XATRIXis it possible to install and use "yum" instead of apt-get ?12:14
marky_boihi people , having issues getting VBoxClient to run at startup, where would be best to start ?12:15
recon_tvXATRIX: I don't think so, probably break loads of things. the packet manager would be a core app12:18
recon_tvXATRIX: why would you want to change it?12:23
marky_boi@ dr_willis sent a PM12:24
XATRIXrecon_tv, just familliar to yum12:29
XATRIXwas curious is is possible to use it12:29
recon_tvXATRIX: well it's pretty easy to use apt-get, if you have questions just ask here :)12:30
recon_tvmarkky_boi: have a look at http://www.linuxhomeserverguide.com/server-config/phpVirtualBox.php , but since you dont know how to wait I guess you'll miss this lol12:34
recon_tvXATRIX: just remember that apt-get is .deb based and yun is .rpm based , they dont mix12:36
jrmyI'm not able to get to my login screen13:38
jrmygood thing I know about irssi13:38
holsteinso, you can login just fine then... what about starting x from the command line? do you get any errors?13:39
jrmyI'd copy my boot screen but I have no idea how13:39
jrmyit does fail on one of them13:39
jrmydon't know how to start x13:39
jrmyand I thought it was called xorg13:39
holsteinhttp://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/precise/man1/startx.1.html13:40
jrmyhow do you load a webpage without a gui?13:41
jrmybut no it does not boot properly13:41
recon_tvjrmy: just type startx on the commandline13:41
holsteinjrmy: well, you could do it in a curses web browser.. but you could also ask 'how do i start x' and i would say .. type startx13:41
jrmyit trys and goes to tty1.. instead of the login screen13:42
holsteinyou'll be interested in the errors after you type "startx" and hit enter13:42
recon_tvjrmy have you changed anything recently, did it work before?13:42
holsteini usually try booting the last kernel that worked well, if this is after a system upgrade13:43
recon_tvyep, was a kernel update yesterday13:43
jrmythat made me freeze13:44
jrmybut yes it would appear that it isn'r working13:45
holsteinjrmy: startx? or the earlier kernel?13:45
jrmyI think the time I restarted my computer mid boot 'cause the problem13:45
holsteinjrmy: it being, startx to start the gui isnt working?13:45
jrmythis is what is crashing13:45
jrmycaused*13:46
jrmyyes x is crashing for some reason13:46
recon_tvjrmy: I would be surprised if stopping a boot would cause these problems13:46
jrmykind of a noob here...13:46
recon_tvjrmy: I take it you could log in yesterday?13:46
jrmyI hit my restart button on my case13:46
jrmyhard reset*13:46
holsteini would do an fsck if i thought forcing rebooting had damaged the filesystem13:47
jrmylast time wa the last time I could login no prob13:47
holsteinhttp://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1980351 suggests sudo touch /forcefsck to get fsck on reboot13:47
recon_tvjrmy: did you install updates ?13:47
jrmyyeah recently13:47
recon_tvjrmy: do you know if you use property video drivers?13:48
jrmyyes13:48
jrmywhich work13:48
holsteinan upgrade could have broken that... and you could try the last kerne easy enough jrmy13:48
recon_tvjrmy: I guess that new kernel + property video driver = broken login13:48
jrmyperhaps13:48
holsteini would just boot the last kernel and confirm that in a few seconds13:49
jrmybut without a real diagnostic we won't know what the problem is13:49
jrmyhow do I do this anyways?13:49
holsteinjrmy: that would be quite diagnostic.. reboot with the older kernel.. if it boots, you know its likely the kernel upgrade13:49
holsteinjrmy: this? boot the older kernel?13:49
jrmyI did have the problem before hand though13:50
jrmybut I leave my computer on almost all the time13:50
jrmyso.. I do what now?13:50
holsteinjrmy: before what?13:51
jrmyI also have a dual boot setup with windows 713:51
recon_tvwhat key gets the boot menu up?13:51
holsteinjrmy: i would boot the older kernel13:51
jrmyis it in the boot menu?13:51
holsteinjrmy: it being the kernel?13:51
jrmyI hope we both assume we're talking about the same thing, that being the kernel13:52
holsteinjrmy: i would like to assume nothing13:52
holsteinjrmy: i want to test and know waht "it" is..13:52
holsteinthe grub menu will show the kernels.. you will see the older ones under the "previous" entry listed there13:53
jrmythen "it" is nothing based on that statement as I'm only referring to what you might be talking about13:53
holsteinyou should see the lates kernel.. and the recovery version under that.. then, right under that you'll see "previous"13:53
holsteinyou'll find the last kernel that worked there13:53
jrmyok13:53
jrmybrb13:54
recon_tvjrmy: any if it does work, change back to the standard drivers13:54
jrmyguess the new kernel is incompatible13:58
recon_tvjrmy: switch back to the standard video drivers would be a start13:58
recon_tvjrmy: I assume you got to login with the older kernel13:59
jrmyyes13:59
jrmyhow do I use default drivers?13:59
jrmynot that I want to...13:59
jrmyI much rather need them to play minecraft14:00
recon_tvjrmy: Menu-> settings -> additional drivers14:01
jrmyhah, ya know, if I knew how to revert to the old drivers I could of saved reinstalling my os all those times14:01
jrmyis there perhaps updated drivers or does it always update?14:02
jrmyI know amd updates ccc everynow and then14:03
jrmywell catalyst rather14:03
recon_tvjrmy: maybe, I'd set it to the standard ones first and try reboot just to make sure they are working, if that works you could try the property drives again14:03
jrmynot sure if you're typoing or not14:04
jrmypropietary14:04
recon_tv:-[14:04
jrmybut anyways, I'll try removing the drivers booting with the updated kernel and reinstalling the drivers14:05
jrmyis there a way to remove them from the shell?14:05
jrmyI'd rather not reinstall again.. that's just idiotic14:05
recon_tvjrmy: one step at a time14:06

jrmyyeah I get half fps without the drivers14:21
jrmyI'd rather play on windows again at this point14:21

recon_tvwhen did you last update your drivers, seems the last Catalyst release was 8/15/201214:22

jrmyprobably a few months ago14:23
jrmymaybe half a year back?14:23
jrmyI set up a dual boot.. and didn't really do anythign with my distro14:23
jrmythought I'd give linux another go. got bored with it.. and I decided to come back as the only game I was playing any more was minecraft. so I figured what was the point of using windows?14:24
jrmybut, once again I get problems left and right14:25
recon_tvjrmy: so what OS do you want to use?14:25
jrmyseems whenever I want to customize things I get problems.. idk mayeb xubuntu isn't the distro for me14:25
jrmylinux14:25
jrmyI'm tired of windows..14:26
recon_tvjrmy: well, when you go custom the learning starts :) the price of freedom14:26
jrmyI just preferred xubuntu because I like using the shell and xfce's shell looks cooler14:27
jrmymore customizable too14:27
jrmyor at least it is on xubuntu14:27
jrmythat and I like the look and feel over gnome14:27
jrmybut road blocks show up as the manpages for ubuntu don't always help me with xubuntu.. I assume it's the enviroment difference14:28
recon_tvjrmy: well the video card problems would have hit in any distro14:28
jrmyor whatever xfce and gnome are called14:28
jrmyabout all I knw with the shell is a little bit on looking at directories, apt-get commands like install, update and upgrade, and how to use nano and irssi14:29
jrmy'bout it14:29
jrmywell I found out how to play nethack with telnet.. but yeah14:30
XATRIXguys, how can i make my set my keyboard layout switch shortcut to ctrl+shift ?14:30
jrmyI think i'll try activating the drivers again.. and if it doesn't work again I'll repeat the last steps up till now.. bbl14:31
XATRIXevery time i have to set it up to ctrl+shift again14:32
XATRIXit automatically set to Alt+shift14:33
recon_tvXATRIX: probably in setting manager somewhere, knowing that it's Alt+Shift as default helps, how do you change it ?14:35
XATRIXi'm changing via "Keyboard layouts" applet on my XFCE Panel14:39
XATRIXBut it always reverts to default (Alt+shift) after i restart14:40
recon_tvXATRIX: have you opened the "keyboard input method" in "system settings", did it install the ibus deamon14:43
jrmyif I wanted to use an older kernel what would be the down sides?14:44
recon_tvjrmy: I'd suggest try installing the latested driver, and checking the does to see if it works with kernel 3.20-3114:44
recon_tvinstalling*/downloading14:44
recon_tvjrmy: http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/linux/Pages/radeon_linux.aspx14:45
XATRIXyes it wants to14:45
XATRIXbut not installed yet14:45
recon_tvXATRIX: so let it14:45
jrmya link isn't very useful atm.. I'm currently in the test of the new kernel with the propietary drivers.. which it did not work14:46
recon_tvXATRIX: actually I just guessing here, but I think this is the answer14:46
jarnosFirefox is soo slow in my computer. X takes a lot of CPU in normal use.14:46
recon_tvjrmy: well you'll have to use the standard driver till you find a update that works14:47
jarnosIn 11.04 chromium used to work fast, but in later releases it keeps crashing.14:47
recon_tvjrmy: so check what version of catalyst you got now again the latest version14:48
jarnosWhat is wrong? Is my hardware unsupported?14:48

recon_tvXATRIX: did that help any?14:50
jrmyrecon_tv: how do I check with a command?14:50

recon_tvbricot: have you considered using nautilus till the bug gets fixed?16:07
bricotYes I do. I'm also successful to do: sudo umount /home/bricot/.gvfs16:13
bricotBut the problem is not all my users are able to do that.16:14
bricotThis bug seems to be over a year old. That's why I'm asking for a better workaround, or better, a solution for maybe 12.10.16:16
recon_tvbricot: I hear you, but the bug only just got confirmed status. bit passed me though. I was wary of encrypted home folders even given my high level of paranoia :)16:20
recon_tvbricot: car you reproduce it ?16:20
recon_tvcar/can*16:20
bricotAll I can say at the moment is that it happens from time to time. So my answer is no unfortunately. I'm not sure what triggers this issue.16:23
recon_tvbricot: try logout and back in again, no reboot16:24
bricotThat didn't help, but unmounting did (following the bug report). I just had to restart Thunar to see my home directory.16:25
recon_tvbricot: I want to see if we can produce the bug on demand, only way a fix is likely if we can reproduce the bug on demand16:26
bricotrecon_tv: I agree.16:26
recon_tvbricot: the trigger described is to logout to gdm and back in again, does that reproduce the bug?16:30
bricotrecon_tv: I'll leave know and try it out. Unfortunately I'm a Ubuntu convert and switched back to lightdm, because I don't like gdm. But I have another netbook with gdm in place. I'll be back soon.16:32
recon_tvbricot: well, just try it on the system that you having the issue on, I only said gdm because thats what the report said16:33
bricotrecon_tv: I can reproduce that bug: every *second* login on that machine with the encrypted home (lightdm, 64-bit). My netbook does not show this bug (Plain Xubuntu with gdm, no encrypted home, 32-bit). Both 12.04.16:43
recon_tvbricot: on the machine you can reproduce it on, is the home dir on a different partition to the root16:44
bricotrecon_tv: no.16:45
recon_tvbricot: well, now that you can reproduce it I suggest you add your findings to the bug report with all the software and version numbers etc , then try get some interest from the ubuntu+1 and xubuntu+1 channels.16:48
bricotrecon_tv: ok, I'll try.16:49

GimpetteTwo fold question, please:  I know how to install fonts to Gimp.  What I don't know is where the gazillion and half system (?) fonts that show up on my Gimp font list came from or how to go about safely removing them; if not from the system at least from my list of fonts in Gimp.  I don't want to have to scroll through a few hundred fonts I don't want in order to get to the ones I do.  Any suggestions?  Thanks!19:06
knomeGimpette, it should be safe to remove if you don't need them, eg. if they're not used in the interface, or you don't need other than western/korean/etc fonts19:08
GimpetteIs there a way that I can just remove them from the Gimp list so that I don't risk screwing something up system-wise?19:09
GimpetteI didn't add any of them myself so I am assuming some interface or something somewhere must want them for them to have gotten on my machine in the first place.19:10
knomehmm, i'm not sure - i afraif not19:10
knomenope, xubuntu has quite a lot of fonts installed by default for convenience for non-western users19:11
GimpetteDo you know of a list anywhere that specifically states which fonts are safe to remove and which aren't?  I know you mentioned some, but I don't know which fonts are used in interfaces and which aren't.19:13
knomeGimpette, see apps -> settings -> settings manager -> appearance -> tab fonts19:22
knomeand ... settings manager -> window manager -> tab style (title font)19:23
knomethose are the ones you don't want to remove19:23
knomeafaik others are safe to remove19:23
knomewell, you probably don't want to remove all serif fonts, all monospace fonts etc..., but there's no reason why you couldn't remove any19:24
knomeand if something seems to break, you can always revert and reintroduce the fonts you need19:24
GimpetteOk, those are set to sans and sans bold respectively.  There is a font manager somewhere for easy removal, isn't there?19:37
knomeno, at least not installed by default19:39
knomeoh, and you don't want to remove the default terminal font either.19:39
GimpetteOk, thanks much for the help.  I see that I previously installed Fontmatrix but it looked rather too complicated for the time I had available to devote to figuring it out so I just left it.  I guess I'll just have to knuckle down and look at it again.  Thanks.19:42
GimpetteWhere can I find out which font is the default for the terminal, do you know?19:42
MarzataGimpette: we use Ubuntu Mono, coz renders zero and O differently19:57
Gimpette@Marzata:  Thanks, I'm fine with how everything is rendering now; I'd just like to take out the fonts I won't use in design projects without breaking anything.  Looking into a different font manager now.  This shouldn't be this complicated, I wonder why there isn't a simple one for idiots installed by default.  :)20:03
knomeMarzata, who we?20:07
knomeGimpette, right-click terminal -> preferences -> tab appearance to check out the terminal font you are using20:08
GimpetteI don't have a preferences option when right clicking; only properties and tab appearance isn't there.  Maybe I'm not in the right place.  Will look some more.20:10
knomeGimpette, are you using xfce4-terminal?20:10
DerpianHey, I try to change my full name in Users and Groups under System and it does not change at all20:10
GimpetteFound it!  Thanks!20:10
knomeGimpette, np20:10
GimpetteHave been trying out Font Manager and it appears to easily allow for reactivation so I'm going to try clearing that font list out some; thanks again!20:12
DerpianFixed it, ran sudo usermod -c "NAME IN THE QUOTES" username20:17

GridCubeeduardo, you are trying to pass an empty space22:29
erkan^oesp22:30
