FloatingGoatquassel is a better IRC client than xchat, just sayin.. just sayin..02:04
Unit193Why do you think it is "better" ?  Quassel only seems to be better because of their "core" feature, and xchat is faaar better when you look at the depends.02:06
FloatingGoatbecause quassel is much more well rounded02:10
FloatingGoatyou set up a network02:10
FloatingGoatyou join a few channels02:10
len-dt :)  There is a group of words with no real meaning02:10
FloatingGoatyou  enter your nick02:10
FloatingGoatyou quit quasel02:10
len-dtSounds like xchat so far02:10
FloatingGoatyou open quassell again, you join the channels you joined before, the nick you entered is saved and used, your network is as it was.02:11
FloatingGoatautomatically02:11
len-dtSounds about the same as xchat still02:11
FloatingGoator well xchat never saves for me02:11
FloatingGoatdo i gotta click a button or something02:12
len-dtSounds good02:12
XchattingGoathow i save this02:13
FloatingGoatxchat looks really similar to quassell but it seems like it just works a little better.. everytime i close xchat i have to enter everything over.02:14
FloatingGoatand even if there is some way to keep everything it definetly isnt the most intuitive thing to find.02:14
FloatingGoatand ive heard here before that you would like the experience to benifit newcomers02:15
len-dtxchat was the first irc I used. The first screen that came up allows setting up to 3 choices of nick and choose what server to go to... I found it easy to use as a first timer. Any channel set as a favourite by right clicking will open automatically next time.02:18
len-dtHowever, aside from that, irc is not what art is about.02:19
FloatingGoatI guess so02:19
len-dtaudio, graphics, and etc. is what this distro is about.02:20
FloatingGoatyou should look into adding lmms by default :)02:20
FloatingGoatI said that earlier but02:21
len-dtThe idea is to get people started. There are tons of apps out there and they are all easy to install. Open the software center and click on what you want maybe add password and wait.02:21
FloatingGoatI just like having all this by default because installing some of this stuff is tedious02:22
len-dtLmms is under consideration, Probably not this cycle now but maybe next02:22
FloatingGoatlmms not so much but02:22
len-dtrelease is this month02:22
FloatingGoatlmms devs should look into adding raw audio recording/editing features.02:23
FloatingGoatwould make it like a powerhouse for me..02:23
FloatingGoatlen-dt: can you do a lot of the stuff you can do in lmms, in ardour?02:24
len-dtqtracktor does a lot of that stuff. I do mostly live mic stuff and ardour just works for that02:25
len-dtardour 3 when it gets out the door does midi as well02:25
FloatingGoathmm but i dont have a midi keyboard, is why i use lmms02:26
len-dtI looked at lmms about a year ago and decided it really didn't have anything for me.02:26
FloatingGoatusually what i do though is i record vocals with the simple recorder, and put them into lmms with the audio file processor. put a few filters and im good to go.02:26
FloatingGoatid already would have made the backtrack. so i got the backtrack, the vocals, and a few guitar samples. I dont have to mess with any other programs.02:27
len-dtI find the speed I want to go and get hydrogen running a simple beat.02:27
len-dtthen I record vocal and guitar with one mic on top.02:28
len-dtthat is my scratch02:28
FloatingGoative done that before too.02:28
len-dtI record bass on a track, then guitar (maybe two three or more tracks)02:28
len-dtthen I mute the scratch and redo all vocals on top of that... or I might add drums if needed02:29
FloatingGoatyou play bass guitar?02:29
len-dtI'm not a KB player really02:29
len-dtBass is my main thing02:29
len-dt (right now)02:30
len-dtIt is what I play in front of people anyway02:30
FloatingGoatill try and show you something of mine02:33
len-dtto be honest, I haven't done a lot of recording, I play more.02:45
FloatingGoatyeah idk02:46
FloatingGoative done a bit of recording myself02:46
FloatingGoatim trying to get better at it02:46
FloatingGoati really like lmms though02:48
len-dtI'm going to take another look at it.02:49
FloatingGoatwant to hear what i made with it?02:50
FloatingGoator not?02:51
len-dtsure02:51
FloatingGoatits kind of a vulgar song02:51
FloatingGoatsays the F word a lot02:51
FloatingGoatdo you mind?02:52
len-dtI won't hold that against the music...02:52
FloatingGoathttp://ubuntuone.com/2S4FvNTsZpk8rIJrVzDBIy02:53
FloatingGoat100% lmms im pretty sure :)02:53
FloatingGoatlen-dt: did you listen?02:56
len-dtBrowser is giving me trouble... I'll try something else02:57
FloatingGoatalright03:00
FloatingGoatlen-dt: lemme know03:02
len-dtOk, it is all there.03:02
len-dtThe levels seem like they haven't been tweeked yet03:02
len-dtIn particular the mix between male and female.03:03
FloatingGoatwhat do you mean?03:03
len-dtThe womans voice seems a lot hotter to me03:03
FloatingGoathey there03:04
len-dtThe mans voice seems to go down some when the two are together03:04
FloatingGoatthe male voice is me03:04
FloatingGoati think its..03:04
FloatingGoati think i might have made it that way03:04
FloatingGoatyou mean the volume?03:04
len-dtYa03:05
len-dtThe piano was put in with the mouse?03:05
len-dtNote by note?03:06
len-dtOr is that recorded too?03:06
FloatingGoatyeah with a mouse03:08
FloatingGoatnote by note (somewhat)03:08
len-dtPretty good then03:08
FloatingGoatthanks03:08
FloatingGoatlmms autmatically chords the notes03:09
len-dtIt is hard to do keys that way (at least for me)03:09
FloatingGoatif you set it to do so03:09
FloatingGoatwhat do you mean?03:09
len-dtGenerally it is hard to get the flow a KB player can while playing.03:10
len-dtI stay away from percussive KB playing and normally if I do any just a string pad stuff03:11
len-dtJust the strengths of different people I guess03:11
len-dtI like that it is real. I have heard way too much "vocal gymnastics" where the singer is just showing off.03:14
len-dtIs that the whole, or just a part? If it is just a part, I won't mention the last note of piano :)03:18
FloatingGoatlol its just a part for now03:19
FloatingGoatit was actually kind of a rough mockup03:19
len-dtThen I would say it works for you.03:19
FloatingGoatI want to re record the guitar, and her part,  and my parts. and add the rest of the song. But for that id need a guitar, id need her..03:20
len-dtRakarrack has a patch that takes a guitar and gives a not bad bass sound03:21
FloatingGoatwhat did you mean when you said "I like that it is real."03:22
FloatingGoatyeah ive used it before in a song i made for fun03:22
len-dtThe song is communicating about real feeling from what seems like a real situation03:23
FloatingGoatyeah03:23
FloatingGoatI wish i could do that03:23
FloatingGoatbut im not very good at songwriting03:23
FloatingGoatthe female in that clip wrote the song03:23
len-dtNo surprise03:23
FloatingGoatshes a really busy person though i guess03:24
len-dtI can feel it03:24
FloatingGoatfeel that she wrote it?03:24
len-dtDo everything else first03:24
len-dtI can feel her feelings in it03:24
FloatingGoatwhat do you mean?03:24
FloatingGoatsad feelings?03:25
len-dtI've been through some things in my life I recognize the feelings and can feel that she seems in tune with it.03:25
FloatingGoatawesome03:26
FloatingGoatI guess thats a good thing to keep in mind when i write a song03:26
len-dtdepends if you are trying to sell to a record company  or not... all they care is how much they can make...03:27
len-dtnot much about art03:27
FloatingGoatyeah if i make music03:27
FloatingGoatim going to sell the records myself03:27
FloatingGoator what not03:27
FloatingGoatim trying to get better and such03:27
FloatingGoatat production03:27
len-dtpractice is everything.03:28
FloatingGoatyeah and i do it all the time03:28
len-dtlisten to things with your eyes shut03:28
FloatingGoatyeah ill have to try that03:29
FloatingGoatcould you answer a question?03:29
FloatingGoatdoes it sound like i made that in lmms?03:29
len-dtI'll try03:29
len-dtI can't tell really03:30
FloatingGoati mean it in a figurative sense03:30
FloatingGoatdoes it sound higher quality than what would be expected03:30
len-dtI'm not sure what you mean03:30
len-dt16 bit audio is 16 bit audio. There are no timing issues I can tell.03:31
len-dtNot that long ago everyone was using tape03:32
FloatingGoatexcept the guitar but the piano covers it up03:32
len-dtThere are stumbles there, but as you said it is a rough draft. That is to be expected.03:33
FloatingGoatim getting a new guitar soon i think03:35
FloatingGoatthis is the one i want http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oia0zBNNi4g03:36
len-dtIf you don't mind my view points.. here is one of mine: http://www.ovenwerks.net/I-wanna-be-like-you2-comp.mp303:38
len-dtHave you played one?03:42
FloatingGoatit just started03:44
FloatingGoatokay im having trouble03:44
len-dtYa my upload is a bit slow.03:44
FloatingGoatit sounds like your using the lspdsa plugins or whatever they are03:45
len-dtOn the electric03:46
FloatingGoatits really good03:46
FloatingGoatsounds like it took a long time03:46
len-dtThe acoustic has just a bit of reverb. That mix is not the best... well lots of things are not the best.03:46
len-dtAboput a day.03:47
len-dtThe first time I did it there was some really bad timing tings03:47
FloatingGoatthe acoustic sounds really good03:48
FloatingGoatwhat did you do to it03:48
len-dtat one point I got my timing really off, so I did it again03:48
len-dtIt is pretyy much just straight03:48
len-dtI use an AT 2020 mic into a Mackie pre then to the sound card03:49
len-dtNo eq03:49
len-dtIt is a higher sounding acoustic (classical) with nylon strings.03:50
len-dtNo pick03:50
FloatingGoatI use an MXL 990 into an M-audio preamp then to soundcard03:50
len-dtMy lead bits could use a redo and are a bit hot.03:51
FloatingGoatim getting a new guitar soon that i hope will sound better03:51
FloatingGoatwhat does it mean when things are hot?03:52
len-dtstand out too much03:52
len-dttoo much volume?03:52
FloatingGoatoh right03:52
FloatingGoatyeah id say the female in my song is too hot03:52
FloatingGoatno pun intended03:52
FloatingGoatI need a mic stand and a pop filter.03:53
len-dtI made the mistake of running the whole thing through a compressor when I encoded to mp303:53
FloatingGoatoops03:53
len-dtWe recorded the vocals with the mic about 12 to 15 inches away from the lips.03:53
FloatingGoatwhy not just re-encode03:54
len-dtI also like to set the mic slightly high above the lip line03:54
len-dtI would like to remix/record.03:55
FloatingGoatyeah we did ours about 12 inches away03:55
FloatingGoatand the03:55
FloatingGoatguitar was like a few inches from the soundhole03:55
len-dtI have since added another verse too03:55
len-dtI think I had the mic a bit farther away with the guitar too03:56
len-dtand maybe just the neck side of the hole.03:56
len-dtBut with more distance exact placement is not really needed.03:58
FloatingGoatyeah03:59
FloatingGoatbut i guess what you use suits you, and wht i use suits me.03:59
FloatingGoati want to go for indie rock with some elementes of indie pop. So i do use a lot of synthetics, and piano.04:00
len-dtClose placement will emphasize the bass04:00
FloatingGoatlmms works for that04:00
len-dtOK04:00
FloatingGoatyeah idk with guitar I usually highlight the bass04:00
FloatingGoatis that bad04:00
len-dtIt is what you want it to sound like04:01
len-dtrecord it 5 times with different set ups and choose the best.04:01
len-dtYou seem to like the low sound considering what you want to buy. So close mic will help that04:02
FloatingGoatyou mean that hohner?04:03
len-dtYa, it is a big body guitar that will have more bottom end than the classic I used.04:03
len-dtMy stage guitar is sort of in between, but because of the pickup sounds a bit lower.04:04
len-dtI tune it down two semitones as well04:05
FloatingGoatahh i see04:08
FloatingGoatdo you code as well?04:08
len-dtNot much.04:08
len-dtMostly I do anything I need with scripts04:09
FloatingGoatyou're on the ubuntu studio team?04:10
len-dttk/tcl... but I think I will spend some time learning python04:10
len-dtYa04:10
len-dtI probably did most of the changes for 12.1004:11
len-dtMostly menu stuff04:11
len-dtI added the publishing section too.04:11
len-dtBy adding and changing... I mean I took other peoples ideas and put them in the distro. It was certainly not a one man show.04:16
FloatingGoathttp://ubuntuone.com/2XHwIYutr2K6O9w6lHEe8A dats my menu04:17
len-dtLooks like the desktop, but I don't see a menu04:22
FloatingGoatapplications, places, system04:29
len-dtWe could do that... depends on the use a person it gets put to I guess04:30
len-dtI don't use system enough to make it worthy of its own menu04:30
len-dtPlaces maybe04:31
FloatingGoatthe reason i think for the system menu04:31
FloatingGoatis because when you have system in the main applications menu04:31
len-dtIf I was going to pull out a menu it would the audio one04:31
FloatingGoatit just makes it a bit clogier04:31
FloatingGoatgood point04:31
FloatingGoator just all 4 catagories have their own menu04:32
FloatingGoat"Production"04:32
FloatingGoator something04:32
len-dtThere are some ideas floating around for some "workflow" menus04:33
FloatingGoatthat would be interesting04:37
* len-dt is heading for bed05:01

Dagon84Hi07:51
Dagon84may i ask for help about the installation to someone? The partition GUI during the installation see my HD blank EVEN if i have 3 partition on it, and on one of it i have another OS.07:52
Dagon84i don't want to erase everything, so i don't know how to proceed07:53
FloatingGoathmm?07:54
ailo-wDagon84: Sure it's the right HD?07:55
Dagon84I have my HD divided in 3, one partition with WIN7, the other 2 empty, the first in NTFS and the second in FAT3207:55
Dagon84yeas, i have only one HD in this notebook07:55
Dagon84:)07:55
Dagon84yes*07:55
ailo-wDid you choose manual partitioning?07:55
Dagon84yeah, i choose manual07:56
Dagon84i can show screenshot :)07:56
Dagon84it's seems that it see the HD as blank, not formatted at all07:57
Dagon84it says "This computer currently has no detected operating system. what would you like to do?"07:59
Dagon84but the OS exist on the first of 3 partitions :|08:00
ailo-wDagon84: There's a chance that the live DVD is not supporting Logical Volumes, which is a little strange08:01
ailo-wI recommend trying the Ubuntu Alternate installer. You can use it to install any Ubuntu derivative08:01
ailo-wHowever, there's a chance that realtime audio will not be set up that way08:01
Dagon84i use this DVD on another PC and it does recognise the partitions and OS.08:01
ailo-wClearly it has something to do with the configuration on that specific machine then08:02
Dagon84thank you08:02
Dagon84i never hear about Ubuntu Alternate08:03
ailo-wDagon84: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/alternative-downloads08:03
ailo-wUse one of the torrent links08:03
ailo-wYou can create a bootable usb stick. I recommend unetbootin08:03
ailo-wWireless setup may be problematic, so use cable08:04
ailo-wDuring install, that is08:04
Dagon84i'm qiuite scared about a text installation, i've never done somethin like that before08:04
ailo-wIt's the same thing pretty much. No need to choose "Expert Install"08:05
Dagon84:D08:05
ailo-wThe partitioning is the same, only you don't use the mouse08:05
Dagon84Listen, may i install on USB or only on DVD?08:05
ailo-wAs I mentioned, use unetbootin to create a bootable usb stick08:06
Dagon84ok, so is the same08:06
ailo-wDuring install you can choose to install ubuntustudio-desktop, and any other metas you like08:06
Dagon84perfect08:06
ailo-wUse Space key to make selections. Not Enter08:06
Dagon84lol08:07
Dagon84may i run the installation withouth internet, or it has to download several files for UBUNTU studio?08:08
Dagon84without*08:08
ailo-wI recommend using internet. Otherwise, you will probably not be able to install any of the desktop derivatives08:08
ailo-wDagon84: As for realtime privilege for the user, there's a passage about it here https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuStudioPreparation#Real-Time_Support08:09
Dagon84i understand....so i have to check for a long cable.... the router is in a very uncomfortable place :D08:09
ailo-wYou need to be in audio group, and make sure /etc/security/limits.d/audio.conf is not named /etc/security/limits.d/audio.conf.disabled (after you installed jack)08:10
ailo-wAlso, remember to reboot after any changes08:10
ailo-wIf you're into the audio apps, that is08:10
ailo-wYou'll also probably want linux-lowlatency, instead of linux-generic08:11
ailo-wThat's all08:11

TigerboyI've installed Ubuntu with 12.04.1 and went back and added in various "desktops" like Cinnamon/Gnome/XFCE even added Xubuntu which I use... then adding in UbuntuStudio packages... Is this advisable? I seem to have a few errors with things like aptd apport and ubuntu update crashing. Should I do a clean UbuntuStudio? Or just leave things as they are?20:29
drupinTigerboy: studio has a different kernel20:45
drupinTigerboy: use a fresh install of studio if you wan play with music20:45
TigerboyDrupin: thank you so UbuntuStudio default kernel has a near realtime delay by default --21:55
drupindont know much yes but its different21:59
Tigerboydrupin: thanks.21:59
