spearwielderI'm a local IT guy trying to fix a computer, and haven't dealt much with edubuntu previously, so I thought I'd come here with my issue20:29
spearwielderbasically the client upgraded recently [from 10.10 to 11.04 I think], and now the system won't boot20:29
spearwielderwell, it boots, but seems to immediately crash upon trying to display anything graphical20:29
jocarterso you get a grub menu at least?20:30
jocartercan you get into the recovery mode option?20:30
spearwielderit ends up with what looks like a login screen [with broken image], an error message, and the mouse/keyboard nonfunctional20:30
spearwielderlast dmesg log line is [20.010700] [drm] initialized overlay support20:30
spearwielderno grub menu loads, no20:31
jocarterwhich display chip? and did they previously install a proprietary driver?20:31
spearwielderall hardware tests appear to be normal20:31
spearwielderI'm not quite sure how to look up the display chip or driver into20:32
spearwielder*info20:32
jocarterhow did you initialize the upgrade?20:32
jocarteralso, you could perhaps boot from a live cd (if you have one), typing "lspci" from a command line will show you which display card it has (among other things)20:33
spearwielderI didn't do the upgrade, it was done by the user20:37
spearwielderit was brought to me because it no longer works20:37
jocarterok.20:37
jocarterI doubt the user did something like an "apt-get dist-upgrade" in that case :)20:37
spearwieldervery possible20:38
spearwielderI'm tempted to tell him that it's fucked and just reinstall20:38
spearwielderI can get all of his data too, so that's not an issue20:38
spearwielderbut I'm not really sure it's worth the time spent trying to repair it20:39
jocarteras a side-note, the 'upgrade' option on the dvd actually wipes out the rest of the system except for /home20:41
jocarterso you might be able to just pop in a 12.04 disc and choose the upgrade option and install any other software that was previously installed20:42
spearwielderhmm, that's a thought20:42
