acolytetojippityquick question, do i need to do anything special in order to install 12.04 to a portable hard drive, and have it be bootable?  I would still need to be able to use the remaining space on the drive for storage and that space must be accessible via Windows.05:43

dolphin194Can you share a connection through ethernet without a crossover?22:00
holsteindolphin194: with a router...22:03
dolphin194no22:03
holsteinyeah, you can22:03
dolphin194direct link between 2 ubuntu machines22:03
holsteinive always had access to a router or switch22:03
holsteinat some point, i would consider just cutting the wires and making a crossover cable22:04
dolphin194I have a laptop that is connected to our net via wifi, and i wanna share that connection with a computer that doesnt have a wifi dongle22:04
dolphin194It works when i connect my macbook with the other laptop22:05
holsteindolphin194: i dont think that'll require a crossover cable22:05
holsteinyou want to make the laptop a router at that point.. kind of22:05
dolphin194pretty much22:05
holsteinbring the internet in over wifi, and share like a switch the lan port22:06
dolphin194pretty much22:06
dolphin194yeah22:06
holsteindolphin194: i would just read about making a router22:06
dolphin194but theres an issue with making the laptop a router22:06
dolphin194its a webserver22:06
holsteindolphin194: at some point, you might just want to get the wallet out.. parts are so cheap these days.. you might just save a lot of time and headache with 10 bucks22:07
dolphin194all i wanna do is link the 2 computers together with a non-crossover22:07
holsteini think i would expect it to be like http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1663788 only kind of backwards22:08
dolphin194It works when i do it with my macbook22:08
holsteinnot sure what the webserver will do22:08
holsteindolphin194: i would just use OSX then22:08
dolphin194how do i put OSX on my dell...22:08
holsteindolphin194: or you can refer to that guide, and try switching the info22:09
dolphin194ill mess with it22:09
holsteini mean its all possible.. its just going to be challenging to find that information, since its not common22:09
dolphin194alright22:09
dolphin194thanks anyway22:09
holsteinusually folks want a wifi router out of the laptop they have22:09
dolphin194ill figure it out22:09
holsteinbut, that will be similar.. just backwards22:10
dolphin194yeah, turning the laptop into a wifi dongle22:10
holsteini might look at a router solution.. something on a live CD22:10
holsteindolphin194: turning the laptop into a wireless router22:10
holsteinnot really a dongle22:10
dolphin194alright ill get it sorted out though22:10
dolphin194one comp doesnt have an OS on it right now22:10
dolphin194was just wondering if it could be done22:11
holsteinallowing you to do exactly what you would do with a router.. wire it up to the modem, and make a wifi access point22:11
holsteindolphin194: its all open.. if the hardware supports it, anything can be done22:11
dolphin194well the computers are Dell PowerEdge 2650 and Inspiron Mini 9v22:11
holsteinsure.. but the chipsets are all over the place from just one of those boxes22:12
dolphin194yeah22:12
holsteinstill, i think you'll be able to do it.. i just dont know how easy it will be22:12
holsteinand ive always just had a bunch of spare harware laying about...22:12
holsteingood luck. i would try the mailing list for main ubuntu.... or askubuntu22:13
dolphin194i got a bit of an issue23:03
