Due to keyboard failure I had to hook up a USB keyboard. Now, the problem is when I have to enter first passphrase - I have to do it via internal keyboard, which is spitting random characters as I type. It only happens on the graphic screen. If I get to GRUB text menu, and then have to enter the passphrase in text mode, it's ok. [06:38] Thus, the question is, how can I disable graphic passhrase screen and force GRUB text menu instead? [19:12] w30, that does not worry me much in fact. What concerns me is CPU and memory [19:15] gmagno, Lubuntu gives you the best choices for low memory usage apps but if you remove abiword and stick in Libreoffice for example you kinda defeat the purpose of a Lubuntu install [19:16] w30, yup, I'll stick to xfce for sure [19:17] gmagno, Lubuntu is a spped deamon on my Hp Atom ssd netbook compared to XP which was unusable [19:18] w30, XP? What are you talking about? Have no idea what that is :) [19:18] gmagno, I didn't even have room for word [19:19] gmagno, it came With Windows XP [19:19] w30, it's a pitty gnome3 and unity suck so much... They are the main reason I know XFCE [19:20] gmagno, It took 3.6 gig for XP alone with no apps [19:21] w30, yeah without all those service packs and who knows what else [19:24] gmagno, why does Unity and Gnome 3 try to force a touch screen interface on to a mouse and keyboard user? [19:25] w30, do they really think the future leaves mouses and keyboards behind? [19:28] I'd say that we have a new class of computer users, the smartphone dumb-asses :) [19:29] i'd say none of this is support and should go to #xubuntu-offtopic [19:35] erm... any recommendation on the best way to load a flashdisk with the operating system? [19:36] I mean, so that I can boot from it [19:36] !unetbootin [19:36] For information about installing Ubuntu from USB flash drives, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromUSBStick - For a persistent live USB install, see: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LiveUsbPendrivePersistent [19:36] also google unetbootin [19:37] ty [19:37] if you mean to "install to it" then you boot a normal live session and choose the live media as target [20:01] weird... my laptop is ignoring BIOS configurations and is booting from hdd... any idea? I've also disabled all other boot options, leaving usb boot only, but no success [20:02] gmagno: did you create the USB correctly? [20:03] recon_lap, erm... yeah, I've used unetbootin [20:04] gmagno: and when you look at the files on the USB , do you see what look like a Linux root directory ? [20:04] recon_lap, erm... lemme check again [20:07] recon_lap, I can find directories like: boot, casper, dists, install, isolinux, pics, pool, preseed. And a bunch of files, md5sum.txt, README.diskdefines, syslinux.cfg, ubnfilel.txt, ubnpathl.txt, ldlinux.sys, menu.c32, ubninit, ubnkern [20:07] try formatting the drive and do it again [20:10] gmagno: that looks about right, have you ever booted that machine with a usb before? [20:11] Sysi, I'll do that, but let me share this first. I just tried to reboot my laptop without the usbdisk plugged in, and I got an error message saying it couldn't start and asked to insert cd or something to boot (which is fine since boot options are telling it to ignore hdd, cd, and everything besides USB). The funny part is when restart with usb plugged in and it boots to the operating system... [20:11] recon_lap, never, first time [20:11] I just got this old computer from a friend, I wanted to use it a server [20:12] but BIOS have the option to boot from usb disk [20:12] was stick formatted as fat32 or ntfs? [20:12] gmagno: well, that sound right. you got a live USB, think you just missed the boot menu [20:13] I'ce seen couple machines that only boot from usb for bios upgrade [20:13] gmagno: boot again and watch it :) [20:13] Sysi, fat32 [20:13] recon_lap, lemme check [20:15] recon_lap, I'm gonna restart again, I wasn't able to see anything this time... PAUSE should pause boot process, right? [20:15] gmagno: what OS does it boot into , you never said? [20:15] XP [20:16] @recon_lap [20:16] gmagno: can you make a CD instead? [20:17] recon_lap, no CD drive :/ [20:17] nor diskette [20:17] ok, Can't say as I know what would cause the USB to boot the harddrive ? [20:18] gmagno: try pressing shift as it boots, might bring up the grub menu [20:18] recon_lap, I restarted again, step by step with PAUSE key and there is nothing telling me about boot by usb [20:18] recon_lap, gonna try that [20:21] recon_lap, it ignored my hold shift input :-/ Btw, this is an ASUS B1000 [20:21] gmagno: and it will not boot without the USB? strange ! [20:22] recon_lap, I'm gonna do this live, one sec [20:24] recon_lap, http://bambuser.com/v/3030312 [20:24] recon_lap, are you watching? [20:25] yep :) [20:28] recon_lap, ok done [20:28] recon_lap, any suggestion [20:28] yep, that booted off the HDD, not so sure about the BIOS, says USB Floppy [20:29] checking again [20:29] gmagno: I mean I think your BIOS will not boot from USB [20:30] hmm ok [20:30] gonna turn off streaming [20:30] Normally it just says USB, USB Floppy is something I'v never seen before [20:31] boas [20:32] recon_lap, hmm i see [20:32] gmagno: Look like the BIOS tries to make the USB into a Floppy disk drive to boot XP updates [20:33] can any one tell me where to find source code for ubuntu keyboard module ? [20:33] recon_lap, didn't knwo that could happen [20:33] gonna try to boot my other laptop with this usb disk [20:34] is this right place for Questions about ubuntu devel [20:34] ? [20:35] recon_lap, brb, I'm rebooting my own laptop [20:37] amourphious: well the devs will be in #xubuntu+1 , but probably a bad time to be buggin them , release due in about 2 weeks [20:39] amourphious: but the source code for all packages should be in the source code repository , you can enable it in synaptic and install the code on your system like any other package [20:46] recon_lap: well actually i needed to see the source code for some purpose anyways thx :)! [20:47] amourphious: well if you install the scr package you can look at it? I assumed you had a purpose :) [20:49] recon_lap, back [20:49] usb disk is fine [20:49] I think its computer problem [20:50] I'll read about ethernet boot, it might be possible [20:50] gmagno: yep, you laptop does not do USB boot, just a Half assed USB Floppy :( [20:50] :-/ [20:51] gmagno: external USB drive is the other option [20:51] gmagno: or create a floppy Linux boot on a usb stick [20:51] recon_lap: well currently I'm using Kubuntu which I suppose does not have Synaptic so can u tell me repo which i need to or can clone ! [20:52] amourphious: this is the xubuntu channel, no one in Kubuntu channel? [20:53] recon_lap, I'm not sure I understand your suggestions [20:54] gmagno: sorry, I meant to type external USB CD drive, if you know anyone with one [20:55] recon_lap, erm... that would still communicate through usb. Wouldn't still have a problem? [20:55] gmagno: not sure [20:56] gmagno: still worth a try if you have access to one [20:57] recon_lap, right. But I don't :-/ Anyway, I think I'm givin up for today. I'll read about boot by eth, maybe it's possible :) [20:57] recon_lap, thanks a lot for helping! [20:57] See ya [20:58] np, good luck [21:13] any folks around with experience in setting proxies in the running session? [21:14] Global? [21:16] Unit193: per user is fine [21:17] i tried: export http_proxy="server" [21:17] but that doesn't seem to take effect immediately [21:17] and i'd prefer to be able to switch proxies without restarting the session just for that [21:18] No, that'd take effect for the shell you were in. You can export that, then start whatever application from that terminal. [21:18] hmm, good point [21:19] That should also change flash and java proxy if you start a browser from there, can check at aboutyourip.info (adblocked, no idea what ads may be) [21:19] seems like at least the changes take effect [21:20] cause when i try to start firefox with a free proxy i found via google, there's no connection :) [21:20] In firefox, edit > preferences > advanced > networking [21:21] right, firefox was a particularly bad example [21:22] export http_proxy="bleh" then you can do something like wget -qO- ifconfig.me/ip [21:24] that wget command doesn't do anything for me [21:25] ochosi: http_proxy="211.140.189.247:80" wget -qO- ifconfig.me/ip [21:26] Exact command worked here, found on http://www.ip-adress.com/proxy_list/ (Who knew I had a good list? ;) ) [21:26] without export? [21:26] That's only for one command, but yeah. [21:26] interesting, i get an ip as a reply [21:26] That's the idea. [21:26] Your proxy seems dead? [21:28] in fact my gf has a proxy at work [21:28] one i obviously can't test now [21:28] but i wanna set up a browser for her [21:28] i guess this way i could even push that one command in a script [21:28] and never affect the home setup [21:39] Unit193: thanks for your help! [21:39] Sure thing, anytime! [21:41] i'm wondering why network manager doesn't have any proxy settings [21:42] maybe it's not supposed to be that "advanced" :) === `mOOse` is now known as m00se [23:30] How do I uninstall xfce/xubuntu-desktop? [23:34] You simply install something else. [23:41] Uh [23:41] no, I mean I installed xubuntu-desktop on ubuntu, and now I'm running out of diskspace. Plus I have like, 4 other wms' and des'. [23:42] !puregnome [23:42] If you want to remove all !Kubuntu packages or !Xubuntu packages and have a default !Ubuntu system, follow the instructions here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PureGnome [23:42] Sudo apt-get remove xubuntu-desktop && apt-get autoremove xubuntu-desktop, will that be sufficient? [23:44] Read the link the bot gave you, it has it in there (And isn't that) [23:44] I've never understood why the packages aren't tied to the meta package to make removal easy [23:46] Understandable, I purge abiword, gmusicbrowser, and many others which removes xubuntu-desktop, would be a huge pain if that removed "Xubuntu" too.
