its in the repos... install it how you like.. synaptic works well03:11
TurtleRrhrmm so gparted seems to see the same thing03:12
TurtleRrrecognizes drive as 746.52gb03:12
holsteinwhat is it?.. are there several partitions?03:12
holsteinrun in a terminal.. sudo fdisk -l03:13
TurtleRrit doesnt recognize any of them03:13
holsteinyou can paste that if you like03:13
TurtleRrso /dev/sdb: 801.6gb03:15
TurtleRrsystem GPT03:15
TurtleRrthe drive is from a NAS so the software RAID may not be readable, I just wanted to erase the drive and specifically the gpt table03:16
holsteinTurtleRr: what RAID?03:16
TurtleRrI believe RAID 103:17
holsteinthats likely the issue..03:17
holsteini would take the drives out, or maintain it like the manufacturer suggests03:17
holsteinOR, just wipe it as is.. its proably doing redundant storage03:17
TurtleRryeah I just want to erase them so the NAS reinstalls its firmware and sets them up again03:17
TurtleRrhow can I wipe the gpt tables ?03:18
holsteinTurtleRr: in the menu in gparted03:18
TurtleRr"create partition table" ?03:18
TurtleRrso just create for example a DOS partition table?03:18
holsteinTurtleRr: i dont know... depends on what you have, and what you want03:19
TurtleRri guess my question is, if I only see 800gb of the drive, and as I understand the GPT partition table is at the end of the drive physically03:19
TurtleRris there a hardware limitation stopping gparted from seeing the whole contents/03:19
TurtleRrwould booting from a live usb help?03:20
holsteinTurtleRr: if you dont know for certain, i bet its redundant03:23
holsteinthats what i would expect to see...03:23
holsteinTurtleRr: it wont be gparted.. it could be the driver support.. but it'll likely just not see the device03:23
holsteini would look at the manufactures information on how you are expected to format or wipe the drives03:24
holsteini would either do that, or emulate the process03:24
TurtleRrwill give it a shot, thanks!03:26
holsteinTurtleRr: sure.. we'll talk about emulating that process when you find it, if you need :)03:27
WaynesI want to make my second screen work but the AMD Catalyst Control Center wants me to start it with administrative rights in order to fiddle with these settings and I don't know the name of the program to start it from command line.14:00
Platypus-Manyesterday I tried installing Ubuntu desktop edition 64-bit on a PC, but after filling out the info in the "who are you"-setup page, I can't hit continue... waiting for all the files to copy didin't help, and today I tried downloading 64-bit with torrent to make sure md5sum was okay, and also tried 32-bit torrent - but I can't get past this step... any tips?16:05
Dice-Manhi17:07
Dice-Mani solved my ssh problem by looking at auth.log17:07
Dice-Manthere was a problem with the listen address17:08
Dice-Mani solved it then sshd automatically start on booting17:08
bkm/apps/gnome-power-manager/lock/gnome_keyring_hibernate in gconf-editor <- is there a lubuntu equivalent method of accessing this file/whatever so that ssh-agent sessions will survive a hibernation?17:24
