xnoxpleia2: ok. I upload ubiquity which should unbreak the quantal daily cds. whenever those will be build & published next.00:13
xnoxs/upload/uploaded/00:13
pleia2xnox: great!00:14
pleia2no more 50 thunar windows :)00:14
xnoxpleia2: yes. Apperantly the bug was reported back in 2011, when thunar switched from udisks -> udisks200:15
xnoxpleia2: but little did ubiquity now, that the world has moved on from our ways to "freeze disks": hal, devkit-disks, udisks & setting manual options all over the place.00:16
xnoxnow we support udisks2 as well....00:16
pleia2ah00:16
xnoxpleia2: also theming should be better.00:16
pleia2xnox: the black on black?00:16
xnoxyes.00:16
* pleia2 cheers00:16
xnoxwell it was a a11y fix, cause gtk high contrast themes were broken as well.00:17
* pleia2 nods00:17
xnoxbut there are still minor problems with booting CD as well as "ubiquity only mode"00:17
xnox* on boot we get black background -> on ubuntu CDs we get plymouth logo theme00:18
xnoxit's hard to tell in kvm if it is "black off", "black grub" or "black plymouth" or "black xfce"00:18
xnoxit's certainly flicker free =)00:18
pleia2:)00:18
xnoxbut I'd preffer xubuntu logo and dont's00:18
xnoxs/dont's/dots/00:19
xnoxwhen ubiquity greeter appears (Try Xubuntu vs Install Now)00:19
xnoxubiquity actually fakes everything you see00:19
pleia2I see00:19
xnox.... and the background it fakes is the "old one" not the MasterCard & Cirrus bubbles logo as now used in Try Xubuntu00:20
xnoxand there might be other bit's and bots that are missing.00:21
pleia2well, this is good progress00:21
xnoxfor ubuntu:ubquity fakes settings, top panel and indicators from scratch00:21
xnoxyeah, these bits are minor compared with previous no-go situation.00:22
xnoxBTW the slideshow is cool. I'm now considering Xubuntu..... Not fully decided yet though :P00:22
pleia2yeah, they did a nice job on the improvements this cycle00:25
xnoxpleia2: haha =) I love how you distance yourself away from "them" =)00:27
pleia2I've been pretty busy these past couple weeks, I didn't even realize it had been done until I wrote the "we won't have a beta 1" post yesterday00:27
pleia2new background too, spiffy00:27
xnoxdid MasterCard & Cirrus pay for that new background? =))))00:30
xnoxhttp://www.easyvectors.com/assets/images/vectors/afbig/cirrus-logo.jpg00:31
xnoxhttp://temp.knome.fi/xubuntu/quantal_wall/xubuntu-quantal.png00:31
pleia2hah00:31
xnoxpleia2: bug 1043170 I commented on what needs doing00:38
ubottuLaunchpad bug 1043170 in ubiquity (Ubuntu) "Update Xubuntu wallpaper for Quantal" [Undecided,New] https://launchpad.net/bugs/104317000:38
xnoxI will not fix it for you =) I want to see merge proposal from xubuntu-folks =) I want more people involved in ubiquity inner workings, especially when it comes to flavours integration.00:38
pleia2xnox: btw, we have #xubuntu-devel too which is probably the best place for this (I just realized we weren't there, oops)00:39
xnoxpleia2: are you saying that "xubuntu" users are not all coders ? =)))))00:40
pleia2that would be a fascinating world00:40
Unit193Technically not really, could drop all users that aren't coders rather than have all 1K+ being coders.00:41

jd2ok, thanks05:15
scarecrowi dont have a windows machine to verify the md5. i dont have a hard drive thus why i am installing to usb.05:16
bazhangwhat computer are you on now05:16
scarecrowi have 8 'buntu CDs, 3 DVDs, 2 debian DVDs, 4 kubuntu USB sticks, 1 lubuntu usb stick and 1 xubuntu usb stick. i have never had an issue with them b4 now05:17
scarecrowim on a liveCD05:17
scarecrowkubuntu 12.04 llive cd05:18
scarecrownot really live, nothing special about it, just a burned ISO from the site05:19
bazhangyou are on a live cd, and somehow want to write an iso from the livecd to a usb stick from that?05:19
scarecrowthis isnt really that complicated. i just want to install linux. i am using a USB stick as sda05:20
bazhangwas that a yes?05:20
scarecrowno05:20
bazhangyou have an install currently to do this from, or from the livecd environment05:21
scarecrowi want to boot from a linux disk and install linux. simple05:22
bazhangto where05:22
scarecrowto a 16GB flash drive05:22
bazhangusing what tool? you have an iso to write to the usb stick? or want the livecd to install to it05:23
scarecrowi have 8 'buntu CDs, 3 DVDs, 2 debian DVDs, 4 kubuntu USB sticks, 1 lubuntu usb stick and 1 xubuntu usb stick. i have never had an issue with them b4 now05:23
bazhangscarecrow, thats not answering my question05:24
scarecrowwow okay05:24
bazhangrepeating that adds no new info05:24
scarecrowi dont understand why you are making this sound so difficult. to install linux you boot from either a CD, a DVD, or a usb stick, i have all three of those already made ready to go. they work i use them often.   I want to boot from any one of these (i dont care which one) and install linux. i do not have a hard drive so i wiill be installing onto a 16GB USB drive05:26
bazhanga flash stick?05:26
scarecrow16GB flash stick05:26
bazhangfrom what, using what tool05:26
scarecrowwow05:27
bazhangwhats the error you are getting, exactly05:27
scarecrowi burned the CDs using nero. i made the USB flash drives using Linux Live USB Creator (and 1 with Universal USB Creator). i will be installing onto a blank 16GB flash drive.05:28
scarecrowim not getting an error in particular. it just says "The installer has crashed"05:28
bazhangso you said. so whats the error/issue05:28
bazhangso the "burn" failed05:29
scarecrowwow05:29
bazhangthe installer crashing is an error05:29
scarecrowis there any one else? you dont seem to understand05:29
bazhangso there are two possible reasons for this: corrupt iso, or bad "burn"05:30
scarecrowi have already booted the computer with the installation source (this momemt it is a 12.04 kubuntu DVD)   the computer is booted. i start the installation processes, i get through copying files, i usually get through installing the language packs, then the installer crashes05:31
scarecrowget your head around the fact that i have A LOT of linux disks i have made over the years, this is not an MD5 issue. these disks work. these USB flash drives that have live linux distros on them work. i use them often. the ISO is not the issue. these ISOs date bake as far as Mandrake 7.1005:33
scarecrowmoving on. how do i find out what crashed beyound just the generic "Installer has crashed" error message?05:34
scarecrowkeep in mind i am already booted into a linux enviornment and i have the crash screen up right now05:35
scarecrowseriously? thats it? thats the only answer? "Oh if linux wont install it's the MD5"     BS!!!!!!05:39
scarecrowhow about this?   i have another laptop that is sucessfully running from USB (8GB) can i copy the contents then just install grub?05:41
scarecrowor does that not compute?05:41
scarecrowor did i just get lucky and it's not really possible to install and run linux from USB?05:43

apm1i am currently running virtualbox on xubuntu(host) and want to install xubuntu as a guest os too, but i have one question :)09:57
apm1do i have to install the proprietary drivers for my gpu in the virtual machine too?09:58
apm1i  have already installed the drivers on the host os09:59
tsimpsonthe VM doesn't have direct access to your hardware, but rather virtual hardware. so you shouldn't need to install any proprietary drivers10:00
apm1tsimpson, but i will be able to use my gpu properly to play some lite games?10:01
tsimpsonI think vbox has the option to use graphics acceleration, so just make sure that box is checked in the VMs settings10:02
apm1^i am actually installing wine in the VM and with wine gta3 .10:02
tsimpsonugg, wine is a different story all together, good luck ;)10:03
apm1tsimpson, but virtualbox detects 2d accelration as a non optimal setting , so what about that ?10:03
tsimpsontesting, see what the performance is like without and see what it's like with10:04
Unit193tsimpson: Jockey typically pulls up guest additions, actually.10:05
apm1tsimpson, the manual for virtual box says it supports 3d accelration for linux but not 2d , wtf is with that10:05
tsimpsonUnit193: guess addition is not proprietary afaik ;)10:05
apm1jockey ?10:05
tsimpsonapm1: #vbox would know more than I10:06
apm1there is a channell for vbox ?10:06
apm1damn i am old10:06
Unit193In repo, not proprietary.10:06
apm1Unit193, what ?10:07
Unit193Ignore that.  Yes there is a channel for vitualbox, #vbox as tsimpson said, though it is early morning for some folk.10:07
apm1tsimpson, what is jockey ?10:08
tsimpsonjockey is the software that detects what drivers your hardware needs and grabs it for you10:08
apm1tsimpson, ok thanks10:10
=== Zac is now known as Guest59236
apm1tsimpson, so according to you i must install jockey in the guest os and then run it and it will install all the necessary drivers :)10:28
tsimpsonjockey should already be installed, though it may be the text-only version jockey-text10:30
apm1so i just type jockey in the terminal and it will do all the stuff on it's own ?10:31

apm1i just used xubuntu software center but could not completely download a package(lost wifi connectivity) , so what should i do about it ? if i don't wanna reinstall it , will the partial package which i downloaded will it be a problem for "apt tools " ?13:04
apm1^should i delete the package from the "apt cache " ?13:04
apm1did people here have sworn to never answer noob questions :D13:19
pAt__apm1, :D13:38
pAt__the question is quite good even13:38
pAt__normally it shouldn't be a problem. If you want to go sure, you can do the following in the terminal:13:38
apm1pAt__, but yet no one has answerd ?13:38
apm1^except you13:39
pAt__sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get -f install && sudo apt-get install yourpackage13:39
pAt__^^13:39
pAt__not everybody is sitting in front of the computer and waiting for questions ;)13:39
apm1^i know about apt tools and their usage commands but did not know how much abstraction does ubuntu software center provide or does it have the potential to screw up the whole apt infrastructure ;)13:40
pAt__I am not sure what the software center is doing in the background either, but I expect that it just uses apt-get in a normal way. Everything else would be a surprise for me :D13:42
apm1pAt__, that means you and i both intend to ask the same question let's wait or google until we find the answer :D13:43
pAt__I am not really looking for an answer :D13:44
pAt__cause I do not use the software center very often except for stuff to buy13:44
pAt__otherwise I use Synaptic or apt-get13:44
apm1pAt__, same here13:44
pAt__but yes, if somebody has an answer on that, I would also read it :D13:44
apm1i hope the paid apps are freesoftware ( i think they are ) :)13:45
apm1^free as in freedom :D13:45
pAt__hmm, I think that depends on the app itself13:46
pAt__there are also closed source apps included13:47
pAt__like pdf studio i.e.13:47
apm1really closed source , man that i didn't expect from canonical :(13:47
pAt__If you are using the flash plugin, you are used to closed source software apm1 ;)13:51
apm1i am not using flash :)13:52
pAt__wow, ok :)13:52
apm1but i am using proprietary drivers :(13:52
pAt__that would have been my next question ;)13:52
apm1^ a necessary evil :(13:53
pAt__it is hard to just use open source software13:53
pAt__I use it mostly, and that's ok for me.13:53
pAt__But maybe we should switch to #xubuntu-offtopic ;)13:53

v1adimirsry connection/network i mean14:55
CrisBeeI did, but to be honest I don't know what the results mean. I will ping google, wait a second14:55
v1adimirnot sure what's the best way to check the adapter setup14:55

Mathiastry downloading something over http14:56
v1adimirdownloading won't matter for udp or whatever may be slowing it14:56
Mathiasv1adimir: just checking if it's the connection (or something limiting http)14:56
CrisBeeI am more than sure that it is not my connection14:57
Mathiasif it isn't then it must be something on the comp14:57
CrisBeeI used it before I setup xubuntu and it was good, after setup it was bad.14:57
v1adimiryea, yea, i didn't mean you connection - but the setup/config14:57
Mathiassounds weird14:57
CrisBeeAh okay, sorry.14:57
v1adimiri typed it all wrong anyway :s14:57
CrisBeeI have the feeling my RAM is full by some time. tried free -o and it doesn't look that good I think.14:58

CrisBeeThanks anyway so far! :)15:03
Mathiassomeone should know :P15:03
Mathiasif you haven't used it so much, try a reinstallation15:03
CrisBeeHm, I can try it. But I am not sure if this will solve it. I mean, it is the standard installation from ISO15:04
CrisBeeOh my...hope my english is okay. It is not my native language! :D15:04
v1adimirdid you do sudo ufw enable?.. maybe someone is ddosing you ;p15:07
v1adimirsudo ufw disable if it goes horribly wrong15:08
CrisBee:D I can't remember I did that XD Why should I?^^15:08
v1adimirit's just the firewall layer, to block incoming15:08
Mathias"man ufw"15:09
v1adimir(default config)15:09
CrisBeeHow can I check if it is enabled?15:09
v1adimirsudo ufw status verbose if i got it right15:09
Mathiasit also works without verbose15:10
CrisBeeinactive it says15:10
Mathiasjust spits out "Status: inactive"15:10
CrisBeeSo I guess that is good, right? :D15:10
v1adimiryou can stick it on if you're not using routing, like for torrents or whatever15:10
CrisBeeI feel like a bad noob atm XD15:11
v1adimir'ufw' from software center has 'Firewall Configuration' that can add default rules for Transmission automatically15:11
CrisBeeThe sad thing is I am using Linux since 6 years now15:11
v1adimirbut i doubt it'll fix anything :)15:12
CrisBeeI used 'top' while firefox is running. Doesn't look strange to me:15:16

CrisBeeOh man...I won't care for it anymore today. I'll just have a beer now and wait for my friends to arrive :D Thank you for your help.15:19
v1adimirtry again later if you like =)15:20
MathiasCrisBee: try idling here so people can respond if they know what the answer is15:21
v1adimir^15:21
CrisBeeDon't laugh at me, but how do I do it? :D15:22
CrisBeeoops :D15:22
Mathiasdon't close the xchat :P15:22
CrisBee:D :D :D15:22
holsteinCrisBee: how about the connection? do you have another option? try wired if you are on wireless15:23
CrisBeeI am wired15:23
CrisBeeI hate wireless XD15:23
CrisBeeBut I recognized a strange thing here. The network symbol in my tray is the wireless one15:24
CrisBee:D15:24
Mathiaso_O15:24
holsteinCrisBee: you can hate it the wireless connection while you try it for troubleshooting purposes15:24
CrisBeeCan't try wireless now15:24
Mathiastry unchecking "enable wireless" in the network manager/menu thing15:24
holsteinCrisBee: im just trying to take whatever driver you are currently using with whatever device out of the equation15:25
CrisBeeethernet, driver: forcedeth, 100 Mb/s15:27
holsteinCrisBee: i would try and take things out of the equation, and see what the issue is... even just a simple speed test15:28
holsteinhttp://wiki.openwrt.org/doc/howto/bwmon15:29
CrisBeeThe thing is, I am sure it isn't hardware related. As said, I used Ubuntu 12.04 with Gnome, later LXDE and everthing was fine. A few hours later with xubuntu 12.04 it isn't working fine anymore.15:29
v1adimirholstein: nice link....15:30
CrisBeeI will give bwmon a try, thank you :)15:30
holsteinCrisBee: boot into LXDE and confirm.. it could also be just a momentary issue with your connection15:30
CrisBeeI checked bandwith online with a speedtest and for me the test was okay. DSL 600015:31
holsteinCrisBee: so, whats the issue?15:31
holsteinv1adimir: :)15:31
CrisBeeThat webbrowsing is still slow on facebook, youtube and deviantart. Those are the sites I use the most. Other websites are mostly fine15:31
MathiasCrisBee: try disabling javascript15:32
holsteinCrisBee: thos are "slow" for me as well. could be flash, or ads, or like Mathias is suggesting.. i wouldnt base anything on those specific sites...15:32
Mathiasedit > preferences > content > enable javascript (uncheck it)15:32
holsteincould be graphics card driver15:33
CrisBeeHm...graphic card driver, that is worth a try15:33
CrisBeeBoom! Maybe that is it, I haven't installed the recommended driver for my graphic card!15:35
holsteinCrisBee: that can help in my experience.. it can also make it worse15:35
CrisBeeI will do it now and give feedback when it is done15:35
holsteinCrisBee: feedback? to youtube? and deviant art?15:35
v1adimir^ hehe ;p15:35
CrisBeeIn past I always used the correct driver, for some reason I forgot to do so now15:36
v1adimirCrisBee: nvidia?15:36
holsteinthe "correct" driver might not exist for your hardware15:36
CrisBeeyes15:36
v1adimirso it could be hardware acceleration, yea15:36
v1adimirif the default ain't doing it, there's the xswat ppa15:36
holsteinyou can also give feedback to the hardware vendor15:37
NeuhNeuhHi again :)15:37
v1adimirwb :p15:37
NeuhNeuhHow run automaticaly a sh script after displaying desktop of XFCE ?15:38
NeuhNeuhSorry if my English is not very good ^^'15:38
CrisBeeI will restart my computer now, I'll be back soon! :D Thanks15:38
v1adimirgl15:38
holsteinNeuhNeuh: i would try this http://xubuntugeek.blogspot.com/2011/12/add-application-to-xfcexubuntu-session.html15:39
NeuhNeuhholstein, But my script for replace xfwm4 by compiz don't work :/15:39
v1adimirhttps://www.google.com/search?q=ubuntu+run+script+on+boot15:39
NeuhNeuhNo on boot15:39
NeuhNeuhAfter loading XFCE15:40
holsteinNeuhNeuh: i would refer to this...15:40
CrisBeeWeeeheee :D15:40
CrisBeeMUUUUCH better now, thanks thanks thanks!15:40
v1adimirCrisBee: working? o.015:40
NeuhNeuhholstein, But my script don't work with this :(15:40
CrisBeeyes! :D15:40
v1adimirnice, nice15:40
NeuhNeuhI try again with a sleep15:40
v1adimir:D15:40
CrisBeeI can't believe I forgot to use the recommended driver15:40
holsteinhttp://xubuntublog.wordpress.com/2007/12/09/xubuntu-compiz-pretty-pretty-xubuntu/ this bascially worked for me NeuhNeuh15:41
v1adimirheh :)15:41
CrisBeeI am so glad now, you made my day guys (and lads)!15:41
CrisBeevladimir, mathias, holstein... *hug* XD15:42
holsteinCrisBee: enjoy!15:42
NeuhNeuhOk15:43
holsteinNeuhNeuh: i would test it manually.. make sure its all working, and your graphics card is supporting it... then i would test the startup script...15:44
NeuhNeuhholstein, Compiz ils run but only manually :(15:44
NeuhNeuhI try my Script15:45
holsteinNeuhNeuh: then, you'll have no trouble seeing how to add compiz --replace to startup from that guide i linked15:45
CrisBeeI am offline now, thank you again. I will have a beer for everyone of you guys! :) Have a nice day!15:45
CrisBeeSee you! :)15:45
v1adimiru2, tc15:45
holsteinthere are 2 options mentioned there NeuhNeuh and i did the first one, the "easy" one.. that worked in xubuntu 12.04 for me15:46
NeuhNeuhOk15:47
NeuhNeuhI try to relog my session15:47
NeuhNeuhHi again15:48
NeuhNeuhholstein, My script don't want to run correctly :(15:49
NeuhNeuhI try to put a sleep before script15:49
NeuhNeuhOk good15:50
NeuhNeuhBut simulation of keystroke don't work http://pastebin.com/0RL6hPEm15:51
NeuhNeuhwork only if I run script now15:51
holsteinNeuhNeuh: i would add compiz --replace to startup.. get that working on its own, then move on to whatever else you are trying to accomplish15:52
NeuhNeuhholstein, compiz--replace on this script work15:53
NeuhNeuhholstein, But after, I want to enable effects (rain and dark windows) by simulation of keystroke (xte)15:53
NeuhNeuhBut this keystroke was don't send while loading session :/ He work only if I run the script after. But compiz ils launched15:53
NeuhNeuhCompiz is not problem now :/15:53
holsteinNeuhNeuh: i would do those seperately.. i have not tried that, but that is likely what is/was causing the script to fail15:53
NeuhNeuhOk15:54
NeuhNeuhOk I restart session x)15:56
lightahi hey how can I change my PERL5LIB var ?17:09
David-Alighta: set it (and export it) in ~/.profile (is it already set by default at yours? not at mine)17:39
lightathx David17:40
lightaI found out finally17:40
lightaexport PERL5LIB=$PERL5LIB:/<my lib path>17:41
David-Alighta: that will work in xubuntu and most systems, but .profile is meant to be used by both sh and bash, so "export" should be a separate command17:42
lightaok but I did try that actually first, I put in /etc/profile (I wanted the link for all user). I just added PERL5LIB=<my path>17:45
lightaand when I tryed to reload there was an error17:45
David-Alighta: that way <my path> is first in @INC, could it be that something in <my path> overrides some standard lib?17:48
David-Alighta: by "export" i mean "PERL5LIB=$PERL5LIB:/<my path>; export PERL5LIB"17:49
lightahmm not sure about that but I think it append instead override17:50
lightalike if module not found go in user defined lib17:51
lightaat least that how I wanted to be17:51
lighta  @INC:    /usr/share/perl/custom-lib/    /etc/perl    /usr/local/lib/perl/5.14.2    /usr/local/share/perl/5.14.2    /usr/lib/perl5    /usr/share/perl5    /usr/lib/perl/5.14    /usr/share/perl/5.14    /usr/local/lib/site_perl17:52

livingdaylightThe efforts to standardize on a kernel and a set of core libraries were undermined by the Distro of the Day that held the position of power. If you are the top dog, you did not want to make any concessions that would help other distributions catch up with you. Being incompatible became a way of gaining market share. A strategy that continues to be employed by the 800 pound gorillas in the Linux world. To sum u19:01

learc83I have a tablet with an Atmel touchscreen controller, it works in 12.10, but not in 12.04, however 12.10 alpha is ultra buggy on my hardware, do you think it will work if I install 12.04 and upgrade the kernel?19:30
pAt_learc83, no idea, but 12.10 is already beta now19:54
PhantorGorthI am having a peculiar issue. When I try to open my "File Manager" which is launched via the command "exo-open --launch FileManager %u" or open files in the download list of Firefox I get the package installer opening and then either does nothing in case of the file manager, or throws an error say that the download file isn't a package.20:11
PhantorGorthI haven't tried to see what happens if the download file is a .deb file. I assume that works.20:11
