l057c0d3rhey whats good peeps16:12
l057c0d3rquick questoin....  what did i do wrong.. i made a lubuntu usb...  and had it make a persistence file.... yet its not very persistent.. it forgets everything everytime i boot....16:12
holsteinl057c0d3r: i just install to the USB16:13
l057c0d3rwas told that kills the usb...16:13
holsteinin what way? swap? just dont install swap16:14
l057c0d3rtrue....  so it would use ram for tmpf16:15
holsteinyou could set it to16:15
holsteinthats waht i do when i want "persistence".. but im not worried about "killing" usb sticks either.. i just want a normal install16:15
l057c0d3rk..  i was just under the impression that the persistence file  would save files and installed apps ext......16:15
holsteinl057c0d3r: depends on how you set up the persistence... i used to try, and did actually get a few working, but i decided it was easier, and more like what i wanted in the end to just do a normal install16:16
holsteinif i wanted persistence like that, i might use something like pupply linux and just save the config back to the USB each time16:17
l057c0d3ronly reason i really didnt want to install to the usb  but use a live cd boot was because i was going to use it on more then one computer... some being a lot older then my new pc16:17
l057c0d3rthat way it would detect hardware on boot.....  but oh well..  third try.. and persistence seems useless at this point :-p16:18
l057c0d3ri do thank you for the advice.....16:18
holsteini just used a pendrive linux link16:19
l057c0d3rtried that....  got a  exe from ubuntu forums that made my third one for me.... and it still didnt work16:20
holsteinwhat are the errors?16:20
l057c0d3rno errors16:20
holsteinjust no persistence..\16:20
l057c0d3rsaid everything was created successfully....  just no persistence16:20
l057c0d3rin booted into the usb atm.....16:21
holsteini wouldnt imagine being able to "fix" anything from in there16:21
l057c0d3ri know16:21
l057c0d3rso much for third times the charm :-p16:22
holsteinwhat are you using to create the USB?16:23
holsteinl057c0d3r: i tried probably 20+ times and finally learned how to get a few working16:23
l057c0d3rany tips you could pass along16:23
holsteinl057c0d3r: what are you using to create the USB?16:24
l057c0d3rgot a lubuntu.12.4 desktop iso and universal-usb-installer16:24
holsteinl057c0d3r: i did not use that tool16:25
l057c0d3rmind if i ask what tool you would recommend16:26
holsteinim looking for a good guide16:26
holsteinwhen i did it it was pre-ubuntu10.0416:26
holsteinmight have been this tool from in windows for all i remember http://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal-usb-installer-easy-as-1-2-3/16:27
l057c0d3rmuch thanked..  looked at a lot of guides..  most told me to do it from inside the live cd..  and select the create usb disc... however lubuntu is missing that option16:27
holsteinl057c0d3r: i would try with the main distro16:28
holsteinmain ubuntu... you can add LXDE there, or maybe just learn how to do it16:28
l057c0d3rheh thats the app i used16:28
holsteinl057c0d3r: i might have used it in windows, and with a different iso.. and several version ago16:29
holsteinl057c0d3r: if it is not compaitible with the currect ubuntu isos, it wont work16:29
holsteini remember using some GUI, and then doing it "the hard way"16:30
holsteinhttp://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/diskimg/readme.txt16:31
holsteinhttps://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCD/Persistence actually looks familiar as well16:33
holsteinhttps://wiki.ubuntu.com/LiveUsbPendrivePersistent looks handy16:34
l057c0d3ryeah lubuntu12.4 was in the list......  but maybe its because of 64 rather then 32 iso...16:34
l057c0d3rthanks again...  off to reading some more16:35
holsteinl057c0d3r: i would do 3216:36
holsteinl057c0d3r: enjoy!16:36

miarfhi, are the lubuntu (12.04) default kb shortcuts documented somewhere?17:05
Unit193In ~/.config/openbox/lubuntu-rc.xml17:06
miarfthat's the settings file, yes17:12
miarfi was kinda after proper documentation17:12
miarfthanks anyway17:12
Unit193https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Lubuntu/Keyboard may not be up to date though, I don't know.17:13
battlehandsI have matlab connected to my netbook via an external dvd drive.  I'm not sure how to install it using linux.  Please advise.18:27
wxlbattlehands: basically you need to play with your bios/bootup to get it to boot to that drive once you have an install disc in it. as far as the bios is concerned, each manufacturer and each computer is often different, so you'll need to either be more specific or google it yourself with more specific information.18:29
wxlbattlehands: as far as the disc is concerned, you need to download the iso and burn it to a disc. that's pretty easy.18:29
battlehandswxl, the dvd is being read, and the following items are within the mathworks dvd: installformacosx.app, unix, win32, autorun.inf, install_unix.sh, setup.exw18:30
battlehandssetup.exe*18:30
wxloh18:31
wxlhah18:31
wxli misunderstood18:31
wxlokokko18:31
wxlSORRY :)18:31
battlehandsI probably wasnt too clear18:31
wxlassumedly you have lubuntu and that's why you're here18:31
battlehands^18:31
wxlthat being said you likely just need to run that install_unix.sh script18:31
wxlprobably best to do in terminal18:31
wxlin case it's interactive18:31
battlehandslubuntu was recommended to me because it is a "light" os and my netbook is not very powerful18:31
battlehandsso do I open terminal and "run install_unix.sh"?18:32
wxlall the other files are not relevant though unix must be a directory that the install_unix.sh script uses18:32
wxlclick menu → accessories → lxterminal18:32
wxlthen you need to cd to the correct directory18:32
wxli'm PRETTY sure it will mount to /media18:32
wxlso type "cd /media" and hit enter18:33
wxlthen type "ls" and hit enter18:33
wxl(don't type the quotes btw)18:33
battlehandsyeah18:33
wxlif something shows up there that looks like it refers to the dvd, then cd to that18:33
battlehandsI'm familiar with basic cd commands18:33
wxlok wasn't sure18:33
battlehandsthe cd shows up under the media list18:33
wxlso do get to wherever you need to be where the script is18:33
battlehandsalso, I didn't know about /media  :)18:33
wxlonce you're there it's as simple as "./install_unix.sh"18:33
wxlif it gives you an error because of permissions or something (it is doing an install) you may need to add sudo to the beginning18:34
battlehandshmm18:34
wxlwhich will as you for your password18:34
battlehandswhen I do cd /media, the cd shows up, but I cannot "cd" to it18:34
wxlok if you've alread "cd /media" can you paste the result of "ls" ?18:35
battlehandsMATHWORKS_R2010A18:35
wxlok18:35
wxlnow do "cd MATHWORKS_R2010A"18:35
battlehandsno such file or directory18:36
wxlstrange18:36
battlehandsalso, is lubuntu a linux kernal 2.6 or higher?18:36
wxlwell depends on what version of lubuntu18:37
battlehands12.418:37
TheLordOfTimewxl, pastebin the output of ls -l18:37
battlehandsdesktop18:37
TheLordOfTimei've seen these "no such file or directory" errors pop up if a folder is nonreadable18:37
battlehandsMATHWORKS_R2010A '18:37
wxlgo back to pcmanfm (file manager) and open the dvd — where you saw the file listing18:37
battlehandserr18:37
battlehandsMATHWORKS_R2010A18:37
wxlTheLordOfTime: wrong one18:37
TheLordOfTimewxl, yeah, just remembered18:37
TheLordOfTimewxl, should be -al iirc18:37
* TheLordOfTime yawns as he wakes up from the nap he was taking18:38
battlehandsTheLordOfTime: time for a nap?  You of all people should understand times importance...18:38
wxlbattlehands: you can do uname -a to be sure but you should have 3.2.0.30.3218:38
TheLordOfTimebattlehands, i havent had sleep in 3 days.  i was entitled for a nap.18:38
battlehandswxl:  perfect18:39
battlehandsTheLordOfTime: indeed you were18:39
wxlanyways battlehands once looking at the directory in pcmanfm, hit f4 and that should open it up in terminal18:39
battlehandswxl: pcmanfm?18:39
* wxl realizes, now looking at pcmanfm in quantal for the first time, it's looking gorgeous18:39
wxlbattlehands: file manager18:40
battlehandsyou are correct18:40
battlehandsit opened the dvd up in terminal18:40
battlehandsI can see all of the files listed there18:40
wxlwhat does pwd give you?18:40
battlehandspwd?18:40
TheLordOfTimea terminal command18:40
wxltype pwd and hit enter18:40
TheLordOfTime'print working directory'18:40
wxlstandards for present working directory18:40
TheLordOfTimewhichever18:40
wxlpresent/print, what's the diff18:41
wxl:)18:41
wxlgmta18:41
battlehands /media/MATHWORKS_R2010A18:41
wxlWEIRD18:41
wxlok, whatever18:41
wxlnow you can ./install_whatever.sh18:41
battlehands /install_unix.sh ?18:41
battlehandsokay18:41
wxlyep18:41
wxlDON"T FORGET THE PERIOD18:41
TheLordOfTimemight need a chmod +x18:41
wxl./install_whatever.sh18:41
TheLordOfTimeand keep the ./18:41
TheLordOfTime:P18:41
battlehandsokay18:42
battlehandsthe dvd drive is chruning18:42
battlehandschurning*18:42
wxlyeah if it doesn't run for some non-permission reason, chmod +x install_unix.sh18:42
wxlthat's what dvd drives do18:42
wxleven when reading a simple text file. i digress…18:42
battlehandswhat should I put for matlab root folder?18:43
battlehandsit is currently the directory of the dvd, which is not writable18:43
wxlwhatever you want18:43
TheLordOfTimewxl, you mean whatever you want as long as its writable18:43
wxlif it were me i might do ~/bin18:43
TheLordOfTime:P18:43
battlehandsjust ~/bin ?18:43
wxl(and make sure ~/bin is in your $PATH)18:43
wxlwell i dno't knwo if it wants a specific directory, but you could do ~/bin/matlab18:44
wxlof course if it's going to fill that with a matlab directory (don't nknow if it will) it would be lame to have ~/bin/matlab/matlab but whatever18:44
battlehandsfolder "bin" is not writable18:46
battlehandswhat about /home/battlehands18:47
battlehandscan I use that?18:47
wxl~ = /home/battlehands18:47
battlehandsokay18:47
battlehandsit won't let me use ~18:47
battlehandssome I'm going to try typing it out18:47
wxlmaybe you need to make ~/bin18:47
battlehandsit is installing18:48
battlehandsthis X11 library is not installed on this machine.  MATLAB will not be able to run until the library is installed.18:55
wxluh18:56
battlehandsit is either libXp.so or ibXp.so18:57
battlehandsI can't tell which one18:57
wxlhow do you know those are them?18:57
battlehandsthat's what the message says18:57
wxlapt-get install libxp6 libxp-dev18:58
wxlmakes sense now18:59
wxlyou should have libxp618:59
wxlbut clearly the script is compiling the source in /unix so it needs the libraries19:00
wxlwhen you have a package, you don't have the libraries because the compilation is done ahead of download/install (apt-get install)19:01
wxlthat's why even though you do have libxp6 you don't have libxp-dev :)19:01
battlehandsnothing happened19:08
battlehandsI think terminal is still stuck on trying to install matlab19:08
battlehandsoh19:08

bioterrorsudo apt-get install19:10
wxldo this:19:10
wxlsudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install ibxp-dev19:10
wxlLibxp-dev, sorry19:10
wxl(lowercase)19:10
* wxl doesn't like this keyboard19:10
battlehandspacket worked19:12
wxlyou mean the install worked?19:15
wxli fail to grok the relevance of packet in the aforementioned context. maybe you mean package.19:15
battlehandswxl: the library installed19:28
battlehandsthank you for all of your help19:28
wxlbattlehands: np enjoy and let us know if you need further help, especially if it relates specifically to lubuntu XD19:32
battlehandshow do I run matlab from lubuntu?20:47
wxlsudo wget 'https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MATLAB?action=AttachFile&do=get&target=matlab-r2011a.desktop' -O /usr/share/applications/matlab.desktop20:49
wxlyou may need to edit that file and make sure it points to the correct location20:50
wxlfrom what i see now default is /usr/local/MATLAB/R2011a for matlab root20:50
wxlhttps://help.ubuntu.com/community/MATLAB20:50
