=== _dancer is now known as MOSMarauder === Remy is now known as Guest96701 [02:04] quassel is a better IRC client than xchat, just sayin.. just sayin.. [02:06] Why do you think it is "better" ? Quassel only seems to be better because of their "core" feature, and xchat is faaar better when you look at the depends. [02:10] because quassel is much more well rounded [02:10] you set up a network [02:10] you join a few channels [02:10] :) There is a group of words with no real meaning [02:10] you enter your nick [02:10] you quit quasel [02:10] Sounds like xchat so far [02:11] you open quassell again, you join the channels you joined before, the nick you entered is saved and used, your network is as it was. [02:11] automatically [02:11] Sounds about the same as xchat still [02:11] or well xchat never saves for me [02:12] do i gotta click a button or something [02:12] Sounds good [02:13] how i save this [02:14] xchat looks really similar to quassell but it seems like it just works a little better.. everytime i close xchat i have to enter everything over. [02:14] and even if there is some way to keep everything it definetly isnt the most intuitive thing to find. [02:15] and ive heard here before that you would like the experience to benifit newcomers [02:18] xchat was the first irc I used. The first screen that came up allows setting up to 3 choices of nick and choose what server to go to... I found it easy to use as a first timer. Any channel set as a favourite by right clicking will open automatically next time. [02:19] However, aside from that, irc is not what art is about. [02:19] I guess so [02:20] audio, graphics, and etc. is what this distro is about. [02:20] you should look into adding lmms by default :) [02:21] I said that earlier but [02:21] The idea is to get people started. There are tons of apps out there and they are all easy to install. Open the software center and click on what you want maybe add password and wait. [02:22] I just like having all this by default because installing some of this stuff is tedious [02:22] Lmms is under consideration, Probably not this cycle now but maybe next [02:22] lmms not so much but [02:22] release is this month [02:23] lmms devs should look into adding raw audio recording/editing features. [02:23] would make it like a powerhouse for me.. [02:24] len-dt: can you do a lot of the stuff you can do in lmms, in ardour? [02:25] qtracktor does a lot of that stuff. I do mostly live mic stuff and ardour just works for that [02:25] ardour 3 when it gets out the door does midi as well [02:26] hmm but i dont have a midi keyboard, is why i use lmms [02:26] I looked at lmms about a year ago and decided it really didn't have anything for me. [02:26] usually what i do though is i record vocals with the simple recorder, and put them into lmms with the audio file processor. put a few filters and im good to go. [02:27] id already would have made the backtrack. so i got the backtrack, the vocals, and a few guitar samples. I dont have to mess with any other programs. [02:27] I find the speed I want to go and get hydrogen running a simple beat. [02:28] then I record vocal and guitar with one mic on top. [02:28] that is my scratch [02:28] ive done that before too. [02:28] I record bass on a track, then guitar (maybe two three or more tracks) [02:29] then I mute the scratch and redo all vocals on top of that... or I might add drums if needed [02:29] you play bass guitar? [02:29] I'm not a KB player really [02:29] Bass is my main thing [02:30] (right now) [02:30] It is what I play in front of people anyway [02:33] ill try and show you something of mine [02:45] to be honest, I haven't done a lot of recording, I play more. [02:46] yeah idk [02:46] ive done a bit of recording myself [02:46] im trying to get better at it [02:48] i really like lmms though [02:49] I'm going to take another look at it. [02:50] want to hear what i made with it? [02:51] or not? [02:51] sure [02:51] its kind of a vulgar song [02:51] says the F word a lot [02:52] do you mind? [02:52] I won't hold that against the music... [02:53] http://ubuntuone.com/2S4FvNTsZpk8rIJrVzDBIy [02:53] 100% lmms im pretty sure :) [02:56] len-dt: did you listen? [02:57] Browser is giving me trouble... I'll try something else [03:00] alright [03:02] len-dt: lemme know [03:02] Ok, it is all there. [03:02] The levels seem like they haven't been tweeked yet [03:03] In particular the mix between male and female. [03:03] what do you mean? [03:03] The womans voice seems a lot hotter to me [03:04] hey there [03:04] The mans voice seems to go down some when the two are together [03:04] the male voice is me [03:04] i think its.. [03:04] i think i might have made it that way [03:04] you mean the volume? [03:05] Ya [03:05] The piano was put in with the mouse? [03:06] Note by note? [03:06] Or is that recorded too? [03:08] yeah with a mouse [03:08] note by note (somewhat) [03:08] Pretty good then [03:08] thanks [03:09] lmms autmatically chords the notes [03:09] It is hard to do keys that way (at least for me) [03:09] if you set it to do so [03:09] what do you mean? [03:10] Generally it is hard to get the flow a KB player can while playing. [03:11] I stay away from percussive KB playing and normally if I do any just a string pad stuff [03:11] Just the strengths of different people I guess [03:14] I like that it is real. I have heard way too much "vocal gymnastics" where the singer is just showing off. [03:18] Is that the whole, or just a part? If it is just a part, I won't mention the last note of piano :) [03:19] lol its just a part for now [03:19] it was actually kind of a rough mockup [03:19] Then I would say it works for you. [03:20] I want to re record the guitar, and her part, and my parts. and add the rest of the song. But for that id need a guitar, id need her.. [03:21] Rakarrack has a patch that takes a guitar and gives a not bad bass sound [03:22] what did you mean when you said "I like that it is real." [03:22] yeah ive used it before in a song i made for fun [03:23] The song is communicating about real feeling from what seems like a real situation [03:23] yeah [03:23] I wish i could do that [03:23] but im not very good at songwriting [03:23] the female in that clip wrote the song [03:23] No surprise [03:24] shes a really busy person though i guess [03:24] I can feel it [03:24] feel that she wrote it? [03:24] Do everything else first [03:24] I can feel her feelings in it [03:24] what do you mean? [03:25] sad feelings? [03:25] I've been through some things in my life I recognize the feelings and can feel that she seems in tune with it. [03:26] awesome [03:26] I guess thats a good thing to keep in mind when i write a song [03:27] depends if you are trying to sell to a record company or not... all they care is how much they can make... [03:27] not much about art [03:27] yeah if i make music [03:27] im going to sell the records myself [03:27] or what not [03:27] im trying to get better and such [03:27] at production [03:28] practice is everything. [03:28] yeah and i do it all the time [03:28] listen to things with your eyes shut [03:29] yeah ill have to try that [03:29] could you answer a question? [03:29] does it sound like i made that in lmms? [03:29] I'll try [03:30] I can't tell really [03:30] i mean it in a figurative sense [03:30] does it sound higher quality than what would be expected [03:30] I'm not sure what you mean [03:31] 16 bit audio is 16 bit audio. There are no timing issues I can tell. [03:32] Not that long ago everyone was using tape [03:32] except the guitar but the piano covers it up [03:33] There are stumbles there, but as you said it is a rough draft. That is to be expected. [03:35] im getting a new guitar soon i think [03:36] this is the one i want http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oia0zBNNi4g [03:38] If you don't mind my view points.. here is one of mine: http://www.ovenwerks.net/I-wanna-be-like-you2-comp.mp3 [03:42] Have you played one? [03:44] it just started [03:44] okay im having trouble [03:44] Ya my upload is a bit slow. [03:45] it sounds like your using the lspdsa plugins or whatever they are [03:46] On the electric [03:46] its really good [03:46] sounds like it took a long time [03:46] The acoustic has just a bit of reverb. That mix is not the best... well lots of things are not the best. [03:47] Aboput a day. [03:47] The first time I did it there was some really bad timing tings [03:48] the acoustic sounds really good [03:48] what did you do to it [03:48] at one point I got my timing really off, so I did it again [03:48] It is pretyy much just straight [03:49] I use an AT 2020 mic into a Mackie pre then to the sound card [03:49] No eq [03:50] It is a higher sounding acoustic (classical) with nylon strings. [03:50] No pick [03:50] I use an MXL 990 into an M-audio preamp then to soundcard [03:51] My lead bits could use a redo and are a bit hot. [03:51] im getting a new guitar soon that i hope will sound better [03:52] what does it mean when things are hot? [03:52] stand out too much [03:52] too much volume? [03:52] oh right [03:52] yeah id say the female in my song is too hot [03:52] no pun intended [03:53] I need a mic stand and a pop filter. [03:53] I made the mistake of running the whole thing through a compressor when I encoded to mp3 [03:53] oops [03:53] We recorded the vocals with the mic about 12 to 15 inches away from the lips. [03:54] why not just re-encode [03:54] I also like to set the mic slightly high above the lip line [03:55] I would like to remix/record. [03:55] yeah we did ours about 12 inches away [03:55] and the [03:55] guitar was like a few inches from the soundhole [03:55] I have since added another verse too [03:56] I think I had the mic a bit farther away with the guitar too [03:56] and maybe just the neck side of the hole. [03:58] But with more distance exact placement is not really needed. [03:59] yeah [03:59] but i guess what you use suits you, and wht i use suits me. [04:00] i want to go for indie rock with some elementes of indie pop. So i do use a lot of synthetics, and piano. [04:00] Close placement will emphasize the bass [04:00] lmms works for that [04:00] OK [04:00] yeah idk with guitar I usually highlight the bass [04:00] is that bad [04:01] It is what you want it to sound like [04:01] record it 5 times with different set ups and choose the best. [04:02] You seem to like the low sound considering what you want to buy. So close mic will help that [04:03] you mean that hohner? [04:03] Ya, it is a big body guitar that will have more bottom end than the classic I used. [04:04] My stage guitar is sort of in between, but because of the pickup sounds a bit lower. [04:05] I tune it down two semitones as well [04:08] ahh i see [04:08] do you code as well? [04:08] Not much. [04:09] Mostly I do anything I need with scripts [04:10] you're on the ubuntu studio team? [04:10] tk/tcl... but I think I will spend some time learning python [04:10] Ya [04:11] I probably did most of the changes for 12.10 [04:11] Mostly menu stuff [04:11] I added the publishing section too. [04:16] By adding and changing... I mean I took other peoples ideas and put them in the distro. It was certainly not a one man show. [04:17] http://ubuntuone.com/2XHwIYutr2K6O9w6lHEe8A dats my menu [04:22] Looks like the desktop, but I don't see a menu [04:29] applications, places, system [04:30] We could do that... depends on the use a person it gets put to I guess [04:30] I don't use system enough to make it worthy of its own menu [04:31] Places maybe [04:31] the reason i think for the system menu [04:31] is because when you have system in the main applications menu [04:31] If I was going to pull out a menu it would the audio one [04:31] it just makes it a bit clogier [04:31] good point [04:32] or just all 4 catagories have their own menu [04:32] "Production" [04:32] or something [04:33] There are some ideas floating around for some "workflow" menus [04:37] that would be interesting [05:01] * len-dt is heading for bed [05:05] later len-dt [07:51] Hi [07:52] may i ask for help about the installation to someone? The partition GUI during the installation see my HD blank EVEN if i have 3 partition on it, and on one of it i have another OS. [07:53] i don't want to erase everything, so i don't know how to proceed [07:54] hmm? [07:55] Dagon84: Sure it's the right HD? [07:55] I have my HD divided in 3, one partition with WIN7, the other 2 empty, the first in NTFS and the second in FAT32 [07:55] yeas, i have only one HD in this notebook [07:55] :) [07:55] yes* [07:55] Did you choose manual partitioning? [07:56] yeah, i choose manual [07:56] i can show screenshot :) [07:57] it's seems that it see the HD as blank, not formatted at all [07:59] it says "This computer currently has no detected operating system. what would you like to do?" [08:00] but the OS exist on the first of 3 partitions :| [08:01] Dagon84: There's a chance that the live DVD is not supporting Logical Volumes, which is a little strange [08:01] I recommend trying the Ubuntu Alternate installer. You can use it to install any Ubuntu derivative [08:01] However, there's a chance that realtime audio will not be set up that way [08:01] i use this DVD on another PC and it does recognise the partitions and OS. [08:02] Clearly it has something to do with the configuration on that specific machine then [08:02] thank you [08:03] i never hear about Ubuntu Alternate [08:03] Dagon84: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/alternative-downloads [08:03] Use one of the torrent links [08:03] You can create a bootable usb stick. I recommend unetbootin [08:04] Wireless setup may be problematic, so use cable [08:04] During install, that is [08:04] i'm qiuite scared about a text installation, i've never done somethin like that before [08:05] It's the same thing pretty much. No need to choose "Expert Install" [08:05] :D [08:05] The partitioning is the same, only you don't use the mouse [08:05] Listen, may i install on USB or only on DVD? [08:06] As I mentioned, use unetbootin to create a bootable usb stick [08:06] ok, so is the same [08:06] During install you can choose to install ubuntustudio-desktop, and any other metas you like [08:06] perfect [08:06] Use Space key to make selections. Not Enter [08:07] lol [08:08] may i run the installation withouth internet, or it has to download several files for UBUNTU studio? [08:08] without* [08:08] I recommend using internet. Otherwise, you will probably not be able to install any of the desktop derivatives [08:09] Dagon84: As for realtime privilege for the user, there's a passage about it here https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuStudioPreparation#Real-Time_Support [08:09] i understand....so i have to check for a long cable.... the router is in a very uncomfortable place :D [08:10] You need to be in audio group, and make sure /etc/security/limits.d/audio.conf is not named /etc/security/limits.d/audio.conf.disabled (after you installed jack) [08:10] Also, remember to reboot after any changes [08:10] If you're into the audio apps, that is [08:11] You'll also probably want linux-lowlatency, instead of linux-generic [08:11] That's all === smartboyhw is now known as nohaggis === nohaggis is now known as smartboyhw [20:29] I've installed Ubuntu with 12.04.1 and went back and added in various "desktops" like Cinnamon/Gnome/XFCE even added Xubuntu which I use... then adding in UbuntuStudio packages... Is this advisable? I seem to have a few errors with things like aptd apport and ubuntu update crashing. Should I do a clean UbuntuStudio? Or just leave things as they are? [20:45] Tigerboy: studio has a different kernel [20:45] Tigerboy: use a fresh install of studio if you wan play with music [21:55] Drupin: thank you so UbuntuStudio default kernel has a near realtime delay by default -- [21:59] dont know much yes but its different [21:59] drupin: thanks. [21:59] https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuStudio [22:14] smartboy not here
