=== Trixar_za is now known as Trix[a]r_za [06:01] good morning [06:45] * Kilos greets ubuntu-za [06:45] Maaz, coffee on [06:45] * Maaz starts grinding coffee [06:49] Coffee's ready for Kilos! [06:50] Maaz, ty [06:50] You are welcome Kilos [06:50] hi yusuf_ [07:17] morning maiatoday [07:17] hi Kilos [07:32] goomorning [07:32] *good morning [07:33] hi Kilos, maiatoday [07:34] hi charlvn [07:34] yo charlvn [07:39] bbl [09:44] morning all [09:48] morning superfly [09:48] how's it going [09:49] busy [09:49] taking a break right now [09:55] hi superfly and whoever i missed this morning [09:55] hi Kilos [09:56] Kilos: I wasn't around till about 10 minutes ago anyway [09:56] hehe [10:00] inetpro, you awake yet? [10:27] hi drussell all good? [10:27] we all maintain [10:30] Kilos: yup all good here, you? [10:34] good ty [11:04] hmmm...pc showed there are restricted drivers available. it is for the nvidia card. let it download and install and now cant switch workspaces. stuck on one desktop. [11:04] any ideas please [11:04] was nvidia 173 [11:05] havent even got a clue what to google for [11:07] or is there a way to switch with keyboard? [11:15] its like using winsucks [11:15] grrr [11:17] Kilos: ctrl+f1? [11:17] ctrl+f2, etc [11:17] ty superfly [11:18] aw dont work [11:24] afternoon [11:33] hi magespawn [11:33] hey superfly, what up/ [11:33] ? [11:33] nothing much [11:33] trying not to fall asleep [11:34] and the family? [11:34] shame on you, new baby keeping you giys up? [11:34] giys/guys [11:35] family is mostly fine [11:35] jojo is actually a pretty good baby [11:35] having more issues with the monster than the baby [11:38] the monster? [11:41] the 1st born? [11:41] yes [11:42] the toddler [11:43] big changes in the little ones life now too. make him? a part of it as much as possible. [11:48] magespawn: yep, doing that [11:48] hi magespawn [11:48] hey Kilos [11:49] thats the best way to handle it I have found superfly [11:49] superfly how do you stream SA radio stations in Ubuntu? [11:50] magespawn: I don't listen to much radio, but you should be able to use VLC if your default media player can't handle it [11:50] just copy the URL on the site [11:51] tried that came up with a missing pulgin MMSH. so installed the gstreamer plugin but still says pulgin is missing [11:55] duh somehow missed that plugin when I was selecting the ones to install [11:57] brb remove nvidia again now must reboot [12:01] yay got all 9 workspaces working again but no nvidia [12:04] cool Kilos. [12:04] superfly, will it be better to try get that nvidia 173 driver via synaptic [12:04] lol not cool magespawn [12:04] installed the missing plugin but still no luck with sa stations. [12:04] Kilos: that's the same one [12:05] whats the good of a fancy graphics card that you cant use [12:05] Kilos: what graphics card do you have? [12:05] installed the same way superfly ? [12:05] lspci ? [12:06] well, since you're trying to install the nvidia driver, I can only assume you know what card you have [12:06] nVidia Corporation NV34 [GeForce FX 5500] (rev a1) [12:07] i tried to install it because i got a popup screen saying there are restricted drivers available [12:07] ah, FX 5500 [12:08] thats what lspci gives [12:08] oh you know it? [12:08] Kilos: install nvidia-current [12:08] just with aptitude? [12:08] any package management app [12:09] i like aptitude, it gives you alternative fixes sometimes [12:11] good afternoon\ [12:11] phew what a hectic day [12:11] hi charlvn [12:12] voda foned last night and asked if i am happy with my connection now. was great last night [12:12] yes ty very much i said [12:13] now getting 4kB/s [12:13] grr [12:13] bah [12:13] that is not good [12:13] yesterday it jumped tween 200 and 400kB/s [12:13] 4kbps is dial-up modem speed [12:14] *4kBps [12:14] this Bytes not bits [12:14] ah [12:14] lol [12:14] yeah that's what i meant sorry [12:14] i look where i am typing so dont see incoming, sorry [12:15] yay gone to 15 kB/s [12:17] maybe the tower is too busy during the day, too many calls / too much data going in and out [12:17] ah, not the internet battling? [12:17] that's unfortunately a problem with a lot of umts systems [12:18] hmmm no idea about that but i would think vodacom would have plenty of capacity on their backbone [12:18] that crooked thing? [12:18] hehe [12:18] yeah lol [12:24] magespawn: which radio station is that? [12:24] * superfly just popped the URL from a local community station into Amarok, and it just worked [12:30] amarok is good, i usually just use vlc to play the stations and it works pretty well too [12:33] hi zeref === Trix[a]r_za is now known as Trixar_za [12:41] superfly almost any one, I am trying for east coast radio [12:41] charlvn doe listen to sa stations? [12:42] doe/do you [12:43] hi :) [12:44] okay now all of a sardine it is working [12:44] wierd [12:44] hi smile [12:45] superfly, must i install the nvidia 173 as well or is nvidia-current enough? [12:46] hi Kilos :D [12:46] Kilos: did I said nvidia-173 or nvidia-current? [12:46] aptitude did lotsa work installing that [12:47] lol you said current superfly [12:47] but didnt explain nicely that current wasnt just needed to make 173 work [12:48] like a plugin addon thingie [12:56] so magespawn tell me what is supposed to look better or different with a better graphics card? [12:57] apart from accepting unity now that is [12:58] Kilos: it usually makes your computer work slightly faster, because a lot of the GUI stuff gets handled by the graphics card instead of the CPU [12:58] oh ty superfly thats good to know [12:59] though it would be 3d and a fist would come out and punch me [12:59] haha, no [13:00] it just means that a lot of the small things that make your GUI smoother now work [13:00] great ty very much === smile is now known as smile-verweg [13:23] games videos and such should work smoother and faster. the graphics card takes some of the processing away from the cpu [13:40] magespawn: sorry for the slow response, been afk [13:40] magespawn: usually not but sometimes i listen to stations from here: http://antfarm.co.za/ [13:40] unity should also work better, compiz and the other desktop managers will allow the pretty stuff [13:41] np charlvn [13:41] east coast radio is now working had to install the right codec [13:41] ty magespawn will look into going further once i have unity on this drive [13:42] Yes, you can't have disorder on your drive [13:42] wasting data getting more stuff for maverick [13:42] hiya Trixar_za hehe [13:42] Not sounding any better [13:43] ? [13:43] There's a Linux distribution called Unity [13:43] Well, Maverick and Unity [13:43] yes thats what i am refering to [13:43] To Ubuntu terms that can be used differently :P [13:44] i have maverick here and am going to install 12.04 unity before wating more data on maverick [13:44] The Madrivia based fork that uses SMART package management? [13:44] http://unity-linux.org/ [13:44] Also it was named before the Unity desktop [13:44] :p [13:45] ah [13:45] Nice bunch of guys though [13:46] Shame about the loss of team members. Especially the Kernel experts [13:46] eish that will hurt [13:47] I was looking around at other small Linux distros when I lost faith in SliTaz's development [13:48] Funny enough, I ended up back at SliTaz and fixed the issues myself, even providing the ppp fix to correct the biggest issue I was having [13:48] I'm like a Sayan. I just come back stronger :P [13:59] ha ha ha [14:00] see you guys later [14:01] later magespawn [14:06] see you guys tonight. go home safe and enjoy supper [14:06] thats you too superfly [14:08] bbl === Trixar_za is now known as Trix[a]r_za === smile-verweg is now known as smile [16:03] * smile zingt lekker mee met http://zimnet.radio.de/ [17:04] hi all [17:04] welcome back smile [17:09] charlvn: thanks :D [17:09] do you know yfm? :p [17:10] @ charlvn [18:06] well duh! [18:06] charlvn, superfly you guys leave me to sukkel hey [18:07] nuvolari, ping [18:07] inetpro, ping jy ook [18:07] Kilos: yes :-P [18:08] hahaha no one told me a sata drive wont be seen till one has installed something from the mb cd to let it see sata drives [18:08] yo roryy [18:09] decided to install xp on that unhappy 20g drive and see if i can now install AOE3 [18:10] hi [18:10] then no audio and some other sis stuff. but luckily when ian was here years ago i copied his gigabyte cd [18:13] so how would one get to use a sata drive if the mb battery was flat and didnt remember that it must enable sata??? [18:14] Kilos: you sukkel because you make yourself sukkel [18:14] hi Tonberry tonberryE352 [18:14] lol no no no [18:14] with sata connected pc screen didnt even come on [18:15] but now i can see it just dunno how to tell bios to boot from it [18:15] Kilos: that doesn't make any sense, I've been using SATA drives for ages [18:15] then i can go 12.04 on it [18:15] no need to do anything [18:16] you most likely didnt have battery out so bios forgot about satas [18:17] its actually an instalable goodie on the gigabyte cd [18:17] seriel ATA something or other [18:17] enables sata [18:20] smile: yfm is a south african station right? didn't used to like it very much though [18:21] Kilos: yeah that is rather strange indeed, i use sata drives without any hassle [18:21] wow even if the mb battery dies [18:22] Kilos: how old is this motherboard? [18:22] oh the on-motherboard battery... ok that could be a different issue [18:22] haven't had that in a very long time [18:22] maybe its murphy that stays here [18:22] i had one or two old computers that it happened to but they were still using ide derives [18:22] we gotta ask nuvolari [18:22] *drives [18:23] this has ide too but kept looking for sata as well, but when sata drive plugged in screen didnt even come on [18:23] ah [18:23] interesting, new to me as well [18:23] haha [18:24] murphy's law [18:24] as jy kan sukkel, sal jy [18:24] lol [18:25] maybe i got the link for the mb somewhere still [18:25] brb [18:25] charlvn: yes! :p [18:25] I found it on radio.de [18:25] :) [18:30] smile: there is a list of more here: http://antfarm.co.za/antradio/index.asp [18:30] you can probably find most of them on radio.de [18:31] smile: the afrikaans radio station is this one: http://www.rsg.co.za/ [18:32] i used to listen to this: http://www.jacarandafm.com/ [18:32] thanks, charlvn [18:32] have to go, bye :) [18:33] ciao! [18:33] see ya :) [18:35] anyway now im happy, gotta 80g sata going [18:35] magespawn, AndChat|68096 wb === AndChat|68096 is now known as droidmage [18:36] Hi Kilos [18:36] haha [18:36] at work i drink this tea called "entspannung" and "innere ruhe" [18:36] Pc still signed in at the shop [18:36] it's herbal tv - need a lot of it while working on computers [18:36] ah [18:36] *herbal tea [18:37] in the evening i can go back to drinking coffee [18:37] Wow somebody who works on computer who drinks something other than coffee [18:37] magespawn: coffee on [18:37] Maaz: coffee on [18:37] * Maaz flips the salt-timer [18:37] sorry magespawn [18:37] charlvn, eat lotsa fish [18:37] Lol [18:37] tab fail [18:37] Maaz coffee please [18:37] droidmage: Done [18:37] sea fish is brain food [18:37] Maaz, coffee please [18:37] Kilos: Righto [18:38] Kilos: i take these omega 3 pills full of fish oil [18:38] it's good for the grey snot between the ears [18:38] lol ya that too [18:38] wb zeref [18:39] hey zeref why you been so quiet [18:39] ? [18:41] Coffee's ready for charlvn, droidmage and Kilos! [18:41] Maaz: thanks [18:41] charlvn: Sure [18:41] Maaz: botsnack [18:41] Yay, at last someone thinks about me as well [18:41] Maaz, thanks man [18:41] Kilos It gives me great pleasure to serve a bunch of geeks :-) [18:43] hey Squirm [18:43] hi psydroid [18:44] hi Kilos [18:44] hi Squirm [18:44] hi charlvn [18:44] hi psydroid [18:44] long time no speak to [18:45] yeah, I was away for a month [18:45] nice, holiday? [18:45] kind of, I was travelling around Europe [18:45] very cool! [18:45] i don't really do the summer holiday thing, too hot for me [18:46] :) [18:46] even in NL it has been crazy weather for a few weeks [18:46] there is no way i'm going down south when the heat wave is here [18:46] i save my holiday for october or so [18:46] that's a nice month for me [18:46] were you in NL or is that where you actually live? [18:46] how do you mean? [18:47] yeah, I didn't really plan to go [18:47] I mean, you aren't in South Africa? [18:47] eh no? [18:47] are you? :) [18:48] hmm, I never knew you were a fellow Dutchie :) [18:48] lol [18:48] that's hilarious [18:48] no he is in the netherlands [18:48] no, I've never been there either [18:48] no i used to actually live in south africa so i know the country well [18:49] ah, now I understand [18:49] well, I went to Denmark for a few weeks [18:49] it gets pretty cold in the evenings [18:49] ooh! nice [18:49] denmark is cool but they have funny power sockets [18:50] yeah [18:51] i have an europlug on my laptop so i have no problem but if you have an earthed plug it doesn't work right [18:51] you need a plug where the earth sticks into the wall like a british plug [18:52] oh, I didn't bring much with me [18:52] just my phone and my tablet [18:53] no i can't go somewher without a laptop [18:53] so I didn't have too many problems [18:53] yes, I understand [18:53] i'm actually ordering a new laptop [18:54] this one is like 5+ years old and people already make fun of me for it :) [18:54] after some serious consideration ended up ordering one of these: http://tweakers.net/pricewatch/305345/lenovo-essential-b560-(m489nmh).html [19:10] Kilos how goes it with the pc? [19:11] still no joy with booting or even getting to bios droidmage but cpu warming up at least [19:11] i dunno if it can work on a samll screen [19:11] small [19:12] but this one from nuvolari is getting better by the hour [19:16] Well at least something is working. [19:16] yeah i got the sata drive going [19:16] and the nvidia fx5500 [19:17] only found the sata after installing xp then the gigabyte cd [19:19] You had to go to windows? Wow. [19:26] lol ya [19:26] the auto install stuff on the giga cd had a place for enabling sata [19:27] found just by chance while looking for audio drivers [19:28] and to install the giga cd you first need windows [19:28] then windows cant see the sata but ubuntu can [19:29] learn something new everyday [19:29] will still get the ecs mb going as well if it wasnt sold because it was scrap [19:32] but im very happy with nuvolari s pc [19:32] especially with an extra 80g drive working [19:32] You can modify the windows cd to include sata drivers at the start. Or insert another disk with the drivers. [19:33] no man windows is for gaming only and 20g drive is ample [19:34] but as long as i dont remove the battery the mb will remember that it has sata capabilities as well [19:35] Mmm [19:36] Most people now would not have a 20 gig drive. [19:36] lol [19:36] ya [19:38] I ran a laptop from an 8 gig flash for awhile on ubuntu. [19:39] yeah i member. i see this pc can boot from usb's as well [19:45] night all. sleep tight [19:45] Night kilos [19:46] Later all. [20:19] interesting read: https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/nonfree-games.en.html [20:20] same goes for all proprietary software though [20:21] heh] [20:21] here is something interesting [20:21] we rolled ipv6 on the UFS network.... [20:21] now *50%* of the traffic coming in is on ipv6 === Trix[a]r_za is now known as Trixar_za [20:44] Symmetria: that's very interesting indeed [20:45] Symmetria: is that UFS as in http://www.ufs.ac.za/ ? [20:45] charlvn heh, we were doing over 100mbit on v6 today [20:45] yeah, webserver isnt v6 enabled yet, but all the client side is [20:45] well, most of it so far [20:45] :) [20:46] charlvn: Don't read too much into the gnu philosophy. It's sometimes self-contradicting and in other ways just plain dumb. [20:47] heh [20:47] charlvn.. here, you can read this [20:47] https://lists.afrinic.net/pipermail/afripv6-discuss/2012/001175.html [20:47] my work for the last week :p [20:47] its a pretty damn scary story :) [20:49] Symmetria: interesting, thanks! [20:50] Trixar_za: i find a lot of it to be somewhat fanatical but it's still interesting food for thought [20:50] Trixar_za: besides, gnu meant a lot to the open source movement [20:52] ok i'm off, nn all [21:00] Actually, Stallman rather you called it the Free Software Movement [21:00] He doesn't like the term "Open Source" [21:00] :P [21:01] Although that proves your point about fanatical === Trixar_za is now known as Trix[a]r_za [21:11] Maaz: tell kilos I'm sorry but between work, school and other events there's very little time left for online chatter in the next few weeks [21:11] inetpro: Righto, I'll tell Kilos on freenode === Trix[a]r_za is now known as Trixar_za === Trixar_za is now known as Trix[a]r_za
