lickalottis there a way to configure the oidentfile to auto choose based on the ip the connection is using?02:24
lickalottright now it shows my actual user name from my server vs my irc nick.  and when one of my users is still connected and I do a /znc jump i get a module in use error02:24

riz0nHello guys, I am setting up an Ubuntu Server 12.04, and am going by the Server Guide. I am trying to set up SASL Authentication in Dovecot, on page 237, it refers to editing a file /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf. It wants to uncomment lines auth default section, in socket listen{ }. The problem is, the dovecot.conf file does not contain the lines as the documentation includes. Can someone03:14
riz0ntell me the file that I need to edit that contains this portion of the configuration? Thanks.03:14

keesriz0n: in 12.04 the dovecot configure got spread out. look for auth.conf, maybe?04:19

lickalottgents, running into an odd issue.   I installed ubuntu to /dev/sda but added 3x 500GB drives after installation.  they showed up as sdb, sdc and sdd.  I rebooted and not /boot shows up against sdb and my mounts in fstab won't mount (likely because /dev/sdb1 is supposed to be mounted to /media/<FOLDERNAME>)  anyone know whats going on here?04:20
lickalottSO...is there anyone even in this chan or is it just for show?04:26
Super_Doglickalott:  have you messed with the boot order in your BIOS?04:29
Super_Dogthe drives you added may have re-arranged the order depending on their precedence in your hardware...04:30
lickalottno BIOS messing.  There are 3x IDE drives and 1x SATA.  2x IDE drives are cable select on EIDE 1 and the 3rd IDE drive is "slave" on EIDE 2 along with a DVD drive.04:32
lickalotti even went as far as to move the jumper to master on SDA04:32
lickalottbut why would it move /boot to sdb (which is #2 IDE on EIDE 1 and marked as cable select)?04:33
* lickalott sratches head04:33
Super_DogIDE will often take precedence hen these are added - especially to older system...04:34
Super_Doghen = when04:34
lickalottshould I place the jumpers in the proper config (i.e. master, slave, etc...) for them all?04:35
Super_DogHold on...04:35
Super_Dogwas the SATA drive the original drive you installed to?04:35
lickalottneg04:35
lickalottmaster cable slot on cable select04:36
Super_Dogsounds to me like your drives got re-assigned when you added all the drives afterwards...04:36
lickalottagree04:36
Super_Dogwhy else would your boot drive go from /sda to /sdb...?04:36
Super_DogAgain - you may have to play with your boot order in your BIOS - problem with older machines is that they may not have very granular options there...04:37
lickalotti had to rebuild the server because i was SURE that /boot was on sda.  After I rebooted (after installing the drives) i didn't check, assuming it was the same and formatted all the new drives.  POOF went my install04:37
Super_DogDid you image your hard drive?04:38
* lickalott looks down in shame04:38
Super_Dogclonezilla / dd - both will work04:38
lickalotti was in the middle of tar'ing up my ~ folder when i rebooted.  I had two ssh windows open and forgot I was tar'ing it up for a back up.04:38
Super_DogI like installing with all the drives in place - when adding storage I like to use LVM.04:39
Super_Dogdifferent strokes for different folks - sure you'll get some differences of opinion on this04:40
lickalottif this continues to pain me i may rebuild again with all in place04:40
Super_Dogis your bios crappy and doesn't allow you to play with it...?04:40
Super_Dogboot order can often be re-prioritized in a lot of modern bios settings04:40
lickalottit's an OLD machine.  I'd have to look and see if there is an update, but the bios that's on it now is limited.04:41
Super_Dogi try to never mix older IDE with SATA.  boot order can be a royal nightmare with that setup04:41
Super_Dogif you have to add drives - be careful and image everything.... but you should be able to go back to your single drive setup and boot just fine04:42
Super_Dogdon't know why that wouldn't fly for you if you are doing just a plain jane install of a debian server or what not.04:43
lickalottit got stuck on boot tonight (init 6 via putty) and when it didn't come back I had to go to the back room and check on it.  That's when i saw that it wasn't mounting properly.  I commented out my entires in fstab and rebooted and it came up fine.04:44
Super_Doggood... at least you're back to where you were...04:44
Super_Dognothing lost?04:44
lickalottnot this time, no04:45
lickalottit's just odd that it swapped drive spots04:45
Super_Dogyou have some spare add-in cards?  Sometimes those are more reliable than the mo-bo adapters on the old mobo's...04:45
Super_Dogdoes it support pci-express?04:46
lickalottno...   This was a frankenstien job.  I had some drives in my winblows server that I upgraded and decided to throw the old ones in my ubuntu server04:46
lickalottno (PICe)04:46
lickalottit's OLD... like P4 old04:46
lickalottlol04:46
lickalotti'm going to change my fstab to sda1 (mounted to /media/<FOLDERNAME> instead of sdb1.  If he's happy with /boot on sdb, he can keep it....04:50
Super_Doggood luck with that...04:50
Super_Dogalthough I have had some luck with various PCI controllers.  JMicron gets a bad wrap on WinBloze platforms but it has been successful for me on Linux server installs on old Frankenstein units...04:52
lickalotti'm too far into the rebuild now... took me 3 days to get ipv6 working properly with an HE tunnel.  worst case (for the time being is I take #2 on EIDE 2 out and operate without 500GB04:53
Super_DogYou don't need any of the Promise or JMicron raid controller cards either...  Just get a standard run of the mill PCI controller did the trick for me on an old P4 system.04:54
Super_DogThose will usually default to a later drive precedent than any of the on-board mobo controllers.04:54
lickalotti have a frys right up the street  :-D04:55
Super_Dog$10-$20 no more... I ordered some no names with the same chipset on e-bay and they worked fine...04:57
Super_Dogsome of the old P4's have a bios setting for booting add-in cards first... be careful with those04:59
lickalottSuper_Dog, there was an issue with my fstab entries.  Doesn't solve the movement of /boot from sda to sdb but I think it would be fine now if I continued (keeping sdb as my primary)05:11

Super_DogYep...07:34
drag0niushello07:34
drag0niuswhats some nice web shell?07:34
Kartagiswe are 3 people purchasing it07:35
Kartagiswe want to virtualise it so no one interferes with the other07:35
Super_DogWhat you trying to do with it...07:35
Super_DogThree virtual machines running on the server?07:36
KartagisI am being asked what OS. do I choose an OS or do I choose a rescue system?07:36
Kartagisyes, virtual machines07:36
Super_DogYou can run Ubuntu Server if you wish...07:36
Super_DogYou can use VM-Ware.  Virtual Box.  KEMU.  Others...07:36
Kartagisone guy says we need rescue system if we need to virtualise07:37
Super_DogIs this small business or big enterprise node or what?07:37
Kartagishetzner esx4, if you are interested to know07:37
Kartagis2x3tb hdd07:38
Kartagis32gb ram07:38
Kartagis8 IP addresses07:38
Super_DogRescue system - I would suggest using system cloning or imaging and redundant storage solution...07:39
Super_DogLots and lots of ways to skin the cat there....07:39
Kartagisall I need to know is if we really need rescue system to virtualise07:40
Kartagisif we do, I'm going to change the order07:40
KartagisI've already placed it07:40
Super_DogShort answer is probably "No, you don't".  But depends on what "rescue system" is being defined as.  It may be a good idea...07:41
Super_DogOne person's "rescue system" is another person's redundant storage solution with off-site backup provisions.07:42
Super_DogCan you define exactly what the "rescue system" is?07:43
Kartagismy OS options are centos, debian, ubuntu server, opensuse. what should I choose? please reply regardless of the channel07:43
KartagisSuper_Dog: if I only knew07:43
Super_Dog:-)07:43
_rubenyou already mentioned esx, that'd be your os07:44
Super_DogHate to recommend.  Of course I am running Ubuntu Server - ergo my presence on this channel.07:44
Super_DogCorrect ESX4 is essentially an OS by VMWare that will let you run your virtualized machines on it...07:44
Super_DogAll of those options are freely downloadable...07:45
Kartagis_ruben: oh, I thought esx4 was the name of the plan07:45
_rubencould be, but if that's the case, i'd assume the server would come installed with esx :)07:45
Super_DogNot a big deal.  Now if you are getting support for ubuntu - that's a different story...  There's free open source and then you can buy Ubuntu support packages from Canonical.07:45
Super_Doggoogle esx4 and you will find out more about it...07:46
Super_DogIt's VMWare server virtualization product...07:47
Super_DogPretty slick from what I hear but I don't run it myself.07:47
_rubenvmware makes pretty great products, yet the really cool stuff is rather pricey07:49
Super_Dog_ruben speaketh the truth on price07:50
_rubenbut for the simple tasks, the free stuff suffices just fine07:51
KartagisI hear about Xen. can I use that on ESX4?07:52
_rubenno07:52
Super_Doghttp://www.vmware.com/products/datacenter-virtualization/vsphere/pricing.html07:52
_rubennesting virtualization products hardly ever works07:52
_rubenxen provides virtualization, as does esx07:52
_ruben(tho one shouldn't be using esx nowaydays, but esxi instead)07:53
Super_DogYeah, that gets a bit convoluted... I would virtualize off the ESX07:53
Super_DogIsn't it called VSphere now?07:53
_rubenvSphere is the name of the whole productline07:53
_rubenwhere esxi is the name of the hypervizor07:53
Super_DogOK...  I'm rusty on the new nomenclature as I've stuck with the free open source solutions...07:54
Super_DogShould be ESX5 it looks like...  http://www.vmware.com/products/vsphere/esxi-and-esx/overview.html07:55
Super_DogI mean if you are buying new and all...07:55
Super_Dogor I should say "ESXi"07:55
_rubenESX5 doesn't exist, ESXi5 does07:56
_ruben4 was the latest with both ESX and ESXi07:56

ogra_well, grub seems to get along since he ends up in an initrd ;)10:13

_ruben/boot resides on a seperate mdadm volume formated as ext210:13
_rubenjust seems mountall can't cope with it somehow10:13
_rubencurrent workaround: add nobootwait to fstab and mount /boot to rc.local10:14
blackshirti thin you should treat your /boot not to use lvm/md10:14
ogra_sounds like a race in the initramfs scripts10:14
_rubenogra_: how would that explain mount to work, but not mountall?10:15
_ruben(which is something i discovered today)10:15
ogra_no idea, but mountall runs scripted, if you run mount manually there is a lot time passed already10:15
_rubenif i mount manually, and then invoke mountall, boot continues (but in a odd state, as mountall keeps lingering)10:15
ogra_i would think assembling md0 takes to long here10:16
ogra_or mountall is to fast trying to use it ... as you want to put it :)10:16
_rubeni wonder why md0 would take longer than md110:16
ogra_no idea, just a theory10:16
_rubencuase when i end up in the recovery shell, the lvs are all mounted already :)10:16
ogra_yeah but probably not while mountall runs10:17
_rubencurrent wild-guess is some trigger mis-firing or something, as stracing mountall shows it ending up in a select() call10:17
_rubenfriggin' plymount and all that :P10:18

maxbYou just claimed it was already attached?17:33
arrrghhhit was17:33
arrrghhhi closed the session17:34
arrrghhhrelaunched another one17:34
arrrghhhmanaged to get the samba screen re-attached17:34
arrrghhhi was comparing the configs, and the screen went all wonky.  so i hit ctrl-c17:34
arrrghhhi thought that would kill it, but it seems it's still running "somewhere"17:34
arrrghhh/var/lib/dpkg/info/samba-common.postinst seems to still be running when i lsof |grep dpkg17:35
arrrghhhmaxb, Pici ?17:38
arrrghhhshould i just reboot the server at this point?17:56
arrrghhhnot sure where to go with it...17:56

jgcampbell300can anyone here tell me where to add two dns addresses on ubuntu 12.04 with maas and mass-dhcp ... there is some dynamic resolv happening and i dont want to put it in the wrong place ... i read there is prepend domain-name-servers some where but cant find it17:57
Vampydoes any one have a guide/howto setup a MAAS server behind a DHCP enable router that still PXE boots the nodes?18:00
jgcampbell300i just found this /etc/dhcp/dhclient.conf there is a commited out like #prepend domain-name-servers 127.0.0.1; would i be safe adding prepend domain-name-servers 8.8.8.8, 127.0.0.1, x.x.x.x; ?18:00
jgcampbell300 18:00
jgcampbell300Vampy: im accualy working on that now ... with a few problems but seems to be working so far ... https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ServerTeam/MAAS/AddNodes18:01
Vampyjgcampbell300, i'm on the step behind you..18:01

jgcampbell300Vampy: mine seems to be working so far ... i just cant get my dns to stay put ... it keeps changing resolv.conf to nameserver 127.0.0.1 and i need it to go to an outside dns for things it dosnt know about18:03
jgcampbell300Vampy: do you have two nic's in your controler and a switch between controler and nodes18:03
Vampycurrently, no but a second nic and switch would be easy to get to18:04
Vampyassumin the box has room for another card.. i've looked inside for a few months now18:04
Vampyjgcampbell300, you are suggestion that i use 2 nics and a switch, would you say that bridging the nic's in the controller is best?18:06
jgcampbell300Vampy: im not totaly sure accualy ... from what i have read there are like 50 ways to set it up ... but i didnt want any of my cloud jacking with the rest of my network so i used the two nic's in my server to seperate everything18:07
jgcampbell300Vampy: im just trying to learn all i can about these systems18:08
jgcampbell300i have been haveing a heck of a time getting anyone on irc that can help me with this ... was thinking about looking for a maas channel18:09
Vampywait.. i've got a theory here.18:10
Vampyaccording to your idea.... the chain would run as such.. router to eth0 (controller) eth1 to switch switch to nodes.. eth1 runs as a independent dhcp with new ip addresses to nodes only while eth0 prevides wan access to all ..18:11
Vampyeth1 would have a custom pool of ips that differ from the router (ie 10.100.10.1-254)18:12
jgcampbell300Vampy: from what i see yes ... im not sure yet but i think there may need to be a bridge at eth 0 118:12
Vampyagreed or else the nodes would not have inet/wan access.18:13

Vampydhcpd.conf?18:15
jgcampbell300what has been driveing me nuts is figgureing out where ot pu new dns addresses since there is a dynamic resolv happening here some hwere ... every time i restart or anything with network it resets it back to local18:15
jgcampbell300i am thinking so .. im reading it right now .. and thats the best i have found for it so far ... but just not sure at this point18:16
jgcampbell300i installed maas-dhcp and thats when dynamic resolv started happening ... i think18:18
jgcampbell300and i have googled a million sites trying to figgure out the propper place ot change it18:18
