=== ponbiki is now known as Guest90488 [01:59] Hi guys , i have an old laptop which has 600 mhz cpu and 512mb RAM i wanted to know if xubuntu Alternate will run smoothly on it? [02:01] depends on what you're doing with it, for basic stuff it should be fine, but things like flash really bog down a machine so that probably won't work so well [02:01] Alt I'd think would work, but I wouldn't expect the system to run smoothly. [02:01] it certainly won't be fast :) [02:01] will it be faster than XP sp3? [02:02] not familiar with windows, so I don't know [02:02] in the installation can i choose to make another drive on my PC ? [02:04] not sure what you mean, resize the other operating system you have installed? [02:32] anyone know how to make xubuntu boot on my system without having to boot with live usb? [02:43] anyone?? [03:21] Can i try xubuntu wihtout installing it? [03:21] on the boot [03:21] ? === David23400 is now known as David_awat === David_awat is now known as David_away === `mOOse` is now known as m00se [06:33] After upgrading from 11.10 to 12.04, something appears to have changed my PATH variable. http://pastebin.ca/2177247 What could it have been and how do I fix it, please? [06:35] What's your /etc/environment say? [06:35] (Use cat foe example) [06:43] gry: You could also make sure it's not messed up in ~/.bash_profile or set it there manually as per http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-desktop-74/cant-execute-commands-that-is-in-sbin-with-normal-user-762399/ ? [06:48] Sorry, I don't appear to have a ~/.bash_profile. I am using bash however. :-) [06:52] The /etc/environment file contains this: PATH="/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/games" [06:54] Try putting that in ~/.bash_profile (create), and relogin. (never had this issue myself though) [07:01] ~/bin shouldn't be left out which /etc/environment does [07:03] Yeah, I have that added in my .zshrc and .bashrc files. [07:16] Would we be able to find why it's missing? :-) [07:48] gry: Should be able to locate dpkg backups, and do a diff on them. [07:49] Might not be on the right track here, but sudo updatedb;locate dpkg-old [07:50] (And, I bet I'm wrong on that one, actually...) [07:53] Unit193: Hmm, it appears the /usr/local/* entries disappeared from the $PATH. I could just try readding them manually, is your 12.04 $PATH like what I pasted from /etc/environment? [10:11] Hi! [11:14] Hi, does Linux have an %appdata% folder like Windows does and how can I access it? [11:16] in linux systems there are hidden folders .appname or .config/appname [11:17] press ctrl H to see them in default file manager [11:23] Sysi: I've found a .config folder but can't find the folder I need. [11:24] Sysi: I've found it in a separate folder, thanks for your help. [17:14] hi, I have a small issue explained here http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1695502 [17:14] anyone have anything similar? firefox 14 on xubuntu 12.04 [17:21] sorry never happend to me [17:21] imo its a addon problem [17:21] try to disable one by one [17:23] think it's compiz, because it disappear when I focus to another program then back. === slow-motion_ is now known as slow-motion [19:41] it's Inception, if it just disappears and you don't know how you got there (like half way through a dream) [19:42] aquix: what's compiz doing on your xubuntu anyway?..:) === blankdisk is now known as blankdisk|away === slow-motion_ is now known as slow-motion [20:02] Iv setup dual monitors with ubuntustudio but they both show the same thing. How can i make proper dual monitors (2 different screens) [20:03] devtekalpha: how did you setup them? [20:10] v1adimir I know compiz is heavy on the system, but I'm addicted to their scale feature. if I could get that in xfce, compiz would be gone [20:11] I set them up with arandr [20:12] I have them both in the mobo's gpu sockets.... When i put them in the nvidia pci card and used nvidia x server. The apply button was always grayed out [20:13] Id like to have one monitor in the mobo and the secondary in the nvidia pci card [20:13] I chose ubuntu session instead of xfce session if that makes a difference [20:14] Is there a good guide of how to manually edit files for setting up dual monitors accross mobo and pci graphics sockets? [20:17] devtekalpha: sounds like 2 issues, nvidia-(x)config will work - unless you're not using the default drivers (I think I can remember that being the case, just switch to them, instead of using the x swat ppa) [20:17] compiz aint that heavy really. it's a lot faster than xfce own compositing (for me) and has those cool plugins to make gestures of. not using it in my current setup but I like it still. [20:18] devtekalpha: and as far as using the die graphics, it needs to be enabled at boot - right? (which isn't the case by default) [20:19] You mean the bios? I have uefi bios.. Couldnt see anything about multiple monitors there [20:20] Ill try configuring drivers too thanks === `mOOse` is now known as m00se [20:51] devtekalpha: not the bios, something with the kernel [20:51] default install only loads the card if it's plugged in (I forget where to look / what it is) [20:51] sry :s [20:56] Ok looks like i have a bit of research to do. Thanks for the pointers ill look these things up [20:57] cool, hope it helps [20:57] (i'd look it up, but the system is crawling atm - installing visual studio and a bunch of other stuff active) [22:20] hi [22:20] anyone knows how to remap keyboard to use one button to increase or decrease volume? [22:21] one button to both decrease and increase at the same time? [22:21] of course not [22:22] then I don't understand the question [22:22] thath would be too much [22:22] one for increase and another for decrease [22:22] :) [22:22] you could make them run amixer with the right parameters [22:23] there was a command to add a shortcut but i dont remember it [22:23] since i am beginner with linux and i had too reinstall it [22:23] xubuntu794: you can add it in keyboard settings [22:23] ...yes with amixer...but i dont know the line [22:24] amixer set Master 1- [22:24] and [22:24] amixer set Master 1+ [22:25] I usually use 5%+/- [22:26] tune to taste [22:26] ....that was the one i was looking for [22:26] thanks a lot!!!
