Jak_AtackkaOkay, apparently I can fix the missing device.map problem with the command grub-mkdevicemap, but every time I try to run it the command isn't found00:08

sahkohi, is kate still the default text editor in kubuntu?01:01
SIR_TacoJak_Atackka: Are you sure you have Grub2 installed? 'sudo apt-get install grub2'01:02
SIR_Tacosahko: yes01:02
sahkois there any reason its not kwrite?01:02
Jak_AtackkaSIR_Taco: Yep.01:03
SIR_Tacosahko: because kwrite can apply formatting... which for regular text files (like configuration files, code files, etc.) doesn't work01:04
sahkoim not sure what you mean. kwrite uses katepart01:05
sahkokubuntu doesnt primarily target coders does it?01:06
SIR_Tacosahko: when you say text editor... do you mean word processor?01:07
sahkono i mean a notepad replacement for my mom. not a notepad++ replacement for her01:08
SIR_TacoJak_Atackka: what about: 'grub --version' ?01:09
Jak_Atackkacommand not found01:09
sahkoSIR_Taco: kate is part of the sdk module for a reason. its for programmers, kwrite is in base for a reason. its for everyone01:10
Jak_AtackkaHowever, when I install it, it says that it's downloading grub-efi-x86_64-2.00-101:10
TrentHello, i'm having difficulties. I'm trying to make Kubuntu run faster, and I installed a package called "kde-low-fat-settings" but i'm not sure it's working.01:11
SIR_Tacosahko: Kate is a basic 'notepad' like program with highlighting for some programming languages/usages... Kwrite is more along the lines of being a replacement for MS Word01:11
TrentAlso which is the best session to use? Xubuntu or Xfce?01:11
SIR_TacoJak_Atackka: that's hopeful01:12
sahkoSIR_Taco: ms word = calligra words. are you kidding me?01:12

sahkoSIR_Taco: its not. thats my point01:14
sahkoits too advanced and when you first start it it looks weird to people01:14
TrentAnyone help?01:15
SIR_Tacosahko: you can turn off most of the advanced stuff01:15
Jak_AtackkaI've been trying to install Arch Linux for 6 days, and not once have I been able to boot it. I'm giving up and trying a different Linux distro01:16
SIR_TacoTrent: I've never heard of that package... if you want a light weight desktop, you can remove kubuntu-desktop and install lubuntu-desktop from the command line01:16
SIR_Tacoor xubuntu-desktop01:16
TrentSIR_Taco, I have xubuntu-desktop.01:17
TrentI believe I do, when I go to login I have "xfce session or kubuntu session"01:17
SIR_TacoTrent: then what are you trying to accomplish exactly?01:17
TrentI'm following this guide here.01:18
Trenthttp://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=188903401:18
TrentI can't find the System Settings/Application Apperance01:18

SIR_Tacoanother happy customer I suppose01:20
TrentSIR_Taco, it appears my version of Kubuntu doesn't have KDE installed?01:21
TrentI went into the package manager and typed in "kde-desktop" and it didn't find anything.01:21
SIR_TacoTrent: that's why you can't follow that thread... it's for KDE01:21
TrentWhy doesn't Kubuntu come with KDE installed O______O01:22
SIR_TacoTrent: kubuntu-desktop is the package01:22
TrentOh! :P01:22
SIR_Tacoonly remove it if you don't wish to use KDE01:22
TrentSIR_Taco, I want to be able to use that tutorial. So I need to install the package "kde-plasma-desktop"?01:24
SIR_TacoTrent: likely before you login you can select either Xfce or KDE01:24
TrentSIR_Taco, whenever I login I have the option of Xubuntu or Xfce not KDE01:25
SIR_Tacoif you haven't removed KDE from your Kubuntu install01:25
TrentI don't believe I have =\01:25
TrentI have so much trouble with Linux I swear X(01:25
SIR_Tacohaha01:26
SIR_TacoTrent: what are you trying to accomplish though?01:26
TrentMake my crappy laptop faster :P01:27
TrentAnd it sppears KDE desktop resembles Windows a bit more so it'd make it more user friendly for me.01:27
killerhi....how do i reduce memory consumption in kde .......i have disabled desktop effects but still by default kde uses 550 MB of ram01:27
Trentkiller, http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=188903401:28
TrentTry that?01:28
SIR_TacoTrent: give me a minute to run through the thread you provided and I'll let you know what will apply to your current install01:29
TrentSIR_Taco, i'm going to install the KDE-plasma-desktop and try that :)01:29
SIR_TacoTrent: it's going to be worse than what you have on your 'old' laptop I would guess01:30
TrentEven after I "tweak" it?01:30
TrentUsing that tutorial ofc.01:30
SIR_TacoXfce is a good DE for older hardware. I doubt, tweaking the current KDE will give you better performance01:31
TrentOh :(01:32
SIR_TacoTrent: of the list, with Xfce installed... #3 is a possibility.... but it could also make your system unstable (likely not, but possibly)01:32
TrentQUICK question SIR_Taco , isn't "Kubuntu" SUPPOSE to come with KDE installed?01:32
SIR_TacoTrent: yes01:32
SIR_Tacokiller: how much ram do you have on your system?01:33
TrentSIR_Taco, any idea WHY it doesn't have KDE installed then? O_O01:33
SIR_TacoTrent: it should... do you know what you use to login? KDM?01:34

BarkingFishI've checked all my logs over with the system log viewer, xsession, dmesg / kernel messages, xorg logs, the lot, can't see anything wrong whatsoever. Could it possibly be hardware failure on my graphics device?22:48
AvihayBarkingFish: you need to supply more info. anyway, take a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_SysRq_key, you'd want Alt+PrintScreen+{s,u,b}, it will tell the kernel (if it's still alive) to sinc, unmount the drives and reboot the computer, that way your log files have a good chance of having the issue written to them before the reboot22:50
BarkingFishAvihay, that was how I rebooted - I went through REISUB to get restarted22:50
BarkingFishbut my log files show no record of anything going wrong. All I have is "Information", no warnings or errors22:51
BarkingFishIf it will help, I can link you to the picture that caused this.  Nobody else seems to have had this problem, it's up on imgur, and linked from reddit.com22:51
