eamonWhat is the most stable version of kubuntu 12.10?02:21
bazhangthere is none, its in beta eamon02:21
needhelp1bazhang, sure thing. sorry for the inconvenience.02:22
eamonbazhang: I was assuming that ubuntu's "beta 1" was more stable than the nightly. I was wondering if something similar existts for kubuntu, for which I can only find nightlys. Do you maintain that my initial presumption is incorrect?02:26
bazhangeamon, it's in development. not released means not stable.02:27
eamonthat's a dichotomous meaning. from my wording, namely the inclusion of a superlative, it was quit easy to deduce that I was employing the non-technical use02:30
eamonbazhang^02:30
bazhang!info unity-2d02:31

eamonIs there a beta release of kubuntu?02:32
tambuHey guys, 12.10 is there a way to switch to 2D mode of unity? my graphics card has issues with it02:33
bazhangyes there is02:33
bazhanghttps://wiki.kubuntu.org/QuantalQuetzal/Beta1/Kubuntu eamon02:34
bazhangaugh ask and quit02:35
trismtambu: if you install gnome-panel, gnome classic (no effects) should work, otherwise unity is supposed to fallback to using software rendered graphics with llvmpipe but I haven't really played with it02:35
Daekdroomllvmpipe might not be working very well with Unity yet.02:46
tambutrism: I can't get package manager to pull up compwiz keeps crashing. will "apt-get install gnome-panel" work?02:50
trismtambu: yep02:51
tambutrism ok installed "gnome-panel" not sure what you mean by gnome classic (no effects) is that a tool someplace?02:57
Daekdroomtambu, it's a session option in the login screen02:57
bazhangit's a choice in the login window02:57
ChogyDanhey, um, how can I change the mounting mount point behaviour back to the old method?02:57
ChogyDanIm not sure Im saying it right02:57
tambuah ok logging off :)02:57
bazhangChogyDan, fstab?02:58
ChogyDanbazhang: you mean, just create fstab entries for the partitions02:58
bazhangChogyDan, you need the uuid?02:58
ChogyDanno, Im just used to double clicking in Computer02:59
tambutrism: Sorry guys logged off and even rebooted after installing "gnome-pane" I don't see any options to change the login session is there an obvious step I missed?03:02
ChogyDantambu: you don't see gnome-classic?03:02
ChogyDantambu: you need to click the icon in the upper right03:03
trismtambu: there is an ubuntu symbol next to your name on the greeter03:03
tambutrism: ah thanks I saw that there before I installed gnome-class and had clicked on it to no effect.. didn't realize it was added there03:04
trismtambu: ahh interesting, didn't realize it was non-functional with only one session03:06

Captain_Protondoes anyone know if they plan on integrating lighting in the time/date applet?16:02
pinnenHi, I am about to install "Ubuntu 12.10 beta1" and I am using the normal amd64 -install -disk, with an nvidia 8800GT -graphics card, but the installation fails.. when i press .. "Start ubuntu setup" from the install usb I made.. I get this question.. "Undefined video mode number: 0" .. And when it tries to boot X11(the installer) the driver seems to crash.. and I get strange colors and nothing happens. Any tips? :)16:31

pinnenIt looks something like that16:40
trismpinnen: if you hit f6 from the syslinux menu when booting the iso, you should be able to enable nomodeset which sometimes works around those sort of problems16:42
trismpinnen: unless you're using unetbootin in which case you might have to manually add it to the line16:43

Captain_Protondoes anyone know if they plan on integrating lighting in the time/date applet?17:03
jbichapinnen: I filed bug 1049650 for it17:04
ubottuLaunchpad bug 1049650 in linux (Ubuntu) "Regression: "Undefined video mode" with 3.5.0-14.16" [Medium,Incomplete] https://launchpad.net/bugs/104965017:04
jbichawell at least one part of your problem, you might be having other issues17:05
alkisgHi, I see no i386 version in http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/12.10/beta-1/, should I download the daily instead? Is it installable?17:23
trismalkisg: http://releases.ubuntu.com/quantal/17:25
alkisgThank you trism17:25
alkisgBtw, is 12.10 installable in vbox (no 3D) now that unity-2d is missing?17:32
jtayloralkisg: yes it now uses llvmpipe17:33
alkisgCool17:33
jtaylorbut there are still issues17:33
* alkisg is just trying to verify that keyboard layouts for languages != english are still broken since lightdm landed...17:34
alkisg12.04 didn't solve that, maybe now they'll put an iso testing task there, solve the problem and backport it to 12.04, as it's really annoying not being able to type in one's language...17:35
alkisgThat part broke first in gdm, we sent patches, then in gdm2, patches again, then in lightdm, accountsservice, ubiquity-dm... progress gets backwards there :(17:36
smallfoot-hi19:31
smallfoot-i just run an update today19:32
smallfoot-and now my fonts look thin and ugly19:32
jtaylorhave that too, forced me back to precise ._.19:35
trismsmallfoot-: as mentioned in bug 1049963 do you have ubuntu-default-settings installed?19:36
ubottuLaunchpad bug 1049963 in gnome-settings-daemon (Ubuntu) "default xsettings setting for "hinting" should be set to "slight"" [Undecided,Incomplete] https://launchpad.net/bugs/104996319:36
smallfoot-oh19:37
smallfoot-no i dont19:37
smallfoot-should i?19:37
trismsmallfoot-: yes that is where the hinting setting is now19:37
trism(fonts look fine here on my desktop)19:37
jbichasmallfoot-: do you use Unity?19:38
smallfoot-no, i use gnome-session-fallback (classic)19:38
jbichasmallfoot-: you could install ubuntu-gnome-default-settings if you like, it doesn't have as many overrides as ubuntu-default-settings19:38
smallfoot-why doesn't ubuntu-desktop depend on ubuntu-default-settings ?19:39
jbichait does19:39
smallfoot-and why was font hinting dropped from g-s-d?19:39
trismsmallfoot-: forget to dist-upgrade?19:39
jbichabecause it was moved to ubuntu-default-settings, we don't need the override in 2 places19:39
jbichaand some people may actually like the upstream defaults19:40
smallfoot-trism, i just run apt-get update & upgrade19:40
trismsmallfoot-: it was just added so you'll need dist-upgrade to pull it in19:40
smallfoot-wow, upstream fonts are horrible ugly. is this how debian looks like?19:40
smallfoot-trism, thanks19:41
jbichawell GNOME actually uses fonts-cantarell by default, but yeah19:41
smallfoot-wow19:42
smallfoot-now i know why people use ubuntu instead of debian19:42
smallfoot-these fonts look fuggly19:42
smallfoot-gotta restart to get my fonts back pretty19:43
smallfoot-thanks, fonts look great again! stunning! :)19:45
