gryif I have installed xubuntu after windows, how easy is it to shrink the windows partition (once it's got enough space) and expand the xubuntu one?01:07
Unit193Using gparted?  Not really hard, though it's always recommended to backup anything you'd need.01:09
grydo I need to defrag? do I need to boot into windows after shrinking its partition? or something01:11
Unit193Defrag would be a good idea, running chkdsk (chkntfs?) after would be recommended.01:12
Unit193http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/partitioning01:13
grysure thanks, I'll give that a try01:13
Unit193Hope it helps.01:14
crashedpcpartitioning a USB thumbdrive reduces the lifespan.  anything else i should be aware of becides this?01:24
Unit193What format you going for?01:25
crashedpcext201:26
holsteinyou could argue ext2 instead of ext401:26
Unit193Or fat, for flash.01:28
crashedpcoh. a problem i have come across on a build im working on: when attempting to boot from the xubuntu  x86 12.04.1 CD with a Dell i4600 board i get an error message telling me something about expecting a filesystem and not being able to find it (disk works fine in other computers, im currently using it to install to this laptop ATM)01:35
crashedpcany idea whats going on? (burned with windows image burner)01:35
crashedpci was able to boot kubuntu but i'd rather install from a xubuntu disk rather than having to install twice01:37
LiquidedgeMy 2 year old totally blew up my taskbar.  Is there a way to reset it to defaults?01:41
crashedpcscreenshot maybe?01:42
Liquidedgehttp://imgur.com/Mmgot01:45
holsteinLiquidedge: i would just look at the live cd, or a new user... or blow it out in the /home01:45
crashedpcnew user, transfer files. easiest thing i can think of01:46
holsteinjust remove the panel settings from /home01:46
LiquidedgeIs it a hidden directory or file?01:47
LiquidedgeI don't know where the panel settings are.01:48
crashedpcits amazing what kids and animals can do01:48
LiquidedgeMy little floating bar across the bottom is gone, too.01:48
Unit193.config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/xfce4-panel.xml  and  .config/xfce4/panel/01:49
crashedpcctrl + H to show hidden files01:49
=== crashedpc is now known as crashedpc3
LiquidedgeI only see datetime-7.rc01:51
Liquidedge in the panel directory01:51
LiquidedgeI imagine after I delete it, I have to restart?01:52
crashedpc3or just log back in01:54
Liquidedgeyeah, didn't work.01:55

Random833thunderbird doesn't respect my browser setting, and opens firefox. wat do?04:02
holsteintry sudo update-alternatives --config x-www-browser Random83304:04
Random833so... there's no way to make it respect per-user XFCE preferred apps?04:06
Random833also, i just checked, and chromium is actually selected in that04:08
holsteinRandom833: does it help? is thunderbird "respecting" those settings?04:08
holsteinRandom833: theres a way in the GUI that apparently isnt working for you... is it just thunderbird? all other apps default to the browser you expect?04:09
Random833well, the only other app i've opened a url from is xfce terminal04:10
Random833I can't find what is making thunderbird pick firefox, since both alternatives and my xfce settings are set to chromium04:11
holsteinRandom833: and? does the terminal open the browser you expect?04:11
Random833yes, i just said that04:11
Random833well, i thought i said it04:11
Random833yes it does04:12
holsteinRandom833: can you test something else... maybe from some openoffice document... or another weblink04:12
holsteinalso, i find these...04:14
holsteinhttp://hsmak.wordpress.com/2009/09/03/howto-force-thunderbird-to-open-links-in-firefox/04:14
holsteinsimilar http://forums.opensuse.org/english/get-technical-help-here/applications/440364-chrome-unable-change-default-browser-thunderbird.html04:14
Random833what do you mean "another weblink"?04:20
Random833it's all links - the problem isn't with the link, it's with the app the link is clicked in04:20
agresterAnyone here have any experience in installing multiple Ubuntu's on the same machine?04:20
Random833this has happened with multiple links from within the terminal and from within thunderbird04:20
holsteinRandom833: i was referring to opening a link from chromium... seeing if firefox opened it04:21
holsteinRandom833: i linked some suggestions, but if the terminal is opening them in the browser you havent chosen, then its a system issue04:22
holsteinRandom833: thats what im trying to determine... is it a system wide issue where you have chosen a default browser and its not working, or is it just thunderbird... if its just thunderbird, try the above fix04:22
holsteinif its more than just thunderbird, we can go from there04:23
holsteinagrester: you mean, several installations? sure.. like dual or triple booting.. i have a test machine with lots of them04:23
holstein!grub | agrester04:23
ubottuagrester: GRUB2 is the default Ubuntu boot manager since 9.10 (Karmic). Lost GRUB after installing Windows? See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestoreGrub - For more information and troubleshooting for GRUB2 please refer to https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2 - See !grub1 for releases before Karmic (9.10)04:23
agrestergreat04:23
holsteinyou might want to check that out ^^ since thats really the trickiest part in my opinion04:24
agresterholstein: heres my partition setup [WindowsXP][empty][Xubuntu][swap]04:24
holsteini used to install from the alternate installers, and just not install grub. go into what i would call the "main" OS and run sudo update-grub04:24
agresterI want to install normal Ubuntu with Unity to [empty]04:24
holsteinagrester: you can have unity and XFCE04:25
agresterholstein: but in the past I had massive problems with this04:25
agresterthere ended up being conflicts04:25
agresterhave they improved the situation now?04:25
holsteinagrester: shouldnt be04:25
holsteinagrester: never should have been really. unless you had PPA's04:25
agresterI had PPA's04:26
agresterits just too messy04:26
agresterSo whats the best way of installing that partition?04:26
holsteinagrester: if i wanted what you are suggesting, i would run the alternate installer. i would put ubuntu in the middle on an custom partition and use the existing swap.. i would then not install grub, i would just update-grub from the other one and it'll pick it up04:26
agresterhttp://paste.ubuntu.com/1280521/04:27
holsteini currently have several DE's installed here though... XFCE, openbox... unity04:27
agresterHere's my fdisk output04:27
holsteinagrester: if you have the empty space you mentioned above, just use that04:27
agresterOk04:28
holsteinagrester: put an ext4 partition there and do it all in one like ubuntu does it, or customize from there04:28
holsteinagrester: use an alternate and dont blow out the grub.. or use the normal CD and blow it out and use the grub that comes with it04:28
agresterI see, so on my current Xubuntu primary install I should only have Grub installed there, but on the second install to the empty space not install grub?04:29
agresterAnd when I run update-grub it will include the new '/' Ubuntu?04:29
holsteinagrester: should, did for me... feel free and read up on grub though04:30
agresterok, are there any guides to the alternate installer?04:32
holsteinagrester: im sure there are somewhere.. dont lose sleep over it. the new install of grub should pick up your old ubuntu and windows as well04:34
holsteinjust do what is easy for you and read that page so you understand what is going on and how you can recover if need be04:34
agresterok04:35
agresterHolstein to be exact: when I boot up the "do something else" option of the installer do the following: 1) format empty as ext4 2) select that partition and configure it to mount '/' the root 3) DO NOT select for that partition to install the "bootloader"?04:38
agresterThen 4) go back to Xubuntu and run 'sudo update-grub' and sit back...04:39
ner0xGood morning. How can I stop my X server so I may run Xorg -configure?06:23
RropicanaI have tryed all night to use the Wubi fil to install linux... The only version that works now is Ubuntu:( Tryed everything to get Xubuntu worked but it didnt. I have also tryed Lubuntu with no good resulte06:41
ShirakawasunaAre you dedicated to using wubi, Rropicana? I ask because a standard installation may work better.06:56
[deXter]Hey07:37
[deXter]*Hi all07:37
[deXter]Does anyone know of a book - printed or electronic - for Xubuntu?07:58
[deXter]Aimed at novices, mind you.07:58
apm1[deXter], the official ubuntu book , shall cover that ?07:58
[deXter]nope07:59
[deXter]apm1, the novice in mind (my Dad) would get confused between ubuntu's unity and XFCE :P07:59
[deXter]He's pretty new to computers07:59
apm1[deXter], man , as you are aware there is no noobs's guide to *nix land in our galaxy ;)08:00
[deXter]I know, I know. :(08:00
[deXter]I already taught him all the basic operations but he lives in a different country and wants to have like a proper book for reference.08:01
apm1[deXter], introduce thy father to the holy jargon files , and make a knight(haker) out of him :p08:01
Kingsyanyone just randomly been removed from sudoers and su fails to authenticate?08:48
Kingsyhappened randomly one morning08:48
apm1Kingsy, it happend to me XD08:49
Sysisounds like you're confusing su and sudo08:49
KingsySysi: both don't work08:50
Kingsyapm1: really??? how did you fix it?08:50
apm1Kingsy, add yourself again to sudoers  and then reboot :)08:50
Kingsyapm1: how? su doesnt work..08:51
Kingsyvisudo: /etc/sudoers: Permission denied08:51
apm1but that was debian squezze, should work on xubuntu too :)08:51
apm1i hope the root passwords still works ?08:51
Kingsyapm1: like I said, I cant login using su08:51
Kingsyapm1: visudo says that ^^08:52
SysiKingsy: select failsafe from grub menu, you can get there by holding shift while/before booting08:52
KingsyI don't know what else to try..08:52
Kingsysomeone in #linux recommended booting from a livecd so I am downloading one of them now08:53
KingsySysi: the failsafe?08:54
SysiIDK what's the actual name, "the other option in grub menu"08:55
apm1rescue ?08:55
KingsySysi: what I mean is, what does it do? boot into xubuntu? or a tty? or?08:56
Sysiyou can select what to do, one option is root terminal08:56
Kingsyahhh cool..08:56
Kingsyso I could visudo from there08:56
KingsyI am gonna reboot then :)08:56
KingsySysi: ok, got into a root terminal09:02
Kingsysu returned nothing.. the username was root09:03
Kingsyvisudo said "This is a read only filesystem" or something along those lines09:03
Kingsyso it still didnt work09:03
fleguwhat are you trying to do?09:05
Kingsyflegu: one morning, booted up and my user, although I am able to login to the system.. is no longer a sudoer,   su fails to authenticate and using the recovery root terminal I still cant use visudo as I mentioned above09:06
Kingsyflegu: basically I am just trying to get root privs back09:06
KingsyI have no idea what happened.. but like I said, it just "did" this one morning09:06
fleguWhoa, sounds scary :O09:07
apm1Kingsy, come , abandon the buntus and live with us in squezze land :)09:07
Kingsyflegu: yeah, can you recommend anything?09:08
Kingsyapm1: that doesnt really help my problem09:08
apm1Kingsy, well , it certainly does , reinstalling will give you your root privliges back ;)09:09
fleguKingsy, not really. I thought you just wanted to open something with root privlidges so I was about to suggest sudoing :D09:09
Kingsyapm1: agreed but I really didnt want to re-install if I could help it09:09
fleguand you can't login as root?09:09
Kingsyno09:10
Kingsylike I said, it errors even from a root terminal from grub#09:10
Kingsysomething about a read only file system09:10
fleguso you can't edit the sudoers file... that sucks09:10
Kingsyyep09:11
Kingsywell I got that fixed through a livecd09:49
Kingsybtw I wanted to ask before.. what is the hell is sqeeeeze or whatever was said ealier ?09:56
Kingsyapm1: you around?11:04
apm1yup11:04
Kingsywhat were you talking about before .. leaving *ubuntu and going to sqeeeze or something? I think you said "sqeeze"11:04
Kingsybut I cant really remember..11:04
Kingsyjust curious11:04
apm1yes i meant moving to debian 6.0.6 , as i have :)11:05
Kingsyso how come your still hanging in here? if you don't use the distro I mean11:05
apm1because i love the community , right now i am facing a hardware issue and need some help :p11:05
Kingsyah... so what made you move?11:06
apm1the rocksolid stability compared to the buntus :)11:06
KingsyI find xubuntu is alright.. nowhere near the bloat that ubuntu carries.. and its xfce so you don't have the gnome crap11:06
apm1imho gnome2 ain't crap11:06
nicekiwihey, Ive installed the Nvidia drivers in xubuntu 12.10 and rebooted and ive lost all window borders and themes etc. But they work fine in the guest account. How can I fix this?11:06
KingsyI hate it..11:06
Kingsypersonal preference of course11:07
apm1and debian7 wheezy will have xfce as the default desktop :)11:07

apm1has anyone ever uncoverd a modem port on a thinkpad before ?11:08
nicekiwihow do I get root control on guest mode?11:08
apm1nicekiwi, su11:09
nicekiwiapm1, that does not work, says Authentication Failure (And i  KNOW my password is correct)11:09
apm1Kingsy, looks like your problem is now a bug :p11:10
nicekiwiapm1, uncovered?11:10
Kingsyapm1: how so?11:10

frank-manhi guys, where is on 12.10 the xorg.conf ?13:11
Sysiit hasn't been in default installation in years, you create one with sudo Xorg -configure after stopping xserver13:13
frank-manSysi, thx13:15
IndustrialIf I install a window manager like i3 (tiling windo manager) then my keyboard settings that I made in xfce are not reflected. I still have the keyboard where I have to press '" etc twice to get the characters, which is quite annoying imho. How do I get this to work with 1 keypress systemwide?13:40
SysiIndustrial: are you using it with xfce or as separate session?13:42
Industrialas a separate session. Iḿ not sure I'd like to use it WITH xfce (though certainly an option to explore, id have to turn off workspaces in xfce etc?)13:44
Sysiworkspace settings are part of window manager13:45
Sysiyou don't have xfce settings because you're not using xfce session, you need to find out how to apply them in i3 session13:46
IndustrialWell, somehow the system (without xfce) is setting the keyboard layout aswell, I was hoping I could just change that.13:48
TheSheepIndustrial: sudo dpkg-reconfigure keyboard-configuration13:59
v1adimirguys I can't seem to find why tracepath isn't working ( http://paste.ubuntu.com/1281129/ ) and I'm incompetent to make a new version to try ( http://www.skbuff.net/iputils/ ) any help? :)14:11

martinphonei need to dowload a full webpage as a jpg file, but it is a protected one, I mean Its a BfA page (Bundesagentür für Arbeit), thats the german employment service and to access to it I had to write a name and password17:32
martinphoneShutter wont do the trick, can you help me out?17:32
GridCubeflavor is it17:32
holsteinmartinphone: i would just take a screenshot17:33
Sysilawe: xubuntu isn't really different distro than ubuntu, it's just different installation disk17:33
GridCubemartinphone, there are firefox addons for that kind of stuff17:33
GridCubeor print it to pdf17:33
martinphoneholstein, its a large large page17:33
holsteinmartinphone: you could take several and edit them together17:33
martinphonehow do I print to pdf with ff?17:34
lawewell what happens when I want to install KDE? Xubuntu would no longer be Xubuntu17:34
Sysiit would be xubuntu with kde installed, quite close to kde17:34
TheSheeplawe: it's all one distribution, just different defaults17:34
holsteinmartinphone: i usually open what i want in libre/open office and export to pdf after formatting the way i want17:36
martinphoneo...17:37
holsteinany pdf printer system wide will be used by ff... http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=140815 for example.. not sure how current that info is17:38
GridCubemartinphone, i go to >file >print and choose as pdf17:39
KidDeath10kWhy does Chrome hate Xubuntu? It refuses to save as the default browser. :(17:39
Sysiit tries to save to wrong place, just tell it to stop nagging and use setting dialog of xubuntu17:40
KidDeath10kThen again, it could be VirtualBox being silly because (although I fixed it) it refused to save my window resolution :|17:40
holsteinKidDeath10k: i have chrome by setting it in the terminal17:40
KidDeath10kcommand please?17:41
KidDeath10kand when I say window, I mean screen ;o17:41
holsteinsudo update-alternatives --config x-www-browser17:42
KidDeath10kThere is only one alternative in link group x-www-browser: /usr/bin/google-chrome17:43
KidDeath10kNothing to configure.17:43
KidDeath10kYet, when I restart the VM. It's like "Nope. Sorry, gotta tell me again bro."17:43
Sysichrome lies17:43
KidDeath10kIt's better than Firefox by far though.17:44
KidDeath10kI used to love love love Firefox, now they've simply gone down hill as of late.17:44
holsteinKidDeath10k: works for me... what is opening? ff?17:44
KidDeath10kIt just opens a dialogue saying.. one sec.17:44
Sysi66617:44
KidDeath10kDerp, it wants to work now because I've already told it 1000 times what to use. :S17:45
KidDeath10kbut if I restart the VM now, i'll do the same thing.17:45
KidDeath10kI had to edit the xorg file to fix the screen resolution. I'd save it using the GUI, restart the VM then it goes back to 800x600 ._.17:45
KidDeath10kbut that's fixed.17:46
KidDeath10kNow it displays the VM in a wonderful 1920x1080 resolution at all times on one of my screens.17:47
martinphonethx GridCube , the pdf thing worked17:48
GridCube:P good17:48
KidDeath10kAlso, where in the world do you all get these nifty commands from? Constant googling or is there some sort of book I've missed completely?17:48
GridCubeKidDeath10k, do you have the vbox extras installed?17:48
KidDeath10kYes, I do.17:49
KidDeath10kWhich, speaking of that I have no scroll wheel support. :S17:49
GridCubeKidDeath10k, there is two tools on your system, they are called man and info17:49
KidDeath10kPut it to the man to give you some info?17:49
Sysigoogle, askubuntu, ubuntu wiki and locally there's apropos17:50

baizonKidDeath10k: Cloud (Ubuntu One) will fix it ;)17:52
KidDeath10kBut is not a single a soul in the world going to steal a book.17:52

baizonwelcome fellow xubuntu user19:01
CalysoniaI just got a Macbook Pro, and I'm curious as to how compatible it'll be. As in, multitouch and whatnot working so that I can right click and whatnot.19:02

john_ramboWhen I amtrying to modify network connections via network manager Xubuntu is not asking for password is this normal ? It used to ask for password before iirc20:35
Sysiit doesn't ask for password unless you choose "use for all users"20:37
john_ramboSysi, available for all users is selected20:40
Sysiif you were asked for password less than 15 mins ago, it won't be asked again20:41
john_ramboSysi, No I didnt enter my password in this session & I also did sudo -k in run20:42
BitPuffinHey guys, here is a little bug report thing. Please change it so that /usr/share/gvfs/mounts/network.mount has AutoMount to false by default. It is what causes the annoying delay when launching Thunar. Basically Thunar checks the network when launching and since it isn't concurrent it won't show up until the check finishes. I think it will make a lot of users happy, so be sure to have it in 12.10! The delay only happens if you cli21:18
BitPuffinck network now, and that's understandable. You don't need for it to be automatic21:18
BitPuffincheers21:18
BitPuffinHopefully there's a dev in here21:19
TheSheep!bugs | BitPuffin21:25
ubottuBitPuffin: If you find a bug in Ubuntu or any of its derivatives, please file a bug using the command « ubuntu-bug <package> » - See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs for other ways to report bugs.21:25
kcxzeroThat bug has already been reported21:29
kcxzeroalso, it doesn't have to do with xubuntu I believe. It's Thunar's problem. Last I checked it wasn't "high priority" which I believe it should be. It's quite a turn off if you don't know the fix.21:32
BitPuffinYeah I found it21:32
BitPuffinand commented to push it up a bit21:32
kcxzeronice21:32
BitPuffinit should be very high priority when it's such an easy fix21:33
BitPuffinAlthough it could be a good idea for the Thunar guys to make the network searching threaded21:33
BitPuffinBut anyways, xubuntu could update the packaging and send it upstream :)21:33
kcxzeroI think technically it would be considered a workaround since it does not actually fix it?21:34
kcxzerolike you were saying if you click network you still have to wait21:34
BitPuffinkcxzero, Yeah, so really it needs to be threaded21:34
kcxzerotrue21:35
BitPuffinhm21:35
BitPuffinI could fix that21:35
BitPuffinunless it is already fixed21:35
BitPuffinand if I have time lol21:35
kcxzerodo it lol21:37
BitPuffinshould be simple enough21:41
BitPuffinit is just C21:41
BitPuffinand C11 is pretty widely supported so threading isn't an issue :)21:42
kcxzeroI don't know C, so I'm out haha.21:42
BitPuffinC is pretty simple21:42
BitPuffinit just looks like balls21:43
