tumbleweed#topic RC bugs in Ubuntu16:12
=== meetingology changed the topic of #ubuntu-meeting to: Ubuntu Meeting Grounds | Calendar/Scheduled meetings: http://fridge.ubuntu.com/calendar | Logs: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MeetingLogs | Meetingology documentation: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/meetingology | Weekly MOTU Meeting Meeting | Current topic: RC bugs in Ubuntu
tumbleweedmicahg: all yours16:12
tumbleweed(the bugs too, if you want)16:12
micahgwe have a new wiki page explaining RC bug targeting16:13
micahg#link https://wiki.ubuntu.com/RCBugTargetting16:13
xnoxtumbleweed: yes. I have updates =)16:13
micahgso, while in the past we've tried to keep up with RC bugs in Debian, we have our own as well that should be addressed16:14
xnoxtumbleweed: poke me, when we can come back to that topic.16:14
micahgonce the RC bugs are triaged by the release team, if they're targeted, they end up on this report16:14
micahg#link http://reports.qa.ubuntu.com/reports/rls-mgr/rls-q-tracking-bug-tasks.html16:14
micahgthere's a universe section there that we should keep an eye on16:14
tumbleweedindeed, we should16:15
micahgalso, I've heard that some bugs have ended up on the wrong list and been marked rls-q-notfixing, we should probably review the bugs with that tag for any relevant universe bugs and make sure they're triaged appropriately16:15
micahgwe should also think about if we want to drop packages with outstanding RC bugs before release (or try to SRU them shortly thereafter)16:16
micahgwith a more active backports team now, dropped packages seem like less of an issue16:16
tumbleweedI don't think there's much point in dropping packages until we start using that a lot more actively16:16
tumbleweedotherwise it penalizes packages that have people paying attention to them16:17
micahgwell, ideally, we'd try to fix the issues16:17
tumbleweedso we should add reviewing that list as a standing agenda item16:17
tumbleweed(and with my release team hat on, I should pay slightly more attention to bug targetting)16:18
micahgI had a WI to write criteria for dropping packages from multiverse/universe, I think it should be similar to Debian, RC bug open for 6 mo w/no attention (and I would think a dead/inactive upstream)16:18
tumbleweedI can add something looking for these rc tagged bugs to http://people.ubuntuwire.org/~stefanor/ubuntu-neglected-packages/16:19
micahgthat's the testing drop criteria AIUI, but since we have no equivalent of unstable where packages can hide and not be released, I think we're forced to drop16:19
micahgwell, RC is targeted + High/Critical importance16:20
jtaylordropping will not really help for upgrades16:20
jtaylorso we still are likely to get complaints about the removed packages16:20
micahgjtaylor: true, people are stuck with the old version of the package, but if it gets fixed later and backported, they could get an upgrade16:20
tumbleweedI thought the upgrader removed removed packages?16:20
micahgit offers to16:20
tumbleweeddone with this topic?16:23
micahgyeah, I think so16:23
tumbleweed#topic Killing off sqlite 2 (src:sqlite)16:23
=== meetingology changed the topic of #ubuntu-meeting to: Ubuntu Meeting Grounds | Calendar/Scheduled meetings: http://fridge.ubuntu.com/calendar | Logs: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MeetingLogs | Meetingology documentation: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/meetingology | Weekly MOTU Meeting Meeting | Current topic: Killing off sqlite 2 (src:sqlite)
tumbleweedxnox:16:23
xnoxyeah. About GPE - it's a GTK based desktop envrionment target at small-screen device, e.g. phones.16:24
xnoxit's quite dated and on life support.16:24
tumbleweedbut on enough life support that people want it in Debian?16:24
xnoxafter talking to upstream, they ported it from GTK+ 2 -> 3 and Sqlite 2 -> 316:24
tumbleweedoh, that sounds fairly alive16:25
xnoxvery rapidly. After like years on inactivity....16:25
xnoxmaybe just waiting for a kick =)16:25
xnoxit has popcon 016:25
tumbleweedstill, we might have to wait a while for a new upstream release with these ports?16:25
xnoxgtk3/sqlite3 is not release nor fully working yet.16:25
micahgawesome, can we get Debian to update?16:25
micahgoh :*16:25
jtaylorwe could drop just drop it, it can come back later16:26
tumbleweedbut there's still more to drop before sqlite can go, right?16:26
jtaylorassumings its the only sqlite2 blocker16:26
xnoxDebian maintainer said in private mail that killing sqlite2 is a bit pointless, ubuntu is not embedding friendly anyway and generally doesn't mind if ubuntu drops GPE and will not recommend upstream to port to newer API/ABI16:26
tumbleweedso, we can just not block on gpe16:27
xnoxi would like to recommend dropping those 14 package (gpe related)16:27
micahgyeah, I'd be for that if they're the last bastions of sqlite2 in the archive16:28
xnoxhttps://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Ak2xRmRUt6S4dHZfZWdhbVdiMl9HbWRHazNfOFM1aWc16:28
xnoxI started marking stuff.16:28
xnoxgambas2/3 is a programming language with sqlite2&3 binding -> drop sqlite2 bindings16:28
xnox(packages)16:29
xnoxthe new asterisk has all modules ported to sqlite3, so we'd just drop sqlite2 modules.16:29
micahgxnox: are there concerns with upgrades losing data or are the plugins smart enough to handle that?16:30
xnoxthat leaves chasing up csync2, kannel, qof, qsf, sqliteodbs and teleport (6)16:30
xnoxmicahg: plugins are not smart enough. Ideally people should not have been using sqlite2 plugins, but obviously if it's an old install they just carry on.16:30
xnoxit's a shame that sqlite3 cannot read/convert sqlite2 databases, so my "upgrade plan" is16:30
xnoxto keep sqlite2 for an extra release after we drop dependencies.16:31
xnoxthat will make LTS -> LTS upgrade 'interesting'16:31
xnoxwe probably should start dropping agressivly. then people will get the hint that they need to migrate using tools in precise16:32
xnoxanybody knows how the rest of the world migrated from sqlite2 -> 3?16:34
tumbleweedno idea :/16:34
micahgprobably happened years ago :-/16:35
tumbleweedbefore sqlite was really popular16:35
micahgLast sqlite2 release was Dec 200516:35
tumbleweedso, I can't see us dropping everything any time soon16:38
tumbleweedbut we could start disabling sqlite2 modules16:38
debfxmicahg: even fedora still ships sqlite216:38
micahghrm, I guess we could wait one more release at this point, but I think asterisk would be a prime place to start dropping support for sqlite2 since it's already got its own security issues16:40
tumbleweedno objection from me16:41
tumbleweedshall we move on?16:41

tumbleweedI'm seeing quite a bit of activity on the missing homepages16:46
tumbleweeddon't know if we are hooking anyone, though16:46
jtaylorI recently proposed on -devel to add syncs/merges from wheezy to the list of easy fixes16:47
micahgthey're not all necessarily easy16:47
jtaylormost of the syncs are16:48
tumbleweedit's certainly something that new developers should learn16:49
tumbleweedbut it's going to be fairly far down the line16:49
tumbleweedreviewing merges can be really hard (when nobody has cared about them for years)16:50
jtaylorwe can do some prefiltering for new contributers16:51
jtaylorlist merges where the versions are not far appart16:51
jtayloror no mom conflicts16:51
tumbleweedand that have a linked bug, fixed in debian?16:51
jtayloran unblock already implies a fixed bug in most cases16:51
tumbleweedthat's a temporary thing until wheezy releases16:52
jtayloryes but why not use this good oportunity?16:52
tumbleweedoh, sure16:52

pleia2we did a catch-up in August, so this is anyone who didn't get a chance to talk to us last time, or has follow-up items they want to bring to our attention :)17:14
pleia2since our last meeting there were a couple changes to the Membership wiki pages in an attempt to clarify requirements, but I think we came to the conclusion last time that the real problem was people not reading the pages at all before applying17:15

cjohnstonHello and welcome to the Ubuntu Membership Review Board meeting for 20 September 2012. The wiki page for the Review Boards are available here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Membership/Boards22:02
cjohnstonWe will attempt to get through all of the applicants that have added themselves to that list before today's meeting. If we are unable to make it through the entire list due to time constraints, then at the next meeting we will pick up where we left off22:03
cjohnstonThe format for the meeting is as follows: We will go through the list of applicants one by one, by date of application (FIFO).22:03
cjohnstonEach applicant should introduce themselves (1-5 sentences) and provide links to their Ubuntu Wiki page. After the introduction the members of the Membership Review Board will review the pages and, if needed, ask the applicant further questions.22:03
s-foxcjohnston,  add IdleOne  to voters :)22:04
cjohnstonDuring this time it is encouraged for other members of the community to show their support for the applicant. Do not be alarmed if the members of the Membership Review Board are quiet during this time; they are most likely reading wiki/launchpad/forum/other pages and deciding how they are going to vote.22:04

IdleOneuros1: I am curious to know how come yours and bojce wiki page are almost identical, could you explain this?22:20
uros1for all bojce is coordinator of Serbian LoCo22:21
uros1we do work together22:21
hggdhis there anybody else in the room that can vouch for uros1 and bojce?22:22
uros1why is that any problem?22:22
IdleOneuros1: not a problem, just very uncommon22:23
uros1we are running team for four ears22:23
uros1two reapprovalls,22:23
IdleOnereapprovals? you mean you were Ubuntu member before?22:24
uros1no for LoCo team reapproval22:24
cjohnstonmy concern is that the pages look more like a team reapproval page than a membership page.. I want to see what each person has done, and the almost exact copy is a little too close for my comfort, especially when the only other person to speak on your behalf is the person who is also up for membership.22:24
s-foxhow many people are in the loco that regularly attend  ?22:25
uros1where, on presentations or in meetings?22:25
s-foxboth :)22:26
uros1on presentations average nomber is, about 5022:26
uros1in regular meetings on irc mabe 5 to 10 top22:26
uros1*mabe22:26
s-foxokay, does this group know you are applying for ubuntu membership /22:26
s-fox?22:26
uros1yes shure its not secret22:27
s-foxdid you ask them to support your application with comments on your wiki ?22:28
uros1no missed that part, sorry22:28
s-foxokay,  do you think you could see about that done for the next meeting? :)22:29
uros1what i think is: no problems to any kind of support from serbia team, we are one of the best europian teams22:30
uros1in small country we managed almost 5000 members and we work hard and god22:30
IdleOneI agree with s-fox. I would like to see testimonials from other members of the LoCo and also from current Ubuntu members.22:30
uros1I don`t se there is  a one small problem with testemonials what so ever22:31
uros1okay no problem22:31
uros1still maybe one, burt this is my problem22:32
hggdhuros1: the whole thing is we use the testimonials as an independent confirmation of the claims22:32
uros1yea, sure22:32
hggdhI tried to follow the pictures linked in the wiki, but they have no names associated22:33
hggdhand there is no picture of you in the wiki/LP...22:33
uros1my picture?22:33
uros1moment please22:34
hggdhuros1: what I was trying to do was match you with the pics. Now it is too late, I think22:34
uros1http://www.flickr.com/photos/ubuntu-srbija/7989009305/in/photostream22:35
uros1ok i see22:36
uros1so no problems22:36
uros1lets vote and reject me22:36
hggdhwe do not want to reject you. I propose we do *not* vote, and give you time to get the testimonials22:37
s-fox+1 hd22:37

s-foxg22:37
s-fox+1 hggdh22:37
cjohnstonuros1, and bojce... It looks like you two both do great work, but we are having a couple of problems as a board with being able to determine this. As we have discussed, it would be nice if both of you could get testimonials from people in your LoCo and also from others who are Ubuntu Members so that we have a little more to go off of. It would also be nice if you could each make some changes to your pages so that 22:37
bojceok, no problem22:38
cjohnstonWe do not want to vote on either of you today, in hopes that you will take the time prior to the next meeting to make a few small improvements to your applications, and then we will have a better picture of who you are and ask you to each reapply for the next meeting.22:38
cjohnstonuros1 or bojce, do you have any other questions for us?22:39
uros1i think this is not fair, buit thats me22:39
hggdhuros1, bojce: please get some testimonials (and tags some names in the photos). The wikis are fantastic, but we *NEED* to have confirmation22:40
hggdhuros1: I guarantee you I want, with all my heart, to approve you22:41
cjohnstonuros1: I didn't make it on my first application either.. the issue is that none of us know you, so it is very helpful to us to have others say things about you and the work that you do in order for us to gain insight into the things that we do not know.22:41
uros1Well I`m not stay awake to just tell you a story22:42
uros1so okay no problem22:42
uros1stay cool22:42
cjohnstonAlso, I'm not sure if the 12:00 utc board may be a better time fit for you?22:42
uros1working hour22:43
cjohnstonI wondered if that was the case22:43
hggdhuros1: we are not going to vote now on you and bojce. We will keep you in the calendar for next meeting (in two weeks)22:43
uros1so let`s go to sleep, have god night or whatever time is22:44
hggdhuros1: you too. Sorry for this, but we need confirmations22:44
bojceok, see you in 2 weeks22:45
hggdhbojce: as explained above, we are not going to vote on your application. Do you have any comments?22:45
hggdhheh22:45
bojceno, it`s ok...22:45
cjohnstonThanks to those who came, and congrats to AnasEmad22:46
