Santiclauseor is that just a restriction for gparted00:00
tsimpsondoes the windows disk manager let you change the partition scheme on the running disk?00:00
Santiclauseassuming those words mean what I think they mean, yes00:00
Santiclauseby which I mean that I think those words mean the following: you can add/remove/change partitions00:01
tsimpsoneven the system partition?00:01
Santiclausethe system partition being the partition containing the OS/MBR/etc?00:02
tsimpsonif it does, then I'm guessing it does some voodoo and works around it00:02
Santiclauseno, it can't change that00:02
Santiclausebut that's not what I'm trying to change00:02
SanticlauseI'm trying to change some 12 gb "recovery partition"00:02
Santiclausenot the 100 mb one added by windows 7, I think this is a 3rd party oem partition00:02
Santiclausealright, gparted is downloaded, let's see if I can mount it with daemon tools and see what's what00:03
tsimpsonwell changing the partition table on a disk that's in use is generally not a good thing00:04
Santiclauseoh well :|00:04
tsimpsonthere's always wubi if you can't fiddle with the partition scheme00:04
SanticlauseI don't want to do that00:04
SanticlauseI want an honest-to-goodness install00:04
Santiclauseoh, this gparted thing is something I have to boot in to00:05
Santiclauseargh this is frustrating00:06
tsimpsonif the disk manager won't let you remove the "recovery" partition, there's not much choice until you get external bootable storage00:06
Santiclauseat this point I'm just trying to access the recovery partition to see what's in it00:06
tsimpsonthough, I will say that I have no experience with the net-boot option, so maybe there are ways around it00:06
Santiclausehmmm00:07
SanticlauseI do have an external USB hard drive00:07
datruthif I remove modem-manager will I be able to connect to the internet?00:07
Santiclausehmmmmm00:07
Santiclausecan I partition the external drive and make a bootable partition on it and boot gparted using that?00:08
tsimpsonSanticlause: you should be able to using this tool http://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal-usb-installer-easy-as-1-2-3/00:11
tsimpsonit says it supports GParted, so that should  work00:11
Santiclausealright, I set up a bootable 20 gb partition on the external, and put gparted on it00:39
Santiclausehere's hoping shit works :|00:39
Santiclauseauhgghghg01:02
Santiclausethis is getting frustrating >:|01:02
SanticlauseI took a screenshot of what gparted was showing me01:03
Santiclausehttp://i.imgur.com/b5TJv.jpg01:03
SanticlauseI mounted the first two to confirm that they were actually my C:\ and D:\ drives (they were) - so, it looks like, I dunno01:03
SanticlauseI don't fukken know01:04
Santiclausethe partition sizes are fucked up or something01:04
IdleOneSanticlause: please don't swear01:04
Santiclauseat this point I feel like just giving up and installing kubuntu on my external instead, and leaving my laptop's internal pristine and linux-free. :|01:06

monkeyjuiceneed a good walk thru on dual booting , the partitions in windows seems to be giving  people a hard time ...12:20
faLUCE++12:22
BluesKajmonkeyjuice, one thing to remember , windows always looks for /dev/sda first upon installation12:24
monkeyjuicewell its the 4 partitions that windows uses that kills the install , and its hard to partition one for linux12:25
monkeyjuicevery confusing for new users12:25
monkeyjuicei guess there are just to many options ,,12:26
BluesKajbest to create the windows partition as the first one , and make sure the rest of the disk is partitioned to ext for linux previous to the windows install12:28
monkeyjuicewell its the systems that have windows preinstalled that are the problem, they come with 4 partitions ,12:28
monkeyjuicethats why we need a good walkthru on partitioning the open partition for linux to use12:29
monkeyjuiceive not found one yet12:30

SanticlauseI really don't want to screw up my hard drive, so I think I'll just install kubuntu on to an external hard drive :|17:46
DarthFrogSanticlause: That's safest.  You can install it onto a USB thumbdrive.  Or put a second HD in your system.17:49
SanticlauseI don't think a second HD would fit in my laptop17:49
DarthFrogDon't forget to do a backup of your current system before doing the install.17:49
Santiclauseehhhh? why?17:49
SanticlauseI would be installing it to a different location17:50

DarthFrogHmm.18:15
SIR_Tacokensuaga: is it possible you set the resolution to a mode not supported by your video card and/or monitor?18:15
kensuagai think it was the AA or AF18:16
kensuagai can not get back into the game to bring it down18:16
DarthFrogkensuaga: Well, the game must have a config file.  You could try renaming that, so the game can't load it and start over.18:17
kensuagai have delete the game and even redownloaded it, but it seems like the setting never go back to defualt18:18
DarthFrogThat's cuz the same config file is present.18:18
SIR_Tacokensuaga: is there a '.coldest' or something along those lines in your home directory?18:18
DarthFrogLook for a .coldestrc or something similar.18:19
DarthFrogBTW, the "rc" at the end of a file name usually means "run control".18:19
DarthFrogIf you simply delete that file, you'll start afresh.18:20

This one :-) I evaluated mint, cinnamon, gnome3, xfce - Performance is now really good, compared to the young KDE4 days, wow and seems to beat all other desktops according to Phoronix and my personal experience.22:13
