mysteriousdarrenkennett: details?06:21
theguywithanaxeHello everyone06:27
mysteriousdarrenKentos: figuring things out?06:29
theguywithanaxeyeah, i pulled the drives out, cleared the OS HDDs and got through the install06:29
theguywithanaxenow im wondering if i can (after setting up a mirror raid for the OS drive) create post install another raid with my remaining 4 drives06:30
theguywithanaxenot sure how that would exactly work, but i want to use them for data storage06:31
theguywithanaxei know the 4 drives i want to make a new raid for are on a seperate card, should be an md0 and a md1 if load in the drives again correct? or is the mdadm arrays only shown if configured already in a raid set-up?06:36
theguywithanaxethrough the instalation that is06:36
theguywithanaxeodd, im using my alt username lol06:38

GargoyleIs there a recommended / standard place to put "route add" commands for upstart (12.04)? Is rc.local still a good place?07:37
lifelessGargoyle: generally in the ifup for the interface07:48
Kentosi can check the manual quick, i thought i saw something in there about routing07:50
Kentosstatic or dynamic routing?07:51
Gargoylestatic.07:51
GargoyleNode has two interfaces eth0 = iternet, eth1 = LAN. Routes are for LAN traffic07:52
Gargoylethe scripts in /etc/network/if-up.d look a bit mental, I might just stick with rc.local! :)07:53
lifelessGargoyle: in interfaces, post-up ip route add foo via ar07:56
lifelessGargoyle: don't need a separate script07:56
Kentoshmm, i don't see much info on the configuration of the IP routing. It does have some info on the ethtool program07:57
Kentosand how to route to a gatewal, and a little on Kernal IP routing tables07:58
Kentosgateway**07:58
Kentosare you using a seperate router for the lan?07:58
GargoyleKentos: Yes. The servers need to know the route to the other nets is via a second firewall / vpn endpoint. Not the default gw.07:59
Gargoylethanks lifeless07:59
lifelessGargoyle: man interfaces FWIW08:00
lifelessGargoyle: you can do a script in network/if-up.d if you want08:00
Gargoylelifeless: I keep forgetting that most config files have a man page!08:00
lifelessGargoyle: just need to check for $IFACE at the top of each script.08:01
Kentosyeah, i found a nother way to do it, not sure if its as viable, but if its working via lifeless suggestion sounds like your set to go08:01
Kentoshmmm, reading up on networking =P interesting to note though it almost sounds like your bridging two network segments and then filtering from one to the other with a firewall08:07
Kentosalmost sounds like something i would want to do for security reasons08:07
Kentos@Gargoyle of course08:07
GargoyleKentos: Yes. the firewalls are establishing IPSec VPN connections08:08
Gargoyleso from home I can just connect to 192.168.100.105, for example.08:09
GargoyleOn the internet side, everything is blocked except http and IPSec.08:09
KentosI was also wondering, I have two hdd controllers, and I believe they both can be set up for a raid with 4 drives each, I unplugged the bottom array while figuring out how to get the installer to run properly, I then set up a mirror (RAID1) on two drives08:09
KentosI was wondering, since ive already installed the OS, could i still go back now, with the 4 otehr drives plugged into the bottom controller and set up a raid for data storage?08:10
GargoyleKentos: Don't see why not. You can just mount it somewhere on the filesystem08:11
Kentosmount through mdadm?08:12
Kentosim just wondering how I go about this, I havent foudn any documentation on it08:12
Gargoyleerr. Been a while since I did it, but IIRC, mdadm is used to create the RAID. then you would use normal mount. eg mount /dev/mdc1 /mnt/secondary_raid_storage08:13
Kentosalright, so i just have to create the RAID and then mount as a filesystem. Ill check out what i got on info and plow through it tonight08:17
GargoyleKentos: You create the RAID, and then you'll have a new block device like /dev/md??08:18
Gargoylethen you use that like you would any other disk. Create your filesystem, mount it, etc.08:19
Kentosyeah im pretty sure thats how it will go, md0 is already configured etc. so md1 would be the next raid array if set up i believe, basically acting as the software raid controller08:20

decciAny idea about migrate from internal samba authentication to LDAP authentication keeping the same functionalities.14:43
decciCurrently there is a working Samba domain controller. On this server we have the samba domain controller as well as a file server with different shares for each user including profiles. The PCs are connecting with Windows Roaming Profiles. The two servers are up and running14:43
Psi-Jackdecci: Migrate?14:43
Psi-JackAs in, keeping current database that's in use now, and migrate that into your LDAP store?14:44
decciPsi-Jack: Let me explain : Currently there is a working Samba domain controller. On this server we have the samba domain controller as well as a file server with different shares for each user including profiles. The PCs are connecting with Windows Roaming Profiles. The two servers are up and running.14:45
decciPsi-Jack: Integrate the existing, working (and in use!) Samba domain controller and file server with a new LDAP server. To summarize, the aim is to migrate from internal samba authentication to LDAP authentication keeping the same functionalities.14:45
Psi-JackOkay, so yeah, you want to convert tdbsam to ldapsam.14:46
Psi-JackHave you already imported all your user accounts into LDAP and just needing the Samba information?14:47
decciPsi-Jack: No..I need to do that too..14:48
decciPsi-Jack: Where shall I start...I did long time importing NIS users to OpenLDAP and 389 DS14:48
Psi-Jackyou need to do that first, then you can do the pdbedit -i tdbsam -e ldapsam migration. :)14:48
decciPsi-Jack: But new to this case14:49
decciPsi-Jack: I am aware of PADL Migration tools though14:50
decciPADL migration tools is used to migrate the  POSIX accounts to LDAP but what about Samba to LDAP?14:50
Psi-Jackpdbedit, as I said.14:51
decciPsi-Jack: This is my smb.conf http://pastebin.com/uZkZwt1R14:51
decciPsi-Jack: Okie...so pdbedit will migrate my samba users to LDAP, then?14:52
decciPsi-Jack: What further configuration do I need and how much complicated it looks for setting up whole authentication through LDAP14:53
decciPsi-Jack: There are lots of windows related share and configuration as seen in http://pastebin.com/uZkZwt1R14:54
decciPsi-Jack:  we have the samba domain controller as well as a file server with different shares for each user including profiles. The PCs are connecting with Windows Roaming Profiles.14:54
decciPsi-Jack: Will it be a complicated?14:55
Psi-Jackdecci: The only thing you're changing is where the samba user account information is stored, nothing else.14:56
decciPsi-Jack: Okie14:56
Psi-JackAnd to configure samba to use ldap instead of tdb14:56
Psi-JackYour LDAP setup will depend on what you use for an LDAP server. Personally, I'd recommend you use OpenDJ for an LDAP server since it has a lot of power behind it, and it can even keep your passwords automatically synchronized between samba's unique format, and passwd accounts.14:57

LinuxAdminhi guys, I'm getting problems with Ubuntu Server 12.04 installation20:06
LinuxAdminI can install everything without problems, but after update the system I cannot boot20:07
LinuxAdmingrub cannot recognize my disks20:07
LinuxAdminI'm already reading some articles I think will solve the issue but I'm wondering why such a thing happens on a server flavor20:08
LinuxAdminhave someone experienced this before?20:09
ikoniadefine doesn't recognise disks, where does it not see the, what's the error ?20:09
LinuxAdminwhen the system boots it goes to grub rescue command line20:10
LinuxAdminI foot to say that I have raid configured20:11
LinuxAdminmy boot disk should be md020:11
Troy^hmm probablly configure it wrong? this is a fresh install right?20:11
ikoniasoftware raid, hardware raid, fakeraid ?20:11
Troy^mdadm i assume20:11
ikoniawell, it's easy to let him answer20:12
Troy^lol right20:12
LinuxAdminright Troy, the system installs correctly, I restart it after the installation and everything goes fine, but after some updates the system do not boot anymore20:12
ikoniasoftware raid, hardware raid, fakeraid ?20:12
LinuxAdminmdadm, yes Troy20:12
ikoniaare you using an mdadm.conf ?20:13
Troy^so your at the grub rescue?20:13
LinuxAdminI suppose mdadm uses it by default20:14
ikoniano, it doesn't20:14
LinuxAdminI have not watch it yet20:14
Troy^type ls in grub rescue does your md0 come up?20:15
LinuxAdminI installed ubuntu server before, with software raid and it used mdadm.conf, that's why I'm supposing it is configured by default20:15
xnoxif there is no mdadm.conf, update-initramfs -u will create one in the initramfs20:16
LinuxAdminI'm reading an article that advice editing mdadm.conf, do you think this can solve the problem?20:16
LinuxAdminI'm considering editing mdadm.conf with a live cd and then restart the server20:17
Troy^http://paste.ubuntu.com/1195363/ this is what mine looks like 2x hard drives (Raid 1)20:17
Troy^I don't really know much but i know mine works lol, i can see the two drives in the array20:18
LinuxAdminas I said I already installed an ubuntu server 10.04 with software raid and it has an mdadm.conf with the corresponding partitions configured20:19
LinuxAdminit is pretty much the same of yours20:19
Troy^10.04?20:20
LinuxAdminI will check with a live cd what it looks like, if the raid is configured or if something was touched with updates20:20
Troy^LinuxAdmin: did you do a dist-upgrade?20:21
LinuxAdminTroy, this happened on a 11.0420:21
Troy^a dist-upgrade might definietly break something like that20:21
LinuxAdminno Try, I installed it from a cd, after the installation I restart the system and everything was fine, but after some automatic updates, the system could not boot any more20:22
Troy^hmm ok20:23
LinuxAdminI'm talking about 10.4 because I installed a 10.04 before with software raid and it created automatically mdadm.conf file20:23
Troy^oh ok20:25
LinuxAdminTroy, o you think if I edit mdadm.conf with a live cd and configure the correct partitions and raid arrays, should it boots normally?20:25
Troy^i would also check your grub config too20:25
LinuxAdminok20:25
Troy^make sure it's boot from the right partition20:25
LinuxAdminok it's what I'll check tomorrow20:27
LinuxAdminthanks for the advice20:27

Yippy_Tornew to linux/ubuntu server here: sorry if this is a stupid question:  When I start a process on then command line...How do I get it to drop back to command line and not stay in the running process?21:20
Kentosinteresting, if i configure a hardware Raid, and have two configurations, they will show up in ubuntu as two sperate HDD's correct? but they will be of the hardware configuration22:09
patdk-lapyep22:10
Kentosthat is the better option to go with correct?22:10
patdk-lapheh?22:10
patdk-lapyou didin't give options, how can I compare?22:10
Kentosas opposed to leaving them unconfigured as scsi drives and installing them via a software raid through ubuntu installation22:11
patdk-lapthat all depends on your plans22:11
patdk-lapdo you want to make use of the raid card features and benifits?22:11
KentosHave no idea what those are22:11
patdk-lapdo you perfer to do it yourself? or use mdadm instead? for better compatability if you need to change a failed raid card22:12
KentosI want whatever is going to produce the least issues, but more importantly be configurable to set up online data storage22:13
Kentosim fairly sure if i go with the hardware it will simplify the installation and drive acess as it will be considered one HDD for each array22:14
Kentosessentially22:14
Kentoshowever the RAID setup for hardware Im not entirely familiar with, logical drives etc. it seems like its a bit more of a task wtih nothing here to really help me aka like a manual for the raid cards22:16
