Mamarokwell, you probably have several output devices there, test them09:29
gillie-monsteryeah ive done this, but in a different gui09:29
MamarokI don't remember the ThinkPad R32, does it have hardware keys for sound? I assume you tested those09:29
Mamarokwell, you cna also test it with Phonon in the Systemsettings -> Mulitmedia09:30
Mamarokbut since Kubuntu 12.04 uses pulseaudio testing with PA directly makes sense09:30
gillie-monsterim not familiar with this computer, it used to be a corperate laptop but was given to my neice for college. something about its hardware design makes it too slow for windows09:31
gillie-monsteryes phonon was what i was using09:31
Mamarokyou can try that as well, but as I said, Phonon is built with PA suport, so testing with PA directly makes sense09:32
gillie-monsterlets move on09:32
gillie-monsterwhats next?09:32
Mamarokgillie-monster: you tested all output configurations? Then try a different backend for Phonon, that is in Systemsettings -> Multimedia -> Phonon -> Backend09:33
gillie-monsteryes09:34
gillie-monsterin ur tool too09:34
Mamarokyou will have eventually to restart KDE to make sure phonon uses the other backend09:34
Mamarokdefault is the gstreamer backend, alternative would be phonon-backend-vlc, you might have to install that first09:34

ShuraHi, saw that : http://www.kubuntu.org/news/amarok-2616:18
ShuraBut 2.6 is not in the repo (or is it just me ?).16:18
* TheLordOfTime looks16:18
bazhangYou can get it from the Kubuntu Backports PPA (alongside KDE SC 4.9). Shura16:18
Shurabazhang : i've added the repo (as mentionned in the news) but amarok 2.6 is not present16:20

Shurahttps://launchpad.net/~kubuntu-ppa/+archive/backports16:20
bazhangShura, added how. and did you apt-get update after adding16:20
Shurasudo apt-add-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports16:21
TheLordOfTimeShura:  the news about 2.6 points to the Quantal repos, they have 2.6, and its likely in the backports.16:21
* TheLordOfTime checks the backports16:21
TheLordOfTimeShura:  did you apt-get update?16:21
TheLordOfTime(with sudo)16:21
ShuraYep16:21
TheLordOfTimeoh hang on a sec16:21
TheLordOfTimebazhang:  amarok: 2:2.5.0-0ubuntu4~oneiric1~ppa116:21
bazhangTheLordOfTime, surely you mean Shura16:22
TheLordOfTimeit doesnt appear to be backported for Precise.16:22
RiddellShura: you could be right16:22
TheLordOfTimenope, i'm pointing at you.16:22
TheLordOfTimeRiddell too :p16:22
bazhangthats from the amarok-2.6 page16:22
TheLordOfTimeRiddell:  according to my brief scan of that backport ppa, amarok was not backported for Precise (2.6)16:22
TheLordOfTimei can confirm Quantal has 2.6, though.  :)16:22
ShuraSo i'm not so silly ?16:22
asfyxiaShura; did you also apt-get dist-upgrade and restart?16:23
RiddellShura: you're very sensible16:23
ShuraYeah yeah i updated, upgrade and everything16:24
asfyxiaokay, just checking ;-)16:24
RiddellShura: ok I've run the copy command to copy it to the backports PPA again, lets see if it works this time16:24
Shuraphonon-backend-gstreamer has been updated/installed but not amarok 2616:24
ShuraRiddell : ok thanks16:25
ShuraI'm the first to report that ?16:26
Riddellno others have said stuff but I've been too busy to look16:26
RiddellShura: it might be due to the downtime happening in launchpad this weekend (moving data centre)16:27
bazhangfirst I've seen at least here16:27
Shuraok ok16:27
TheLordOfTimeRiddell:  is LP moving to a new datacenter alongside the move of ubuntuforums?16:28
TheLordOfTimethey seem to have the same downtime scheduled.16:28
RiddellTheLordOfTime: yes I think so16:29

clariondavid: thanks16:43
TheLordOfTimedavid__:  you need to be careful with that16:51
TheLordOfTimedepending on what files you're looking at.16:51
TheLordOfTimefor example, you wouldnt want to purge your /etc/hosts file if its older than a day16:52
TheLordOfTimeyou'd want to limit the scope to just your own folders, or something.16:52
DaskreechTheLordOfTime: Or run the file as your self17:03

pedahzurThis may be a simple question, but I haven't been able to find it in any of the settings. In KMail2, if I left-arrow at the first message in a mailbox, it wraps around to the last message.  It didn't do this in KMail1. How do I prevent this behavior?21:02

gillie-monsteri have some laptops i am donating to the needy that have SoundMax Audio Device soundcards and im getting no sound.  alsa is not muted or turned down21:26
gillie-monsteraplay -l lists an intel ich3 as the sound device21:26
sonic|2do you have pulseaudio installed?21:27
gillie-monsterthe one i need working asap is an ibm thinkpad r32 which is supposed to work with suse and redhat according to lenovo21:28
gillie-monsteri think so let me verify that21:28
sonic|2do you have the speakers set as default device in system settings->multimedia?21:29
gillie-monsteri dont understand the setting. what i have listed is mono output w/ or w/o Amplifier21:29

gillie-monsternothing in either gui that mentions speaker or headphone21:35
gillie-monsterjust LFE stereo or mono output / Amplifier21:36
sonic|2that's not the name of your sound device?21:37
gillie-monsteron my laptop that works i see the manufacturer name of the device, on the laptops with no sound, i see no mention of a manufacturer21:38
gillie-monsterthe 2 with no sound are old laptops. both have SoundMax audio. the working one is a brand new computer with ATI HDMI21:39
sonic|2some computers dont show manufacturer names, it's different between machinese21:40
sonic|2in phonon click on the device and click test, see if you get a sound there21:40
gillie-monsternope21:41
gillie-monsteri should be hearing popping noises when i adjust the volume, but im not21:41
gillie-monsterone of the computers has an anolog volume dial that makes lots of noise through the speakers when they are working corrently21:42
gillie-monsterno noise tells me the device is sending no power to the speakers21:43
sonic|2and you said you checked the volume level in the alsamixer?21:43
gillie-monsteryes21:43
gillie-monsterim telling u this isnt a volume level problem. i know that for a fact. i21:44
gillie-monsterif the speakers on the Compaq were working corrently u would hear static from the speakers when u adjust the volume with the dial, regaudless of if they are muted or turned down21:44
sonic|2headphones dont work either?21:47
gillie-monsteryeah tried that21:47
gillie-monstertotal silence. normally u can hear the computer thinking if its onboard audio. all the eemi n rfi21:47

snagglepussgillie-monster:    might want to check to see if you have an audio driver for your card installed by typing (copy/paste)  the following two commands in a terminal:   lspci | grep -i Audio22:16
snagglepussgillie-monster:   then............   lspci -v -s 00:xx.x             (uses the 00.xx.x number from previous command ie 00:14.2)22:17
snagglepussgillie-monster:  or can also install     inxi    which not only gives audio related information but other info concerning you system too!  (can't understand why it's not part of the default ubuntu install, imho).22:19
gillie-monsterlspci says its an intel ac'97 audio, that doesnt seem corrent. windows n Lenovo.com say its a SoundMax22:21
snagglepussgillie-monster:   the SoundMax is just the model name given by manufacturer.  the intel reference is the name of the actual sound chip itself and that is the information you need for correct drivers.   you should also see driver related information similar to the following if you have audio drivers installed:   Kernel driver in use: snd_hda_intel22:23
snagglepuss        Kernel modules: snd-hda-intel22:23
gillie-monstersnd_intel8x022:24
gillie-monstersnd-intel8x022:26
snagglepussgillie-monster:   maybe do a google and see if there are any problems relating to that particular driver22:26

snagglepussgillie-monster:    one other thing you could try too is killing pulseaudio (or uninstalling it)....some cards don't seem to work well with pulseaudio but work ok with alsa.  again doing a google on that subject should turn up something if there is a problem with pulseaudio and that particular soundchip/card22:28
mirakI can't even read a config menu to find the right option, that's ridiculus22:28
monkeyjuicemirak:  what font size are you using22:28
