k_szeIs there any Internet Gateway Device client/browser for Xubuntu? e.g. for Mac OS X, there is an application called "Port Map" (http://www.codingmonkeys.de/portmap/), Windows also has a built-in utility to map ports by UPnP on capable routers.02:00
k_sze(and I would prefer a GUI application, if possible)02:01

xubuntu277Hi all. Some help needed with touchpad frozen on a HP DM1-4136SF. anybody aware of such an issue ?12:02
TheSheep"frozen"?12:16
TheSheepdoes that mean it used to work but stopped?12:17
xubuntu277yes. mouse and keyboard ok then randomly (of course) no way to have any key working nor the cursor moving. Something my external USB mouse works, sometimes not. no dmesg or syslog info ...12:20
TheSheepxubuntu277: what makes you think the touchpad is the problem?12:24
xubuntu343any chance to intall alternate xubunto on a pentium 3 laptop wich 128mb?12:27
xubuntu277@TheSheep: Well, I'm trying to know why it freezes :) It's a dual boot netbook running Win7 without no touchpad/keyb problem. It only happens with xubuntu.12:29
TheSheepxubuntu277: you need more ram12:29
xubuntu343to be more precise, its a pentium III with 746 MHz and 256 MB of RAM..will chorme12:29
xubuntu343..will chrome or mozilla work?..its for my mother12:29
xubuntu343:)12:29
TheSheepxubuntu277: 256MB may be enough, but it will be slow12:30
TheSheepxubuntu277: especially web browsers use a lot of ram12:30
xubuntu343i know and she is a youtube.com junky12:30
xubuntu343:)12:30
TheSheepyou will need to try, no promises12:31
mips1911xubuntu343, chrome or firefox wont work. I tried them on a lubuntu setup with P4 celeron 128MB ram. It will load and then the page file will start going mad and the machine essentially locks up. Try and upgrade the ram to 512MB-1GB12:33
mips1911xubuntu343, you can forget about youtube as well, flash will kill it.12:34
astraljavaI hear there's an HTML5 version for the bleeding edge testers.12:35

xubuntu343ok, thanks for your help!12:43

Robertc1985anyone can help me set up grub to load my windows 7?15:29
xubuntu225парам пам пам16:34
shpngldhello and good afternoon, I have a BIG problem afetr installing newer drivers fr nvidia mx420 under xubunti 11.04 I cant start my GUI!16:36
shpngldthe only thing I  see after restarting the pc is black background with white XUBUBTU16:36
shpngldI dont know what to do please help!16:36
shpngldI cant start even a terminal window16:36
holsteinshpngld: i would probably remove them, and try a differnt driver.. might also want to consider looking to see if there is a custom xorg.conf in place, and editing it, or making a new one16:36
shpngldi cant open a terminal16:37
holsteinshpngld: you can get to tty likely by using control+alt+F216:37
shpngldnothing happens16:37
shpngldon ctrl alt del it responds but not on anythin else16:38
shpngldplease help16:38
holsteinshpngld: then, you might want to try going in from a live CD, and seeing what, if any, xorg.conf is in place... i sometimes use a live CD like puppy or knoppix, and grab the xorg.conf and put it in place, and specify a driver... vesa driver should boot16:38
shpngldok now I have to try to find a cd16:38
holsteinshpngld: you should be able to use whatever CD you loaded the os with16:39
holsteinshpngld: you can also try the recover kernel image16:39
holsteinshpngld: whtn booting, right after anything from the bios, hit shift... you should see the kernel image you are using, and the recovery image... from there, you can try some options for recovery16:39
shpngldI have xubuntu 10.0416:42
shpngldwhat are the steps I have to follow16:42
shpngldholstein Thyanks for everything!16:42
holsteinshpngld: i would boot the machine... right after the bios, hit shift.. you should see a list of kernel images16:42
shpngldfoud 11.0416:42
holsteinthe 2nd one should be recovery16:42
holsteini would try that first... then, go in with a live cd.. then try a custome xorg.conf.. then consider just upgrading to 12.0416:43
shpngldit just started the cd with options to try or install16:45
holsteinshpngld: it? the live CD?16:45
shpngldyes16:45
holsteinshpngld: you enter the recover kernel from your installation... you boot the install.. the normal install, no live cd... hit shift, and choose the recovery image16:46
shpngldI cant get in any terminal from the hdd install16:47
shpngldctr=alt= anything dont work16:47
shpngldonly for restart16:47
shpngldit just stays a black screeen w/ xubuntu title16:48
shpngldthats all from my orig install16:48
shpngldthere is no GRUB menu or anythun16:48
shpngldcan i remove the new drivers I installed through live cd16:49
shpngldOk it seems like today i will be on WinXP....tomorrow I will buy a new CD and burn a Linux distrib just o repair the Video driver problem16:52
shpngldholstein: Can i have a link to download a xubuntu distrib that will do the wor?16:52
shpngldk*16:52
holsteinshpngld: when booting, you ned to hit shift to see the grub list16:54
holsteinneed*16:54
holsteinshpngld: *any* live CD will "do the work"16:54
holsteintheres not a live CD that will just magically make your machine boot, as the hardware is specific to your case16:55
holsteincreating that disc, though possible, would only benifit you in this one case, so its not going to exist16:55
shpngldholstein: nothing really happende16:58
shpngldblinkin underscore in left upper corner and nothing16:59
shpngldblack screen16:59
shpngldIm waitin and still nothin16:59
holsteinshpngld: you should see a grub list16:59
holsteinthere will be no waiting.. start tapping shift, right when the machine comes back on... from a powered down state16:59
shpngldit said grub loadin17:00
shpngldnow black screen with white xubuntu title17:01
holsteinshpngld: thats after the kernel17:01
holsteinshpngld: before that you should see a list, if you choose nothing, it will boot the first thing17:02
shpngldOK17:02
holsteinyou want to tap shift.. then navigate to "recovery" with the down arrow17:02
shpngldthere is a list17:02
shpngldwow17:02
shpngldUbuntu with linux 2 6 30 1517:02
holsteinshpngld: the 2nd one should be recovery.. i literally just poke around in there each time and try things til it works17:03
shpngldsame w/ recovrey mode17:03
holsteinshpngld: there is a "restore graphics" as far as i remember17:03
shpngldso i choose recovrey?17:03
holsteinshpngld: yes, there will be recovery options under the recovery mode, the 2nd one in the list17:03
shpngldtryin17:03
shpngldLoadin *&&&&@ generic17:04
shpngldinitial ramdisk17:04
shpngldtherre sppeared a list17:04
shpngldrepair brk pakages, Run in failsafe graphic mode,  reboot filesys check, update grub drop to rootshell prompt w\ netw drop to shell17:05
shpngldFailsafe Graphic mode?17:06
holsteinshpngld: well, youy are having a graphics issue, correct? so that would be a good first try17:06
holsteinrootshell promt will be handy too if you want to apt-get remove the driver you installed17:06
shpngldnow I have to reconfigure graphics?17:06
holsteinshpngld: you dont have to do anything... you can try to repair your system if you want17:07
shpngldthats the idea17:07
holsteinshpngld: you should be able to get to the GUI and remove the driver17:07
shpngldI just want to remove the new and leave the old exp graphic drv17:07
holsteinshpngld: sounds like a good place to start...17:08
shpngldIm startin the session in low graphics so i can get to the menu (additional drivers)17:09
shpngldwell in aditional drivers there is only one driver listed and it is NVIDIA Accelarated graphics driver (version current)17:10
shpngldthe experimental one (which was workin OK) is not here17:10
holsteinshpngld: i would remove all proprietary drivers, and get my system booting, if it were me17:11
holsteinOR, i would just backup my files, and take this time to upgrade to 12.0417:11
shpngldNo prop drivers ate used on this system17:12
shpngldit says17:12
shpngldMY pc is pretty old17:12
shpngldthats why i avoid upg do newer vers17:12
shpngldthats the only reason17:13
holsteinshpngld: they wont be "used" now... you are in safe gaphics mode... i would look in the package manager, or try the wiki pages for how to purge whatever driver you installed17:13
holsteinshpngld: you can always try the 12.04 version live and see how it works with your hardware... sometimes, its better to upgrade, and sometimes not, but 10.04 is approaching EOL regardless17:14
shpngld11.04 is mine17:14
shpngld10.04 was on the cd17:14
shpngldok so from synaptic package manager I have to find the last driver i installed right?17:15
holsteinso, you just have a few more months then17:15
holsteinshpngld: you dont have to do anything... i would use the package manager of my choice to remove the driver that is causing the system not to boot17:16
shpngldI will try now17:16
shpngldgood thing is everything is workin for now17:17
shpngldI thought that the newer drv will work better than the experimental one17:17
shpngldit is from june last year for nvidia mx 420 (imagine how old hardware it isw)17:17
holsteinwell, if it aint broke... or, assume nothing, which ever helpful tip you can learn from this event17:18
xubuntu716hey17:18
xubuntu716can some1 plz exlain how to know if i shod get 32bit or 64bit17:19
holsteinxubuntu716: i would say, if you dont already know, just get 3217:19
xubuntu716ok thx17:20
holsteinwhen you neeed 64, you'll know.. though, if the hardware supports 64, theres not really any "deal breakers" anymore17:20
shpngldholstein: I dont know how is the best way to say THANK You for your support and help, but i really mean it. I ll do some stuff around the house and then will try to fix the problem17:24
shpngldhopefully everything should be ok and there will be no need to come here again for help...soon17:24
holsteinshpngld: sure... anytime! let us know if you need anything more :)17:24
shpngldthank you! thanks alot XUBUNTU IRC crew17:25
