[03:40] I am not able to load the newly installed OS on a flash drive wit two ext3 partitions one for os and other casper-rw. is there any way i can fix what is broken in the OS ... The message i get is no operating system found... first time it was loaded and grub menu came and it took forever so i came in recovery mode and did the update after that its not reading the OS.. [04:31] drupin: what? [04:32] No operating system found on boot from flash drive [04:32] whats on the flash drive? is it a good drive? [04:33] this is second time i am install the OS in it [04:33] ext3 [04:33] why ext3? [04:33] i can see the system files in it [04:33] how did you do the install? maybe you didnt get it right [04:34] i partitioned the flash in two [04:34] one for OS and other with label casper-rw [04:34] sure, but that requires a custom installer scenario [04:34] maybe you did that incorretly [04:35] and then i installed from th installer [04:35] i would probably just try reinstalling, since that takes so little time, and just go with the defaults [04:35] to the / === TheMaster is now known as Unit193 [04:36] i can see all the OS files in it [04:36] gess it the grub issue [04:36] drupin: cool.. then restore grub, and reboot and enjoy [04:36] how can i restore [04:36] otherwise, you might want to entertain why the grub install could have failed during installation [04:37] could be a bad stick [04:37] sudo update-grub /dev/sdc1 [04:37] /usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: cannot find a device for / (is /dev mounted?) [04:37] i would literally not waste anymore time on it since its a fresh install with no data [04:37] since installs are like 15 minutes now.. or less [04:37] when i want to restore grub, i reference [04:37] !grub | drupin [04:37] drupin: GRUB2 is the default Ubuntu boot manager since 9.10 (Karmic). Lost GRUB after installing Windows? See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestoreGrub - For more information and troubleshooting for GRUB2 please refer to https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2 - See !grub1 for releases before Karmic (9.10) [04:38] the bit about recovering from a live CD [04:38] it takes ok [04:38] it takes ok? [04:42] let me try boot repair [04:42] drupin: its more envolved than just running sudo update-grub [04:42] or it was when i recovered grub [04:43] there is mounting and all [04:45] i flagged boot in gparted before install [04:45] may be it screwed the default parameters [04:45] drupin: i would just let the defaults go by once, and get a booting system [04:46] the dafault waste the 4 GB [04:46] drupin: it just might bootup thought, and you can customize after that [04:47] but what about casper-rw [04:47] drupin: i wouldnt expect ubuntustudio to fit on 4gb's.. i would start with xubuntu or lubuntu and add what is needed [04:47] drupin: im not sure what you are doint casper-rw [04:47] the flash is 8 GB [04:49] xubuntu lubuntu are they minimalist install? [04:49] drupin: not really... but i wouldnt expect ubuntustudio to fit in 4gb's [04:49] i made it fit back in ubuntustudio 9.10, but i stripped a lot out [04:49] installer told me it needs min 3.7 GB.. [04:50] but then it installed in the 4 GB [04:50] drupin: i would just install the OS to the stick [04:50] just one partition [04:50] no two partition [04:51] i wouldnt have casper.. or persistence..i would just take a USB stick, plug it inthe sie of the box and install to it [04:51] drupin: i would go with the defaults.. probably just one big one and a swap and all that [04:51] swap was freeing my OS before [04:51] drupin: if i didnt want the swap, id wipe it out, but id get a stick booting... and it would be booting 15 minutes from now [04:51] so i had removed that [04:52] ok [04:52] let me try once [04:52] and i'd go from there, with a booting persitent USB stick [04:52] i rarely use swap anyways [05:06] ok brb i did boot repair [05:06] let me see if it did magic [05:06] it thoug told me the space on the drive is less [09:18] Hey roomies :) === Presonus_Probs is now known as RazorWire [11:23] Hello. Xubuntu 12.04 here, unable to use XMIDI1x1 USB-MIDI adapter in MIDI program ran under WINE. aconnect fails to run properly even though it is already installed. Any help? [12:15] sticky1: are you sure all ports are available? [12:16] How does aconnect fail? [12:16] which ones? [12:16] let me make a paste for you [12:16] The alsa midi ports you are attempting to connect to each other [13:34] How come ubuntustdio does not support multiple monitors [13:35] kroniksenvy: ubuntustudio is ubuntu [13:35] ubuntu and ubuntustudio both support mulitiple monitors [13:35] I should correct my self it does not allow me to extend my desktop it just gives me dual desktop on both monitors [13:35] ubuntustudio is quite a bit like xubuntu, so i would search for how to configure dual monitors in XFCE or xubuntu [13:36] kroniksenvy, I think it is best to ask in #xubuntu since that this is also a Xubuntu thing;) [13:36] Hi holstein! [13:36] i use arandr, which AFAIK, is the main too now in xubuntu [13:36] kroniksenvy: try arandr and if that doesnt give what you are looking for, let us know [13:38] kroniksenvy, you need to use both arandr and the the display setting to make it work from boot to boot [13:38] len-dt: do we or xubuntu have a doc on that?.. i didnt set it up persistently yet [13:38] arandr (or xrandr) to set it up and the display settings to save it [13:39] ye i got it working now [13:39] arandr [13:39] did it [13:39] :) [13:39] now i just need to remove this bottom popup bar [13:39] Ya, but when you reboot it will disapear and you will need to reset it. [13:39] oke [13:40] kroniksenvy: panel.. you can remove that panel [13:40] if you go into the display settings and make any change... mirror the monitor where the settings window isn;t and then back again it will save the setting for next login [13:40] bare with me i just started with linux yesterday i bought a new notebook and ubuntu studio seemed right for my work : ) [13:41] Oh why you need Ubuntu Studio then kroniksenvy if you just started with Linux? [13:42] kroniksenvy, the thing to remember is that the displays need to be plugged in and powered before booting or X will reconfigure to single and and resave that. [13:42] smartboyhw: i was looking around distribuions basically i wrote top distros and # was ubuntu and underneed were distrost that came from ubuntu [13:42] i picked studio because it seemed setup for graphic design [13:42] len-dt: thanks will note that [13:43] kroniksenvy, oh you want graphic design:) That's good:) [13:45] kroniksenvy, we would be happy to hear your comments on how Studio works for you and how we could improve it. [13:46] ... maybe after you have tried it a while... [13:46] will do [13:46] :) [13:48] So far i'm pretty happy with speed & response, i like the clean UI and configuration was pretty strait forward and i'm even happer now that all 3 screens are runing : ) [13:48] Good:) [13:48] but ill give feedback as i use it during few projects [13:49] kroniksenvy, please do:) [14:58] does anyone here work with ruby on rails ? === kroniksenvy is now known as wiickeed [15:00] wiickeed, who? [15:00] huh ? [15:02] Ruby on rails. what IS that? [15:24] wiickeed: I use it for a redmine install [15:24] But, seems like more of a web server related Q [21:13] how can i remove a non working icon from the left top start menu in settings [21:13] holstein: i did it and finally fresh in the thumb drive [21:15] drupin, which one isn't working? [21:16] i tried to install the java 7 via some non working PPA [21:16] later found its not supported [21:16] all files i removed [21:16] only this two icons are there [21:17] in settings [21:26] len-dt: [23:29] drupin: i would purge whatever you installed from that ppa, and purge the ppa [23:29] !java [23:29] To just use java you need a "Java Runtime Environment" (JRE) and/or a browser plugin. If that is not sufficient you will need a "Java Development Kit" (JDK) aka "Software Development Kit" (SDK). Please see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Java about how to install one of three current implementations. [23:29] i would refer to that [23:30] ya i got from there [23:30] AFAIK, alacarte will work for editing the menu in XFCE [23:30] but the putge is done [23:30] purge* [23:30] but still the two java icons there [23:31] drupin: just get rid of one [23:31] where i find them but? [23:31] drupin: AFAIK, alacart works to edit the menu [23:32] install alacart? [23:32] drupin: i would research what it is.. see if you think it will work for you, and choose if you 'd like to install it [23:32] http://wiki.xfce.org/howto/customize-menu [23:32] ok holstein [23:51] drupin, sorry I vanished... [23:52] its fine len-dt .. [23:52] There is probably a *.desktop file floating around. [23:52] i also took break and was installing something else [23:52] yes [23:52] They normally reside in /usr/share/applications/ [23:53] If you use thunar or nautilus to look for it, you should be able to see which one it is by the icon. [23:56] The name with it will not be the file name. I don't know if you can delete it or not though... I guess if you run nautilus with pkexec or gksudo [23:59] alacarte will work fine too. But will only fix the one user, any new user would still have the problem menu item.
