Kanohi, 64 bit missing from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.5.7-quantal/07:38
Kanoalso missing from 3.4.1407:40
marijnschJust installed 12.04.1 yesterday on hp elitebook 8470p. Unfortunately wireless doesn't work. Something wrong with the firmware it seems. I've tried upgrading to kernels from the kernel ppa, but it hasn't helped so far. Maybe because it is instead linux-firmware that needs to be updated. The issue is reportedly fixed in quantal. How do I go about making it work in precise?08:30
apwmarijnsch, if it is missing firmware it may well show up in dmesg output as it tries to load08:53
marijnschapw: not missing, but some problem with the combination firmware and kernel driver (iwlwifi).08:54
ohsixweren't some iwlwifi models or something gone unmaintained about a year ago?08:56
apwohsix, some were lesss loved indeed.  but if it works in quantal its probabally not one of those09:12
apwmarijnsch, it would be good to confirm it does work in Q, and if you have seen a bug fixing it in Q all the better09:12
marijnschapw: can I try the Q kernel alone without upgradiing too much else? if yes, how do I do that?09:14
apwmarijnsch, the easiest might be to try a live cd09:14
marijnschapw: I'd rather try to upgrade kernel and/or firmware directly09:15
apwyou should be able to directly install the kernel for testing, i'd not take the firmware at the same time09:16
marijnschapw: I already tried a few kernels for precise such as kernel http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.4-rc6-precise/ and it didn't help...09:20
apwmarijnsch, well you could try a 3.5.6 or so, that is basically quantal09:21
marijnschapw: they don't have amd64 kernels though... I don't think it would work with my amd64 userland09:23
apwmarijnsch, ahhh i am working on that right now, build tools issue09:23
marijnschapw: think there is any use in trying the pre-proposed kernel?09:27
apwi should have these fixes and build within the hour09:38
marijnschapw: alright, no hurry09:43
apwmarijnsch, ok 3.5.6/7 have amd64 now10:33
apwmarijnsch, ok 3.5.6/7 have amd64 now10:47

marijnschapw: alright, let me give it a try11:18
marijnschapw: this 3.5.7 kernel doesn't seem to have iwlwifi driver...11:25
apwodd11:26
apwmarijnsch, i see it in the binary packages, did you install linux-image-extra11:39
apw-rw-r--r-- root/root    661608 2012-10-13 10:03 ./lib/modules/3.5.7-030507-generic/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/iwlwifi/iwlwifi.ko11:39
marijnschapw: indeed I did not11:41
marijnschso, I've been testing an old module with new kernels the whole time and now the mismatch got too big for it to even load...11:42
marijnschapw: it still won't work11:58
apwso then it might be worth trying an update to linux-firmware11:59
apwyou get that from the librarian11:59
marijnschthe librarian? :)12:00
marijnschapw: ?12:23
apwlaunchpad librarian12:23
apwhttps://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux12:24
marijnschapw: not sure what to do with that. I don't see linux-firmware there.12:43
apwmarijnsch, https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-firmware13:17
marijnschapw: 1.95 also doesn't seem to have amd64 builds13:37
apwmarijnsch, linux-firmware isn't arch specific, _all is useable on any arch13:39
marijnschapw: linux-firmware-1.95 seems to contain the same version of wireless firmware: [   10.448112] iwlwifi 0000:24:00.0: loaded firmware version 18.168.6.114:17
marijnschalso I see no change in behavior14:17
apwmarijnsch, then i'd say the chances your issue is fixed in quantal is near 014:17
marijnschapw: yes, that is starting to seem unlikely :(14:18
apwmarijnsch, so you need to file a bug against 'linux' (ubuntu-bug linux) and describe the symptoms14:18
