zyltoiddoes anyone know what applet xubuntu uses for the date/time on the panel?00:51
recon_lapzyltoid: the date/time applet ?00:52
zyltoidrecon_lap, if you click on the time it shows a dropdown calendar00:52
zyltoidthe default xfce is just time00:52
recon_lapzyltoid: yep00:52
zyltoidi was wondering what application does that. or is the default patched to do that?00:53
Unit193xfce4-datetime-plugin does it like that, it's what I'm using.00:54
recon_lapzyltoid: dont remember doing anything special with the datetime applet, that is the way it works?00:54
zyltoidah you're right. the default just shows the time (no dropdown). just had to add it00:55
zyltoidwhat i mean by default is the item that's used with a default xfce install00:56
zyltoidthanks00:56
zyltoidwhich is just clock00:56
zyltoidthe updated  theme in 12.10 is nice :D00:59
vacuoushey I have apt removed xubuntu desktop, and very little seems to be using ram yet in top it still says I'm using half a gig01:39
vacuousis there a reason it's still eating all my ram?01:39

neqerrlvlHello. Xubuntu 12.04.1LTS here and 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03) not working half the time. sudo aptitude --purge reinstall linux-sound-base alsa-base alsa-utils linux-image-`uname -r` linux-ubuntu-modules-`uname -r` libasound2 isn't working either so I suppose it has to be some setting I am unaware of? I am on an ASUS laptop and onboard there is a well-supported soundcard that isn't recognised by ALSA. Any hel10:21
neqerrlvlFurthermore, if I open up pulseaudio and go to sound settings (I believe it was called pavucontrol or something) and go to Configure soundcards, it is just blanc and says "no soundcards to configure". It is really annoying, I have no sound anymore. Not from my internal laptopspeakers nor from headphones. Microphone port is neither recognised.10:23
neqerrlvlI asked #ubuntu and they couldn't help me out so they advised me to ask it here again.10:25
TheSheepneqerrlvl: anything relevant in dmesg?10:27
neqerrlvlexcuse me?10:27
neqerrlvlwhat is dmesg?10:28
baizonhttp://www.linfo.org/dmesg.html10:29
neqerrlvlbrb rebooting computer from installing gstreamer-properties10:31
neqerrlvlback again10:41
neqerrlvllook, I have only dummy-output as only output and nothing else. How do I get my internal speakers back?10:42
baizonneqerrlvl: maybe they are muted10:49
baizonor disabled10:49
neqerrlvlno they aren't10:49
neqerrlvlI have done every single thing to make them work10:50
neqerrlvlTruly, everything10:50
neqerrlvlIf I don't get my sound to work, I will install Fedora10:50
neqerrlvlthe weird thing is, sound works OK on the Live-CD of Xubuntu10:51
neqerrlvlI have lost faith in Xubuntu10:52
photonis there a way to get rid of the bottom bar and move the task bar at the top to the bottom?11:33
TheSheepphoton: sure11:53
TheSheepphoton: right click, panel, panel properties11:53
photonTheSheep: it only lets me choose between vertical and horizontal, not top or bottom.11:53
TheSheepphoton: it lets you unlock it and then you can move it wherever you want11:56
photonoh... thanks!11:56
* photon is being stupid, again11:56
photonhow about removing the bottom bar, is that possible?11:56
TheSheepsure11:57
TheSheepthere is a minus button next to the panel dropdown in the panel settings11:57
photonoh... I know you must feel like you're explaining the functionality of the power on/off button to an 80 year old person right now. thanks again!12:06
TheSheepphoton: no, we actually get a lot of those questions, this interface is not very intuitive12:10

PN1hi, i've uploaded a new media player to Ubuntu Software Center 2 day ago but my status is pending review.anyone knows what might be the reason it take so long to show?14:00
PN1just ignore that one...14:01
JasorDoes anyone know solution to fix laggy flash.14:16
TheSheepuse html5 video! :D14:17
JasorIt is also laggy on my comp... cpu amd3700+14:18
holsteinJasor: you can mess about with the graphics drivers14:18
baizonbrwoser?14:18
JasorFirefox and crhomium14:18
holsteini usually suggest on 32bit systems to try troubleshooting with the chrome browser, since it has its own flash14:19
JasorAnd ihave installed geforce drivers14:19
holsteinJasor: how is it without the proprietary drivers?14:19
JasorHavent tested. Il try it out.14:20
JasorNow it is even laggier and audio is out of sync.14:28
photonIs there a way to make the window buttons (minimize, maximize, close (X)) bigger? they appear to be so small compared to what I know from Classic Gnome.14:31

marcpvoh ok, thanks15:57
apm1guys i have a problem with a kernel update15:58
toraxapm1: share the problem16:00
apm1i just tried updating to 3.2.0-32-generic but it sayse dpkg has an error ?16:01
toraxwhat exactly?16:02
toraxput the output to pastebin or something16:02
apm1pasting it16:03
apm1http://paste.ubuntu.com/1279445/16:04
apm1if i was to confess , well i tinkerd with grub and may have changed some things :(16:06
apm1how do i reset the grub.conf ?16:07
zmiscWhat's the difference between Xubuntu and Linux Mint (XFCE)16:07
toraxapm1: you can try dpkg-reconfigure16:08
apm1torax, just "dpkg-reconfigure" ?16:08
holsteinzmisc: xubuntu is ubuntu based, and uses the official ubuntu repos... mint is its own thing, based on ubuntu, but with differnt packages and access to different packages16:08
holstein!mint16:09
ubottuLinux Mint is not a supported derivative of Ubuntu. Please seek support in #linuxmint-help on irc.spotchat.org16:09
holstein/a/way16:09
toraxapm1: dpkg-reconfigure grub2 or whatever the grub package is named16:09
zmischolstein: I understand that Mint is not supported by Ubuntu and I am not asking for support for Mint.16:09
apm1how about i removed the grub package ?16:10
holsteinzmisc: i wasnt linking that to be combatitive.. just to offer the link to the mint channels16:10
zmischolstein: sorry my apologies, thank you for the suggestion.16:10
zmiscI'm just trying to weigh my options (ex Debian user) and I think Xubuntu might be a better route due to the fact that it is officially supported by Ubuntu. The Ubuntu ecosystem probably has a lot more to offer. In terms of support and cooperation.16:12
bazhangof course we will say xubuntu16:12
holsteinzmisc: try the both live...16:12
holsteinthem*16:12
bazhangyou can look up online what MINT has and does not have16:12
holsteinmost folks like the out of the box packages and things that ubuntu cannont include by default, but can easily be added16:13
zmiscI don't mind adding packages, rather I'd like to have less installed out of the box that way I can build my install how I'd like.16:14
holsteinzmisc: its not significant in size like that.. mint is probably slightly larger for other reasons.. its more about licensing16:15
apm1zmisc, i beg your pardon sir but i being an old debian user as well might be packing my bags and maybe leaving to squezze land tonight ;)16:15
zmiscapm1: I believe potato, or woody were stable when I first started using Linux.16:15
apm1zmisc, ok but why did you ever leave ?16:16
apm1new hardware ?16:16
zmiscStale packages :(16:16
apm1zmisc, well i love gnome 2 so you are talking to the wrong man abt that ;) :)16:17
apm1people say "gnome2 is still default on debian stable , that package must have layers of dust on it " ;)16:18
zmiscapm1: yeah I do agree that GNOME 2 is much better than 3.x.. I've been using XFCE since 4.0.1. So basically I'd like to keep up to date with XFCE and some of the desktop applications I use.16:18
apm1zmisc, ok , suit yourself but i am moving ;)16:19
zmisc:D16:20
zmiscapm1: Yup, it was Debian 3.0 "Woody" that I started on Linux (I had used Slackware for about 2 months.. but I don't really count that)16:22
ruslanhi. my usb stick fails to load with message: "Loading Operating System... Boot error". Nothing else. It is a usb stick with Xubuntu 12.04. I used startup disk creator. Please help17:55
toraxruslan: you could try making the usb key again, maybe with unetbootin17:58
ruslantorax, already tried. The stick runs on other PCs . I suspect it's  a BIOS issue17:59
toraxtry disconnecting all non-needed usb devices, use usb ports in back panel (if using a desktop)18:01
toraxI cant really think of anything else right now18:01
ruslantorax, thank you. I'll try that. I have a lot of usb stuff there indeed18:01
Unit193ruslan: 1. BIOS supports it?  2. Is it trying to boot from the flash?  3. Can you force it to with the "Boot menu" which can be Esc or F12 on some computers?18:04
Unit193BIOS upgrade can help, at times (Did for me, but that's another story)18:04
ruslanUnit193, 1. not sure. 2. Yes. 3. I tried to boot with F12. The same thing. I'll try to upgrade BIOS. Thanks18:06
erkan^hello, i have a question. I use Windows 7 64-bits and I want install Xubuntu 32-bits via Wubi, but it doesn't work. can someone help me?18:48
recon_laperkan^: was a bug reported in the wubi installer yesterday, might be you problem18:52
erkan^ah ok18:54
recon_laperkan^: when did you download the installer18:54
recon_laperkan^: are you getting  08-29 21:38 DEBUG  Distro: wrong version: 12.04 != 12.04.118:56
recon_laperkan^: also looks like it will install 64bit unless you force it to install 32bit18:58
RropicanaStill no news about the server issiue with metalink to download Xubuntu in windows mode?19:19
TheSheepRropicana: nope19:21
TheSheepRropicana: but I was thinking that you could download the iso yourself19:21
TheSheepRropicana: and point WUBI to it19:21
recon_lapRropicana: had a quick look, this error been around for couple of months , must be a fix out by now19:21
recon_lapRropicana: just some many single reports of it marked new it's hard to find the actual bug report19:22
Rropicanawell i tryed to download it and put the ISO fil on a USB stick, but it will not try to install it from the stick it just try to download it19:22
RropicanaTheSheep: how do i fix so it take the files from the stick instead of downloading it?19:24
recon_lapRropicana: did you burn from disk image to USB or did you just copy the ISO?19:24
recon_lapRropicana: never mind :-[19:26
RropicanaI used winrar to extract the files to the stick and then i started WUBI19:26
Rropicana:p19:26
RropicanaSo the issiue is now that i dont know how to repoint the install19:26
recon_lapRropicana: you should put the ISO unextraced in the same dir as wubi and then try19:26
RropicanaOkey will try that now19:27
RropicanaStill get the error :(19:34
RropicanaI have tryed with just iso fil19:34
Rropicanaand also extracted19:34
RropicanaThe iso fils name is xubuntu-12.04.1-alternate-i386 is that correct?19:35
recon_lapRropicana: I'm looking for some docs, see if i can find the answer19:36
recon_lapRropicana: download this and try http://releases.ubuntu.com/12.04/wubi.exe19:42
Rropicanastill the same problem :(19:44
Rropicanabut as i see in the URL you send me it says 12.04 but my ISO fil has the name 12.04.119:45
Unit193I'd recommend dual-booting rather than using wubi.19:45
RropicanaUnit193: The problem is that i dont have a extern DVD reader so if i fail the install or anything goes wrong i cant reinstall windows19:52
recon_lapBit silly that they could not fix this bug considering it's the least technical that it will affect19:52
Rropicanayeah, but i guess they put all the energy at Ubuntu instead :p19:54
recon_lapRropicana: I'm reading this https://bugs.launchpad.net/wubi/+bug/1041142 , says it's fixed?19:57
ubottuLaunchpad bug 1041142 in Wubi "http://releases.ubuntu.com/12.04.1/MD5SUMS-metalink HTTP Error 404. Not Found" [Medium,Fix released]19:57
recon_lapRropicana: can you have a look for the log file wubi-12.04*.log  and pastebin it19:58
RropicanaYou mean my error log?20:00
Rropicanahttps://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xubuntu-meta/+bug/1066150?comments=all20:00
ubottuLaunchpad bug 1066150 in xubuntu-meta (Ubuntu) "WUBI fails to install xubuntu 12.04 because only 12.04.1 metalink file exists" [Undecided,Confirmed]20:00
recon_laphmm, seems ubuntu fixed it but not xubuntu20:04
Rropicanayeah, and thats pretty annoying20:06
recon_laphmm, and it seems all the setting are compiled into wubi.exe20:08
RropicanaI can tell you that i have installed Ubuntu this way and it worked perfect on my netbook20:09
Sysiyou can install ubuntu and xubuntu-desktop on it20:09
Rropicanabut then i wanted Xubuntu instead b/c it should not be that heave for my netbook20:10
recon_lapRropicana: well, it's 4 days till 12.10 is released.20:10
Sysixubuntu wubi support is dropped from 12.1020:11
recon_lapRropicana: but nothing I can think of that will get it to work, need that meta package replaced on servers or updated wibu to be compiled and released20:12
Rropicanarecon_lap: Do we know when that is going to happen?20:13
recon_lapRropicana: no idea, really need a package maintainer to get on it, but they probably busy with 12.10 atm.20:14
Rropicanakk, so anyone know how i can install Xubuntu at my netbook and dont lose all the data i have on it and keep my win7?20:15
recon_lapRropicana: well, you should back up your /home directory before you do any major upgrade. but I have no idea how you'll get wubi to work atm.20:17
recon_lapdo the install CD's allow you to do a wubi install without network?20:19
RropicanaThis is just a question... but if i do the WUBI install at Ubuntu cant i replace it when im inside with Xubuntu?20:20
RropicanaThe funny thing is that i cant boot from my USB stick and i dont have a cd driver on the netbook20:21
recon_lapRropicana: whats the netbook?20:21
Rropicananetbook is a mini laptop here in Sweden 10.1" screen20:23
recon_lapRropicana: make and model I was interested in, surprising a net book wont boot from usb20:24
RropicanaSamsung nc11020:24
Rropicanaor atleast it cant read the boot files from the USB stick20:25
recon_lapRropicana: did you use unetbootin to burn the ISO on the USB drive?20:26
Rropicanai dont think so20:28
RropicanaI just downloaded the ISO fil and have bout iso and the extracted files on the stick20:28
Rropicanait can find the USB stick in BIOS but not when it boots20:29
recon_lapRropicana: you need to use http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/ to burn the ISO to the Flashdrive, thats why it's not booting20:29
recon_lapRropicana: might not be the best link20:30
recon_lapRropicana: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromUSBStick20:31
Sysi"burning" here means extracting files and installing boot loader20:31
Sysi!purexfce20:31
ubottuIf you want to remove all !KDE and !Gnome packages and have a default !Xubuntu system follow the instructions here « http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/purexfce »20:31
Sysi^^if you have ubuntu installation and want xubuntu20:32
Sysiwubi causes some lag, for disk operations at least, win7 can be installed from usb too20:33
Rropicanaatm it feels easier to just use Ubuntu instead and try to tweak the system so it runs better20:35
RropicanaSysi: so you mean if im using WUBI it slows down the compute?20:36
Rropicanar20:36
Sysia bit20:36
SysiRropicana: at easiest, you get xubuntu by finding xubuntu-desktop in software center and choosing xubuntu session when loggin in20:37
SysiI used wubi for a little while, it was somewhat unstable btu that might be just my HW20:38
Rropicanabut if i make my USB boot able will i get the chance to choose a partition that i will install it on? or make a new partition and still have my win7 left20:39
RropicanaI get some lagspikes when im useing Ubuntu on my netbook and the mouse is freezing some times20:40
recon_lapRropicana: not sure if it would work, but I think you get the option to wubi install if you insert the USB when windows is running20:42
Rropicanarecon_lap: already tryed that :/20:44
recon_lapRropicana: but you did not create the live USB correctly20:44
recon_lapRropicana: using unetbootin20:44
Rropicananop that i havnt tryed ;)20:45
Rropicanadamn this will take some time :P20:51
RropicanaSo after i have write all the files to the USB stick i will reboot then install?20:51
recon_lapRropicana: if you want a wubi install probably just put the usb stink in while windows is running, should auto start.20:53
recon_lapstick*20:54
RropicanaThat would be lovley if it works20:55
Rropicana:)20:55
recon_lapjust hopes flash drive is formated for windows :)21:02
Rropicanafingers crossed :)21:07
recon_lapRropicana: making any progress?21:46
Rropicanajust finished the extraction to the usb but it didnt auto run21:47
Rropicanai tryed to use Wubi but it didnt work21:48
Rropicanaso now i need to reboot and check whats going to happen21:48
Rropicanawish me luck :)21:48
recon_lapRropicana: can you open the usb from windows?21:48
Rropicanayes21:48

livingdaylighthi, this laptop is 64bit capable, but only has 3gb of ram. Would you recommend 64 bit or will 32 more than do?22:46
photon64 bit has more advantages than just accessing more than 4 GB of ram.22:47
livingdaylightsounds thereby that you're suggesting to 64bit if one can?22:48
livingdaylightit does mean using more memory and concerned how that might affect the laptop. It gets hot anyway.22:51
