OrangestarWell, the lowest point of my day is now "You couldn't install Xubuntu because you were too impatient for the installer to start up."01:34
holsteinmaybe try the alternate iso.. might get to the installation quicker01:35
OrangestarNah, it's working now.01:35

Hobbithello?02:25
Hobbitanyone here?02:26
pleia2!hello02:26

pleia2!hi02:26
ubottuHi!, Welcome to #xubuntu! Feel free to ask questions and help people out. The channel guidelines are at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/IRC/Guidelines. Enjoy your stay!02:26
pleia2you can just ask :) if people know how to help they will reply02:26
HobbitI am trying to install xubuntu from xp desktop, but I'm having some trouble getting it to load: I downloaded the iso from here: http://xubuntu.org/getxubuntu/ and tried to open it with Daemon tools, but it just opened the iso as if it were a flash drive instead of loading the installer.02:28
pleia2Hobbit: are you trying to install it with wubi?02:29
HobbitI think so02:30
pleia2that would be installing it inside of windows02:30
HobbitI would prefer to partition the hard drive02:30
pleia2ok, then you need to either put it on a USB stick or a CD02:31
pleia2then you boot your computer from it, you don't load the installer inside of Windows02:31
Unit193May as well use LiLo to put it on a USB and boot from that (or CD)02:31
pleia2https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation explains a bunch of ways it can be installed :)02:31
Hobbitonce before I installed a partition on the hard-drive from the desktop - is that still possible?02:32
pleia2if you use wubi it creates a large file inside of windows that runs Ubuntu02:32
pleia2but no, you can't install it on a partition while windows is running02:32
Hobbitwubi is slower, right?02:33
pleia2I don't know, I've never used it02:33
Hobbitthanks pleia2, Ill read the link and check back.02:34
Unit193Wouldn't recommend wubi though.02:34
holsteineh. it worked ok for me a few times.. one time it went *realy* bad02:35
Hobbit"The desktop CD allows you to try Xubuntu without changing your computer at all, and at your option to install it permanently later." Does that use wubi? (found here: http://mirror.anl.gov/pub/ubuntu-iso/CDs-Xubuntu/12.04/release/)02:37
holsteinHobbit: you can have wubi use that iso02:38
holsteinHobbit: what do you want?02:38
Hobbitdoes the "intall it permanently later mean that it would be within windows?02:39
HobbitII would like to partition the hard-drive02:39
holsteinif you want to install xubuntu, then i say go for it.. back up your data (either way) and know how to recover the master boot record if you need02:39
holsteingrab a CD.. boot it.. follow the instuctions about installing it "beside" windows02:40
holsteinthe wubi is installed "inside" windows.. the live CD is a tool you can use to look at the ubuntu desktop and install it if you want02:40
holsteinwith a wubi, you dont boot windows to get to xubuntu.. but its sharing the windows file system somehow, and doesnt need to partition the drive02:41
Hobbitwould you try using a flash drive to install xubuntu?02:41
holsteinwitn the live CD... you can shrink the parition downand install xubuntu beside it02:41
holsteinHobbit: you can.. what do you want to do?02:41
Hobbita flash drive would be easier02:42
holsteinhttp://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/ is what i typically use02:42
unheedingyeah untebootin is key02:42
holsteinhttps://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromUSBStick runs it down pretty good02:42
unheedinghard drive didn't work for me, i needed a USB drive02:42
HobbitFor booting from a flashdrive I need the " Alternative Installation CD" right?02:55
Hobbit*not the "Live Desktop CD"02:55
pleia2you can use a regular install cd02:55
Hobbithttps://help.ubuntu.com/community/GettingUbuntu02:55

Hobbitdo I need to " verify the md5 sum or sha256 sum (hash) of the .iso file."?02:58
unheedingif you want to be sure you have an uncorrupted version02:58
unheedingyou don't have to though02:58
Hobbitwould you?02:58
unheedingi didn't when i installed xubuntu02:59
Hobbitthx, I won't either02:59
unheedingrisky business, my Hobbit friend03:00
HobbitHobbits are used to risk business03:03
unheedingman i love xfce03:04
unheedingso sleek03:04
Hobbitdoes xubuntu use xfce?03:08
unheedingxubuntu IS xfce03:08
holsteinxubuntu *is* ubuntu with XFCE03:08
Hobbitlol I love xfce too03:08
unheedingokay he said it better03:08
Hobbitubuntu is just too foreign for me03:09
holsteintoo unfamiliar?03:09
unheedingubuntu is easy.  i love apt-get03:10
HobbitI could never get the drivers for flash and stuff working in mozilla on ubuntu03:11
holsteini usually suggest trying chrome as a troubleshooting step, since the 32bit version of chrome has its own flash03:11
HobbitI tried ubuntu before chrome existed03:12
holsteinright.. its much easier and more stable (for now) to get flash03:16
HobbitI am trying to locate the desktop iso with "Universal USB Installer", which won't recognize the iso file on my desktop03:25
deadghostI'm trying to install through YUMI usb boot but keep getting initramfs unable to find medium containing a live file system05:42
deadghostis there any way to install it through windows?05:42

hermanlfanyone else getting screen tearing with the bumblebee driver?07:43
hermanlfif I use compiz there is no screen tearing.  I'd rather not use compiz.07:44
TheSheepI don't think that bulblebee is in whidespread use here07:44
TheSheepbumble*07:44
TheSheephermanlf: out of curiosity, what laptop do you have?07:44
hermanlfAlienware m14x07:45
Sysixfwm4 compositing causes tearing because xrender lacks sync to vblank07:46
hermanlfno fixes?07:46
Sysiif you definitely need compositing I can give you script you can bind to hotkey/launcher to toggle compositing on/off07:48
hermanlfscreen tearing happens with and without compositing.07:50
TheSheepI think it may be related to how bumblebee copies the screen from the nvidia card07:51
TheSheepI remember reading about them planning to do it in a more efficient way in the future07:51
hermanlfGuess I'll just go back to using compiz to get rid of the issue.07:52

xubuntu509hello, just installed Xubuntu but the login screen is set on the wrong resolution, how can I change it?11:45
Os_Maleushi together! I have a bit trouble with updating java. I have several versions located in /usr/lib/jvm/. this already makes me wonder a bit. java -version tells me, I would have the version 6b. under /usr/lib/jvm/ I can find folders with "java-1.5.0-gcj-4.6", "java-6-openjdk", "java-7-openjdk-common" and "java-7-openjdk-i386" among others.12:12
Os_MaleusI managed to download the newest release of that thing. should be the jre-7u7-linux-i586.rpm (for a 32Bit version of Xubuntu).12:16
bazhangyou never use rpm for that sort of thing12:16
bazhang!java | Os_Maleus please have a read12:18
ubottuOs_Maleus please have a read: To just use java you need a "Java Runtime Environment" (JRE) and/or a browser plugin. If that is not sufficient you will need a "Java Development Kit" (JDK) aka "Software  Development Kit" (SDK).  Please see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Java about how to install one of three current implementations.12:18
Os_MaleusI am a bit confused now. the testpage for java (http://www.java.com/en/download/testjava.jsp) keeps on telling me, that I would not have installed the latest version.12:30
Os_Maleusthe homepage of java tells me, there would be no manual updating for the developers version of java necessary, since it would be done automatically.12:31
Os_Maleusand I have here this hand full of versions on my machine, but checking the version on the terminal, it confirms that it would be an older version.12:32
holsteinOs_Maleus: i would remove the versions you have installed, and consider using the one bazhang linked from the official repositories12:33
holsteinwhen you go out on your own wih package management, sometimes it can be challenging to clean things up12:34
mixedhello i need help, i've just install xubuntu and i can't add any input methods. When i enter ibus preferences and go into 'input method' i can only add chinese methods12:41
Os_Maleusbazhang and holstein, following the link for installation, it said to 'sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/java'. performing it, it sais "There are no actual Java files in this PPA. More info: http://www.webupd8.org/2012/01/install-oracle-java-jdk-7-in-ubuntu-via.html", but there actually are files listed.13:58
holsteinOs_Maleus: what would you like to do?14:02
Os_Maleusstill installing/updating my java14:02
holsteinwhat does http://www.java.com/en/download/testjava.jsp tell you about your version?14:02
Os_Maleusis still the old one 6b24.14:03
Os_Maleusjava version "1.6.0_24"14:03
Os_MaleusOpenJDK Runtime Environment (IcedTea6 1.11.3) (6b24-1.11.3-1ubuntu0.11.10.1)14:03
Os_MaleusOpenJDK Server VM (build 20.0-b12, mixed mode)14:03
holsteinhave you installed the newer one? what do you see when you open a package manager and search java?14:03
holsteinOs_Maleus: you likely dont want "iced tea"14:03
holsteini would undo all your previous attempts and installs.. im not sure what you used to instal that .rpm.. alien?14:04
Os_Maleusto be honest, I don't remember myself anymore. could have been in the connection with the eclipse?14:05
* holstein shrugs... i would just open a package manager and seach "java"... synaptic is a nice options14:05
holsteinoption*14:05
Os_Maleussynaptics pagacge manager sais "java-common (0.42ubuntu2)" and "java-wrapper 0.1.22"14:08
holsteinwhen you14:09
holstein"reload" or run sudo apt-get update do you get errors?14:09
Os_Maleusno, not until now.14:10
Os_Maleusand it still shows the same14:10
holsteinand java -version ?14:11
holsteinstill 1.6.x14:11
Os_Maleussure.14:12
Os_Maleusno errors.14:12
holsteinOs_Maleus: you ran sudo apt-get install oracle-java7-installer ?14:12
Os_Maleuseven I have there some other versions on my system?14:12
Os_MaleusI didn't run it until now.14:13
holsteinOs_Maleus: if you'd like to try and recall how you installed them, and properly remove them, that wouldnt hurt14:13
holsteinOs_Maleus: otherwise, the next step is to try this update14:13
Os_Maleusso just installing the oracle-java-7-installer? without deinstalling the other stuff?14:14
holsteinOs_Maleus: if you dont want to or cant remember how you installed java before14:15
holsteinwhat would i do? if i were in a hurry, i would just add that ppa and install v714:18
Os_Maleusnow it shows "java version "1.7.0_07""14:18
holsteinsounds good!14:19
Os_Maleusthanks!14:20
holsteinsure... enjoy!14:20
Os_Maleusthe other is OpenJDK, what is installed here. ... will take a look, why and how. :-)14:20
Os_Maleusbut thank You both, holstein and bazhang!14:21
xubuntu549Could I upgrade from 32bit ubuntu to 64bit online, without cd/dvd or flashdrive?14:24
holsteinxubuntu549: thats not really an "upgrade"14:26
holsteinif it were me, i would just backup and reinstall14:26
xubuntu549so could I do it14:26
holsteinxubuntu549: its all open, so you can technically do anything you like14:27
holsteinthe way to do it is to backup and reinstall14:27
holsteinhttp://askubuntu.com/questions/153379/can-i-upgrade-ubuntu-12-04-from-32-bit-to-64-bit14:27
holsteinyou can save your /home or sync to ubuntuone14:28
holsteini would look at why you want to move to 64 bit, and consider just waiting til the next time you want to upgrade or reinstall14:28
xubuntu549k tnx holstein14:28
theuserHi15:19
theuserBack i the day before i got lazy, i ran a slackware box with multiple screen and one set of input devices per screen15:20
theuserCould i do the same in ubuntu without fighting the system?15:20
theuserWhere did the Xorg   config file go15:24
TheSheeptheuser: it's not needed, but if you create it, it will be respected15:29
TheSheep!xorg | theuser15:29
ubottutheuser: The X Window system is the part of your system that's responsible for graphical output. To restart X, type 'sudo /etc/init.d/lightdm' on an ubuntu system. replace with kdm on Kubuntu. To fix screen resolution or other X problems: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Config/Resolution . Also see !xorgconf15:29
TheSheep!xorgconf | theuser15:29
ubottutheuser: The /etc/X11/xorg.conf file is deprecated, but sometimes may still be needed to pass values to specific drivers. Generic xorg.conf generation: http://ubottu.com/y/xorgconf - ATI/AMD ( fglrx driver ) specific: http://ubottu.com/y/atiamd - NVidia ( nvidia driver )specific: http://ubottu.com/y/nvidia man xorg.conf for file structure and syntax.15:29
theuserSo i can set up multiple displays with separate input devices attached to each one15:31
theuserand fire up an xdm on each of them15:31
TheSheepprobably, (x)ubuntu uses a normal xorg, so if you could do that on slack, you should be able to do it here15:32
theuserim missing a bunch of stuff in the /etc folder15:32
TheSheeplike what?15:33
theuserbut i think thats just difference between ubuntu and slack15:33
TheSheeppossibly, if you tell me what you are missing, I might be able to tell you where it is15:34
theuserfor the past five years i've pretty much just been using the computer for office type stuff and not messing about in the guts of the system. So it may be about time to refresh some stuff15:35
theuserI hear slack arent quite the dependency hell anymore either15:35
theuser:-p15:35
theuserThe init files15:35
theuserthe one that fires up X the way ubuntu wants to fire up X15:35
GridCubelightdm?15:35
GridCubeO_o15:35
theuseri assume i have to mess with it to make it launch X the way i want15:36
theuserIts about time to upgrade the tech where i work so i'm kind of lobbying for a halfthin linux solution15:37
theuserlike 99% of the people can get all their work done in open source software with litle or no learning curve15:38
theuserso why not spend more money on some beefyer hardware, better yet some fullHD LEd screens15:38
TheSheeptheuser: ok, that's complicated in ubuntu. the session files are in /usr/share/Xorg/sessions15:40
TheSheeptheuser: the lightdm config is in /etc/lightdm15:40
TheSheepbut you can install gdm instead and have all the familiar stuff15:40
theuserbetter yet15:40
theusergood old xdm15:41
TheSheepI didn't know it still exists XD15:41
theuserit dont?15:45
theuserFk15:45
theuseri'll dig up some old slack cd15:46
theuserinstall slackware 715:46
TheSheepjust kidding15:46
theuserand rock out with netskape15:46
