TransX2I have an old Athlon XP Palemino based PC with an IDE HDD and some mobo I can't identify. I'm trying to install Lubuntu, I go through the setup and it starts copying files and then the install window goes away and it just sits at the desktop and the mouse indefinitely spins.03:56
TransX2So I end up restarting it and it gets stuck at "Searching for  boot recors from IDE 0...OK"03:56
TransX2and never boots into Lubuntu03:56
TransX2I've tryed resetting the BIOS and reinstalling multiple times03:57
TransX2Any suggestions?03:59
bioterrorTransX2, try using the Alternate CD?04:47

danno_can anyone tell me why programs that are running would suddenly stop appearing in the taskbar?15:58
holsteindanno_: maybe you are on a diffrent workspace? the panel crashed? the applet showing running applicatios crashed?16:00
holsteinwhat programs? how suddenly?16:00
danno_they were showing in the taskbar until a few hours ago. i can still alt-tab between the running tasks but they dont show in the taskbar any more16:01
holsteindanno_: and you are on the same workspace?16:01
danno_as far as i know16:02
holsteini believe the default behavior of the panel applet is to show whats running on the current workspace16:02
holsteindanno_: you can hit control and alt and the left/right arrow keys and see where you are16:02
holsteinone thing i do is have the applet show applications from all workspaces16:02
danno_yeah im definitley on the right workspace16:03
holsteindanno_: what applications?16:03
danno_any. it doesnt matter what i run, it will not show in the taskbar16:03
holsteindanno_: maybe you have just removed the applet that shows them16:04
holsteindanno_: them *never* showing is quite diffent than them disappearing.. which do you think is the case?16:04
danno_its possible as im by no means a power user. how would i replace it if i have16:04
holsteindanno_: you can right click on the panel and add things back.. you can login as guest and see what is what.. or you can always boot a live cd and play around adding and removing things without worrying about breaking functionality16:05
danno_i dont know what to add in to correct this though. its quite likely my own fault but i havent a clue how i did it16:12
holsteindanno_: sure.. i typically just add a panel and play around adding everything and learning what is what.. or i login as either the guest user or a new user i create for learning purposes16:13
holsteinor, i fire up the live CD and play around removing and adding things to the panel16:13
holsteinby one of these methods i learn what it is that i want to have and the functionality i want16:13
danno_i realise this might be a hacks way of doing it but would simply deleting my user account and creating a new one correct this?16:14
holsteindanno_: you can just remove things from your /home directory relating to the configuration of the panel16:15
holsteindanno_: i wouldnt remove the user account you are using16:15
holsteindanno_: i would literally just make a panel.. add things and learn what they do16:15
holsteindanno_: i would tell you if i had lxpanel runing in front of me, but i dont16:16
holsteindanno_: i assure you it'll be something like "application list" or "switcher" something somewhat obvious16:16
holsteini would like to go on record as saying again... i wouldnd remove the user account.. just config files in the /home directory that i would have backed up somewhere16:17
holsteinwoudnt*. like, i wouldnt not remove the user account16:17
fredmatteraAfternoon16:59
fredmatteraI am having a problem with my mouse curser freezing after my system is running for a short time.17:00
holsteinfredmattera: i would just try some different kernels.. even with live CD's17:02
fredmatteraI have to admit this is the first time this has happened.17:03
fredmatteraI used the live CD17:03
fredmatteraplus i did the install prior and had the same problem17:04
holsteinfredmattera: it'll just be a matter of troubleshooting.. i would try to get to tty and see if the machine is locked up or just the mouse17:05
holsteini would try some USB hardware mouse17:05
holsteini would try different kernels17:05
fredmatteraran it from a usb key and a portable drive and had the same problem on both17:05
holsteinfredmattera: sure, and thats the same kernel that you installed, which makes sense, but you dont konw what is locked, up correct?17:05
holsteinfredmattera: can you get to TTY?17:05
fredmatteratried the usb mouse and built in mouse pad17:05
holsteinfredmattera: and?.. are both locked up?17:06
fredmatterayes bothtty17:06
fredmatteraboth17:06
holsteinif the system is locked up, then its not likely the mouse then.. it could be *anything*17:06
holsteinfredmattera: i would try to get to TTY17:06
fredmatteratty?17:06
holstein!tty17:06
ubottuTo get to the TTY terminals 1-6, use the keystroke ctrl + alt + F1-F6 respectively (Alt+F7 will get you back to your graphical login).  To change the resolution for your TTY, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ChangeTTYResolution.17:06
holsteinif you can get to a TTY, then the machine is not locked up17:07
fredmatteraoh i see17:07
holsteinif you cant, then its likely the machine is locked up, in which case, you can stop saying "the cursor is locked up"17:07
holsteinyou can say "the machine is locked up" and you dont know what it is17:07
fredmatteratrue17:07
holsteinthe latter scanario can have *nothing* to do with the mouse in any way17:08
fredmatterai noticed my torrent download froze also17:08
holsteinfredmattera: i would just do *nothing*17:08
holsteinlet the machine run overnight17:08
holsteinmaybe run top in a terminal17:08
holsteinthen, if its when you are running that torrent application, that could be it17:08
holsteinwhen/if it locks, try TTY17:08
fredmatterawell its a toshiba netbook NB20517:08
fredmatterak17:09
fredmatteradid it whn i ran the torrent application and at another time when i was using the update manager17:09
holsteinfredmattera: still, not enough information to go on for me.. unless you tried TTY17:10
wxldoes it lock up or does the mouse not respond?17:10
holsteinsometimes if im expecting issues, i'll run ssh on the machine, so i can log in17:10
holsteinif you can ssh in, then its likely just the mouse not responding... otherwise, its something more serious17:11
fredmatterathanks for the info on the tty sounds promising also. will also try the ssh if i dont resolve it.17:11
holsteinyou can poke around in a system log or two as well, but i would just wait til it happens again17:11
wxl↑ i ask because i occassionally get a malfunctioning trackpad upon high cpu usage on my eepc netbook and switching from tty and back fixes it17:11
holsteinif its something that is ocking up the machine, and im worried about breaking the hard drive, i might trouble shoot using a live CD17:12
holsteinlocking*17:12
holsteincan be more trouble than its worth getting to the hard drive in those netbooks though17:12
fredmatterahaha17:12
holsteini like to unplug hard drives though when i know im going to be forcing the power off17:13
fredmatteraI have run lubuntu, ubuntu arch linux and a ton of others17:13
holsteinlubuntu *is* ubuntu17:13
fredmatterayes i know17:13
fredmatterai run it because i dont like the full version of ubuntu. darn window or menu takes up the screen and cant play full screen games17:14
fredmatterathat menu that comes up usually on the left side of the screen17:17
fredmatterathanks for eveyones input17:19
no_gravityHello! Under Ubuntu I was able to navigate the main menu with keys. For example I opened the internet submenu. Is it possible to make this work under lubuntu?19:51
bioterrorwhat do you mean19:53
bioterroryou mean this "unity" menu19:53
bioterror+19:53
bioterror?19:53
no_gravitybioterror: no, i never used unity. i hate it.19:53
no_gravitybioterror: i mean ubuntu 10.19:53
bioterrorso you mean this "start" kind of menu19:54
bioterrorapplications19:54
no_gravitybioterror: yes, i think so. it opens up when i hit ALT+F119:54
no_gravity/set show_nickmode_empty off19:54
bioterrorthat's a good command19:54
bioterrorwas it alt+esc or what in lubuntu19:55
bioterroror was it ctrl+f1 :-)19:55
no_gravitybioterror: what?19:55
no_gravitybioterror: in lubuntu its also ALT+F119:55
bioterrorso what you are after then?19:56
no_gravitybioterror: after i opened the menu, i want to navigate it with keys. for example "ic" would open chrome because "i" brings you to the "internet" submenu and "c" starts chrome. thats how it worked in ubuntu 10.19:57
bioterrornow you have to use arrow keys19:57
no_gravitybioterror: which is so much slower19:58
bioterrorthat's why I use alt+f2 and type what ever I need19:58
no_gravitybioterror: thats also much slower19:59
no_gravitybioterror: and you have to remember everything19:59
bioterror1st world problems19:59
no_gravitybioterror: so the ubuntu 10 menu was part of gnome and i cannot get it under lubuntu?20:00
bioterrorno you do not get it under lubuntu20:00
bioterrorI will guide you to use Mate desktop then20:00
bioterrorit's a fork of gnome 220:00
no_gravitybioterror: never heard of it.20:01
bioterrorit might give you back those precious half seconds you're after20:01
bioterrorhttp://mate-desktop.org/20:01
no_gravitybioterror: thanks. might try it after i finished evaluating lubuntu.20:02
no_gravitybioterror: another thing that makes me crazy is that in the task-bar i cannot place the mouse on the bottom of the screen and click on an application. i have to move the mouse up again a little bit.20:03
no_gravityis there a way to fix that?20:04
bioterrorwell, I'm a tint2 user20:05
no_gravitywhats that?20:05
bioterrortaskbar20:05
no_gravitybioterror: how is it better then the default one?20:06
bioterrorit let's me change window order20:06
no_gravitybioterror: aarrrggghhh... now that you say it, i see that its not possible in lubuntu.20:07
no_gravitycannot live without it.20:07
no_gravityubuntu 10 really was the best os ever. its so sad that its gone.20:07
bioterrorI would really suggest to look OS that supports Mate20:09
bioterrorSalixOS is one of my favourites20:09
bioterrorMint is a huge Mate supporter20:09
* no_gravity goes to download mint20:10
no_gravitybut i have to say that lubuntu really feels snappy. im a bit sad to trash it.20:10
no_gravitybioterror: you use tint2 under lubuntu?20:12
bioterrorsometimes20:12
no_gravityso i would do "apt-get remove lxpanel;apt-get install tint2"?20:13
bioterrorwell, tint2 requires some configurations20:13
bioterrorhttps://launchpad.net/~killeroid/+archive/ppa20:14
no_gravityoh20:14
bioterrorsvn has launcher20:15
bioterrorit's nice20:15
bioterrorbut that's what I like to use20:15
bioterrorthere's own limitations and so on20:15
bioterrorbut if lubuntu feels snappy and some how usable, I would give it a longer shot and ponder if that's for you20:16
bioterroryou might loose some functions, but it will give something back instead then20:16
no_gravityyeah, i will try it for a couple of days20:18
