[01:14] Hi can anyone help me with a ubuntu 12.04 issue I have. Maybe someone has had a similar issue with studio, or could lead me to a room that could help me. I have an Acer aspire 5334 and I've just installed ubuntu 12.04, and my laptop screen is'nt working. I've tried a few scenarios I've seen on the forums and I haven't had any Luck. [01:17] Guest9119, I am not sure which acer that is, but as happens I do have a similar problem (maybe) [01:18] I have a netbook (aspire one) that I have been running 12.04 on almost 6 months just fine. [01:18] about a month ago I started it and no video... not even the bios screen! [01:20] The backlight changes as it should. I plugged an external monitor in and rebooted and then both monitors work... then I could unplug the external monitor and the internal would keep working till the next reboot. [01:20] still working on it. There is a problem mentioned to do with the bios "forgetting" about it's own video (not just linux BTW) [01:21] They sugest to reload the bios, but my machine is not quite the same model so I have to find the right bios. [04:57] eyy [09:53] hello [09:53] hi cf1234 [09:54] Anyone know a good system performance monitor for U Studio? [09:54] cf1234, system performance hmm, what type? [09:54] smartboyhw: want to hear this song of mine [09:55] just a general monitor like perfmon for windows? [09:55] FloatingGoat, maybe lets help cf1234 and I don't have time for music I got to study for my test tmr [09:55] good point [09:55] idk what he means by system monitor [09:56] cf1234, maybe Conky is good:D [09:56] wait [09:56] theres a system monitor in U studio by default, no? [09:57] FloatingGoat, yes but conky is a good one: [09:57] :D [09:58] cf1234: alt+f2 and try running the command "gnome-system-monitor" [09:58] I only started with this OS today and I don't think theres a performance monitor? [09:58] yeah there is cf1234 try what i just said [09:59] you can find it in the menus or launch it that way [10:00] looking at my system monitor it says i only have 1.9 GB of memory [10:00] I wonder if one of my sticks got fried or something [10:00] I did drop this comp from like 4 feet [10:01] Ah I see I typed it in my terminal and it asks me to install it, thanks lads [10:01] cf1234: yeah no problem, i didnt know for sure if it came default because i also installed ubuntu desktop on top of it. [10:02] it being ubuntu studio [10:03] I am pretty new to linux I really like this distribution though [13:44] which gtk is better, ATI or nvidiia? [14:21] mraky: you mean, typically which graphics hardware is better suppored in linux? ati or nvidia? [14:21] in my experience, the ATI ones usually "just work" with the open driver a little better [14:21] i find the nvidia proprietary drivers to be "better" in my opinion [14:21] mraky: it really just depends on the specific device [14:22] mraky: i say, google search "ubuntu"+the specific hardware [14:22] mraky: search ubuntu.. not ubuntustudio or lubuntu or xubuntu.. the kernel is the kernel [14:22] holstein, yes, somewhere I read, thad Linus say: f**k you nvidia... [14:23] mraky: with steam coming to linux, thing are likey going to improve quickly [14:24] of course, all hardware willl "work" with the vesa driver... its really only an isssue when you want 3d and/or gaming [14:25] the integrated intel stuff that is typically well supported out of the box is usually just fine for all my needs [14:25] i run ubuntustudio 10.04 with an nvidia card for dual head [14:28] holstein, I ask cause integrated from intell have problems with gnome3... [14:28] mraky: shouldnt [14:28] mraky: i would troubleshoot the error there a bit [14:29] mraky: i would try broadening your searches to "ubuntu" or "xubuntu" [14:29] i would try finding the mailing list for the ubuntu gnome remix project [14:29] maybe explore the mint gnome help resources [14:30] ailo uses gnome, but is not here right now [14:31] if that intel card works or has worked for you performance wise, i wouldnt just throw hardware at the problem right off [14:31] its its a problematic chipset then moving on to a graphics card might be the path of least resistance [14:32] anyways... you can start with a pastebin of lspci [14:32] !paste | mraky [14:32] mraky: For posting multi-line texts into the channel, please use http://paste.ubuntu.com | To post !screenshots use http://imagebin.org/?page=add | !pastebinit to paste directly from command line | Make sure you give us the URL for your paste - see also the channel topic. [14:32] holstein, some integrated graphics work better, some no, then they work in fail/classic mode.. [14:33] mraky: my integrated graphics are well supported.. though i have seen a few that were more complex [14:33] there are a few intel ones that are challening [14:33] holstein, thx.. [14:33] mraky: you can look at lspci, and search, or share here, or #xubuntu or #ubuntu [14:34] i will be out for a while and this channel can be slow [14:34] im not kicking you out.. im just offereing you a quicker and more appropriate support avenue [14:34] ok. [14:35] anyways.. good luck, and feel free and share the output of lspci and someone can help you either get proper 3d support for your intel device, or help you decide that its not going to be able to be supported.. [14:35] i'll pop in and check on the info as time allows... [20:57] i'm thinking about installing ubuntu studio [20:58] currently using FL and sony creator [20:58] on a windows 64 [20:58] will this run on a 64bit system okay? [20:59] and what do you think the learning curve will be on the delivered software based on what i'm using now [20:59] casper_, Those are all good questions. [21:00] studio has been tested on 64 bit systems without problems. [21:00] I have not used any windows software so it is hard for me to know what the differences are [21:01] If FL is what I think it is, the closest thing is LMMS. [21:02] It doesn't come with studio but installs easy using software center [21:02] okay, cool [21:02] apt-get is available in this distro? [21:02] Yes. [21:03] is there anything like 'pro tools'? [21:03] Ubuntustudio is ubuntu with some extra apps and a bit different DE than ubuntu (more like xubuntu) [21:03] gotcha [21:04] I don't really know pro tools well enough to compare. [21:04] k... [21:04] The best DAW for audio recording is Ardour [21:04] i like the idea of this distro though [21:05] especially with it linked to an irc channel [21:05] We ship qtractor for midi tracking though it is possible to record audio tracks on that too. [21:05] The #opensourcemusicians irc channel is good as well. [21:06] thanks [21:06] i appreciate it [21:06] Sorry I can't be more help, but I gave up on windows at 3.1 or so and have never looked back. [21:07] i'm using a tascam us-122 korg k61, korg nanokontrol [21:08] I would try it with the LIVE ISO to make sure that interface works. [21:08] that's okay, i'm actually asking for a friend, he's stuck on windows, i've been using linux since about halfway thru XP, now with vista/7 i'm linux all the way [21:08] k [21:09] do the devices generally work? [21:09] I've found that making a bootable USB stick is the best way to run. [21:09] i try to get everyone on linux, i did convert one friend [21:09] i used to [21:09] yeah, can it be persistent? [21:09] now i only do it on special request [21:09] I used to try and do that [21:10] if i want a persistent USB stick, i just install to the USB stick [21:10] But found I become the goto person for every little problem [21:10] that's me on windows [21:10] i just found they want the applications they used to use [21:10] and that fine [21:12] which devices are you talking about? Most desktop stuff works. The sound interfaces are mostly supported if they are pci. Firewire or USB some are and some not it depends how close the interface is to the usb spec. [21:12] holstein, is it persistent by default, i've found that to be the hard part of booting to a mem stick [21:13] The USB installer allows you to pick when you print the USB stick [21:13] my buddy has this midi controller and a keyboard that he connects... all that stuff works? [21:14] It defaults to persistent with 1G space for that. [21:14] i haven't made a bootable mem stick in a while, probably has gotten better [21:14] cool [21:15] casper_: i just do a normal install to the usb stick.. normal installs are persistent [21:15] i never need that though.. so i just use a live USB made with unetbootin [21:15] okay [21:15] casper_: "better" is a matter of opinion [21:16] casper_: the USB sticks boot the isos [21:16] the isos have "progressed" [21:16] i like some of the progress and not some of the other [21:16] will you like it? i have no idea [21:16] will it do what you want? ineveitably, since its all open, it either will, or you can make it do what you want [21:16] he's asking about VST (expansions) [21:17] yeah, that's what i like about it [21:17] casper_: linuxVST? [21:18] he said it's like adding more synthesizers [21:18] the vst's that is [21:18] sure.. linux VST's? [21:18] i guess [21:19] sound or effect generator [21:19] he's got a collection of them now, and he's worried about losing them if he converts to a linux system [21:20] sorry, i'm not well versed in this and i'm trying to interpret what he's telling me [21:21] casper_: ask him [21:21] he's trying to get into all media audio/video/print but he has no money [21:21] casper_: i do not use software that is made for windows in linux personally [21:21] casper_: so i have no experience [21:21] k [21:21] the KXstudio project works a lot with windows VST's [21:21] casper_: can that guy use the fancy VTS's hes purchased (or stolen)... depends [21:22] he would have to try the in wine... i think mostly folks try and use native software [21:22] gotcha [21:26] thanks for your help
