trimetaMy server can send mail to itself (tested using the mail command, which comes from heirloom-mailx in order to gain Maildir support, and with mutt), but cannot send messages to addresses off the server. What additional configuration do I need? Could my router be blocking the packets?03:31
Psi-JackOkay. On Ubuntu Server 12.04, what could /possibly/ be appending nameserver 127.0.0.1 to the top of my resolv.conf file for whatever reason? It's a server, statically assigned IP.03:31
trimetaI used tasksel to install the "Mail server" packages, but I suppose they're probably not all configured correctly...03:32
Psi-Jacktrimeta: Heck, your ISP itself could be directly blocking outbound SMTP03:32
trimetaPsi-Jack: Hmm, true. Is there a way to test if the messages are leaving the server correctly?03:32
qman__trimeta, the 'internet site' mail configuration is ready to go out of the box03:32
qman__but your ISP and everything else must be set up to actually get mail to other people03:32
trimetaSo if I can send mail @localhost, but not @gmail.com, it's probably a problem with my ISP?03:33
Psi-Jacktrimeta: telnet mailin-02.mx.aol.com 2503:33
trimetaLooks like it's timing out.03:33
Psi-Jacktrimeta: Does that work, even if it may immediately disconnect you with a message: 421 mtain-ma03.r1000.mx.aol.com Service unavailable - try again later03:33
qman__gmail (and most mail hosts) will not accept mail unless you have a static IP that is not blacklisted and have proper PTR DNS set up03:33
trimetaE.g., I see "Trying 64.12.90.65..." followed by nothing.03:33
Psi-Jacktrimeta: And you're on sbcglobal?03:34
Psi-Jacktrimeta: In Florida?03:34
trimetaThe server is in the same place I'm IRCing from, yes.03:34
Psi-JackOkay, telnet mx2.sbcglobal.am0.yahoodns.net 2503:34
trimetaSame effect, Trying 98.138.206.39... followed by nothing.03:35
Psi-Jackor telnet smtp.sbcglobal.yahoo.com 2503:35
trimetaOK, that one works.03:35
Psi-JackYep03:35
Psi-JackISP is blocking you outright.03:35
qman__yeah03:36
Psi-JackCall, complain, refuse to pay, fire them if need-be.03:36
qman__that's a typical configuration03:36
Psi-JackIt's an unacceptable "configuration"03:36
qman__you need a static IP and typically a business account03:36
Psi-Jackheh, very few people these days even use their ISP's own mail services.03:36
trimetaIt's all webmail or work-provided, right.03:36
Psi-JackOr, google mail, which provides full SMTP+IMAP+POP303:37
Psi-JackSomething that's universally usable, and not tied strictly to your ISP.03:37
Psi-JackAnyway, anyone see my question earlier? ;)03:38
trimetaWell, I only really wanted this to have it report to me if anything bad happened to the system...hopefully it'll survive long enough for me to log in and get the "You have one new message" notification.03:38
Psi-Jacktrimeta: Well, what you could do is setup ssmtp, or setup your MTA to use the previous SMTp host that worked as a "smarthost" relay.03:39
Psi-JackSSMTP if you don't need local mail delivery, an actual MTA if you want both local and relayed.03:39
qman__trimeta, what I did before I got a static IP was set up a gmail account for it03:39
qman__and configured postfix to use that to email me03:39
Psi-JackEh... The smarthost route usually works.03:39
qman__but yeah03:40
Psi-JackConfiguring an MTA to specifically use google's authentication is excessively borderline insanity.03:40
qman__odds are that mail relay will accept your mail03:40
trimetaI'll try dpkg-reconfigure with smtp.sbcglobal.yahoo.com, I guess.03:40
qman__other than having the password in a config file, I didn't really have a problem with it03:40
qman__it took about 20 minutes reading a guide on the net03:40
Psi-JackAnyways, /something/ keeps adding "nameserver 127.0.0.1" to my Ubuntu 12.04 server for no obvious reason, and it's breaking my dns lookup for the servers.03:41
qman__probably resolvconf03:41
* patdk-lap wonders what is so hard about configuring an mta to use googles authenication03:42
patdk-lapgoogle uses normal standard smtp tls + auth03:42
patdk-laplike any mailserver should03:42
qman__on port 58703:42
qman__it's not very complicated03:42
patdk-lapwell, port 587 is the correct port too03:43
Psi-JackYeah, but I don't see why resolvconf would be adding it in, specifically03:43
Psi-JackI see no rule for it to.03:43
patdk-lappsijack did you *completely* miss reading the 12.04 release notes?03:43
patdk-lapdue to changes in dns, we now run a *local* dns server03:43
patdk-lapthis local dns server does dnssec03:43
Psi-Jackpatdk-lap: Not on SERVER, no.03:43
Psi-JackDesktop using DHCP, yes.03:44
patdk-lapthere is likely a local copy of dnsmasq running :)03:44
Psi-JackThere is no.03:44
Psi-Jack+t03:44
patdk-laphmm, I haven't had it do that on server03:44
patdk-lapmaybe a package you installed brought it along for the ride? :)03:44
Psi-JackYeah, mine's doing it on a /SERVER/ install. Which I installed bind on because it's my external facing DNS resolver+zones03:44
Psi-JackUgh...03:45
Psi-JackF'scking bind9's init script is doing it!03:45
Psi-JackIn the lo.named rule.03:46
patdk-lapI haven't used bind since bind 403:46
Psi-Jackheh, i have 4 primary bind9 servers. 2 internal which use the 2 external facing ones for a resolver.03:47
Psi-JackAnd there we go! DNS is no longer adding 127.0.0.103:48
Psi-JackFrickin PITA.03:48
Psi-Jackpatdk-lap: What do you use for DNS these days?03:50
patdk-lappdns03:51
patdk-lapbind just doesn't support doing anything efficent03:51
Psi-Jackheh03:52
patdk-lapI seriously cant be managing domains in text files03:52
Psi-JackHmm03:52
Psi-JackHeck, I just manage mine through webmin, personally, internally secured.03:52
* patdk-lap wouldn't use webmin03:53
Psi-JackSo you use PowerDNS with an SQL backend, I presume?03:53
patdk-lapand isn't sure if webmin would even scale up to supporting 100's of k domains03:53
patdk-lapI have used just about every backend pdns supports, ldap, sql, geo, pipe03:54
patdk-lapplus, for recursive usage, I found it to be 3x faster than bind8, when generating webstats03:55

jgcampbell300hey hey11:50
jgcampbell300I am in need of advice. I want to setup ubuntu server, I need a web server but there are so many options to look at and need advice in witch way to go. I would like to be able to move my server to a cloud eventualy and would also like to be able to host many sites and sub sites .... any thoughts11:50
Picijgcampbell300: You usually can't go wrong with apache.11:51
jgcampbell300ya i usualy run apache ... so what do you think about being able to move my server to new hardware easily... some kina vbox or cloud image ?11:53
jgcampbell300im gona build everything on a 8100 dell at my house but need to move it to a power edge when its done ... dont want any hardware conflicts11:53
Picijgcampbell300: depends what other third party stuff you need. Its rather easy and trivial to move a website thats built on php, mysql, and apache to a new server without issues, but once you start pulling in other things it gets more complicated.11:58
jgcampbell300Pici, well im gona be working with oscommerce and well alot of stuff ... witch is what is stumping me12:06
jgcampbell300as far as managing multi hosts can anyone recommend anything12:09
fixxxermetHey guys.  I have a local mirror via apt-mirror, mirroring lucid and precise 64-bit main, restricted, universe and multiverse.  My 64-bit precise client is pointing to my local mirror, and is trying to download a 'binary-i386' file.  Why would it be looking for i386 when it is a 64-bit server?  http://pastie.org/4561891 are my errors.12:31
fixxxermetHmm, looks like I need to specify deb [arch=amd64] ... in my sources.list.  Why wouldn't a 64bit host assume arch=amd64?12:33
zulDaviey: im going to add some fixes for f3 for these sru updates12:36
rbasakfixxxermet: by default amd64 will fetch i386 package indexes too, since there are various things in i386 that are useful to amd64 too. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MultiarchSpec for details12:41
fixxxermetrbasak: Was just reading that page :)  I'll try arch=amd64 and see if I miss anything12:42
RoyKhttps://access.redhat.com/knowledge/docs/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux/6/html/Performance_Tuning_Guide/s-storage-fs.html <-- this is outright stupid! redhat claims ext4 "supports up to 16TiB"...12:44
patdk-wkroyk, heh?12:47
patdk-wkext4 has only supported upto 16tb, till this year12:48
patdk-wkplus, that is a redhat doc, I'm willing to bet, ext4 in rhel6 doesn't have tools that support ext4 > 16tb12:48
=== mcclurmc_away is now known as mcclurmc
RoyKpatdk-wk: iirc ext4 has supported > 16TiB for some time, but e2fsprogs hasn't supported creating it13:00
RoyKe2fstools in rhel6 has a 16TiB limit, yes, just tested13:00
RoyKubuntu doesn't have such a limit13:00
xnoxpatdk-wk: RoyK: in ubuntu quantal that is supported.13:01
xnoxpatdk-wk: the version of e2fsprogs in ubuntu precise can cause datalos with > 16 TiB13:01
RoyKand XFS isn't very good for storage for adaptive streaming, meaning lots if smallish files - xfs sucks rather badly on metadata operations13:01
RoyKxnox: it works in precise too13:01
RoyKoh, data loss??13:01
RoyKI guess a fix should be released, then?13:01
xnoxRoyK: Read the release notes for e2fsprogs.13:01
RoyKwhere?13:02
xnoxRoyK: if I find more time yes... currently we need to bisect the git log & come up with a test plan.13:02
patdk-wkit's really pointless for a filesystem to support more, if nothing supports using it :) so yes, it HAD a practical limit of 16tb :)13:02
xnoxRoyK: it's hosted on sourceforge I believe. google for it, should be top result.13:02
RoyKany particular version?13:03

LabThugSo, https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ServerTeam/MAAS  what are you supposed to do if you do NOT own the network?   that document does NOT "look at both of these ways to run MAAS."15:08

DeDennisEvening all :-)17:18
DeDennisCan someone help out with configure raid5, i`ve been trying all day and looked up different guide on the internet, and i can`t seem to get it working17:19
xnoxDeDennis: existing system or new install?17:21
DeDennisNew install, i have 4 250GB S-ata harddisks17:23
DeDennisCurrently i`m on the "partition disks" screen17:23
DeDennisxnox, Do you have a link/guide which can help me setup?17:26
xnoxDeDennis: don't have a link google for "Ubuntu Server Guide 12.04"17:29
xnoxunder installation there is "advanced" and "software raid"17:29
xnoxDeDennis: in short, enter each drive and mark it "physical volume for software raid"17:30
xnoxDeDennis: after all of them done. Enter configure RAID and configure RAID517:30
xnoxAfter you have your raid device you can automatically  partition it, or setup partitions/lvm as you wish.17:30
DeDennisThanks xnox17:33
DeDennisOne more question, i have 4 harddisks, 3 active and 1 spare, shouldnt my netto storage be 750GB? (3x 250GB) ?with 1x 250GB spare?17:35
DeDennisreason for asking is, partition disks screen is telling me i have 500GB in raid5 device17:35
xnoxDeDennis: sounds correct. Let me calculate.17:36
DeDennisSteps i`ve done in the "Multiple device" configuration menu:17:37
DeDennis1. create MD device17:37
DeDennis2. Software raid device type: RAID517:38
xnoxDeDennis: space efficiency of RAID5 is 1 − 1/n17:38
xnoxDeDennis: with 3 drives (spares don't count) you have 2/3 of your max capasity.17:38
xnoxDeDennis: hence 500GB17:38
DeDennisah isee17:38
xnoxDeDennis: spare is exactly that, a spare, such that one drive can fail-over.17:38
DeDennisthen the 500GB was right ye :-) mis calculation from my side17:38
xnoxDeDennis: and then you can have one more to fail (due to RAID5) only after that you will be running degraded.17:39
xnoxDeDennis: I use the table at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAID for this things.17:39
DeDennisThanks a lot xnox, he is installing right now :-)17:41

smoserjdstrand, ping, or mdeslaur19:09
smoseri'm looking at bug 100696319:09
uvirtbotLaunchpad bug 1006963 in cloud-init "sources.list configuration does not cover security" [Medium,Triaged] https://launchpad.net/bugs/100696319:09
=== cpg|away is now known as cpg
jdstrandwhat is the question?19:10
smoserbasically, right now the user can specify an apt mirror, but that does not affect 'security.ubuntu.com'19:10
smosererr.. those entries in sources.list19:10
smoserwould it be better to allow them to specify "security_mirror", or just "disable_security_mirrors"19:10
jdstrandsmoser: from my own experience, being able to specify security_mirror is very handy19:11
mdeslaursmoser: you shouldn't disable the security mirrors19:11
mdeslaursmoser: we install them by default so an outdated mirror doesn't prevent security updates from being installed19:11
jdstrandmdeslaur: "b.) arm. For arm, there is no security.ubuntu.com"19:12
=== matsubara is now known as matsubara-afk
=== cpg is now known as cpg|away
jdstrandI guess that is happening in ports...19:12
smoseri'm also interested in fully offline19:12
smoserand if i write those entries (security.ubuntu.com) then apt-get update is busted for someone's internal only cloud.19:13
jdstrandyeah, arm* is all in ports19:13
smoserand solving that problem by saying "set apt_security_mirror to the same value as apt_mirror" doesn't really accomplish anything.19:13
smoserie, doing apt_security_mirror == apt_mirror is the same as disabling the entries.19:14
smoser(except for potentially makign apt work harder, i'm not sure)19:14
jdstrandsmoser: so, for arm, you should point at ports.ubuntu.com19:14
jdstrand(as the default)19:14
jdstrandthen you have security_mirror available for pople to override19:15
jdstrandmaybe security_mirror='' means 'omit'19:15
jdstrandsmoser: see http://ports.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-ports/dists/19:16
jdstrandnotice 'quantal-security'19:16
jdstrandyou'll want that be default to address mdeslaur's comment19:16
jdstrandbut an organization should be able to override that if they want. we do it other places, we should do it here to imo19:17
smoseri dont see how that addresses that comment.19:17
jdstrandsmoser: so, part of the problem is that on arm there is no security.ubuntu.com19:17
smoserif ports.ubuntu.com is outdated and ports.ubuntu.com/quantal-security is being used for security updates, nothing is better off.19:17
jdstrandsmoser: security.ubuntu.com is clearly the default. it should be special-cased19:17
jdstrandsmoser: rather than just disabled19:17
jdstrandsmoser: you misunderstand19:18
=== cpg|away is now known as cpg
jdstrandsmoser: the security mirror should point to ports.ubuntu.com... -security19:18
jdstrandnot security.ubuntu.com... -security19:18
smoserright.19:18
jdstrand(but only for those architectures that aren't on security.ubuntu.com)19:19
smoserbut there is no difference.19:19
jdstrandsmoser: sure there is19:19
smosermdstrands' statement was not to disable, so if the -updates mirror was out of date, then the -security mirror might not be.19:19
jdstrandsmoser: 'quantal' != 'quantal-security'19:19
jdstrandsmoser: ports is not a mirror19:19
smoserbut if those 2 things are the same host (ports.ubuntu.com) then the likelyhood of one being up and the other not is low.19:19
jdstrandsmoser: ports gets updated at the same time as security.ubuntu.com19:20
jdstrandsmoser: I believe mdeslaur's point was that if you choose some.random.mirror/... -security|-updates then it is out of date19:21
jdstrandpotentially out of date19:21
jdstrandand that isn't a good *default*19:21
jdstrandpeople should be able to adjust that for their requirements imo19:21
smoserok. i'll run my solution by you. thanks, jdstrand19:22

cudgelhello.  i've got 12.04 running as a VBoxHeadless VM on my laptop here.  since it's headless,  want to have it always boot the default kernel, no questions asked.  if there's some sort of issue, ok, I'll deal with it through the GUI.  Essentially I want to never display the grub menu.  So, I've configured /etc/grub.d/00_header, run update-grub, that all works fine.  however, when I recently upgraded all my packages,19:52

ubuntu_I am wondering is rdesktop only command line . And only meant for remote desktop into a microsoft server from a linux box. Or does it support VNC sessions as well and that protocal23:01
arrrghhhubuntu_, rdesktop assumes you have X installed23:01
arrrghhhalso, i believe rdesktop is RDP only.23:02
arrrghhh(no vnc)23:02
ubuntu_yes , true but it seems like initially to connect it is all console based (unless of course you uses a GUI program on top of it which they have) . Is my understanding correct23:03
rbasakconnection setup is command line.23:03
arrrghhhubuntu_, i guess... you can run rdesktop from a link like anything else.23:03
rbasakTry vinagre for a GUI front-end23:04
arrrghhhbut this is ubuntu-server.  what do you need rdesktop for on the server platform?23:04
ubuntu_so then really the only difference between rdesktop on linux and microsofts mstsc.exe is that one is on linux and one is for windows for the most part23:04
rbasakBut yeah, offtopic. Try #ubuntu for desktop help23:04
arrrghhhubuntu_, there's a LOT of other differences under the hood.23:05
arrrghhhbut if you want to just look at it on the surface, then yes...23:05
ubuntu_Ok , just need to know if that is correct. And is VNC the linux remote desktop protocal23:05
arrrghhhsorta23:05
arrrghhhi wouldn't say the de-facto protocol23:05
arrrghhhthere's also freenx23:05
arrrghhhprobably others.23:05
ubuntu_well you would have to uses VNC session for a anything OS to linux correct or can you run a remote desktop services on linux that is exactly like microsofts protocal or is VNC it23:07
arrrghhhubuntu_, i don't see what this has to do with #ubuntu-server.23:08
ubuntu_Basically it does since I am wondering if from a microsoft box I can remote desktop into a linux box using mstsc.exe or must you download and uses VNC based software. That seems relevent to me23:09
arrrghhhubuntu_, but ubuntu-server has no X windows23:09
rbasakYou can't remote desktop into an Ubuntu server.23:09
arrrghhhso RDP/VNC/etc has no business being discussed.23:09
rbasakSince Ubuntu server does not have a desktop.23:09
arrrghhhSSH, that is what would pertain to ubuntu-server for remote access.23:10
ubuntu_sure ubuntu has x11 installed / xwindows since if it didn't you wouldn't have a graphical user interfaces23:10
arrrghhhubuntu_, that's ubuntu-desktop.  please /join #ubuntu if you are using it.23:10
arrrghhhwe are using ubuntu-server, which has no x11/xwindows installed.23:11
arrrghhhso yes, we have no graphical user interface on our servers.23:11
ubuntu_ok, fine assume it is one the machine then for the shake of this question23:12
ubuntu_one = on23:12
arrrghhhubuntu_, but this is #ubuntu-server.  the assumption here is there is no x11/xwindows.23:12
rbasakIf your question involves having the X Window System installed, then you'll find more people to help you in #ubuntu rather than here23:12
