knomethe decision is not as easy as changing your wallpaper on a single installation00:00
knomeimagine that we choose the defaults for thousands - if not tens or hundreds of thousands of users and pc's00:00
knomei do think that tutorial is good for new users, and i see why a group of people would want to do those modifications00:01
knomefortunately it only takes 5 minutes, not 5 days00:01
libresourcestability is why is use *buntu, rather than others, so I am beginning to understand #1, thank you for your time00:01

neodragonhello I am trying to use xubuntu 12.04 amd64. I successfully installed it and it works fine in the live environment on the disk, but when I go to boot the fresh install for the first time, after the BIOS post it just goes to a blank screen. I have a nvidia gt 430 1GB pci express with an AMD Phenom II X4 with 4GB of RAM, I have installed other distros on it and they work fine01:04

xubuntu257(I'm french)10:35
xubuntu257Could you help me out  ?10:35
TheSheepnope10:35
TheSheepwe don't know what is the problem10:35
aquixand barely so :p10:36
xubuntu257I'm trying to install voyager and I'm encountering small problems10:36
TheSheepyou need to describe your problems, then, if anybody knows the solution, they will tell you10:37
xubuntu257first of wich is that it's taking forever, I'm not sure wether it's normal10:37
TheSheepwhat is taking forever?10:37
xubuntu257the install10:38
TheSheepis it any particular step that is slow?10:39
xubuntu257yes, the step after the part where you choose the password for the main user10:40
TheSheepis it when it is downloading upgrades from the internet?10:41
xubuntu257then it launches a window that tells you how great voyager is (which it actually is), but it's been showing that window forever10:42
xubuntu257and the thing is, I'm actually able to use the PC, since I'm connected to this chan with it10:42
TheSheepwait, voyager?10:42
xubuntu257yep10:42
TheSheepwhat is that?10:42
xubuntu257http://voyager.legtux.org/10:43
xubuntu257don't you know that version ?10:45
TheSheepno, first time I hear about it10:45
TheSheeplooks like they took xubuntu and modified it10:45
xubuntu257exactly10:45
xubuntu257it's pretty nice10:45
xubuntu257and usually it work just fine10:46
xubuntu257but here, I'm doing it for a friend, on her Eee PC10:46
knomexubuntu257, voyager is not supported in this channel, because it is not a xubuntu "product"10:46
xubuntu257I did it a few days ago, but then something went wrong as she was using it : her password is not recognized anymore, so I started re-installing10:47
Ofloo?10:47
knomeOfloo?10:47
Oflooisn't it just xubuntu with some theme?10:47
xubuntu257ok then, I'll go somewhere else, soory lads and have a nice one10:47
TheSheepxubuntu257: wait10:48
xubuntu257ok*10:48
xubuntu257i'll wait :)10:48
TheSheepxubuntu257: we can't help with the modifications they did, but if it's still mostly xubuntu, then what we know will still apply10:48
xubuntu257that's what i thought, but i'm kind of newbie on linux10:49
Oflooare you doing a migration?10:49
knomeOfloo, i think voyager also does some other modifications, but the general policy is that xubuntu derivatives aren't *officially* supported10:49
xubuntu257no, complete instll10:49
Ofloocause i'm doing an migration of xubuntu from 11 to 12 and it's stuck as well10:49
Ofloowhile new install worked just fine10:49
knomeOfloo, note that the .xx in the version number is also meaningful10:49
Ofloomigration maybe upgrade is better10:49
Oflooknome: i was just wondering10:50
knomeeg. there is no "xubuntu 11", it's either "xubuntu 11.04" or "xubuntu 11.10" :)10:50
Oflooi beleve it was .1010:50
Ofloobut it doesn't matter i'll just do a clean install10:50
Ofloonot really looking for support on that though10:50
knomeupgrade should work too though10:50
xubuntu257i had a migration problem too last month, but I forced it (shut down brutally when it was stuck, and it started just fine after that)10:51
Ofloooh, .. right10:51
Ofloobbs going to cut the power :p10:51
TheSheepxubuntu257: that doesn't sound too good, maybe there is a hardware problem?10:51
xubuntu257maybe, dunno10:51
xubuntu257i was given the computer on which i did it10:51
TheSheepxubuntu257: can you open a terminal, or do you need to wait for the install to finish?10:51
xubuntu257some old geezer was using it for "weird" activities10:52
xubuntu257it's actually just finished now, a window just popped up10:52
xubuntu257so I guess I bothered you for nothing...10:53
xubuntu257sorry, my bad10:53
xubuntu257but it still took forever, maybe the eeepc is a bit "weak"10:53
knomethe eeepc's aren't the most powerful, but even then, stuff should go through if you just wait10:54
TheSheepeeepc are usually rather slow10:54
xubuntu257i'm gonna have to leave, i need to restart the system, but thank you (really) for your time and help10:54
TheSheepno problem, good luck10:55
xubuntu257you should take a look at "voyager", it really is a pretty cool system10:55
xubuntu257cheers !!!!10:55

vanagonHi, I have a bluetooth headset paired as a "headset device", and shows up as being correctly connected in blueman.  However, the device doesn't show up in pavucontrol.  How is a headset configured under Xubuntu?  (I want to use it for skype.)  Thanks for any help!!15:22
holsteinvanagon: i would just try configuring in skype.. does it show there?15:24
vanagonno, it just takes me to pulseaudio setings15:24
vanagon(annoying, since it let's me configure a usb webcam directly)15:24
holsteinit?.. in skype you get re-directed to pulseaudio setting?15:25
holsteininteresting... i do not have any bluetooth hardware to test with on the PC...15:26
vanagonyes, under skype configuration, the sound section just has buttons to open the pulseaudio volume control.15:27
holsteini suppose i would try and take skype out of the equation.. i would try and get the BT working somewhere else first15:29
vanagonit doesn't work anywhere, in the sense that the pulseaudio system doesn't recognize it.  I can't use it as an input/output device for any sound.15:30
vanagonI'm starting to wonder whether 12.04 works with bluetooth headsets at all.  I'm finding some forum posts with the same problem, and have yet to see a report where someone has it working...15:30
holsteini would trust no reports.. one issue is, maybe neither you nor i understand how to configure BT in XFCE.. i know i dont since i dont have the hardware15:31
holsteini might consider trying the main ubuntu live CD just to see what it looks like ther15:32
holsteinhttp://askubuntu.com/questions/107277/how-do-i-switch-to-another-audio-output-sink-in-xfce sure makes it seem like the BT device will be in pavucontrol15:32
holsteinhow about in the terminal when you run aplay -l or arecord -l ?15:33
vanagongood idea.  That doesn't list it either.15:33
vanagonSo maybe this is not a problem with pulseaudio then?15:34
holsteinthen, i suppose it could be not pairing, or showing up...15:34
holsteinvanagon: im ust throwing out some troubleshootin ideas.. i dont have any good thoughts on what it could be yet15:34
vanagonyeah, but blueman is showing it with a good connection.  It even shows a bit rate!15:34
holsteinvanagon: ive been meaning to grab some BT usb device so i can test and be more helpful15:35
vanagonof course!  I appreciate it15:35
vanagonsure.  Or maybe someone will pipe in that has a device hooked up already...15:35
GridCubevanagon, you could try to install gnome-bluetooth using --no-install-recommend from apt-get and see if it works15:35
en1gmai cant believe i have to dload and install ubuntu because remastersys dont work with xubuntu because of its WM. it would be great if someone would get with the peopke in #remastersys and get this fixed so i wouldnt have to use crappy unity15:37
vanagonGridCube: trying it now15:37
vanagonGridCube: do you know how I run this thing?15:37
GridCubeit should be under configuration or accesories15:38
holsteinen1gma: maybe you can volunteer :)15:38
GridCubebut i imagine it wont launch sadly, it deppends on gnome too much15:38
vanagonyeah didn't run15:38
holsteinvanagon: you can try launching from the terminal and seeing the errors15:38
GridCubeblueman does recognises it vanagon ?15:39
vanagonI think I don't want to go down the rabbit hole of getting this to run since its a dependency issue15:39
en1gmaholstein im doing my part. im trying to get someone from here to talk to peoplle in #remastersys to get remastersys working with xubuntu15:39
vanagonyeah blueman pairs the device and shows it as having a good connection15:40
en1gmaits stupid to have to switch distros because xubuntu is the only one it dont work with15:40
GridCubeen1gma, why is that?15:40
en1gmawhen i talked to the devs in #remastersys they say it is because of xubuntu default WM15:40
en1gmaand they will no longer try to get it working15:40
GridCubeO_o15:41
holsteinen1gma: you are from here... its not something i would expect this team to be able to deal with.. the UI is XFCE.. XFCE is quite standard15:41
en1gmaso i guess that means that xubuntu and its default WM is the problem and not theirs15:41
holsteini know remastersys used to work with LXDE just fine15:41
en1gmait works with all distros fne. its just xubuntu15:41
en1gmaso xubuntu and its default WM must be doing something not standard15:42
holsteinen1gma: its just XFCE.. you can literally install debian, and XFCE and try it.. then go back to them and report15:42
en1gmalike i said the default WM15:42
holsteinen1gma: you can also just run XFCE.. pure XFCE right now15:42
holsteinen1gma: XFCE *is* the default WM15:42
en1gmaright15:42
en1gmaits broke15:43
holsteinyou can remove xubuntu from the equation, and run XFCE ontop of what you'd like... test remastersys, and then you can report to them that it is XFCE15:43
en1gmaits either broke or remastersys is broke and from what i learned its not remastersys15:43
en1gmai think they know already15:43
holsteinen1gma: i would suspect there is nothing broken about either one.15:44
en1gmaas they are the ones that told me it was the default wM15:44
holsteinen1gma: they know that its not xubuntu? that it is an incompatibility with remastersys and XFCE?15:44
en1gmalike i said they told me its the default WM. if i install another WM it will work15:44
holsteinen1gma: if you install just plain XFCE, it will work?15:45
en1gmaim not sure. they acted like it was a big problem. so im dloading ubuntu.15:45
en1gmai never did a remastersys before so i not sure what to do15:45
holsteinen1gma: they? the remastersys devs?15:45
en1gmayea15:45
holsteinen1gma: i would try and determine if it is indeed xubuntu or XFCE15:46
Viva_Caligulais this program in the repositories?15:46
en1gmaits XFCE but since xubutnu uses it as default xubuntu isnt supported15:46
en1gmaits in ubuntu repos15:46
holsteinen1gma: i would confirm that.. see if plain xfce works15:46
en1gmait should be in xubuntu? right now im in windows getting ubuntu15:46
en1gmai will aks the devs15:47
bazhang!info remastersys15:47
ubottuPackage remastersys does not exist in precise15:47
bazhangit's not in the repos15:47
bazhangit's a PPA15:47
holsteinyeah.. its been gone for a while... its been "funky" for a while and not very well supported15:47
en1gmaahh15:48
holsteinen1gma: i would suggest trying with XFCE.. in whatever distro you or the remastersys devs suggest... then you can remove xubuntu from the equation and understand why its not really something the xubuntu team can deal with15:48
bazhangjust install the package ubuntu-desktop, no need to install the separate ubuntu iso15:48
Viva_Caligulaoem-config-remaster is the package, right?15:48

en1gmahttp://www.remastersys.com/ubuntu.html15:49

bazhangen1gma, please dont crosspost to multiple ubuntu support channels15:49
holsteinXFCE*15:50

en1gmabazhang are you talking about the post i made in ubuntu 15mins ago and a 1000 lines of code has went by since then?15:50
en1gmaso i came here?15:51
bazhangViva_Caligula, thats not the package. remastersys is a PPA prepared by the remastersys people15:51
holsteinen1gma: doesnt really matter what bazhang is referring to.. its a suggestiong and good15:51
bazhangen1gma, no, the one just a couple of minutes ago.15:51
holsteinpractice15:51
en1gmayea i know if i was spamming all channels but this is irc and one line about 15mins ago has nothing to do with this channel current15:52
Viva_CaligulaSo it's not in the repository then -_-15:52
holsteinen1gma: cool... just keep it in mind as you post..15:52
en1gmacouple mins ago i did "!info remastersys"15:52
en1gmai always do15:52
Viva_Caligulai was afk on the other computer15:52
en1gmaanyhow back on topic15:52
en1gmai gonna install xubuntu amd 64 desktop and i should make xfce pure?15:53
Viva_Caligulawhen you login, just start an xfce session instead of a xubuntu session15:53
holsteinen1gma: i would ask remastersys how you are to make an XFCE based remaster.. if xubuntu didnt work, i would expect it not to work.. i would remove xubuntu from the euqaation15:54
Viva_Caligulathat'll have the same effect as xfce without xubuntu packages on ubuntu15:54
en1gmaholstein you told me earlier to make it pure and it might work15:54
holsteinen1gma: if you are being told "its xubuntu's fault" i challenge that with "ok, then how do i make an XFCE remaster"15:54
en1gmai said 100x already that they said it was "XUBUNTU DEFAULT WM"15:55
holsteinen1gma: OK... and what was the suggested way to make an XFCE base remaster?15:55
en1gmathey said to switch WM15:55
holsteinen1gma: AH, so its not xubuntu? its an XFCE issue?15:56
Viva_Caligulaen1gma: that's xfce, neither is broken per se, they just aren't compatible with one another15:56
en1gmai never siad it was xubuntu15:56
en1gmaonly xubuntu wont be supported15:56
holsteinen1gma: xubuntu or XFCE?15:56
Viva_Caligulayou can install gnome on xubuntu if you want, you can piclk a gnome session at login15:57
en1gmaxubuntu is not supported because of its default WM15:57
Viva_Caligula*pick15:57
holsteinen1gma: so, all of XFCE then? all XFCE based distros? including xubuntu? and debian testing?15:57
en1gmai think they said get gnome 2.x or something15:57
en1gmatesting is never supported is it?15:58
Viva_CaligulaI've seen arch based distros with xfce as the deault even15:58
Viva_Caligulawhat about those?15:58
en1gmahow about the devs here tell me how to make a remaster/backup live cd so i dont have to use remastersys15:58
bazhangI'm on the remastersys homepage15:58
en1gmapost the script somewhere15:58
GridCubeViva_Caligula, if the problem seems to be with xfce, what help does that will bring him?15:59
bazhangthere is nothing about using gnome2 only. they have a repo for precise, in fact which is gnome315:59
GridCubeen1gma, im sorry but if they dont want to work with xfce, one of the 3 more popular dm out there, then thats their problem15:59
en1gmai made a custom live cd (bt5r2) using a couple different scripts awhile back15:59
Viva_CaligulaI wasn'ting asking for him to try them, I was asking if they're supported15:59
en1gmabasically i told them i have xubuntu and they told me xubuntu is not supported because of the default WM16:00
en1gmathey siad if i install another WM it will work16:00
Viva_Caligulaen1gma: There are several programs on the repositories that do what that one does16:00
GridCubeen1gma, if you dont like Unity you can go and grab some other distro like mint that has mate or any other wm and try them16:00
Viva_Caligula*in16:00
GridCubeits not our fault that they are not willing to make it work, sorry16:00
en1gmaeither way i like xubuntu and there is no way to remaster the live cd?16:01
en1gmathats all i really want16:01
GridCube!costumcd16:01
bazhang!remaster16:01
ubottuInterested in remastering the Ubuntu !LiveCD or !Alternate installer? See: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCDCustomization and https://help.ubuntu.com/community/InstallCDCustomization - Or use tools such as http://uck.sourceforge.net/ or http://linux.dell.com/wiki/index.php/DRU_Disc_Remastering_Utility16:01
holsteinen1gma: i dont mean to be combatitive... the only point im making is, its not a xubuntu issue, its an XFCE and remastersys issue.. and the xubuntu team wont be able to address those inconsistencies16:01
GridCube!customlivecd16:01
en1gmasmaybe if the xubuntu team told xfce devs there is a problem maybe they can fix it.16:02
Viva_Caligulaoem-config-remaster16:02
en1gmahave any of you made/done the remaster live cd?16:02
en1gmajust want to make sure i do the right one16:03
Viva_CaligulaIt's not the problem of the GUI that a certain program doesn't work in it16:03
holsteinen1gma: sure.. if something was broken, but its not.. its a compatibility issue.. niether are broken16:03
knomeif you can pinpoint the problem, please file a bug and post the bug number to #xubuntu-devel16:03
en1gmaok maybe if someone here would tell xfce team there is a compat issue maybe they can fix it16:03
en1gmaim pretty sure the makers of remastersys have done that16:03
holsteinen1gma: there is nothing imcomatible here... it'll need to be the remastersys team that becomes compatible with current XFCE and gtk3 or whatever the issue is16:04
en1gmait looks like the people with remastersys will keep on saying xubuntu is not supported then16:04
holsteinen1gma: sure... and theres nothing xubuntu can do to "fix" that.. the team cannot "fix" all the projects... expecially those that have been dropped from the repos16:05
en1gmamaybe that project was dropped because they say xubuntu is not supported16:06
holsteinen1gma: i would explore other more supported avenues of creating live CD's... consider trying to be a liason for the remastersys team and whoever upstream they could speak with16:06
en1gma:)16:06
en1gmaim gonna try xubuntu with a different UI first and hope that will work16:06
en1gmabut if im gonna do that shouldnt i just use ubuntu16:07
holsteinen1gma: i would ask them... the xubuntu team didnt drop it from the repos... it would have been dropped upstream16:07
en1gmathe whole thing about xubuntu is its UI isnt it?16:07
en1gmaok i gonna reboot and install xubuntu and fool around with remastersys and see if i can try and get it to work with xfce pure or something16:08
holsteinen1gma: you can use ubuntu if you like... xubuntu is ubuntu... but if you want XFCE support in remastersys, you'll need to ask them for it16:08
en1gmak16:08
en1gmai actually love xubuntu. its the cloest thing to ubuntu used to be that i have found16:09
en1gmai hate unity16:09
en1gmalol16:09
en1gmakubuntu is to bloated16:09
bazhang!ot16:09
ubottu#xubuntu is the Xubuntu support channel, #xubuntu-devel for discussion regarding development of Xubuntu, and #xubuntu-offtopic is for random chatter. Welcome!16:09
en1gmaok i gonna do some testing16:10
en1gmathanks for the suggestion16:10

craigbass1976In Gnome 2, I could have one window open and another behind it.  I could hover over the back window and scoll with the mouse wheel, but it would stay in back.  Is it possible to do that in xubuntu as well?  Right now, the back window will come up front and be in focus when I scroll over it.18:31
TheSheepcraigbass1976: you can make them not raise when they receive focus18:40
TheSheepcraigbass1976: but they will still become focused18:40
recon69_laphi all, I'm trying to setup ssh with rsa, trying to copy the id_rsa.pub to  ~/.ssh/authorized_keys on the server but says the file does not exist. am i missing some step?18:53
recon69_lapnever mind, I just needed to create the dir .ssh18:56
craigbass1976TheSheep, no way to shut that off?19:07
TheSheepcraigbass1976: to shut what off? the fact that a window becomes active when clicked? no...19:13
craigbass1976TheSheep, , No, just when hovered over while the scroll wheel spins.19:14
TheSheepcraigbass1976: the scroll wheel counts as clicks19:15
craigbass1976Aha...19:16
SysiTheSheep: you can disable that actually, window manager tweaks >> accessibility >> all mouse buttons activate window19:39
TheSheepSysi: but it doesn't work, I tried19:40
=== knome_ is now known as knome
SysiI'll test..19:40
TheSheepSysi: oh, I tried the one in window manager >> focus19:41
TheSheepSysi: I missed the one you are talking about, shame the guy left :(19:41
TheSheepI wonder why the 'tweaks' settings are *still* not integrated into the window manager settings19:42

GridCubeit says "gtk+ version" so no kde23:32
martinphoneoops23:32
martinphonei like ifstat, but it wont work for 30 hours, given the limited ammount of lines the terminal remembers23:33
GridCubeyou could > it to a file23:34
martinphonehow GridCube ?23:35
GridCubesomething something > /path/to/log.file23:35
GridCubeit dumps the stuff to the log.file23:35
GridCubeit works with any bash command23:36
GridCube(it also works on any DOS terminal as well)23:36
martinphoneim a bash idiot23:36
GridCube:)23:36
GridCubewe all learn one day23:37
martinphonehow many lines does the terminal anyway? can I increase the number?23:37
martinphonethe terminal remember anyway23:37
GridCubesure, in xfce4-terminal its default to 100023:37
GridCubebut dumping to a file is actually smarter23:39
GridCubehttp://imagebin.org/22469623:39
martinphoneyes...23:39
GridCubemartinphone, try it, do ls > ls.log23:40
GridCubeand check the ls.log file you just created :D23:40
martinphonels.log lists every file and folder of my home dir23:42
GridCube:D23:42
GridCubebecause it dumped all the output of ls to the ls.log file23:42
GridCubeyou can do the same with any terminal commands23:42
martinphonea now I get it.. ls -l23:43
GridCubeif you do >> it will append the outputs to the file instead of replacing it23:43
martinphoneGridCube, if I leave the laptop on for 30 hours and at the end of that period of time I execute ifstat > ifstat.log, will it print all lines since minute 0:00?23:44
GridCubeno23:44
GridCubeyou need to have it running from the begining23:44
GridCubeit will save stuff all the time it runs23:45
GridCubethen at the 30's hour you can check it  all what you want23:45
martinphoneok, I executed ifstat > ifstat.log and terminal doesnt resolve, it means it is recording, right?23:45
GridCubeyes it should23:45
martinphonesweet it works23:46
GridCubeyou can see the file grow by the way23:46
martinphonethx23:46
martinphonejust did so23:46
GridCubeso i guess you can tail it, but i never used tail23:46
martinphonethis one is enough, noob needs to ask: if I shut the ifstat active window, ifstat.log will stop recording...23:47
GridCubeso yeah, on other terminal you could: tail ifstat.log23:47
GridCubeand it should show you the last 10 lines or so23:47
=== `mOOse` is now known as m00se
GridCubeno, i dont know how tail works :(23:50
GridCubemartinphone, yes it will stop23:51
