=== silverarrow_ is now known as silverarrow [02:57] I enjoy Lubuntu. Lubuntu is what Ubuntu should have been. Lubuntu does a lot of stuff right even the little things like shipping with Chromium instead of firefox. I can sync all my addons and themes by just signing in to chromium. [02:58] LXDE is another great choice no tablet based unity stuff, LXDE is whata menu bar should be, simple. [02:58] ya [02:59] When Steam for Linux beta comes i'm definitely gonna try it lubuntu [02:59] I'm glad someone's as happy as I am. I did swap around a lot of the stock applications for my own personal preferences, but lubuntu is great, couldn't see myself using a different distro other than this. [02:59] same here cdoublejj: cant wait for CSGO or CSS support =] [02:59] well i'm not ditching windows, i'm definitely a gamer but, i like using other oses like OSX x86 and linux (Lubuntu) [03:00] The indie humble bundle already comes with linux supported games, iwas suprised to see PPhysconaughts and Rochard on there [03:00] I ditched Windows just a few days ago; never turning back. [03:00] though they may be cop out wine setup thingy [03:02] I like windows it does what i want and i know the back end pretty well just not the super advanced stuff and can make it do what i want, i find it just as customizable as linux how ever being so familiar with windows i like breath of fresh air and play with linux [03:03] after seeing Lubuntu i see some advantages over windows specially for people who only use their machines for internet only. [03:05] I only wish I discovered Lubuntu earlier [03:13] So this is interesting i got my new lubuntu install going on real hardware and it locks up after about minute, i know it's not hard lock because i can still work the numlock [03:14] does it have any known problems with nividia cards or chipsets? [03:14] not sure, i have a discreet nvidia 550m, but i'm running intel hd3000 as a main [03:19] and it's always right after boot [04:16] so i reinstalled and updated the installer first and opted to not download updates while installing and it didn't help, it stilll ocks up just after booting on to the desktop [04:17] maybe you should try posting on the forums [04:18] that or you could try waiting for someone to come about around here that may have an idea of what you could try [04:23] I hope you do find a solution though. [04:27] me to [04:27] might just have to post on the forums [04:27] is your pc one you built yourself? [04:30] yeah [04:30] What kind of Video Card do you have? make / model? [04:30] nvidia BFG GTS250 1gb [04:31] http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814143191 [04:33] what mobo? [04:46] Asus A8N32-SLI Deluxe [04:51] I dont think i've ever had a Linux distro lock up on boot.. [04:52] So i'm kinda at a loss of what to provide, for steps. [04:52] well it locks up just after booting after bringing up the desktop [04:53] If I was in your shoes and was set in my ways on figuring out why, I'd trial and error by taking out a component; like say the video card and see if that changes anything. [04:53] And this wasn't happening with any other linux distros? [04:58] or just force the vesa driver.. [04:58] id like to try ALT+F2 or some other tty and see if those are up during that lock as well [05:07] i wouldn't know the only other os i run is windows 7 [05:10] alt + f2 would open up a run window [05:10] does it do it? [05:52] alt + f2? i t was reading ctrl + alt+ f2, i'll give that a try [06:20] so i f2ed before it locked up, basically it's a total lock up but, i can still use num locks .... and i just realized i have switch and numlock always works. i'm gonna go ahead and hook the keyboar straigh to the machine and see f it truley hard locks and if it does i'm gonna save bio settings and go back stock settings (no oc) and see how that goes [06:21] i tried lowering my clocks already and that didn't help i'll see how settingthem stock goes , i'm gonna guess not same thing, if so then i reinstall on stock clocks and see how that goes [06:21] too bad i don't any thing about retrieving logs [06:31] live boot runs fine oced or otherwise [06:31] whats the deal it has to be some program or driver that once it loads locks the whole system [06:58] for the heck of it i'm gonna un hook the network cable and install that way [09:09] I figured out the cause of my locks ups === silverarrow_ is now known as silverarrow === silverarrow_ is now known as silverarrow [12:29] Hi, I'm trying to boot Lubuntu 12.04 from live usb on Packard Bell DotS2 Netbook. I've checked the usb stick on 2 other computers, it works fine. However on the netbook it blocks the boot with some information message about, Intel PineVIEW and Disassembly Prohibited. I don't even get to the boot menu. Any ideas how to work around this ? [12:33] wiben: i would try some options at the alternate grub menu.. pressing shift while booting.. choose under the F6 menu some options like "nomodeset" [12:39] holstein, pressing shift doesn't seem to do anything, do i press and hold ? When do i press it ? [12:41] wiben: i just tap shift... right after the "bios" stuff.. tap ....tap....tap...tap [12:42] I tried that, no effect [12:43] wiben: cool.. you can look into "safe graphics mode".. or passing other kernel parameters at boot.. if it were my box, i would just keep throwing live CD's at it til something boots, and note the kernel version [12:48] holstein, ok, I wrote Packard Bell but that probably wont do any good, I'll keep trying... [12:49] wiben: thats a great idea!.. and troubleshooting the usb stick on other machines is a good idea too [12:50] hmm... just tried xubuntu 12.04, now it stops at a message saying: SYSLINUX 4.03 2010-10-22 EDD Copyright... and so on [12:52] wiben: i would try that alterate grub menu.. i like using puppy linux too since there is a nice wizard that pops up to force the vesa driver [12:52] tried typing "help" , read somewhere that it might do something also tried tapping shift [12:52] no luck [12:53] wiben: "help" wont help... [12:53] holstein, :) worth a shot [12:53] wiben: i would either, give up on the legacy hardware, or try a live CD from that "era"... or try a puppy/knoppix/some other live CD that might get to a desktop [12:55] holstein, lets give puppy a try, sound cute [17:00] greetings, has anyone managed to use remastersys with lubuntu12.04? [17:13] what option should be added to a .desktop file in order to launch an application undecorated by default? [17:18] http://ricecows.org/lubuntu/xcompmgr.desktop === silverarrow_ is now known as silverarrow [19:55] hi. I am looking at a LXDE desktop for Lubuntu, and this is the first LXDE environment I have used.I was previously more accustomed to having most of the programs plainly visible from a desktop GUI, but LXDE has me wondering where to start up some of these programs. For example, ... [19:56] I can see in the Synaptic Package Manager that a package called "gnome-disk-utility" was installed, but there is no icon that I can find on the menu where one would start this program. I searched online for it, and one of the references stated that it would install to /usr/share/gnome-disk-utility, but I can't see any folder with that name. I searched for a manual using LXTerminal, but nothing showed up. So I am at a bit of [19:56] Can someone offer a pointer as a general rule for the approach to use? :) [19:59] tweakster: #1 it's not gonna look like unity, sorry. you can try the netbook interface and that will kind of get you there. [19:59] tweakster: #2. there are some packages whose names don't really describe what they do, so the menu items have a different listing. you can right click on the menu item and look at properties to see which command it uses. [20:00] Could also dpkg -L gnome-disk-utility [20:01] you'll also find the actual package name used in /usr/share/applications and you can kind of figure it out that way [20:08] wxl: that last suggestion worked for me and showed a good general approach to finding the programs. thanks for that. :) [20:09] Unit193: I used your method and it did show me some information about it, so I can at least see that it appears to be installed. [20:11] wxl: are all the programs installed going to appear in /usr/share/application? [20:11] i did indeed find the disk-utility in there, and clicking its icon fired it up, sure enough. [20:15] tweakster: no, but kind of [20:15] in general the only thing you'll see in there are gui items [20:16] but you won't see, for example, top or nano [20:16] gnome disk-utility is this Palimpsest [20:16] My command shows what files it installed, you can use grep to get bin or applications (what command to type, or menu name) [20:16] nor will you see things like finch (command line pidgin) were you to install it [20:16] bioterror: yes [20:17] bioterror: tho now we're moving to Disks/gnome-disks for quntal [20:17] [20:17] probably I'll never move to quantal as my current home laptop cannot run it :D [20:17] lulz [20:19] Install liquorix kernel, it is non-pae I think. ÑP [20:28] For user generated shortcuts, where does one place them to show up on the lxdemenu? [20:35] redderhs: you have to make a .desktop file and place it under ~/.local/share/applications [20:39] I was trying there just a few minutes ago, But I found out that the shortcut made with right click didnt have the correct extension [20:39] thank you gomiboy [20:40] redderhs: mind it's not a simple shortcut, read this: http://wiki.lxde.org/en/Main_Menu [20:42] Yes. what i meant to say was, I tried this path you had told me earlier, but the file was not named properly so it was not displayed in the menu [20:42] All is well now. [22:07] ace, telnet. ofcourse [22:07] ace___: I guess it comes down to what functions you are looking for and what is considered lightweight to you [22:07] I use FireFox. [22:08] seamonkey [22:08] hmm [22:08] telnet [22:08] when i'm not using chromium, w3m :) [22:08] but as redderhs states, we all have different kind of needs [22:10] the best thing to do, is to try out different ones and to see what works best for you [22:10] if you can live without fancy features, midori for example [22:10] some people tends to like Opera [22:11] i agree with redderhs although i'll leave my own feelings that i don't like midori. i kind of want to, but i don't. [22:11] yeah, it's quite like the parents in law [22:11] indeed [22:11] you try to like them, but something just clicks with them [22:11] :) [22:12] i just found out Arora and it looks good for me from now on [22:12] I like chrome/chromium [22:13] i think xombero (if you must) is just right [22:13] but most of the time, i use chromium [22:13] syncs all the stuff and I get exactly same UI on both, Xorg and Windows [22:13] love that sync feature [22:13] yeah [22:13] +1 [22:13] I love to share my stuff with the big G [22:13] just waiting for my lg lucid to get the ics update so i can sync to that too [22:13] Opera has this sync feature too [22:13] so does ffox [22:14] and also, opera has nice "proxy" ;) [22:14] unfortunately my employer already provides me a .no access if I use VPN [22:14] arora has been dead a while. [22:15] but good night [22:15] :-) [22:15] I'll let you fight and argue about which browser is lightest and nicest [22:15] take care bioterror [22:15] I think firefox is the one that needs most configuring [22:15] what is the most secure browser? [22:15] a_b0y, the one that doesnt let you go to public addresses [22:16] I've used chrome on my Windows 7 machine and I do go to the darkest corners of the internet and I have encountered zero problems [22:16] is it true that everything you type in the chrome address bar is sent to google by default? [22:16] a_b0y, if you sync [22:17] Big Brother Google. [22:17] it does it really matter? it still knows where you are [22:17] i'll admit, i am weary of using too much products from google =P but chromium is supposed to be open sourced so, if you can read code you should be able to see if such a thing were taking place. [22:17] no matter what browser you use [22:18] what do you mean [22:18] what do I mean? I mean google analytics for example [22:18] true, everyone uses that [22:18] I'm using Analytics Blocker [22:18] noscript [22:19] that's one reason why i use firefox. [22:19] and I have http*://* as my wild card [22:19] i should use no script, but everything doesn't look as pretty [22:19] bioterror: what kind of corners? [22:19] Ghostery. [22:19] it can, if you take the time to find out what layer does what [22:19] porn [22:19] you can use duckduckgo as default [22:20] and use https everywhere [22:20] duckduckgo = search engine [22:20] most secure browser imho is xombero [22:20] i use https://www.StagePage.com [22:20] they like shut everything off as default :) [22:20] at least my all searches are private [22:20] seriously, look it up [22:20] wxl, the ones that burns into your retina [22:20] it's light too [22:21] * wxl remembers that #lubuntu is logged [22:22] google knows if you have any illnesses, what your personal interests are, or even what politics you prefer [22:22] yep [22:22] the CIA would be out of their mind to not be involved with google [22:23] a_b0y: i should recommend #tinfoilhatclub [22:23] Greetings to all CIA personnel who hears this channel! o> [22:23] i hope Blackberry 10 turns out to be a winner [22:24] ew [22:24] btw. facebook also knows quite much what you do [22:24] i don't have facebook, do you? [22:24] ofcourse I do, I like to stalk people [22:24] lol [22:24] pornstars that is [22:25] they are not that active on facebook :( [22:26] but if you are logged into facebook with your browser, all the news sites and other sites which has this "share" button tells that they know what you're surfing [22:26] as it will tell "this and this many friends has liked" or shared [22:26] * wxl suggests -offtopic [22:26] internet has changed quite much since the 90's [22:26] that's why I use chrome/chromium as it has quite good blockers that works [22:26] and this magnificent sync [22:27] a lot of people have facebook accounts, but what percent of those accounts are active regularly? [22:27] a_b0y, quite many [22:27] indeed [22:27] actually in a about 10 years, all passwords will be useless [22:27] can we move this discussion to #lubuntu-offtopic, please? [22:27] a_b0y, http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2410334,00.asp [22:29] i just installed lubuntu. when i start up there is a 'system program error'. it gives me no info what the problem is but if i want report the error i have to enter my password. how do i know it is a genuine error and not a phising / virus to get my root password?
