[03:06] linus_, can i pm? [03:07] i dont know hot to pm on irc but if you want to go ahead [03:07] Any have any idea on my boot problem. It won't run after the initial first startup and install. Now goes to panic mode and says its the kernal problem. [03:08] JonLimitless, wut? [03:08] usually a kernel panic is caused by the kernel not finding files it is looking for [03:08] I installed ubuntu through the windows installer. After the install process finished and rebooted, it no longer booting. [03:09] did you install it as dualboot? [03:09] yes. [03:09] JonLimitless, did you install the right processor architecture? [03:09] also a good question\ [03:09] Yes the 64bit version tf2ftw [03:10] you have 64 capabilities? [03:10] JonLimitless, windows install is not a dual boot it is a file in windows. [03:10] linus_, it sounds like JonLimitless installed wubi [03:10] Yes I run windows 7 ultimated on a 64bit quad intel core alienware laptop. [03:10] sorry my bad [03:11] JonLimitless, are you "just trying" linux or do you need dual boot? [03:11] Yes I downloaded wubi and went through the install process on the first-time boot of ubuntu, but no longer boots again [03:11] I need a dual boot. [03:11] I would install virtualbox and run a VM if you just want to play [03:11] id get a cd or usb copy of the ububtu install and start there [03:11] wubi is a virtual box right? [03:11] packages/programs seem to install to a default place in my system. im wondering what the best way to go about backing my programs and/or their configurations is on linux..... on windows i would just have a folder c:/myprogs and back that whole folder up and copy it to a new system.... but on linux the programs seem to be mostly in /usr/lib or something and other places mixed with other files... so should i just backup the [03:11] configuration files and then write a script to load the config files on a new computer after the programs are installed... or shall i try and install all my programs into a new folder in my home folder and backup the whole programs again -but is probably just more trouble because of how the programs get integrated when installed in their default location? [03:12] if you need dual boot then definitely skip wubi [03:12] I do have one, i have a 32gb hi version of ubuntu also and its no longer loading after the first boot [03:12] JonLimitless, Have you ever dual booted? Are you aware of the limitations of primamry partitions on a HD? [03:12] primary* [03:12] you most likely have a boot loader issue [03:13] Yes. I had a dual boot before with ubuntu 10 bout 1 year along on the same laptop [03:13] JonLimitless, uninstall wubi before everything is fubar [03:14] k done. How do you suggest me installing Ubuntu 12.04 and keeping it as a dual boot? [03:14] just install off disc [03:14] JonLimitless, Cool, then boot a cd, or usb drive and install, I assume you understand the limits of primaries on a single HD, resize the windows with its own partitioner if it is W7. [03:14] select "install along side windows" [03:15] if it is windows 7 he probably has empty paririons already [03:15] sorry meant partitions === agat is now known as Guest1228 [03:15] okay, crap i forget how to make a new partition... isn't that in the computer window [03:16] JonLimitless, run disk as live mode and run gparted to partition your HDD [03:16] gparted* [03:16] ? [03:16] ahh the program [03:16] or you can do it in windows but i then i woudl say you should go talk to #windows [03:17] JonLimitless, do you have the windows backed up? [03:17] Is #Windows a chat here? [03:17] TrollingForSoup, ##windows [03:17] TrollingForSoup, hahaha dunnpo [03:17] this is freenode, probably [03:17] id follow wilee advice, im my experience using gparted to resize windows 7 partitions can lead to data loss [03:17] Well, time to check that out [03:17] .Seems interesting. [04:56] there were 3 options [04:56] overwrite windows [04:57] installl with windows [04:57] and advaned [04:57] i hat install with [04:57] zack6849: I'm assuming you used the desktop disc. [04:57] hit 400gbfor eachpartition [04:57] KatsumeBlisk: Oh, no, it's more like Debian's than ArchLinux's. [04:57] an hit next [04:57] zack6849: Please don't flood; use http://paste.ubuntu.com to paste; don't use Enter as punctuation. [04:57] im fairly sure i did [04:57] zack6849: What did you choose? [04:57] namoamitabuddha: Ah.. That makes sense. I've used Debian's too. The alt disc must be really similar to Ubuntu Server then. [04:57] i used the install with windows option [04:57] it froze for ~20 mins [04:58] at which point i decided to reboot [04:58] It froze? Or began partitioning. [04:58] It takes time. [04:58] it said it b, but made no progressegan [04:58] It takes time. [04:58] so i hit the expand button so it would show progress [04:58] it wass throwing errors [04:58] But I don't think it would take twenty minutes. [04:58] and didnt move [04:58] zack6849: Just boot up from a live CD (doesn't necessarily have to be 12.04 for this step) and we'll go from there. [04:58] What kind of errors? [04:59] i dont recall [04:59] zack6849: Do you know how to partition by hand? [04:59] yes... KatsumeBlisk is correct [04:59] it was something about a widget [04:59] :/ [04:59] i had the error [04:59] but its been ~1hr [04:59] zack6849: Do you know how to partition by hand, not by the intallation step? [05:00] not within the installer [05:00] i can do anything at the moment [05:00] i need to check which cd is the livecd [05:00] an my laptops disk drive won open [05:00] -_- [05:00] you don't have a usb? [05:00] zack6849: Desktop CD is OK. [05:00] zack6849: Is this on your laptop? [05:00] no [05:00] my desktop [05:00] im on my laptop at the moment though [05:00] zack6849: The one named after "LiveCD" is not necessary. === milind is now known as abyss42 [05:01] the movie player doesn't show up in alt+Tab [05:01] i bured about 4 diff cds [05:01] zack6849: If your desktop can boot from USB, you could do that if you can't find the disc. [05:01] 3 were win repair disks [05:01] thats true [05:01] but t dl takes forever [05:01] what's going on here? [05:01] usb is way easier these days [05:01] *the [05:01] helping a dude with an install [05:01] dude/chick whatev [05:01] I assume dude [05:01] i dun brokded mah wandows :/ [05:02] yeah, im a guy [05:02] zack6849: Are you familiar with Linux commands? [05:02] not particularly [05:02] i knew sudo apt get [05:02] well there are no women on the internet [05:02] thats about it [05:02] ^ [05:02] those are the rules bub [05:02] no women [05:02] so you're trying to boot a live cd and get some files? [05:02] zack6849: Please don't flood; use http://paste.ubuntu.com to paste; don't use Enter as punctuation. [05:02] i need to get the livecd first [05:02] zack6849: Until we get you booted into a live cd... dont assume everything is squashed. [05:02] i burned it earlier [05:03] dound it [05:03] gonna go see if it boots [05:03] brb [05:03] zack6849: Have you any installation CD now? [05:03] namoamitabuddha: Based on his "brb", he left to find it. [05:03] !enter | zack6849 please stop hitting enter like it spits out money. There are 1500 people in here... if we all did that it would be unusable.: Please try to keep your questions/responses on one line. Don't use the "Enter" key as punctuation! [05:04] sorry [05:04] what if i were to say ev after telling my pc to boot from a live cd i still get the blinking cursor of doom? [05:04] zack6849: Did you try this or is this hypothetical? [05:05] i tried it [05:05] :( [05:05] KatsumeBlisk: Sorry, my English is bad. [05:05] !nomodeset | zack6849 [05:05] zack6849: A common kernel (boot)parameter is nomodeset, which is needed for some graphic cards that otherwise boot into a black screen or show corrupted splash screen. See http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1613132 on how to use this parameter [05:05] just wait [05:05] namoamitabuddha: No problem. I'm just informing you. :) I appreciate you helping him with me. [05:06] How old is this desktop? [05:06] well, where would i input said options [05:06] its pretty much brand new [05:06] zack6849, if you are getting the cd booted and from the try ubuntu gui you get a blinking cursor check out the bots link on nomodeset. [05:06] its been updated constantly [05:06] KatsumeBlisk: It seems that he persist on getting one called "LiveCD". [05:06] i did [05:06] how would i manage to change any of said settings if i cant even boot? [05:07] KatsumeBlisk: persist in* [05:07] i need a little help expanding the partition that ubuntu is on [05:07] zack6849, are you getting to the try ubuntu gui [05:07] ive got stupid gparted installed [05:07] yeah, these are all assuming that it actually booted in [05:07] so we're currently trying to save his files or fix his windows machine? [05:07] but when i try to resize the stupid partition gparted just explains implicitly that it is uselss [05:07] phonebook_: gparted is OK. [05:07] zack6849, you did not read the link it tells you what to do there. [05:07] wilee-nilee no i m not [05:08] what is better than okay? [05:08] after ooting i get nothing, just a blankscreen with a cursor [05:08] zack6849, Ah I see, then I don't kmow. [05:08] well thats dandy [05:08] zack6849: if you booted once, you can boot again. Your hard drive has nothing to do with live cd [05:08] zack6849: Boot what? CD? [05:08] yes [05:08] zack6849, have you checked the md5sum of the disc [05:08] im botting wwith a live cd [05:08] phonebook_: gparted is the best GUI partitioner, imo. Granted, I'm not picky in that department. What's the layout of your HDD? What are you shrinking to expand? [05:08] booting* [05:08] try a live usb if possible [05:08] guys - question - i have dual screen - but on the other screen my desktop area overflows physical size of the screen - how to cope with this? [05:08] or trying, it just shows a blank screen with a blinking prompt [05:09] the ubuntu partition is all the way to the right in the gparted diagram [05:09] stahl, can you link me to that? [05:09] zack6849: Try Ctrl+Alt+F1 [05:09] so while i have 500 unused gb [05:09] it wont let me add that spce [05:09] yeah one sec [05:09] due to the fact id rather not do something stupid this time [05:09] phonebook_: Is the 500GB before or after Ubuntu? [05:10] i have tried this and it does not help [05:10] sec.. [05:10] phonebook_: You may have to move it to the right (the problem is that it's not *adding* to Ubuntu right?) and then either try again or reboot and try it. [05:10] if anyone has some time, i'd appreciate some help with ubuntu 10.10 and F@H [05:10] !imagebin | phonebook_ [05:10] phonebook_: Screenshots can be made with the [PrtScr] button. [05:11] Dmanstasiu, sure it is end of life. ;) [05:11] KatsumeBlisk: I guess phonebook_ created too much primary partitions so that he cann't create one more. [05:11] I won't be able to see phonebook_'s screenshot. lol. I'm using CLI. [05:11] KatsumeBlisk: too many* [05:11] KatsumeBlisk: aha, you can. [05:11] namoamitabuddha: You should be able to have as much free space as you want though since it's not a partition, per se. [05:11] KatsumeBlisk: just wget it. [05:11] KatsumeBlisk: and use a tool, say fbv, to show. [05:11] haha oh man, dude I was trying to help left, well I'm off, cheers guys [05:12] namoamitabuddha: I don't have a GUI period. Are you saying there's a way to view images without one? [05:12] KatsumeBlisk: yes [05:12] KatsumeBlisk: fbv [05:12] namoamitabuddha: Oooh. I'll look into this. Thanks. [05:12] KatsumeBlisk: If you have framebuffer. [05:13] KatsumeBlisk: It's also okay to browse the Internet in virtual console, say tty1, but it seems ugly. [05:13] @wilee-nilee i'd just like some help if possible :P [05:13] FBV, eh? I'llhave to check it out. [05:13] grr [05:13] stupid laptop charger [05:13] sorry about that [05:13] http://i1120.photobucket.com/albums/l493/powerfulcrunch/Screenshotfrom2012-08-09011209.png [05:13] or fbi is also ok. [05:14] Dmanstasiu, I can appreciate that but end of life distros are not really supported, you might get help though. [05:14] it's really not a complicated thing [05:14] im new and just missing a dll [05:14] mscorlib.dll [05:14] the tiny pathetic partitions crammed up in the right is ubuntu [05:14] i'd guess it's something fairly common [05:14] phonebook_: Now there're four primary partitions. [05:14] phonebook_: Therefore you cannot create one more. [05:15] i dont even know why there are four [05:15] where did stahl go? D: [05:15] the two in the middle are both empty [05:15] phonebook_: It seems that sda1, sda2, sda3, sda5, sda6, sda7 are mounted. [05:15] but no matter what i do i cant get that space into the ubuntu partition [05:15] phonebook_: Try to resize sda4 [05:16] should i be concerned if the command top says i have a zombie process running? [05:16] Nah. [05:16] phonebook_: to fulfill the free space on the fourth row. [05:16] Just means a process didn't die when it should have. [05:16] I have a pc w/ no operating system. It just has the BIOS. How can I tell if it is 32 or 64 bit, so I know which Ubuntu iso to install? [05:16] it depends on your processor [05:16] What CPU does it have bitbarron [05:16] When you get to CMOS, tell me what CPU you have. [05:16] bitbarron: How much RAM too? [05:16] % [05:16] ^ * [05:16] bitbarron: It depends on your architecture. [05:16] thanks TrollingForSoup [05:17] TrollingForSoup, It has an AMD dual core [05:17] phonebook_, so you are trying to add partition space to the ubuntu install right? [05:17] What dual-core, though? [05:17] instead of offering me the option to resize it just came up with a menu that had nothing to do with anything [05:17] bitbarron: How much RAM do you have? [05:17] right [05:17] a couple hundred gb would be nice [05:17] phonebook_: Are you using a CD? [05:17] TrollingForSoup, let me go look. Be right back. [05:17] Alright. [05:17] ubuntu is already installed [05:17] im on ubuntu now [05:17] !tab | phonebook_ please use nicks so we know who you are talking to. [05:17] phonebook_: Oh, you cannot resize it immediately [05:17] phonebook_ please use nicks so we know who you are talking to.: You can use your key for autocompletion of nicknames in IRC, as well as for completion of filenames and programs on the command line. [05:18] TrollingForSoup, It is an AMD Athlon [05:18] x64 or x86? [05:18] phonebook_: Too many partitions are mounted, therefore they are locked. [05:18] phonebook_: You cannot operate on them. [05:18] TrollingForSoup, Well, it use to have Win XP, so I assume x86 [05:18] bitbarron: How much RAM? If it's less than 4GB, then you might as well use 32bit instead of guessing that it's 64bit. [05:19] Well, if it came with XP, then yeah. [05:19] I installed Ubuntu using Wubi. If I want a dual-boot, I have no choice but to re-install Ubuntu right? [05:19] XP had an x64, but it was unstable. [05:19] phonebook_: In order to enlarge sda4, the logical partitions, say sda5, sda6, sda7, should be unmounted. [05:19] icequeen, you can transfer that wubi to a partition hold on. [05:19] namoamitabuddha it doesnt give me the option [05:19] KatsumeBlisk, It has 2 GB Ram, so I guess 32 is going to be the way I will go [05:20] Yes. [05:20] phonebook_: They are locked, therefore the options are GREY. [05:20] Is this your first Linux install, bit? [05:20] namoamitabuddha wait yes it does, hold on.. [05:20] phonebook_: You cannot do that in gparted unless you're a geek. [05:20] TrollingForSoup, Thanks. I think between you and KatsumeBlisk it sounds like 32 is the way to go. Thanks to both. Cheers! [05:20] icequeen, https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MigrateWubi Make sure you are aware of the amount of partitions on a single hard drive and what type. [05:20] bitbarron: The main benefit of 64bit is allowing you to use more than 4GB of RAM. If you don't have that, I can't think of a reason to go 64bit over 32bit. :) [05:20] phonebook_: Use the low-level tool such as fdisk. IT'S VERY DANGEROUS. [05:20] KatsumeBlisk, Thanks. 32 it is. [05:20] is bitbarron installing windows or a linux dist ? [05:20] bitbarron, If this is your first time using Linux, I can walk you through your first configuration. [05:21] wilee-nilee, do you have a clue as to why it wont boot at all? im doing as multiple people suggested and am setting up a usb boot but o you have any ideas as to why this would have happened in the fitst place? [05:21] icequeen, amount of partitions meaning the limitations [05:21] namoamitabuddha sighhhhhh [05:21] zack68491: Do you at least see BIOS when booting? [05:21] TrollingForSoup, Thanks for the offer. I have installed Ubuntu several times no, so I think I am good. [05:21] zack68491, have you checked the md5sum of the disc? [05:21] Alright. [05:21] Just making sure. [05:21] not KatsumeBlisk [05:21] namoamitabuddha extremely dissapointing considering it will be easy to switch over to windows and find a tool for this [05:21] I do so love first installs. [05:21] i see nothing [05:21] wilee-nilee I have 2 hard drives on my computer, so my (perhaps naive) assumption is that makes it simpler to have 2 operating systems [05:21] phonebook_: (DANGEROUS) delete sda4, re-create sda4, allocate sda5,sda6,sda7 in the same offset. [05:21] my motherboard has UEFI if tteans anything [05:21] phonebook_: No. [05:21] namoamitabuddha screw it, im not wasting more time on this tonight.... thank you for your help though. i appreciate it [05:21] Never tried multidrive dualboot... [05:22] phonebook_: Windows is awful. [05:22] icequeen, I would agree that a actual dual boot os beter then a wubi install. [05:22] zack68491: That means a lot. Does anything show up before it tries to boot the live cd/usb? [05:22] phonebook_: I tried to that and finally, windows broke my MBA. [05:22] namoamitabuddha im done with it for tonight.... this is stupidly hard when it should be stupidly easy [05:22] phonebook_: the partition information all lost. [05:22] thanks, im out [05:22] Well, I wouldn't call Windows awful. [05:22] no KatsumeBlisk it just shows a blinking cursor [05:22] wilee-nilee I would not have used wubi if I had known it was any different from partitioning things out normally. [05:22] i suppose i should have mentioned uefi earluer :/ [05:23] Wubi is annoying... [05:23] It's never worked properly for me. [05:23] I LIKE manually partitioning, dammit. [05:23] zack68491: I'm not familiar with UEFI, so I'm probably not much help. If it's similar to BIOS in having a key to press to get to the settings, it should show it when booting. [05:23] what problems have you said TFS? [05:23] hello? [05:23] I'm not using Wubi right now. [05:23] zack68491: So when you boot your computer, all you get is the cursor? NOTHING else shows? [05:23] icequeen, no biggie it can be migrated to a partition with just running code, I would back up any thing important there first though. [05:23] I've just had bad experiences in thr past. [05:23] KatsumeBlisk it has the press the key to change boot settings and whatnot, yes [05:23] wilee-nilee nothing important :) [05:24] uefi is essentially the fios settings, but grapphically enhanced [05:24] and with a mouse ^_^ [05:24] *bios..... [05:24] zack68491: K. I'm assuming you chose USB or w/e your Ubuntu media is as the first option? [05:24] yes [05:24] zack68491: Just trying to figure out how far you can get. :) [05:24] lotuspsychje, well the build has start again [05:24] im gonna try a usb disk just so i always know exactly where my cd is >_> [05:25] KatsumeBlisk: zack68491 said that the cursor occurred. [05:25] not a mouse cursor, but like a typing prompt [05:25] zack68491: Were you using a CD or USB? [05:25] Ah, I see. [05:25] i waas using a cd [05:25] icequeen, cool then follow the wiki, put it on the second HD if you like, just be aware of the limit to the amount of primary partitions, ubuntu can be in a extened as a logical partition so that you have a swap a s well if you have 3 primaries on a single disc already. [05:25] about to usb it [05:25] zack68491: Make a USB, then we'll go from there. [05:25] zack68491: Is there anything in promt? [05:26] zack68491: prompt* [05:26] not that i can see [05:26] i cant enter anyhting there either [05:26] zack68491: Try to press Esc [05:26] namoamitabuddha: From what I can tell, the computer doesn't know what to boot. [05:26] namoamitabuddha: That's just my guess though. [05:26] *extended [05:26] lemme go hit it and see [05:26] :P [05:26] hopefully laptop wont die [05:26] KatsumeBlisk: Oh, I know nothing about UEFI. [05:27] if it does expect me to be back shortly [05:27] zack68491: It won't die. [05:27] namoamitabuddha: Neither do I. I've only used BIOS. :P [05:27] it will [05:27] zack68491: You should plug it in. :) [05:27] if the cord comes out [05:27] it dies [05:27] zack68491: Ahh. [05:27] zack68491: never mind [05:27] greatt [05:27] i tried to create a boot drive [05:27] didnt work [05:28] wilee-nilee sorry, I don't think I understand. why do I need to watch the limit of the number of partitions? [05:28] zack68491: What OS and application did you try to make the USB with? [05:28] (thanks for your help by the way) [05:28] windows 7 [05:28] thpendrive linux creator app listed on the wiki [05:28] KatsumeBlisk: I recommend using Universal USB Installer. Google it. [05:28] oops [05:28] zack68491: See my above comment. XD [05:28] i am [05:28] :P [05:29] thats what im using [05:29] icequeen, there is a rule that if you have more then 4 primary partitions in hd that is a standard msdos setup it will make the disc go dynamic, you don't want that. [05:29] zack68491: What's the problem with the USB? Does it have an error when making it or does it not boot, etc? [05:29] it says [05:29] 1 error occurend [05:29] usb will not boot [05:29] icequeen, I have to assume you have a msdos regular common setup when I warn you of this. [05:29] or something along those lines [05:30] zack68491: Win7 says this or is this shown when you try to boot off of it? [05:30] the program itself says so [05:31] zack68491: Have you tried again? Make sure there's nothing important on it, and reformat it with the program, if you haven't already. Try making it again. [05:31] im trying :P [05:31] zack68491: Unless it disappears on its own, don't close errors until you tell us exactly what it says. :) [05:32] wilee-nilee the D drive does not have any operating system installed on it, the windows OS is on C drive. would msdos still be installed on the second disc? [05:32] just to ensure im not being retarted [05:32] this is the proper one correct? [05:32] ubuntu-12.04-desktop-amd64 [05:32] zack68491: Yes. [05:32] im using amd 64 bit cpu [05:32] okay [05:32] zack68491: It doesn't have to be AMD, but if your desktop has UEFI, it definitely works with 64bit. [05:33] icequeen, probably, you could boot a live ubuntu cd and look at it with gparted or use the windows partitioner to identify it. [05:33] well this could be problematic [05:33] icequeen: I recommend using an Ubuntu CD since the Windows partitioner is pretty bad. [05:33] when i select my flashdrives letter [05:33] it freezes [05:33] icequeen, are you sure that D is a second HD, not just a partition? [05:34] KatsumeBlisk, look at the channel this is just to identify a partitioning type [05:34] zack68491: Not sure what to tell you. At this point, I'd try a reboot and/or redownloading the tool. [05:35] wilee-nilee: Sorry. I've been focusing on one person. I'll stay out of your way. [05:35] wilee-nilee - well the D drive's name is DATAPART1. However, the C drive recently failed and was physically removed and replaced with a new drive (all the files were destryoed). but the D drive's files were intact. So I take that as a pretty good indication they are physically separate disks [05:35] i think i broke my flashdrive...... [05:36] murphys law seems to apply to my life [05:36] wilee-nilee yes, Dell's product description of my laptop (Studio 17) say "dual hard drives" [05:36] icequeen, I don't like to guess, so I would be comfortable if we were able to confirm the D drive with gparted from a live ubuntu cd. [05:37] wilee-nilee - i'm using ubuntu right now [05:37] icequeen: sudo fdisk -l [05:37] icequeen: in a pastebin please [05:37] L3top, will that work from a wubi? [05:37] wilee-nilee - installing GParted now.... [05:38] how do i get more hard drives? [05:38] icequeen, L3top may be correct, not sure how gparted works from a wubi to be honest. [05:39] probably works, never tried it. icequeen [05:40] GParted (just installed) says there's a /dev/sda and a /dev/sdb. Two HDs, right? [05:40] Hi guys. I'm changing to change the name of a Unbuntu 10.04 machine here. I've changed /etc/hostname and /etc/hosts and rebooted, and while pinging the new name works fine, pinging the old name still gets this same machine as well. :-( Since I want to re-use the old name on another PC, is there anything else I need to change/clear? [05:41] icequeen, yeah take a screen shot of both and put them in a imagebin [05:41] changing to change->trying to change [05:41] !imagebin | icequeen [05:41] icequeen: Screenshots can be made with the [PrtScr] button. I can't seem to find away to delete them... here's a screenshot: http://i.imgur.com/CaRDp.jpg [05:43] jkoltner : restart nscd service to clear DNS cache [05:43] Diazo, did you try running the printer app to see if ubuntu has that in the repo's [05:43] yeah, i even broke my flash drive [05:43] wilee-nilee http://imagebin.org/223866 + http://imagebin.org/223867 [05:43] this is fantastic [05:43] -_- [05:43] zack6849: How'd you break it? [05:44] not sure [05:44] wont read oxon any pc or x [05:44] wilee-nilee, I haven't tried that but I can't seem to find my printer cable to connect the printer cable to my laptop to find the driver. [05:44] i t usually has a dara used bar [05:44] DarkStar: This is Ubuntu 10.04, which doesn't have nscd installed even? [05:44] Seeing as the printer is a wireless printer. [05:44] now it is just striped [05:44] And apparently doesn't cache DNS entries? (Or isn't suppose to...) [05:44] zack6849: Well, do you have another USB or a way to burn another disc? [05:45] zack6849: Not sure if UEFI, but in BIOS, you can manually select what to boot from separately from the boot order. Have you tried this? [05:46] icequeen, you have standard msdos setup the sdb drive has data on it is that a recovery for windows? [05:46] yes [05:46] zack6849: And you still got the blinking cursor without any other message right? [05:46] yea [05:47] zack6849: How long have you let that cursor sit? [05:47] Diazo, I have no idea on how to fix the problem you're in, so I wondered if you tried the repos is all. [05:47] the whole time [05:47] zack6849: It's been there this entire time, eh? Hmm. [05:48] wilee-nilee sdb has Ubuntu 12.04 on it [05:48] wilee-nilee, How would I go about checking the repository? [05:48] (installed with wubi onto the D drive) wilee-nilee [05:48] (D drive = sdb) [05:48] flash video on firefox keeps stuttering about 2 or 3 times a second, the only way i can fix it is to restart the darned computer. nothing else (logging out and in again, suspending) works. why is this happening? [05:49] zack6849: I'm not sure what to do now. I've told you everything I'd do. [05:49] this blows [05:49] thats an expensive pc too [05:50] use it to clean up your leafs then zack6849 [05:50] leaves [05:50] ? [05:50] leafs [05:50] lol [05:50] zack6849: I'm sure it's just the hard drive and not the whole PC. [05:50] thats still aa 1TB HDD! [05:50] zack6849: Or mobo since UEFI could be the problem. [05:50] wilee-nilee sdb a.k.a. D drive i usually just use for normal file storage. movies, music, etc. that's what it's for, just regular storage. I decided to re-purpose it for Ubuntu since 500GB storage is more than enough (even though my sda a.k.a. C drive looks full that's just temporary) [05:50] ............. [05:51] zack6849: I'm just saying that I'm sure there's a fix. I jsut can't do anything from here, you know? [05:51] icequeen, Ah okay I assume it is safe to shrink the sdb1 partition with the windows installer and have ubuntu still boot as the wubi, leaving space for the migration, the boot the ubuntu to make sure it is good then migrate it. I have never done a migration so you will have to follow the wiki. Or you could just wipe the sdb and do a install from a live ubuntu cd to the sdb and let it run the install to the free space. [05:51] KatsumeBlisk, if you've exhausted the options with zack, could you help me when you get a chance? [05:51] newbchessplayer: What's your problem? There's a chance I can't help, depending on what it is? [05:51] icequeen, so the sdb is not the ubuntu wubi? [05:51] zack6849: Do you have any other USB drives to try? [05:52] flash video on firefox keeps stuttering about 2 or 3 times a second, the only way i can fix it is to restart the darned computer. nothing else (logging out and in again, suspending) works. why is this happening? [05:52] KatsumeBlisk im trying a different one now [05:52] wassup ? [05:52] newbchessplayer: I assume it's because Flash (on Linux especially) sucks. [05:52] it seems to be working, im currently installinng the usb boot thin gonto it [05:52] i don't see the bluetooth device in my kde [05:52] zack6849: Let me know if it's successful. [05:52] thanks that fixed it right up, KatsumeBlisk [05:53] 7zip is exxtrating what i assume s the iso [05:53] *is [05:53] newbchessplayer: I've never had a lot of luck with Flash. I avoid it on Linux [05:53] zack6849: Yeah. [05:53] wilee-nilee well it's confusing. wubi is supposed to be a program in windows, but windows is on sda and ubuntu is on sdb. I guess it's just a windows program installed on sdb [05:53] KatsumeBlisk you don't watch youtube? [05:53] icequeen: Not really. [05:53] icequeen, what do you see if you open it? [05:53] i know right [05:54] And that's the last I'm talking about my habits with flash. Not really on topic. ;) [05:54] k [05:55] it didnt throw an error [05:55] just go boot off of it and see what happens? [05:55] zack6849: Basically. [05:55] so has anyone else had experience with this hiccuping flash video? [05:55] wilee-nilee I can't open it right now for some reason, but I've opened it on windows and it just had a folder called 'ubuntu' with files and subfolders [05:55] lets hope nothing bursts into flames [05:55] ill br [05:55] *brb [05:56] wilee-nilee the whole reason I used wubi in the first place is because I found the LiveCD installation scary. dead simple if I want to simply split my sda in half, but more complicated to accord one hard drive per OS [05:56] icequeen, my only concern with the sdb1 partition was if it is the ubuntu would it be affected by a resize of that partition, if that is what it is just resize it and check that it works before migrating it. If you have nothing to save there then a regular cd install to a free space there is fine if you just delete the sdb1. [05:57] how can i see bluetooth devices ? [05:58] wilee-nilee, so I'll shrink the sdb1 partition to like 31 GB, since wubi only uses 30 GB anyway. then I'll migrate it, and delete the wubi partition afterwards? [05:58] the bluetooth symbol on the top panal ? [05:59] odd [05:59] i used the uusb [05:59] and in my boot screen it shows up twice [05:59] icequeen, I don't think the windows partitioner will allow you to make that small, I suspect a shrink of that size might make the wubi bricked, but I don't know I never really used wubi. [05:59] flash video on firefox keeps stuttering about 2 or 3 times a second, the only way i can fix it is to restart the darned computer. nothing else (logging out and in again, suspending) works. why is this happening? [05:59] zack6849: Try one, if it doesn't work, try the other. [05:59] i tried both devices, after trying them both i noticed that it actually goes down a few lines then freezes again [05:59] ie [05:59] at start its here [06:00] | [06:00] then it goes down a few lines [06:00] | [06:00] zack6849: Please don't flood; use http://paste.ubuntu.com to paste; don't use Enter as punctuation. [06:00] wilee-nilee wubi is capped at 30 GB. so, I could not install 40 GB worth of software. at least that's my understanding from what I've read [06:01] any ideas KatsumeBlisk? [06:01] zack6849: So it boots from the USB and freezes? [06:01] wilee-nilee anyway to be safe I could just shrink to 80 GB or something. as long as I can delete it after it doesn't matter. and if I brick the wubi, it wouldn't devastate me I'd just rather try to migrate than start from scratch [06:01] it boots [06:01] and it even goes down a few lines with the prompt thing [06:02] no uubunto screen though [06:02] '*ubuntu [06:02] >_> [06:02] would screenshots help any? [06:02] zack6849: I'm not sure what to tell you. That's really weird, and I've never seen that before. Especially since it booted before this whole snafu. [06:02] zack6849: Not really. I don't have a GUI and haven't setup a way to view images in CLI. [06:03] zack6849: It might help someone else help you though. [06:03] icequeen, I think that is the limit 30 gigs. If it was me I would shrink the sdb1 with the windows partitioner to have a bigger then 30 gig partition for the migration, then check the ubuntu still boots. I would migrate it then, and then you can exspnad the ubuntu partition from either end to make it the size you want, this would be done from a live gparted or ubuntu cd I rfecommend having a live ubuntu cd anyway. [06:03] well did you hear my whole story earlier? [06:03] zack6849: Yes. You rebooted when the partitioning froze. [06:03] zack6849: snapshot? [06:03] yeah [06:03] snapshot? [06:03] what [06:03] zack6849: may help. [06:03] zack6849: screenshot [06:04] i doubt itll help but okay [06:04] gimme a sec [06:04] zack6849: I'm sorry I'm not much of help. I wish I could fix it. :( [06:04] zack6849: Your spelling seems strange. [06:04] namoamitabuddha: It's slang sort of. [06:05] icequeen, to be honest that will take some time if you include the expansion of the migration, a ubuntu install from a cd is about 20 min [06:05] namoamitabuddha: It's not officially correct, but it's correct to our eyes. If that made sense. [06:05] wilee-nilee how much time? [06:05] KatsumeBlisk: But it's really hard to non-native speakers. [06:06] namoamitabuddha: Yeah I know. Nothing I can do about it though. I don't use it. I'm weird and like being grammatically correct. [06:06] icequeen, hard to say the resizing of the migration to the size you want is the longest, I would estimate all together if you went step by step knowing what you are doing about 2 hours. [06:06] KatsumeBlisk: You are not weird. [06:07] uploaafing pics now [06:07] nobody uses csh or tcsh on ubuntu? [06:07] gd, i apologize for all of my typos, i despise this laptop [06:07] zack6849: No worries. :) [06:07] icequeen, I think it will take a bit longer times are not really estimable in this scenario, all I can say is a fresh install will be the fastest [06:08] wilee-nilee that's fine, I would save hours and hours of time doing the migration rather than a fresh install. a fresh install would be depressing. i've already spent days tweaking my ubuntu [06:08] Hi all , may I know what is the command to tar and copy a directory including subdirectory and files ? Actually my ubuntu became corrupt while upgrading , so I want to get a backup data using live dvd of ubuntu. how to do if any one suggest plz [06:09] while copying it shows permission denied [06:09] disk select screen :https://dl.dropbox.com/u/49928817/troubleshoot/IMG_20120809_020440.jpg [06:09] icequeen, So do yo9u understand the process I suggest for the migration? resizing the migration may have you also reinstalling grub, so you will need a live ubuntu cd for that. [06:10] after i select a boot device it just shows this [06:10] https://dl.dropbox.com/u/49928817/troubleshoot/IMG_20120809_020623.jpg [06:10] zack6849: Could you change a website? [06:10] might i ask why? i dont mind but its a bit of a hassle to upload them again [06:10] aww [06:10] alright [06:11] namoamitabuddha: What country are you in anyway? [06:11] Hi all , may I know what is the command to tar and copy a directory including subdirectory and files ? Actually my ubuntu became corrupt while upgrading , so I want to get a backup data using live dvd of ubuntu. how to do if any one suggest plz, while copying it shows permission deniedhow to make my data backup through command line ! [06:12] zack6849: you could have said you just get a blinking curser upper left corner. [06:12] i said that [06:12] ajnr: you might need to run "chmod" on the directory to obtain ownership [06:12] they asked for images [06:12] KatsumeBlisk: I knew that there was googlable log for #ubuntu, but something is private. [06:12] :/ [06:12] wilee-nilee yup I've got a LiveCD (that's how I installed Wubi in the first place, funnily enough...) I'll boot up my LiveCD, run GPartition, shrink the partition, check to see if it's still working, if so then I'll migrate it [06:12] !patience | ajnr [06:12] ajnr: Don't feel ignored and repeat your question quickly; if nobody knows your answer, nobody will answer you. While you wait, try searching https://help.ubuntu.com or http://ubuntuforums.org or http://askubuntu.com/ [06:13] crimsonmane do you have any clue what i did? [06:13] crimsonmane, I did but dint get ! KatsumeBlisk , ok , ubottu , Sorry ! [06:13] icequeen, cool I would use the windows partitioner to be safe but it probably does not matter, your choice. [06:13] wilee-nilee: Windows partitioner is DANGEROUS. [06:13] ajnr: Sorry about that. ubottu is a bot. I didn't realize someone answered, so I shouldn't have done that. Sorry. [06:13] ajnr: I was looking up the command because I don't frequent here as often as I should. :P [06:14] crimsonmane, I gave chmod -R 777 , but dint get the result ! [06:14] zack6849: you know what you did... what did you do before rebooting? is this an attempted first install? is this a LiveBoot? [06:14] wilee-nilee oh, you think the windows partitioner would be safer? [06:14] namoamitabuddha, not in resizing a windows partition with windows but this is a wubi, so it is a up in gthe air thing in my opinion. [06:14] ajnr: i dont know much about chmod, but there's that plus maybe use sudo on your copy command. [06:14] ajnr, silence is success [06:14] yes, attemted first install gone wrong, it froze during partitioning [06:14] escott, :) [06:14] and my brilliant self decicded t reboot [06:14] icequeen, not sure this is a unusaul area for this channel really. [06:14] crimsonmane: He rebooted while partitioning froze. Now, he's just trying to boot from USB and it's failing. [06:14] wilee-nilee: It would automatically delete filesystem unknown to windows, such as ext. Maybe it's deliberate. [06:14] zack6849: i suspect you did not correctly assign "/" [06:15] OH [06:15] im sorry what? [06:15] wilee-nilee why the hunch that windows partitioner would be safer? do you think a LiveCD GPartition would be alright? [06:15] namoamitabuddha, there is no ext it is a ntfs wubi is a file in windows. [06:15] please tell me you have a solution! D: [06:16] icequeen, I think so I would not shrink it more then half for the migration, since that is a big HD, just to be safe. [06:16] zack6849: remove the HD, CD drive, etc and attempt to boot from usb again [06:16] zack6849: imagebin ok? [06:16] removing the power cable is enough [06:17] oh god [06:17] zack6849: wait wait [06:17] wilnee-nilee, alright, I will shrink it to like 55% or something [06:17] is it possible to move the data as a backup from one partition to another partion in duel boot system ! [06:17] zack6849: is your computer 32 bit and you downlaoded 64 bit? [06:17] nope [06:17] 64bit [06:17] downloaded 64bit [06:17] crimsonmane: It's UEFI too just so you know. [06:17] KatsumeBlisk: omg (barf) [06:17] icequeen, you can run a command to save all the installed apps in the ubuntu install, and then save any extra ppa's so if it breaks and you do a fresh install you could reload what you had. [06:17] zack6849: has linux been installed on this machine previously? [08:01] hostname -fqdn isnt the same as the servicename [08:01] ah [08:01] and i need to set PS1 to the servicename, not the hostname [08:01] and id like to have it dynamic [08:03] as of now im using /etc/servicename to store the hosts servicename, but in the case one host harbors more then one service id like it to use the domain used while connecting with ssh [08:04] PapaSierra: you could use something like "expect" or generate the password hash from script and update the users /etc/shadow entry [08:05] ferni i believe what i'm trying to do is simpler: i.e. when i type $ adduser me it goes on to prompt me for a password. i just want to put my password as a command line arg instead of being prompted for it [08:06] so i want something like: "adduser $LINUXUSER -p $LINUXPASS", only i don't think that -p is correct. but you get what i'm trying to do === JPeterso2 is now known as JPeterson [08:07] PapaSierra: there's adduser and useradd... type "man adduser" [08:07] one works better than the other === someone is now known as lion42 [08:08] well adduser is the high level version of useradd. useradd is linux, adduser is ubuntu's "helper" [08:08] guys - question - i have dual screen - but on the other screen my desktop area overflows physical size of the screen - how to cope with this? [08:08] actually it's debian's, not ubuntu's [08:08] PapaSierra: oh you can also use usermod to set password [08:09] use passwd to set passwords too [08:09] but one of those... useradd or adduser i forget which... does the extra work of creating user folders, while the other one you ahve to set up every. little. thing. on. your. own. [08:09] right but that still doesn't help me get past the prompts that adduser requests [08:09] crimsonmane adduser does the extra work. useradd is the lowlevel one [08:10] @reuf, cant you just adjust through via the "display"menu? [08:10] PapaSierra: then you wanna use the low level one and use all the proper tags. [08:11] ok, since i'm new, but not totally incompitent, could you let me know a "checklist" of what the user needs? username, home dir, password, group? sudo group?? [08:11] uninstall wine case [08:13] PapaSierra: nope... [08:13] PapaSierra: that's why i use the other one [08:13] ;) [08:13] but i go through the steps and fill in the info [08:17]
