dsanhi, may somebody be so kind and let me know why my sound does a clicking noise after a while? maybe the sounddriver?01:36
tycheIs it USB speakers?01:37
emwhen is the last time anyone answered a question in here01:50
DeadTOmI try. I'm not the most knowledgeable.01:58
DeadTOmYesterday for me lol.01:58
emDeadTOm: you're good.02:01
emDeadTOm: I would also like to help but usually no one asks questions about things I know.02:01
emDeadTOm: seems like people who have trouble usually have problems about very specialised things.02:02
almigilol yeah02:02
emim not any kind of expert with Linux, much less Kubuntu. Ive only used Kubuntu for four months or so.02:02
emBut I am maybe an apprehensive intermediate with linux in general.02:03
emStill, most people who have problems ask about the most obscure things.02:03
DeadTOmI'm not good with drivers or anything like that. I can find my way around kde though.02:03
DarthFrogGuys, it doesn't matter.  If you can help, help. :-)  the more your help, the better you'll get yourselves.  Solving problems is an excellent way to learn.02:33
DeadTOmI've managed to help a few people.02:43
emso i guess that kalarm cannot play a .flac ?02:46
emis that correct?02:46
David__hello there! Im the new here03:43
David__Is anybody there03:44
epsilonorion_I have Wicd setup on my installation and it will connect to my network.  I am able to get online and download updates, however my internet connection (not network) is lost when I attempt to download items (such as update).  This only happens with my home network04:28
epsilonorion_though I know it is not my home network since I have another ubuntu system with no issues on the network04:29
epsilonorion_any ideas04:29
DeadTOmIs it just your PC that loses the connection or does the whole network lose internet connectivity?04:29
epsilonorion_just the first pc04:35
epsilonorion_my other computer (the one I am typing on now) is just fine04:35
DeadTOmUsing wicd on that one as well?04:35
epsilonorion_DeadTOm: yes04:35
epsilonorion_and like I said, If I am using a different network, I dont seem to have an issue.04:36
DeadTOmNow that is odd04:36
DeadTOmI haven't played with wicd in a long time.04:36
DeadTOmNot sure it's that though.04:37
DeadTOmDo you have to reconnect manually or does it come back up on it's own?04:38
epsilonorion_I have to disconnect and reconnect04:38
DeadTOmOk so it claims you're still connected but you can't get out at all?04:39
shadeslayerepsilonorion_: make sure your driver didn't crash :P04:39
shadeslayerbecause for me the b43 driver crashes at times04:40
shadeslayerand it appears that I'm connected while I'm actually not04:40
epsilonorion_I tried checking that and it seemed to be fine.  I do not think that simply disconnecting and reconnecting via Wicd restarts the driver04:40
epsilonorion_DeadTOm: correct04:41
shadeslayerepsilonorion_: not sure about WICD, but NM does that here04:41
DeadTOmWhat kind of ping tests have you done? When it's down, ping an IP and ping a FQDN like google.com. Do both fail?04:41
shadeslayerthe other thing that comes to mind is DNS resolution04:41
epsilonorion_It shows me still connected, but no connection to the outside04:41
epsilonorion_ping to google fails04:42
shadeslayerwhat about a ping to a IP?04:42
epsilonorion_internal network is fine, but generic ip externally, no04:42
epsilonorion_shadeslayer: how would you suggest to check the driver just in case04:42
shadeslayerepsilonorion_: usually dmesg shows a backtrace04:43
epsilonorion_yeah, checked that already04:43
epsilonorion_no dice04:43
shadeslayerI'm running out of ideas now :P04:43
shadeslayerinteresting that pinging a external ip doesn't work04:43
shadeslayertried to run a traceroute?04:43
DeadTOmWell I was thinking it might just be DNS crapping out but it's definitely losing connectivity altogether.04:44
epsilonorion_shadeslayer: I did not try traceroute actually, but just did and nothing unusual04:46
epsilonorion_DeadTOm: that it is, which is why I am slightly confused04:47
shadeslayerso .. it can reach the IP via traceroute?04:47
epsilonorion_lol, just as I say that it craps out04:47
shadeslayerif so, we have entered the domain of lolwot04:47
shadeslayerah ok04:47
epsilonorion_nope, just started getting no replies04:47
shadeslayerepsilonorion_: define craps out :P04:47
epsilonorion_shadeslayer: lol, sorry.  Simply ##: no reply04:48
shadeslayerpreferably pastebin04:48
epsilonorion_shadeslayer: I am actually unable to do a pastebin since the system in question is running server.  I was originally testing TracePath, but switched to TraceRoute.  When working with google.com I get *** at 12, and 13 finishes it out04:53
epsilonorion_sorry I can't do better04:53
shadeslayeryeah, that's fine04:53
shadeslayerthat's not crapping out04:53
shadeslayer*** means it couldn't resolve the address04:53
epsilonorion_yeah, thought it was, but just seemed traceroute was04:53
shadeslayermost likely because it's in the Private IP space04:53
epsilonorion_sorry, tracepath04:53
epsilonorion_so back up a creak again04:54
DeadTOmAny chance of an IP conflict? You can get some really whacky behaviour from those.04:54
epsilonorion_checked and reset all ips just to be sure04:55
shadeslayersounds really weird, traceroute works, pinging a internal ip works, pinging a external ip doesn't work04:55
shadeslayerI most certainly can't come up with a explanation for this :P04:55
susundberghuh, if pinging internal ip works -> driver works, pinging external ip does not work -> firewall04:58
susundbergand the firewall/nat/whatever there is connecting the lan to internet lets name queries through, thats why traceroute works or similar?04:59
susundbergdoes other machine in the end of same cable work perfectly?05:00
epsilonorion_well something new that might be useful.  It now seems (or maybe all along and I just missed it) that I can't ping inside my network.05:00
DeadTOmYa, that is weird.05:00
DeadTOmI'm stumped.05:00
epsilonorion_after doing a clean on dmesg, I did notice a huge amount of frequency checks when connecting to the network05:00
epsilonorion_sorry about not being able to pastebin, but I get messages cfg80211 followed by information regarding frequencies.  It seems to be normal searching on wicds part05:01
susundberg(oh and btw, traceroute and ping uses same protocol, so i guess if another goes through then should the other, if the case would be firewall/similar)05:01
epsilonorion_after this, no error or backtraces when the network falls through05:01
epsilonorion_susundberg: makes since, they both are ICMP05:02
susundbergif you are using wireless, first check that connection to your wifi box works fine? if not, suspect driver/ setup ?05:02
susundbergif suspect driver/box, try with another os ?05:03
epsilonorion_box is fine, this laptop (second one being used at moment) is fine05:03
susundbergso only thing that can be faulty is driver?05:04
susundbergi mean the box works with another machine, the machine you are trying to use works with another os (with the same box?!) ?05:05
epsilonorion_ok, on a continued note.  After I do a dmesg -C and recreate the issue, I get a new string of messages.  This time, the same cfg80211 message looking for frequencies, but repeated.  It then ends with a ADDRCONF(NETDEV_CHANGE): wlan0: link becomes ready05:05
epsilonorion_susundberg: I am just saying that the router itself is not the issue05:05
epsilonorion_I am not convinced that the drivers on the computer is fine05:06
susundbergyeah, i also do belive that05:06
susundbergi have seen wireless drivers that work, at some level, but loose connection in every say 120s05:07
susundbergthough wireless is pain in the ass as there are so many moving parts, and not all wlan boxes are that good either ..05:08
epsilonorion_susundberg: I thought it may be the case, but the wireless works with a different router05:08
susundbergtry pinging the wlan box and see if the ping goes through nicly for several minutes?05:09
epsilonorion_it seems to be this computer with my home router.  It works just fine with a 3G router05:09
epsilonorion_it does05:09
susundbergif the connection to wlan box works nicely and reliably then its not your drivers but something else05:09
susundberglike if you have two same IP on the network?05:09
epsilonorion_thought that too.  Only two computers on network at this moment.  This one and the one in question, both with different ips05:10
susundbergoh somebody else suggested it too05:10
susundbergand the box _is tested_ to handle two computers properly?05:11
killownplease, any kubuntu user here could test something for me? if yes, then press right and left button at same time on the desktop and see if it shows the menu from desktop, I am having a issue with this, kubuntu in some way uses emulate3buttons even if xorg.conf tells to not use it05:11
killownsorry I mean right and left button of the mouse05:11
epsilonorion_definitely05:11
epsilonorion_susundberg: shadeslayer: thanks for the help.  I think I am just going to call it tonight and try again tomorrow.  tired of looking at it05:13
susundbergthen i dont know. the fact that ping works to box sounds to me like wlan connection and driver works fine. the fact that connection outside the box dont work properly, definitely sounds like router/box/lan/nat/firewall problem.05:13
susundbergepsilonorion_: np, good luck with your battle :)05:14
epsilonorion_thanks05:14
shadeslayerthe frequencies he mentioned are just WLAN regulatory domains that are being updated afaik05:15
shadeslayershouldn't affect the performance, I have them in dmesg as well05:15
killownhuh no one wants help me05:15

shadeslayeryes05:17
killownman it's driving me crazy05:17
killowndoesnt work here05:17
killownif I press both at the same time it reproduces the middle button function05:18
susundbergdoes your mouse have middle button?05:19
killownsusundberg, yes05:20
susundberghmm, my middle button seems to do nothing ...05:20
killownsusundberg, sure he does05:20
killownopen the terminal and select some word05:21
killownthen try use middle button again05:21
killownit will paste05:21
susundbergoh nice, copy&paste05:21
susundbergwhat should pressing left and right then do ?:)05:21
killownshould show the menu from right button05:22
killownsince left button on the desktop would do nothing05:22
killownbut for now it's reproducing middle button05:22
killownthis is a function called emulate3buttons05:22
killownbut this is disabled on the xorg.conf05:23
killownand gnome does not emulate 3 buttons05:23

BluesKajHi all11:15
KovicaHi11:17
BoomerBilewhat package is su in?11:54
BluesKajBoomerBile, su is not a package , it's root permission11:57
BoomerBileBluesKaj, it's a program used to get root permissions, i know... but it comes in a package11:58
BoomerBileprobably coreutils11:58
phiscribetechnicaly, there isnt a root user in kubuntu like ubuntu, thus sudo12:00
BoomerBilenope, actually it's login12:00
BluesKajBoomerBile, I see there are some gui applications in synaptic for su12:00
BoomerBilephiscribe, um... technically there is a root user or you wouldn't be able to use anything as root... the root account is disabled by default but you can enable it with sudo passwd root12:00
BluesKaj!su12:01
ubottusudo is a command to run command-line programs with superuser privileges ("root") (also see !cli). Look at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RootSudo for more information. For graphical applications see !gksu (GNOME, Xfce), or !kdesudo (KDE). If you're unable to execute commands with sudo see: http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/fixsudo12:01
BoomerBilethe account root physically exists in ubuntu, it just has no password so you can't log in... if there was no root account in ubuntu sudo wouldn't work either12:02
phiscribewell i guess it means what you mean by "technical" its not enabled so...12:02
BoomerBilei use it all the time... i broke su on my android install of ubuntu... but i found out it's in package login12:03
BoomerBilefirst thing i always do in ubuntu, enable root...12:03
BoomerBilei just don't know ubuntu's package names well, i use gentoo normally12:04
BluesKajfrankly the su sudo levels in debian were confusing to me when i first tried linux seriously ..the implementataion in ubuntu is more understandable  from the pov of an old windows guy12:04

BoomerBilelooking to cover android, iphone, etc12:10
BoomerBilethat and i hate using android os... so now i can use all my favorite window managers on my android12:13

genii-aroundSIR_Taco: I have the same concern. According to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers-updates/+bug/1019079 there is a fix released but I have not seen it yet. Probably keep checking in at #ubuntu+1 for news.18:03

dthackerI'm scanning for wireless connections on my Kubuntu 12.04 install on   my laptop, but I'm not finding my WAP.   How can I verify that Kubuntu is seeing my wireless interface on the laptop?20:31
SIR_Tacodthacker: you mean if your wireless card driver is loaded? or that it can see/find your access point?20:33
dthackerI'd like to see if the driver is loaded.20:33
SIR_Tacodthacker: if you open konsole and type: iwconfig     does it list wlan0 ? or wlanX (where X is a number)20:34
dthackerwlan020:36
SIR_Tacodthacker: ok, what about: iwlist scanning20:36
SIR_Tacodon't paste it here... just let me know if it shows your access point20:37
dthackerSIR_Taco: wlan0  Failed to read scan data  Network is down20:37
SIR_Tacodthacker: ok, any idea what your network card is?20:37
dthackerSIR_Taco: No, the laptop is a Dell D63020:39
dthackerSIR_Taco: Here we are.  Broadcom 802.11b/g20:40
dthackerSIR_Taco: BCM431220:40

dthackerSIR_Taco: ok i wll, thanks20:46
SIR_Tacojust try the top answer from that... the packages are in the repos and should be easy to try20:46
epsilonorion_when using wicd and setting a static ip address, what should i said up the DNS  domain, search, and server1,2,3 values to20:48
epsilonorion_beyond wicd, anyone who has setup a static ip, what do you use for dns.  I have tried 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 with no luck20:53
SIR_Tacoepsilonorion_: you have to set that up on your router as well. What does your router tell you to put for the dns?20:55
epsilonorion_68.105.28.1120:59
epsilonorion_I guess should try that20:59
SIR_Tacoyes20:59
epsilonorion_yeah, being stupid there.  What should I setup for DNS DOmain and search domain21:01
SIR_Tacoshouldn't need to set those, I wouldn't think21:01
epsilonorion_hmm, i set the dns from the router at the DNS Server 1,2,3, locations, but no joy21:02
dthackerSIR_Taco: I've loaded the drivers.  I'm looking for the equivalent of the Ubuntu Hardware/Additional drivers icon to activate them.  Where would that be in system center?21:02
dthackerSystem Settings that is21:02
SIR_Tacodthacker: you shouldn't need to. All you should need to do is: sudo apt-get remove bcmwl-kernel-source && sudo apt-get install b43-fwcutter firmware-b43-lpphy-installer21:04
SIR_Tacodthacker: when you reboot, the proper driver should be loaded21:05
dthackerSIR_Taco: the wifi light is on, that's encouraging.... :)21:06
SIR_Tacodthacker: good haha21:06
dthackerSIR_Taco: and there is my WAP.  Thank you very much for your help!21:06
SIR_Tacoepsilonorion_: which router do you have?21:06
SIR_Tacodthacker: no problem, glad I could help (not bad for 4 beers in :P )21:06
dthackerhehe21:07
epsilonorion_netgear, I see where to change it to use the dns, but do not want to lose the ability to get on with Cox21:07
SIR_Tacoepsilonorion_: but you also have to tell the router that you want a certain computer to use a static IP21:07
epsilonorion_have already done that21:08

markithi, is there a package that extends the available plasmoids? I.e. I miss a feed reader that can be embedded in the desktop (widget)21:51
SIR_Tacomonkeyjuice:  I had an old 5xxx atheros card... needed Madwifi, not the ath5x driver... probably the problem21:52
SIR_Tacomarkit: right click on the desktop, select 'unlock widgets' (if they're locked), right click again on the desktop and select 'add widgets', when the bar comes up, there should be a button that says 'get new widgets'21:54
kubprepI want to authenticate my PC with my Linksys wireless router but I don't know the password that I setup under Windows. Right now, I have a wired connection to the router (which is how I'm accessing the net right now). Is there a way to transmit the password through the wired connection in Kubunut? So that the wireless connection will work one I disconnect the wire.21:56
monkeyjuiceyou can reset the router to default21:57
SIR_Tacokubprep: do you remember the password for loging into your router? (not the wireless password)21:57
epsilonorion___SIR_Taco: thanks for the help, git it working21:58
SIR_Tacoepsilonorion___: good to hear, glad I could help21:59
kubprepno, I don't remember either password. I don't ever remember there was that other password.21:59
markitSIR_Taco: yep, but the list seems not have a feed reader, for instance, and not beeing a kde package but somethign got from some other source21:59
SIR_Tacomarkit: an RSS feed?21:59
SIR_Tacokubprep: then follow monkeyjuice's advice, you're going to have to hard-reset the router and set it up again21:59
markitSIR_Taco: I've seen a video about a feed about kde project news for instance22:00
kubprepthanks monkeyjuice and SIR_TACO22:00
markitI'm creating a tutorial about kde (in italian) and to show the "newspaper" desktop view I would love to have one to add22:00
SIR_Tacomarkit: do you have a widget called "RSS Now"? (not sure what it'd be in Italian22:01
markitSIR_Taco: nothing with "rss" in its name, sigh. I'm using kubuntu 12.04 just installed (no other packages added)22:02
markitSIR_Taco: ops, is there!22:03
markitI searched for "feed", not "rss", thaks a lot!22:03
SIR_Tacomarkit: that's what you need for news feeds/updates22:03
beyondcr1Any way to add kde 4.9 without pulling in anything that will make the system unstable22:05
SIR_Tacobeyondcr1: you can add backports: http://www.kubuntu.org/news/kde-sc-4.922:07
markitSIR_Taco: I'm not used to rss feeds, I've never used so far. If you do use RSSNOW, how is that that kde news are displayed in a circular way, I can't click and have the "last 10" listed for instance22:07
SIR_Tacobeyondcr1: can't say it will be 100% stable though... but it should be22:08
SIR_Tacomarkit: http://kubuntu.org/kubuntu.rss is the feed for kubuntu.org (Might want to check the options, you can change the 'switching' time)... it's not the best rss feed reader ever... maybe I should make a new one lol22:13
beyondcr1Will this pull latest kernel? Becuse last time i did somthing like this a few months ago somthing went wrong if i add the back ports will this update kde everytime a dev release it out?22:13
SIR_Tacobeyondcr1: it may very well update the kernel, yes, I don't know off hand22:16
SIR_Tacobeyondcr1: it will update packages that are from the proposed 12.10, that have been backported to 12.04... whether or not they are safe to install/use depends I guess22:18
markitSIR_Taco: ok, thanks a lot :)22:19
SIR_Tacomarkit: you're welcome22:19
beyondcr1Ok thanks!22:19
SIR_Tacobeyondcr1: no problem22:20

epsilonorion_is wicd able to connect to a 3G modem, or do I need to use something else?  From online it looks like it is not completely able to22:21
SIR_Tacoepsilonorion_: a usb modem?22:21
epsilonorion_SIR_Taco: yes, 3g usb modem.  Different situation then what we discussed earlier22:21
epsilonorion_I have confirmed it to work with network-manger, but was going to try with wicd on this setup22:22
SIR_TacoI have no experience with usb modems.... unfortunately, but I'll give it a shot22:22
SIR_Tacoso it works with network manager but not wicd?22:23
epsilonorion_from the looks of it, wicd does not support 3g modems22:24
epsilonorion_3g usb modems22:24
epsilonorion_but yes, it worked just fine with network manager22:24
monkeyjuicemost the forums ive read are saying no epsilonorion_22:27
epsilonorion_thats what I have seen too22:28
epsilonorion_was just curious if anyone has had any other luck22:28

SIR_Tacomarkit: that is from 2010... I believe it has been replaced with the widget 'quick launch'22:44
markitlet me see, thanks for the tip22:45
SIR_Tacomarkit: it gives you icons on your taskbar like you would have in windows 7 'pinning to taskbar'22:45
markitah, I've tested it thanks22:46
markitis not a widget, but a feature of the taskbar22:46
markitmmmm I want to explain how to remove the bad habbit by M$people of the cluttered desktop22:46

markitSIR_Taco: it's a way, sure22:50
SIR_Tacomarkit: you want something like the old 'drawers'.... don't know of anything like that than what I've suggested.... maybe someone knows a widget for it?22:53
markitSIR_Taco: sorry to bug you, but in this video I see a "news" plasmoid that has the list of "news" I would like to use to show the Newspaper desktop view, any idea? http://youtu.be/8IiSTBTDBas23:07
markitit appears after 2-3 seconds of the video23:07
markitthere is also a "openDesktop" widget on it's right23:07

clarion_adminI'm using this as a public computer23:13
SIR_Tacomarkit: it seems there's a widget named "news" which should do what you want... not sure how I missed that one haha23:14
markitSIR_Taco: ehm, probably I'm blind... yep, now that you confirm me that exists, I've found myself with the italian translation23:15
markitof "news" (notizie)23:16
