alkisgHi, is support for xvideo on s3virge supposed to be broken in 12.04, or could it be some bad configuration? It worked fine in 10.04...09:43

alkisgInstalling xserver-xorg-video-s3virge allowed my card to have xvideo. Any reason why it's not preinstalled like it was in previous versions?11:35

jcristausomething along the lines of: because it has about 5 users, no maintainer, and so is no longer in ubuntu main11:38
tjaalton-s3virge is now gone from the archive too, starting from quantal11:38
alkisgThank you guys, so I _can_ put it in the Recommends: of my "greek-schools-installer" package (LTS only) without breaking anything12:05
alkisgWe have more than 1000 of s3virge cards here, not sure about exact numbers though12:05
tjaaltonstubborn machines ;)12:07
alkisgSo far we had 10 year old PCs in schools... now with the crisis we're going to have 20 year old PCs in the future :D12:07

seb128tjaalton, could you look at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/1032251 ?13:51
ubottuLaunchpad bug 1032251 in xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu) "EOG hangs in Ubuntu 12.04" [Undecided,New]13:51
seb128tjaalton, is that a known issue?13:51
tjaaltonseb128: 855GM, support for those older chips can be somewhat lacking, dunno if it's known elsewhere or not13:54
seb128tjaalton, ok, not something we should care too much about then? (I hate all those "eog freezes xorg" bugs, it's not cool when the image viewer can take your session down)13:56
tjaaltonseb128: well, would be nice to know if it's fixed/broken with a more recent stack13:58
seb128tjaalton, can you ask on the bug? :-)13:58

apwtjaalton, i am seeing some reports of validation failures in nouveau, suspicious its mesa passing in junk ... ring any bells ?14:22
tjaaltonapw: huh, no.. wouldn't surprise me though, we've had plenty of issues since nvidia users were forced to use nouveau on quantal, before the blob worked14:23
apwso we are not recommending nouveau on quantal14:24
tjaaltonbut I've had no time to look at those bugs in more detail. I'm preparing a newer mesa snapshot atm14:24
apwtjaalton, sounds good with luck it will fix my issues and theirs :)14:24
tjaaltonit probably has more issues on certain hw generations, my gf8600 was quite happy with it14:24
tjaaltonapw: any bug reports out there?14:26
apwbug 1045077 is the one i was asked about14:27

tjaaltonlibdrm 2.4.39 uploaded, prereq for the newer mesa snapshot..14:43
