nitin1hello everyone, I upgraded from 12.04 to 12.10 beta today, and the messaging menu is missing. The only application I use from that menu is Pidgin. Is this a known issue ?10:12
d0odnitin1: AFAIK, yes.10:14
d0odnitin1: If no applications that use the messaging menu is present the menu hides. I assume there's a plugin or checkbox that needs ticking for pidgin to use the messaging menu10:15
nitin1I haven't needed any extra plugins before this, and the integration was automatic before this. So I am wondering what can be done for this10:18
foobArrrwoot? no more alternate cd? has the normal installer learned to setup lvm + luks?10:24
d0odnitin1: Hmm. I've just installed Pidgin on my 12.10 and get the same thing. There doesn't seem to be a setting or additional plugin that enables it, either. I'll have a google.10:26
nitin1thanks for the taking the trouble d0od, seems like pidgin does not register as messaging menu application, neither does this skype-messaging-menu wrapper I was using to launch skype from the the messaging menu10:29
nitin1also if it helps, pidgin quits if you close the main window, instead of running in the background, and you can run multiple instances of the application. All point to no "system-tray" support10:34
nitin1anyway, I am off to work - giving tech support to windows 8 ;). so I guess this will have to wait till I get back later10:35

drbobband the inability to switch off the touchpad is killing me.12:25
drbobbMaybe someone knows of a workaround?12:26
MneumonicIs there a way to turn off the hiding of the appmenu (global menu)?13:02
MneumonicI like the idea but I don't like that it is hidden13:03
philinuxMneumonic: yep. top right gear choose system settings > appearance> behaviour tab13:04
Mneumonicphilinux not the unity bar13:05

philinuxthe setting is toggled via "menu always visible"13:12
Mneumonicphilinux thanks!13:12
philinuxMneumonic: at least in theory thats it13:12
philinuxy13:12
philinuxI'm curious so i'll installl ccsm and have a look13:13
philinuxMneumonic: that feature didnt make it in 12.1013:18
philinuxMneumonic: u can delay the autohiding to a max 10 seconds. default it 213:19
philinuxMneumonic: scroll to bottom http://askubuntu.com/questions/25785/can-auto-hide-for-the-application-menu-be-turned-off-in-unity13:21
philinuxthe other way would be to remove the global menu feature13:22
MneumonicI ran 12.04 with it removed13:22
MneumonicThat is probably what i will do in 12.1013:22
philinuxin 12.04 it was this sudo apt-get autoremove appmenu-gtk appmenu-gtk3 appmenu-qt13:23
philinuxnot sure if it's the same for 12.10. Personally I've got used to it13:23

machiavelHi, I updated my HTPC running Ubuntu + XBMC to the latest beta. But now my nvidia driver was also updated - removing the very convenient sliders to compensate the overscan on my TV. I read stuff about xrandr... is there an alternate way to adjust the display settings to fit my screen: what is the most recent old driver that has these adjustable sliders?15:49
Strav`Hi! Small question: is anyone else having their key bindings (mainly for windows minimizing, maximizing and closing) overwritten by the defaults on each reboot?15:51
machiavelI found that 192.36.15 should still work with sliders (I cant remember which version I had), but its over two years old...15:53
BluesKajmachiavel, the latest nvidia-current driver is 304.51 and for some cards it's still the 304.43 , which i use atm , there are no sliders but no overscan either ..the resolution setting doesn't help ?15:59
machiavelBluesKaj, can only select 1920x1080 (Full hd screen)16:04

bjsnidermachiavel, "This can be configured, with finer granularity, through the ViewPortIn and ViewPortOut MetaMode attributes."16:21
bjsniderjust research those attributes and you'll be able to reverse overscan16:21
BluesKajbjsnider, where would that mode setting be located ?, doesn't seem to exist in the nvidia gui16:32

jackhillIf I change all instances of auth_admin to no no one can reboot the machine which is the expected result.17:50
jackhillIs this a bug or do I not understand polkit?17:50
jackhills/localauth/localauthority/17:51
leoquantpmatulis, compiz related?17:51
pmatulisleoquant: no17:52
leoquantno bug reports?17:52
jribjackhill: you're sure that a user neither in the "admin" group nor in the "sudo" group can still shutdown?17:53
pmatulisleoquant: none that i could find17:53
leoquanthmm17:53
pmatulisleoquant: it's mostly troubling b/c this TP is 6 yrs old.  usually very well supported17:53
leoquantpmatulis, your running an old machine, what specs?17:53
leoquantpmatulis, indeed17:54
jackhilljrib: my problem is that when I use auth_admin users not in admin or sudo can shutdown.17:54
pmatulisleoquant: TP T60, core2 duo, it's still very decent17:54
jribjackhill: how are you shutting down?17:54
jribbrb17:54
leoquantyou could take a look at swappiness 10/20/30/40/17:55

pmatulisleoquant: any reason why you mention swappiness?  i have 3 GB of memory if it matters.  plenty for what i'm doing17:56
leoquantyeah indeed17:57
pmatulisleoquant: and, yes, i have a value of 6017:57
jackhilljrib: oops, I was wrong, unprivledged users cannot shutdown, choosing shutdown just ends their session.17:57
leoquantyou could set it to even to 10/2017:57
jackhillThis is from the KDE shutdown widget17:57
jackhillHowever even people in the sudo group cannot shutdown.17:58
leoquantpmatulis, i have no idea bout the lock-ups17:59
leoquantsorry17:59
pmatulisleoquant: might help, changed it.  thanks anyway17:59
jribjackhill: so the problem is that no one, not even members of the sudo group, can shutdown even though you've specified "auth_admin"?18:02
jackhilljrib: correct.18:02
jackhillKDM and lightdm-kde-greeter display different behavior for their shutown buttens as well. KDM will shutdown the computer (with auth_admin), lightdm will not (no error message though)18:04
jribjackhill: hmm, one thing to check: there's also org.freedesktop.consolekit.stop-multiple-users18:08
jackhilljrib: no difference18:16
jackhillanother datum, setting auth_self does not ask for the user password, it instead just ends the user session.18:22

blob4000i still can't get 12.10 to run smooth at all on virtualbox as a guest. the virtualbox video driver/module doesn't seem to load. it's sluggish as heck19:49

jackhilljrib: changeing my pkla file to http://paste.ubuntu.com/1283787/ does not allow people in the sudo group to shutdown.20:07
jribjackhill: don't know; I'm not familiar enough with polkit20:11
jackhilljrib: 12.04 behaves the same way, so at least it isn't a (new) bug. Thanks for your help.20:16
foobArrrI just logged in KDE and now my xfce has that ugly kde look, too. what's wrong there? http://s3.imgimg.de/uploads/xfcelookslikekde0b1ad652jpg.jpg20:17
jribjackhill: if I were in your shoes, I might try something other than shutdown (like running an app or printing (something easy)); just to see if there's a difference20:17
* jackhill nods20:18
yofelfoobArrr: try to delete ~/.config/gtk-3.0/settings.ini20:30
yofeland ~/.gtkrc-2.0 possibly20:31
foobArrryofel: worked, thanks20:33
foobArrrhm, colors are still kdeish20:34
foobArrrnevermind, thanks20:35
GhabitHello. Is released some iso newer than 15.10.2012?20:50
yofelGhabit: not yet, most of them are being rebuilt though: http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/milestones/240/builds20:54
Ghabityofel, rebuilding means soon will be newer version? (looking at ubuntu amd64 desktop.20:55
yofelyes20:56
Ghabityofel, thank you! :)20:57
GhabitIs that long - rebuilding process? I mean hour, or day?20:57
yofelno idea, queuebot in #ubuntu-testing will tell when it's done20:58
drbobbdoes anyone know of a workaround for the broken touchpad settings?21:27
drbobbI can't type while my touchpad is on and being unable to switch it off is driving me crazy21:27
OerHeksdrbobb, does your laptop have a FN key to switch off touchpad/enable external mouse ?21:30
drbobbyes it does, but it doesn't work in the beta21:31
drbobbI mean it does nothing21:31
drbobbFWIW, using a Lenovo G56021:32
drbobbseriously, nobody else finds this to be a problem?21:43
OerHekshardware FN key should work.21:44
OerHeksmaybe only if you attach an external mouse ?21:44
drbobbI use an external mouse all the time21:46
* MrChrisDruif waves at OerHeks 21:51
drbobbhey that's funny, I just hit fn-f4 and it seems to have switched the touchpad off21:51
drbobbI tried it like a hundred times before, and it never did21:51
drbobbbut now, hitting it again does not toggle back on21:51
OerHeksdrbobb, some FN keys have 3 stages, touchpad, mouse,touchpad+mouse...21:52
drbobbah, it should have been fn-f621:53
drbobbfn-f4 indeed does nothing, but i'm not sure what it's supposed to21:54
drbobbthe teeny-tiny icons look pretty meaningless21:54
drbobbso it's not that bad21:55
drbobbstill, synaptiks has the nifty option to suppress the touchpad only while you type21:55
drbobbso it's not cool to lose that21:55
OerHeksdrbobb, i cannot find a bugreport on that, maybe you can start one ?22:01
drbobbit's been reported, but no indication that a fix is coming22:01
dmattdrbobb: which desktop environment do you use?22:06
drbobbI use kde, but unity and gnome have the same issue22:19
Ghabitbuild downloading is ssso slowly.22:34
GhabitDniwe.\22:34
BarkingFishMorning guys - anyone in here upgraded to the QQ beta yet?23:15
BarkingFishI tried earlier this evening, and it damn near drove me to insanity.  All my old mirrors from precise got deleted, and it wound up adding mirrors from Quetzal which were utterly busted.23:16
bjsniderthat's what it's supposed to do23:47
