ripps_cr48Okay, my computer is really screwed, I'm unable to resolve any dns. I can only use the interet if I know the ip address, otherwise I'm stuck. I've tried killing and disabling dnsmasq, but I still can't get internet to work.03:42
ripps_cr48I've already tried commenting out dns=dnsmasq in NetworkManager.conf, and then restarting network-manager. But, it still doesn't work. At this point, I can't even update my computer. Is there a bad package that caused this? It was working before I updated my computer and restarted.03:48
zoraelCan anyone confirm that the proprietary nvidia driver still doesn't work well/at all with quantal xorg?08:34

Varikonniemiwhen will the 12.10 daily build alternative installs be available?12:43

BluesKajHi all12:57
philinuxBluesKaj: Hiya, have you tried to run libreoffice at all?13:01
BluesKajphilinux, yes i tried a couple of small tests on it, seemed fine , but that's no guarantee all be well with your setup.13:03
BluesKajphilinux, I've heard very few negatives about LO though.13:05
philinuxBluesKaj: clean install but fails to run.13:06
philinuxerrors from terminal too13:08
BluesKajphilinux, have you tried from the command line to see what fails13:08
philinuxBluesKaj: yep same https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libreoffice/+bug/102946413:10
ubottuLaunchpad bug 1029464 in libreoffice (Ubuntu) "soffice.bin crashed with SIGABRT in __gnu_cxx::__verbose_terminate_handler()" [Medium,Confirmed]13:10
philinuxI've added my terminal errors to the bug13:10
BluesKajphilinux, which desktop ?13:14
philinuxBluesKaj: unity 64 bit13:14
BluesKajphilinux, looks like a system call is failing , something Iknow very little about13:19
philinuxBluesKaj: so yours works. Was it an upgrade or clean install13:20
BluesKajyes philinux , but i run kde , so my setup is obviously different13:21
philinuxAh ok. Sit back and wait for a fix then13:22
BluesKajphilinux, have you upgraded lately ?13:22
philinuxBluesKaj: Every day lol13:22
BluesKajok :)13:23
philinuxSometimes twice a day ;)13:23

dupondjeWhich filesystems can you make on raw disks (without partitions)?18:31
penguin42most I think18:36
dupondjepenguin42: you know if there is some documentation on this ?18:38
dupondjeits really partitionless right? Its not that the partition or something is hidden right? :)18:39
genii-aroundYou can just do like mkfs.whatever /dev/sda  for instance18:39
dupondjegenii-around: I know that works for XFS, but does not for extX I tought?18:40
genii-aroundWell, I wouldn't do it there on sda since the MBR will be overwritten. But others, sure18:40
genii-arounddupondje: We have several hd here formatted this way in ext3, also we reduce superuser-reserved space to almost nothing18:41
dupondjegenii-around: oh ok :) you know if there is some documentation on the internal working of it ?18:42
dupondjei'm right that there is no single partition involved in it? (even not a hidden one or so ...)18:42
penguin42dupondje: Yeh it works on ext just fine - I'm not sure the installer would let you do it through the GUI etc though18:43
penguin42dupondje: and don't try and boot off that drive18:43
genii-arounddupondje: I'm not aware of any documentation on the subject... however, empirically I know this works.18:44
penguin42dupondje: The rule as far as I know is that a filesystem must be on a block device; raw disks are block devices, so are partitions18:46
penguin42...or a loop back that although it's a file pretends to be a block device18:46
genii-aroundSince the automounter tries to deduce what fs to try from partition type, this doesn't work. But if you just specify in fstab the entire drive like sdb and fs there, it mounts fine. You can also fsck it like normal18:46
dupondjeok thanks for the information :)18:50
penguin42dupondje: Now, why do you want to do it?18:52
dupondjepenguin42: Take a virtual server, a 50GB disk, with 1 partition mounted18:54
dupondjenow you want to resize it to 100GB18:54
dupondjewith a partition, you need to resize the partition, and yep ... REBOOT18:54
dupondjewithout a partition, you can resize, resize the filesystem18:55
dupondjeand indeed, NO reboot :)18:55
penguin42dupondje: Ah right18:55
penguin42dupondje: You can use lvm on the disk18:55
dupondjebut if you pvcreate  on a partition, you have same issue ... :)18:56
penguin42right, but you can pvcreate on the raw disk18:56
penguin42dupondje: I think there was some work to try and allow resize of a partition while active - I don't know how far it got18:56
penguin42dupondje: Also, out of interest, which VM system are you using and does it just detect the grown disk transparently?18:57
dupondjepenguin42: on raw disk indeed, but thats partitionless also :) so see my original question18:57
penguin42dupondje: lvm on raw disk is less unusual than filesystem on raw disk18:57
dupondjeESXi, doesn't detect change automaticly, but you can force a rescan trough /sys/class/scsi_device/device/rescan :)18:58
penguin42nod18:58
dupondjethen pvresize on the disk, and its ALL RIGHT :)18:58

genii-aroundIs there any word on when/if the nvidia driver will work soon with xorg again?20:32
bekksgenii-around: It works, here.20:33
trismbekks: *starts firefox, crashes xorg* not quite20:35
genii-aroundbekks: As late as yesterday I was still getting booted back to lightdm every time. Had to switch to the nouveau which has a lot of tearing here on fullscreen playback, etc. I did see there was an xorg update today though, perhaps I'll try again20:35
genii-aroundtrism: In my case with Kubuntu, as soon as plasma-desktop finishes loading... boom back to the dm20:36
genii-aroundNo chance to fire up anything, let alone firefox....20:36
trismgenii-around: yeah same here if I try to start unity, this is from the (no effects) gnome-panel session20:37
genii-aroundHm. Guess I'll stay with the nouveau for now until it's sorted then.20:38
trismgenii-around: keeping an eye on new nvidia releases but haven't seen anything yet20:38

ianliuAfter upgrading, I cant login anymore. Lightdm do appear, but after I type in my pass, it returns to lightdm. The same happens if I start gdm from a TTY20:52
penguin42ianliu: Will it let you choose Ubuntu2d and log in?20:53
ianliupenguin42: no, there is no Ubuntu 2d anymore20:53
genii-aroundianliu: Are you using nvidia ?20:54
ianliugenii-around: yes, I have NVIDIA20:54
=== jibel_ is now known as jibel
genii-aroundianliu: If you are running the proprietary driver I would suggest to revert to nouveau for the time being... there is currently a problem with nvidia-current and xorg20:55
ianliugenii-around: I see. Do you know how I do this with the command line?20:56
ianliuI'm actually stuck in a TTY as I can't login20:57
genii-aroundianliu: sudo apt-get remove nvidia-current    . Then as well, if you have something like nomodeset in your grub setup, to remove that from /etc/default/grub  and do sudo update-grub20:58
genii-aroundianliu: If you have also an xorg.conf in /etc/X11  to rename it for the time being also20:58
penguin42ianliu: I'm not sure of the syntax but you should be able to do it with jockey-text if you installed it via additional-drivers21:01
BluesKajgenii-around, yeah the nouveau driver is doing the job here ok21:01
ianliugenii-around: I've uninstalled all nvidia packages in my machine, I will reboot. thanks!21:02
