KiteHawkHello I've been working on installing ubuntu 12.04 for a few days now. I'm trying to setup a audio production studio and i'm wandering if ubuntu12.04 was the way to go. I loaded airtime 2 and tested it for long play capabilities last night and it crashed before this morning. I havent been able to find anyone who knows why mixxx wont start. sometimes i can get the preference panel to pop up but thats it. Any Ideas?14:44
len-dtKiteHawk, are you setting up/running jack first?14:46
KiteHawki finally got jack server to run but don't think anything is connected to it14:46
KiteHawki have pulse, alsa, jack14:47
holsteinlook and see.. try making some sound with something you know will work .. consider a non JACK option14:47
KiteHawki can get playback no prob but my input stream is still not working14:48
holsteinKiteHawk: playback in JACK?14:48
KiteHawkhonestly im not sure how to test jack because i never have had success with jack until now that it finally works i think. I dont know much about JACK14:49
KiteHawkhow do i check JACK14:49
len-dtmixxx as it comes from the ubuntu repo is compiled with no pulse.14:49
holsteinKiteHawk: i typically connect something... like audacious... something i know will just play a known good sound file14:50
KiteHawkwell i can play sound files but how do i know jack has anything to do with that?14:50
ailohydrogen is a good program that is easy to get sound off14:50
ailoKiteHawk: Did you start jack using qjackctl?14:51
KiteHawkyes14:51
ailoKiteHawk: Look in "Connect"14:51
KiteHawkyes ailo14:51
KiteHawkok14:51
ailoKiteHawk: What software are you using to play sounds?14:51
KiteHawki think alsa14:52
holsteinKiteHawk: you will connect something like audacious14:52
holsteinsome sound creating or playing software.. like hydrogen14:52
KiteHawkok one sec ill load it14:52
len-dtOk I downloaded mixxx, it connects in jack by default.14:52
KiteHawkfor some reason ive downloaded and uninstalled mixxx so many times but everytime i try and start it the icon bouces and then just goes back to sleep14:53
holsteinKiteHawk: you can always open a terminal, ans launch the application from there.. you might see helpful output there.. more feedback than the bouncing and not starting14:55
KiteHawkyes i tried that a few times as well as logged in as root to try and launch it14:56
ailoKiteHawk: Did you try hydrogen yet?14:56
KiteHawkok audacious is playing14:56
ailoKiteHawk: Do you see it in qjackctl -> Connect?14:57
KiteHawkis hydrogen better14:57
ailohydrogen is a typical jack software14:57
ailoAnd easy to get audio from14:57
KiteHawkhmm14:57
ailoIt's a tracker/drum machine14:57
holsteinKiteHawk: you wont be able to run JACK as normal user, and something else as root.. they wont connect14:57
ailoKiteHawk: Do you see audacious in Qjackctl -> Connect?14:58
KiteHawknothing there it looks like my outputs are capture and inputs are playback thats kinda odd14:58
holsteinKiteHawk: you just open a terminal and run the application as your user for the error output14:58
ailoKiteHawk: Audacious is probably not set to use jack by default14:58
ailoHydrogen is14:58
len-dtOk, mixxx even though it connected to jack the first time seems to like alsa better.14:58
KiteHawkwhere do i post the debug info14:59
holstein!pastebin | KiteHawk14:59

KiteHawkhttp://paste.ubuntu.com/1112041/15:01
len-dtcore dump15:01
KiteHawki got core dump as well before15:01
KiteHawkfinal error for mixxx15:01
ailoKiteHawk: To set audacious to use jack, you need to go to File -> Preferences -> Audio -> Output settings. Choose jack as the output plugin15:02
holsteini find, you also have to have a file playing, then it shows up in JACK15:02
ailoRight15:02
ailoKiteHawk: Also, you might need to restart the program15:03
ailoAfter making the settings change15:03
holsteinif you are uncomfortable, or unsure, restart the machine15:03
len-dtmixxx has to be set up to the same parameters as the device is set up in alsa. For example it will fail to open an alsa device if it is set to 48k and the device is set to 4410015:03
holsteini used to restart when i couldnt properly kill JACK15:03
KiteHawkah15:04
KiteHawkdamn JACK just went into a fullscreen weirdness15:04
KiteHawkok im gonna restart15:05
ailoKiteHawk: YOu mean qjackctl?15:06
ailoIsn't it just maximized?15:07
KiteHawklen-dt: you might be right about the 48k or 44100 settings i'll check on that15:07
ailoNo need to restart15:07
len-dtIt looks like Mixxx has not kept up with the libs. I see signs of gui stuff not happening when it should. I am pretty sure this was one of the apps I tried and worked for me in 12.04 beta testing.15:07
KiteHawkno i mean qctl just went crazy so im restarting no it wasnt a maximize thing checked that15:08
len-dtWarning: [Main]: Object::connect: No such slot QGroupBox::setProperty(const char*, const QVariant&) in src/skin/propertybinder.cpp:1315:08
KiteHawkthe computer was on all night and seemed to be a lil slow so restart is a good place to start for now15:08
KiteHawkweird qjackctl went fullscreen weird on me?15:14
len-dtI can't get a gui beyond the setup dialog. Lots of gui errors too about null (missing) objects.15:15
len-dtI think the package needs to be rerolled.15:15
holsteintake a screenie.. try a different user account15:16
KiteHawkcreate a new user account15:16
KiteHawk?15:19
holsteinKiteHawk: sure.. as a troubleshooting step... try as a new user15:19
holsteinthat will take your current config of the UI and everything else out of the equation15:19
len-dtremember to make the new user have the audio group15:20
holsteinor, issue everything in the terminal as gksudo15:21
holsteingksudo qjackctly ...gksudo audacious ... to troubleshoot15:21
KiteHawkk bare w me this is a remote computer and now i have to go there because my user just changed and the remote settings neede to be added. 5 mins. tnx15:22
KiteHawkok im back15:37
KiteHawkwhat should i do first?15:37
KiteHawkhello15:41
KiteHawkok jack seems to be working15:43
KiteHawkmixxx still wont start15:44
Xzui don't know but maybe you could start in a terminal and pastbin the result or search for .log file (/var/log/) or type --help in commande ligne15:47
KiteHawkhttp://paste.ubuntu.com/1112041/ im getting the same debug15:51
KiteHawkwhat does mixxx need to start15:51
KiteHawkouch too much info out there that doesnt pan out15:55
KiteHawkpeople saying ubuntu 12.04 and airtime 2 and mixxx and jack all work together im not seeing it. ug :(15:55
KiteHawkok well its quiet in here ill try back later   thanks for the help :)15:59
