cdoublejjI enjoy Lubuntu. Lubuntu is what Ubuntu should have been. Lubuntu does a lot of stuff right even the little things like shipping with Chromium instead of firefox. I can sync all my addons and themes by just signing in to chromium.02:57
cdoublejjLXDE is another great choice no tablet based unity stuff, LXDE is whata menu bar should be, simple.02:58
Fersureya02:58
cdoublejjWhen Steam for Linux beta comes i'm definitely gonna try it lubuntu02:59
redderhsI'm glad someone's as happy as I am. I did swap around a lot of the stock applications for my own personal preferences, but lubuntu is great, couldn't see myself using a different distro other than this.02:59
redderhssame here cdoublejj: cant wait for CSGO or CSS support =]02:59
cdoublejjwell i'm not ditching windows, i'm definitely a gamer but, i like using other oses like OSX x86 and linux (Lubuntu)02:59
cdoublejjThe indie humble bundle already comes with linux supported games, iwas suprised to see PPhysconaughts and Rochard on there03:00
redderhsI ditched Windows just a few days ago; never turning back.03:00
cdoublejjthough they may be cop out wine setup thingy03:00
cdoublejjI like windows it does what i want and i know the back end pretty well just not the super advanced stuff and can make it do what i want, i find it just as customizable as linux how ever being so familiar with windows i like breath of fresh air and play with linux03:02
cdoublejjafter seeing Lubuntu i see some advantages over windows specially for people who only use their machines for internet only.03:03
redderhsI only wish I discovered Lubuntu earlier03:05
cdoublejjSo this is interesting i got my new lubuntu install going on real hardware and it locks up after about minute, i know it's not hard lock because i can still work the numlock03:13
cdoublejjdoes it have any known problems with nividia cards or chipsets?03:14
redderhsnot sure, i have a discreet nvidia 550m, but i'm running intel hd3000 as a main03:14
cdoublejjand it's always right after boot03:19
cdoublejjso i reinstalled and updated the installer first and opted to not download updates while installing and it didn't help, it stilll ocks up just after booting on to the desktop04:16
redderhsmaybe you should try posting on the forums04:17
redderhsthat or you could try waiting for someone to come about around here that may have an idea of what you could try04:18
redderhsI hope you do find a solution though.04:23
cdoublejjme to04:27
cdoublejjmight just have to post on the forums04:27
redderhsis your pc one you built yourself?04:27
cdoublejjyeah04:30
redderhsWhat kind of Video Card do you have? make / model?04:30
cdoublejjnvidia BFG GTS250 1gb04:30
cdoublejjhttp://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E1681414319104:31
redderhswhat mobo?04:33
cdoublejjAsus A8N32-SLI Deluxe04:46
redderhsI dont think i've ever had a Linux distro lock up on boot..04:51
redderhsSo i'm kinda at a loss of what to provide, for steps.04:52
cdoublejjwell it locks up just after booting after bringing up the desktop04:52
redderhsIf I was in your shoes and was set in my ways on figuring out why, I'd trial and error by taking out a component; like say the video card and see if that changes anything.04:53
redderhsAnd this wasn't happening with any other linux distros?04:53
holsteinor just force the vesa driver..04:58
holsteinid like to try ALT+F2 or some other tty and see if those are up during that lock as well04:58
cdoublejji wouldn't know the only other os i run is windows 705:07
redderhsalt + f2 would open up a run window05:10
redderhsdoes it do it?05:10
cdoublejjalt + f2? i t was reading ctrl + alt+ f2, i'll give that a try05:52
cdoublejjso i f2ed before it locked up, basically it's a total lock up but, i can still use num locks .... and i just realized i have switch and numlock always works. i'm gonna go ahead and hook the keyboar straigh to the machine and see f it truley hard locks and if it does i'm gonna save bio settings and go back stock settings (no oc) and see how that goes06:20
cdoublejji tried lowering my clocks already and that didn't help i'll see how settingthem stock goes , i'm gonna guess not same thing, if so then i reinstall on stock clocks and see how that goes06:21
cdoublejjtoo bad i don't any thing about retrieving logs06:21
cdoublejjlive boot runs fine oced or otherwise06:31
cdoublejjwhats the deal it has to be some program or driver that once it loads locks the whole system06:31
cdoublejjfor the heck of it i'm gonna un hook the network cable and install that way06:58
cdoublejjI figured out the cause of my locks ups09:09

wibenHi, I'm trying to boot Lubuntu 12.04 from live usb on Packard Bell DotS2 Netbook. I've checked the usb stick on 2 other computers, it works fine. However on the netbook it blocks the boot with some information message about, Intel PineVIEW and Disassembly Prohibited. I don't even get to the boot menu. Any ideas how to work around this ?12:29
holsteinwiben: i would try some options at the alternate grub menu.. pressing shift while booting.. choose under the F6 menu some options like "nomodeset"12:33
wibenholstein, pressing shift doesn't seem to do anything, do i press and hold ? When do i press it ?12:39
holsteinwiben: i just tap shift... right after the "bios" stuff.. tap ....tap....tap...tap12:41
wibenI tried that, no effect12:42
holsteinwiben: cool.. you can look into "safe graphics mode".. or passing other kernel parameters at boot.. if it were my box, i would just keep throwing live CD's at it til something boots, and note the kernel version12:43
wibenholstein, ok, I wrote Packard Bell but that probably wont do any good, I'll keep trying...12:48
holsteinwiben: thats a great idea!.. and troubleshooting the usb stick on other machines is a good idea too12:49
wibenhmm... just tried xubuntu 12.04, now it stops at a message saying: SYSLINUX 4.03 2010-10-22 EDD Copyright... and so on12:50
holsteinwiben: i would try that alterate grub menu.. i like using puppy linux too since there is a nice wizard that pops up to force the vesa driver12:52
wibentried typing "help" <enter>, read somewhere that it might do something also tried tapping shift12:52
wibenno luck12:52
holsteinwiben: "help" wont help...12:53
wibenholstein, :) worth a shot12:53
holsteinwiben: i would either, give up on the legacy hardware, or try a live CD from that "era"... or try a puppy/knoppix/some other live CD that might get to a desktop12:53
wibenholstein, lets give puppy a try, sound cute12:55

tweaksterhi. I am looking at a LXDE desktop for Lubuntu, and this is the first LXDE environment I have used.I was previously more accustomed to having most of the programs plainly visible from a desktop GUI, but LXDE has me wondering where to start up some of these programs. For example, ...19:55
tweaksterI can see in the Synaptic Package Manager that a package called "gnome-disk-utility" was installed, but there is no icon that I can find on the menu where one would start this program. I searched online for it, and one of the references stated that it would install to /usr/share/gnome-disk-utility, but I can't see any folder with that name. I searched for a manual using LXTerminal, but nothing showed up. So I am at a bit of19:56
tweakster Can someone offer a pointer as a general rule for the approach to use? :)19:56
wxltweakster: #1 it's not gonna look like unity, sorry. you can try the netbook interface and that will kind of get you there.19:59
wxltweakster: #2. there are some packages whose names don't really describe what they do, so the menu items have a different listing. you can right click on the menu item and look at properties to see which command it uses.19:59
Unit193Could also dpkg -L gnome-disk-utility20:00
wxlyou'll also find the actual package name used in /usr/share/applications and you can kind of figure it out that way20:01
tweaksterwxl: that last suggestion worked for me and showed a good general approach to finding the programs. thanks for that.  :)20:08
tweaksterUnit193: I used your method and it did show me some information about it, so I can at least see that it appears to be installed.20:09
tweaksterwxl: are all the programs installed going to appear in /usr/share/application?20:11
tweaksteri did indeed find the disk-utility in there, and clicking its icon fired it up, sure enough.20:11
wxltweakster: no, but kind of20:15
wxlin general the only thing you'll see in there are gui items20:15
wxlbut you won't see, for example, top or nano20:16
bioterrorgnome disk-utility is this Palimpsest20:16
Unit193My command shows what files it installed, you can use grep to get bin or applications  (what command to type, or menu name)20:16
wxlnor will you see things like finch (command line pidgin) were you to install it20:16
wxlbioterror: yes20:16

bioterrorprobably I'll never move to quantal as my current home laptop cannot run it :D20:17

Unit193Install liquorix kernel, it is non-pae I think. ÑP20:19
redderhsFor user generated shortcuts, where does one place them to show up on the lxdemenu?20:28
gomiboyredderhs: you have to make a .desktop file and place it under ~/.local/share/applications20:35
redderhsI was trying there just a few minutes ago, But I found out that the shortcut made with right click didnt have the correct extension20:39
redderhsthank you gomiboy20:39
gomiboyredderhs: mind it's not a simple shortcut, read this: http://wiki.lxde.org/en/Main_Menu20:40
redderhsYes. what i meant to say was, I tried this path you had told me earlier, but the file was not named properly so it was not displayed in the menu20:42
redderhsAll is well now.20:42
