Guest9119Hi can anyone help me with a ubuntu 12.04 issue I have. Maybe someone has had a similar issue with studio, or could lead me to a room that could help me. I have an Acer aspire 5334 and I've just installed ubuntu 12.04, and my laptop screen is'nt working. I've tried a few scenarios I've seen on the forums and I haven't had any Luck.01:14
len-dtGuest9119, I am not sure which acer that is, but as happens I do have a similar problem (maybe)01:17
len-dtI have a netbook (aspire one) that I have been running 12.04 on almost 6 months just fine.01:18
len-dtabout a month ago I started it and no video... not even the bios screen!01:18
len-dtThe backlight changes as it should. I plugged an external monitor in and rebooted and then both monitors work... then I could unplug the external monitor and the internal would keep working till the next reboot.01:20
len-dtstill working on it. There is a problem mentioned to do with the bios "forgetting" about it's own video (not just linux BTW)01:20
len-dtThey sugest to reload the bios, but my machine is not quite the same model so I have to find the right bios.01:21

smartboyhwFloatingGoat, maybe lets help cf1234 and I don't have time for music I got to study for my test tmr09:55
FloatingGoatgood point09:55
FloatingGoatidk what he means by system monitor09:55
smartboyhwcf1234, maybe Conky is good:D09:56
FloatingGoatwait09:56
FloatingGoattheres a system monitor in U studio by default, no?09:56
smartboyhwFloatingGoat, yes but conky is a good one:09:57
smartboyhw:D09:57
FloatingGoatcf1234: alt+f2 and try running the command "gnome-system-monitor"09:58
cf1234I only started with this OS today and I don't think theres a performance monitor?09:58
FloatingGoatyeah there is cf1234 try what i just said09:58
FloatingGoatyou can find it in the menus or launch it that way09:59
FloatingGoatlooking at my system monitor it says i only have 1.9 GB of memory10:00

FloatingGoatcf1234: yeah no problem, i didnt know for sure if it came default because i also installed ubuntu desktop on top of it.10:01
FloatingGoatit being ubuntu studio10:02
cf1234I am pretty new to linux I really like this distribution though10:03
mrakywhich gtk is better, ATI or nvidiia?13:44
holsteinmraky: you mean, typically which graphics hardware is better suppored in linux? ati or nvidia?14:21
holsteinin my experience, the ATI ones usually "just work" with the open driver a little better14:21
holsteini find the nvidia proprietary drivers to be "better" in my opinion14:21
holsteinmraky: it really just depends on the specific device14:21
holsteinmraky: i say, google search "ubuntu"+the specific hardware14:22
holsteinmraky: search ubuntu.. not ubuntustudio or lubuntu or xubuntu.. the kernel is the kernel14:22
mrakyholstein,  yes, somewhere I read, thad Linus say: f**k you nvidia...14:22
holsteinmraky: with steam coming to linux, thing are likey going to improve quickly14:23
holsteinof course, all hardware willl "work" with the vesa driver... its really only an isssue when you want 3d and/or gaming14:24
holsteinthe integrated intel stuff that is typically well supported out of the box is usually just fine for all my needs14:25
holsteini run ubuntustudio 10.04 with an nvidia card for dual head14:25
mrakyholstein,  I ask cause integrated from intell have problems with gnome3...14:28
holsteinmraky: shouldnt14:28
holsteinmraky: i would troubleshoot the error there a bit14:28
holsteinmraky: i would try broadening your searches to "ubuntu" or "xubuntu"14:29
holsteini would try finding the mailing list for the ubuntu gnome remix project14:29
holsteinmaybe explore the mint gnome help resources14:29
holsteinailo uses gnome, but is not here right now14:30
holsteinif that intel card works or has worked for you performance wise, i wouldnt just throw hardware at the problem right off14:31
holsteinits its a problematic chipset then moving on to a graphics card might be the path of least resistance14:31
holsteinanyways... you can start with a pastebin of lspci14:32
holstein!paste | mraky14:32
ubottumraky: For posting multi-line texts into the channel, please use http://paste.ubuntu.com | To post !screenshots use http://imagebin.org/?page=add | !pastebinit to paste directly from command line | Make sure you give us the URL for your paste - see also the channel topic.14:32
mrakyholstein,  some integrated graphics work better,  some no, then they work in fail/classic mode..14:32
holsteinmraky: my integrated graphics are well supported.. though i have seen a few that were more complex14:33
holsteinthere are a few intel ones that are challening14:33
mrakyholstein,  thx..14:33
holsteinmraky: you can look at lspci, and search, or share here, or #xubuntu or #ubuntu14:33
holsteini will be out for a while and this channel can be slow14:34
holsteinim not kicking you out.. im just offereing you a quicker  and more appropriate support avenue14:34
mrakyok.14:34
holsteinanyways.. good luck, and feel free and share the output of lspci and someone can help you either get proper 3d support for your intel device, or help you decide that its not going to be able to be supported..14:35
holsteini'll pop in and check on the info as time allows...14:35
casper_i'm thinking about installing ubuntu studio20:57
casper_currently using FL and sony creator20:58
casper_on a windows 6420:58
casper_will this run on a 64bit system okay?20:58
casper_and what do you think the learning curve will be on the delivered software based on what i'm using now20:59
len-dtcasper_, Those are all good questions.20:59
len-dtstudio has been tested on 64 bit systems without problems.21:00
len-dtI have not used any windows software so it is hard for me to know what the differences are21:00
len-dtIf FL is what I think it is, the closest thing is LMMS.21:01
len-dtIt doesn't come with studio but installs easy using software center21:02
casper_okay, cool21:02
casper_apt-get is available in this distro?21:02
len-dtYes.21:02
casper_is there anything like 'pro tools'?21:03
len-dtUbuntustudio is ubuntu with some extra apps and a bit different DE than ubuntu (more like xubuntu)21:03
casper_gotcha21:03
len-dtI don't really know pro tools well enough to compare.21:04
casper_k...21:04
len-dtThe best DAW for audio recording is Ardour21:04
casper_i like the idea of this distro though21:04
casper_especially with it linked to an irc channel21:05
len-dtWe ship qtractor for midi tracking though it is possible to record audio tracks on that too.21:05
len-dtThe #opensourcemusicians irc channel is good as well.21:05
casper_thanks21:06
casper_i appreciate it21:06
len-dtSorry I can't be more help, but I gave up on windows at 3.1 or so and have never looked back.21:06
casper_i'm using a tascam us-122  korg k61, korg nanokontrol21:07
len-dtI would try it with the LIVE ISO to make sure that interface works.21:08
casper_that's okay, i'm actually asking for a friend, he's stuck on windows, i've been using linux since about halfway thru XP, now with vista/7 i'm linux all the way21:08
casper_k21:08
casper_do the devices generally work?21:09
len-dtI've found that making a bootable USB stick is the best way to run.21:09
casper_i try to get everyone on linux, i did convert one friend21:09
holsteini used to21:09
casper_yeah, can it be persistent?21:09
holsteinnow i only do it on special request21:09
len-dtI used to try and do that21:09
holsteinif i want a persistent USB stick, i just install to the USB stick21:10
len-dtBut found I become the goto person for every little problem21:10
casper_that's me on windows21:10
holsteini just found they want the applications they used to use21:10
holsteinand that fine21:10
len-dtwhich devices are you talking about? Most desktop stuff works. The sound interfaces are mostly supported if they are pci. Firewire or USB some are and some not it depends how close the interface is to the usb spec.21:12
casper_holstein, is it persistent by default, i've found that to be the hard part of booting to a mem stick21:12
len-dtThe USB installer allows you to pick when you print the USB stick21:13
casper_my buddy has this midi controller and a keyboard that he connects... all that stuff works?21:13
len-dtIt defaults to persistent with 1G space for that.21:14
casper_i haven't made a bootable mem stick in a while, probably has gotten better21:14
casper_cool21:14
holsteincasper_: i just do a normal install to the usb stick.. normal installs are persistent21:15
holsteini never need that though.. so i just use a live USB made with unetbootin21:15
casper_okay21:15
holsteincasper_: "better" is a matter of opinion21:15
holsteincasper_: the USB sticks boot the isos21:16
holsteinthe isos have "progressed"21:16
holsteini like some of the progress and not some of the other21:16
holsteinwill you like it? i have no idea21:16
holsteinwill it do what you want? ineveitably, since its all open, it either will, or you can make it do what you want21:16
casper_he's asking about VST (expansions)21:16
casper_yeah, that's what i like about it21:17
holsteincasper_: linuxVST?21:17
casper_he said it's like adding more synthesizers21:18
casper_the vst's that is21:18
holsteinsure.. linux VST's?21:18
casper_i guess21:18
casper_sound or effect generator21:19
casper_he's got a collection of them now, and he's worried about losing them if he converts to a linux system21:19
casper_sorry, i'm not well versed in this and i'm trying to interpret what he's telling me21:20
holsteincasper_: ask him21:21
casper_he's trying to get into all media audio/video/print but he has no money21:21
holsteincasper_: i do not use software that is made for windows in linux personally21:21
holsteincasper_: so i have no experience21:21
casper_k21:21
holsteinthe KXstudio project works a lot with windows VST's21:21
holsteincasper_: can that guy use the fancy VTS's hes purchased (or stolen)... depends21:21
holsteinhe would have to try the in wine... i think mostly folks try and use native software21:22
casper_gotcha21:22
casper_thanks for your help21:26
