SpamapS\Master\Pehden\: not a dumb question. Its fairly involved.. you usually have to use a proxy like squid or something like class based queueing00:10

basil_Hi I'm trying to install mod_security on Ubuntu 11.10, and I've done the apt- install thing. But the tutorial asks me to compile it, but I don't know what directory it installed to. How do I work that out?03:38
holsteinbasil_: you should be able to look and see what command ran03:44
holsteinyou can link the tutorial and i'll see if i can make sense of it03:45
basil_This was the cmd - $ sudo apt-get install automake g++ apache2-threaded-dev dpkg-dev libxml2 libxml2-dev03:47
basil_tutorial - http://darrynvt.wordpress.com/2012/04/03/how-to-install-mod_security-apache2-ubuntu-11-10/03:47
holsteinbasil_: that just installs those03:47
holsteinbasil_: that doesnt compile anything (by hand)03:47
basil_OK...must have skipped a bit - saw the apt-get things03:48
holsteinbasil_: apt-get is a way of managing pacakges from the repos.. you can use apt to install them03:48
holsteinbasil_: from that page "Now that the mod_security binary is installed in your Apache 2 modules folder"03:50
holsteinbasil_: the apt-get install command is installing dependencies, tools, etc...03:51

RoyK!email13:10

RoyKcluelessperson: I think the "preferred" way is dovecot, but I find that rather strange. I've used courier and cyrus - see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MailServer13:12
RoyKanyway - you can use either13:12

Nielwho can help me with setting up routing for OpenVPN?14:53
ikoniaNiel: you need to give info if you want people to help14:55
ikoniayou where just told that in #ubuntu and don't seem to have grasped it14:55
NielWell, I got all my ports open on my VPS, but only applications on the server-side can use the ports, if a client for example starts a minecraft server on port 25565 it won't open on the VPN, and I want the ports to open.14:56
ikoniawhat do you mean "it won't open on the vpn"14:58
Nielthe ports don't open on the vpn if the client uses a port14:58
ikoniawhat are you talking about14:58
Nielvpn14:58
ikoniayou use a VPN to make a connection to a server on a specific port14:58
ikoniayou are then on that network14:58
ikoniayou don't use the vpn to open specific ports14:58
Nielyes14:58
Nieli know that14:59
Nielbut I want the user of the VPN to be able to use a port from the VPS14:59
ikoniaright, so what have you done to validate the port is not available ?14:59
qman__you would have to create a new rule, on the fly, to forward the desired port to a given VPN client15:00
NielI tried canyouseeme etc, but my host says all the ports are open15:00
qman__that's not part of any built in functionality15:00
ikoniathe vpn has nothing to do with open ports, it just connects you to that network15:00
qman__and that has nothing to do with VPN15:00
qman__it'd be the same on your home network15:01
ikoniaif your network is not open - you need to address that at what ever is blocking your network's level/device15:01
Nielif you connect to the VPN, you have another IP, then I want to accept an incoming connection through that IP on port 2556515:01
qman__from where15:02
ikoniaNiel: if the network is open as you say, that will happen15:02
Nielyes, but it doesn't happen15:02
qman__from the internet, or from other VPN clients15:02
ikoniaNiel: then it's not open15:02
Nieli created an iptables rule for it15:02
ikoniaNiel: then it's not open15:02
Nielif i move the apache port to 25565 it does say it's open15:02
ikoniawhat says it's open ?15:03
Nielcanyouseeme.org15:03
ikoniaNiel: ok, so what's listening on port 25565 when apache is not ?15:03
Nielthe server15:03
ikoniawhat server15:03
Nielthe minecraft server on the windows pc15:03
ikoniawhat application is listening on 2556515:04
ikoniaNiel: no, the server on your PC does not listen on the remote servers port15:04
ikoniaNiel: the remote server must have something listening on it locally15:04
ikoniaotherwise there is nothing to connect to15:04
Nielhow can I fix it then15:04
qman__or be NATting that port to something else15:04
ikoniaNiel: make an application (like apache) listen on the port15:04
Nieli have routing disabled in OpenVPN panel, does it have something to do with that?15:04
qman__or, you know, run the minecraft server on your server on the internet15:04
ikoniaNiel: that way the client (your windows PC) has something to connect to15:05
NielI want this: The windows pc hosts a minecraft server and is connected to the VPS (openvpn), and when someone tries to join the minecraft server it connects to the IP from the VPN on port 2556515:07
Nielis that possible?15:09
qman__what do they connect to when they join the minecraft server15:09
qman__and where are they connecting from15:10
Nielthe IP from the VPS ( OpenVPN )15:10
Nieland from a windows PC15:10
qman__no, from the internet, or as other VPN clients15:10
lordievaderNiel: There is no possibility to run the Minecraft server on the VPS?15:10
Nieli use the vps as VPN15:10
qman__lordievader, that's the right way to do it, but I guess he's dead set15:10
lordievaderNiel: It's not set in stone that the VPS can only do VPS, it can also host your game.15:11
NielI don't want the server to be hosted on the vps15:11
Nieli just want to use the ip to host the minecraft server15:11
lordievaderKind of silly to throw everything though a tunnel..15:12
Nielmmh15:12
Nielbut its possible right?15:12
qman__in theory, probably too slow to actually use15:12
NielI just want to know how to do it15:13
qman__there's a second problem15:13
qman__your windows PC needs to know to route traffic to the internet through the VPN15:13
NielI have the VPN setup and I can browse the internet through the VPN15:13
qman__so for this setup to work, your windows PC must send all its internet traffic through the VPN, not just the minecraft server's15:14
Nielit's just the ports that are a problem15:14
Nieli know15:14
Nieli want the traffic to go through the vpn15:14
Nieli need to open the port 25565, so that the client can use the port15:14
qman__it is open15:15
qman__what you need to do is NAT it to your windows PC15:15
NielI have this option from the OpenVPN panel:15:15
qman__I don't know what this openVPN panel is15:15
qman__but this has nothing to do with openVPN15:15
NielRouting Should VPN clients have access to private subnets (non-public networks on the server side)?15:15
Nielthen i have15:16
Niel3 option: no, yes-using NAT, and Yes-using routing15:16
qman__completely different, nothing to do with this15:16
Nielthe traffic already goes through the vpn15:17
Nieli'm connected to the VPN, i start my minecraft server on port 25565, and then i check if the port is open and it says closed15:17
qman__that's because you haven't set up the port forward15:17
Nielon my vps?15:18
qman__yes15:18
Nielbut all ports are open, i asked my host to open them all15:18
qman__again15:18
qman__nothing to do with this15:18
lordievaderNiel: But not forwarded to the internet.15:18
qman__the port IS open, but it's not forwarded15:18
Nieloh15:18
Nieli get it15:18
Nielso i forward it with iptables?15:18
qman__yes15:18
Nielwhat if i disable iptables?15:19
qman__then you will have no rules15:19
qman__and no forward15:19
qman__and probably no VPN15:19
Nieland how do i port forward all ports if that is possible15:19
qman__it's not15:20
qman__stuff won't work if you do that15:20
qman__you only need to forward one port, 2556515:20
Nielok15:20
Nieli think i disabled iptables with ufw15:21
Nieldo you know how to enable it?15:21
qman__there is no disable/enable, iptables is compiled into the kernel15:21
qman__you can only either have rules, or not have rules15:21
Nielsudo ufw disable15:21
qman__ufw isn't iptables, it's a front end15:21
qman__and ufw can't do port forwarding (at least not last I checked)15:22
Nielroot@niel:~# sudo ufw enable Command may disrupt existing ssh connections. Proceed with operation (y|n)? y ERROR: problem running ufw-init15:22
Nielhow do i re enable15:22
qman__don't15:22
Nieloh, can I leave it disabled?15:22
Nielis there a command to reset iptables to it's standard settings15:23
Nieliptables -A INPUT -p tcp -m state --state NEW --dport 25565 -i eth1 -j ACCEPT <- is this the command to port forward?15:24
ikoniathis whole concept is flawed15:24
qman__no15:28
qman__to set up the port forward, you will need several rules, and your client will have to have a static IP on the VPN15:28
qman__and that rule is not one of them15:28
Niellol this will never work15:29
ikoniacorrect, it's a very bad idea15:32

ikoniaNiel: I think you need to address your requirements15:35
ikoniait's a very bad idea15:35
NielI just want to use the IP and open ports15:35
lordievaderNiel: Host the Minecraft server on the VPS.15:35
ikoniawhy not just use open DNS and get people to connect directly to your laptop15:36
ikoniadoing this over the VPN is wrong15:36
Nielive seen vpn providers that give you an option in the control panel to open a port on the VPN15:36
ikoniait's nothing to do with an "open port"15:36
Nielport forward15:36
ikoniathen use one of those vps providers if you feel it's the right thing to do15:36
ikoniait's the wrong thing to do15:36
NielI bought the vps for VPN, not for hosting games, and it doesn't have enough ram for a gameserver15:36
Nielit's not only for game servers15:37
lordievaderNiel: Then do as ikonia says.15:37
ikoniayou bought a vps just to do vpn...but you didn't buy one of the ones that offer the solution you want15:37
ikoniayou bought one which doesn't have the port forwarding option you want15:37

Pinguin123My /boot is mounted on a mirroring raid of /dev/sda1 and /dev/sdb1. The rest of the hard-disk is is also in RAID as /dev/sda2 and /dev/sdb2 and part of an LVM-setup. My backup HD is /dev/sdc. During the upgrade I got the following error: GRUB failed to install to the following devices: /dev/sda  /dev/sdb Do you want to continue anyway? If you do, your computer may not start up properly.  Writing GRUB to boot device failed - continue? After this I16:41
Pinguin123got the option to select where I would like to install GRUB: /dev/sda (1000204 MB; SAMSUNG_HD103SJ),  /dev/sdb (1000204 MB; SAMSUNG_HD103SJ) /dev/sdc (250000 MB; WDC_WD2500JS-75N) /dev/dm-0 (64424 MB; vgpasen-slash). After selecting one of /dev/sda or /dev/sdb I get the error message /usr/sbin/grub-setup: warn: Your core.img is unusually large.  It won't fit in the embedding area..  /usr/sbin/grub-setup: error: embedding is not possible, but this16:41
Pinguin123is required when the root device is on a RAID array or LVM volume. I tried as an alternative GRUB-legacy, but isntalling this also gave errors. As a last resort I now attempt to use LILO. Installing this with the "boot = /dev/md6" (/dev/md6 is /dev/sda1 en /dev/sdb1 in raid) and "raid-extra-boot = mbr-only" options in lilo.conf. This generated the following output: sudo lilo -v Using BIOS device code 0x80 for RAID boot blocks Reading boot sector16:41

Pinguin123Sorry for the multiline, I formatted the question as a single-line one in VIM.16:42
RoyKPinguin123: that's ok - noone can say if the system will boot up correctly if grub gives that error, but you can try. if it fails, you need console access and perhaps a CD or a usb plug with the 12.04 installer16:44
metalballHey everyone, got a question about ubuntu-server and VirtualBox16:45
metalballafter cloning a VM with installed ubuntu-server, the distro hangs on boot with network messages: "Waiting for network configuration..." and then "Waiting for 60 seconds more..."16:46
metalballafter that it logs in without eth016:46
metalballonly lo interface16:46
metalballwhen commenting eth0 lines from /etc/network/interfaces, distro boots faster, but still without eth016:46
Pinguin123RoyK: installing it from the 12.04 installer will fix it?16:46
metalballI guess that happens because the MAC of the ethernet device changes, but I have no idea how to "sync" the distro with the new ethernet16:46
RoyKPinguin123: no, but you can probably fix grub manually after booting the fix mode from the server install cd16:47
RoyKmetalball: wierd - I've installed ubuntu on vbox a few dozen times without issues16:47
metalballRoyK: the original installation is doing fine, and the clones also, until I'm changing the MAC for the network device, to get IP from router16:48
RoyKmetalball: oh16:48
RoyKthat's common16:48
RoyKvi /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules16:49
RoyKand remove the config there16:49
RoyKdebian/ubuntu links the MAC address to ethX16:49
metalballRoyK: mm, so if I'll delete the file, the distro will rebuild on boot? or I have to manually match the MACs?16:50
RoyKyes16:50
RoyKit'll rebuild it16:50
metalballcool, I'll try16:51
RoyKhaven't tried removing it, though, just removing the config in it16:51
metalballwell, it's safe to remove :)16:52
metalballit's rebuilding the file16:52
metalballawesome16:52
metalballRoyK: thank you very much16:55

daniellog_Hey, I was wondering if there is some script or something to allow my housemates to download nzb's from nzbmatrix without giving them my login details or me having to do it? like some automated system18:52
nemo_nihilanyone here that could help me with nohup?19:01
nemo_nihili am trying to run $sudo su -l www-data -c nohup [command] and I keep getting the error "nohup: missing operand"19:03
nemo_nihilbut it works if I move the nohup [command] to the next line19:03
qman__don't sudo su19:06
nemo_nihilhow do i do it then?19:06
qman__read sudo's manual and find out which switches are right for your purpose19:06
qman__sudo su is bad practice19:07
qman__and could very well be why what you're doing isn't working19:07
qman__use sudo or su, not both at once19:07
qman__also, your nohup command probably needs to be in quotes19:07
nemo_nihilthanks for the help qman__19:10
nemo_nihili need it to be 'nohup [command]'19:10
qman__using sudo su is like doing "sudo sudo" or su -c "su"19:11
qman__you'd never do that because it's silly19:11
qman__and unnecessarily complicates things19:11
nemo_nihilok, i will try to simplify that as well19:12

hggdhDaviey: well, you *have* to, right? I never seen an installer not to end in a reboot...21:03
hggdhDaviey: so, is this a candidate for a respin?21:04
