Guest6286Hi I've just upgraded my Kubuntu host to 12.10 and now vmware workstation won't load up. I've tried the new patch and also tried to uninstall but for some reason I get this error on reinstallation: Unable to stop services.00:46
Guest6286i'd be grateful if anyone is please able to help00:46
FlyingElviswell the upgrade from 12.04 to 12.10 is done...went without a hitch far as i can tell00:49
douglI am having issues with my 12.04 box but only when it runs in windows = how can I load the system to test hardware under kubuntu... I mean really that is what is important.00:50
douglIn windows it magically reboots/restarts.... kubuntu (no load) seems to run flawlessly - as we'd expect, but lets put it to the test... but how00:52

SIR_Taco_dougl: how about the 'stress' package?01:03

GirlyGirlDoes kubuntu have any alternate isos for 12.10?07:44
lordievaderGirlyGirl: Perhaps this is what you are looking for: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/daily/current/07:46
yofel_GirlyGirl: no, if you need the text installer you'll have to use the mini.iso07:47
GirlyGirlyofel_: Any way do download all the .deb packages so that no download is necessary using the mini iso?07:48
yofel_not that I know of, but maybe someone else does07:49
Smurphyas far as I have read - the reasons they do the huge ISO - is to have the alternate installer also on the same one ...07:50
=== rick__ is now known as Name222
SmurphyReasone for the Alternate image - is 384MiB :) ram ...07:52
GirlyGirlyofel_: Another question why is the iso so big, considering the additional packages are not that much?07:53
SmurphyThey wanted to get away from the CD Size limitation - so people at the end of the workd wouldn't have to download the Office packages for 3 days by example.07:54
yofel_that, and it allowed for some packaging hackery to be removed that was needed to somehow make everything fit into 700M07:55

artaoaww man21:59
artaono way21:59
artaoc'mon there's gotta be ... can't i try to restart plasma from a CLI or something?22:00
artaoi'm using kubuntu backports and Xorg PPAs, so re-installing plasma sounds very very un-fun22:00
BarkingFishartao, go with what genii-around said above - it's probably easier.22:00
BarkingFishif you're using PPAs, that's a risk you take :)  I've fallen down that hole before :P22:01
BarkingFishlast time resulted in a full reinstall :(22:01
artaoit was this stoopid tiny-browser that did this22:01

yofelthat shouldn't take 8 hours (well with btrfs maybe)22:08
genii-aroundartao: If you pastebin ls -lR .oldkde I may be able to find where that browser thing is and help you get back to where you were before22:08
genii-aroundartao: ( assuming you did the mv .kde .oldkde )22:08
yofelBarkingFish: and the monitor size is..? text mode has a fixed number of lines, so the height would be screen dependent ;)22:08
artaommkay22:09
yofelBarkingFish: what graphics card do you have?22:09
BarkingFishmonitor is Dell E151FP, which I think is either 15 or 17 inch, and the graphics card is an nVidia Geforce 6200 TurboCache22:10
yofelwhat driver are you using, nouveau or nvidia?22:11
artaoum .. genii-around ... that'd be "ls -lR | pastebinit" .. yes?22:12
BarkingFishno idea, hold on and I'll tell you :)22:13

yofelBarkingFish: 'sudo jockey-text -d nvidia-current' I believe22:15
artaomaybe it's just taking a really long time? i dunno here22:15

diane_yes.. quassel , keep coming up and don't want to chat with anyone22:19
diane_so how do i stop this or unstall it..I don't need it..22:19
BarkingFishok - well I just tried to modprobe nouveau, and it comes up with FATAL: Module Off not found22:19
yofelFile->Quit should usually make it quit. And it shouldn't start again if it's really terminated.22:19
artaois pastebin down or something?22:19
yofelBarkingFish: you can't use nouveau while nvidia is in use22:19
BarkingFishyeah, but I can't modprobe -r nvidia because it's in use :P22:20
yofelBarkingFish: yeah, you'll have to reboot22:20
BarkingFishoh shoot.22:20
BarkingFishok then, guess I'll have to go sort that now.  What I want is nouveau as default, and the nvidia module not to load22:20
diane_so  it  quit.. then not suppose start up your saying.. okay try it.. but every time reboot it turn on for no resason22:21
genii-aroundartao: Anyhow... possibly inside of the .oldkde/share/config/ directory, one of these files:  plasma-appletsrc  plasma-desktop-appletsrc plasma-desktoprc or plasmarc     ...might contain references to the offending widget somewhere, you could scan through them, remove any references to it, etc22:21

BarkingFishyup, ok then. Looks like everything is good this end, I'mma reboot. back in a couple of ticks.22:26
BarkingFish:)22:26
genii-aroundjonah_: I would be interested to know if you load the i915 driver with the option: lvds_channel_mode=2      if the hdmi will show up after in xrandr. To do this though:  logout, ctrl-alt-f1 and login there... sudo stop kdm (or lightdm, whatever you have)  then: sudo modprobe -r i915 && sudo modprobe i915 lvds_channel_mode=2    then sudo start kdm (lightdm, whatever)  alt-f7 , log back in and then try the xrandr   again...   if lightdm/kdm fails22:28
genii-aroundthen just do: sudo modprobe -r i915 && modprobe  i91522:28
genii-around( and then of course the sudo start kdm/lightdm )22:28
jonah_genii-around: ok will try this now thanks very much22:30
jonah_genii-around: hi just tried that but it said "FATAL: module is in use" so I think I needed to stop X somehow as well as lightdm...22:36
genii-aroundjonah_: Well, there is another tactic. You can put the module options in /etc/modules  like: i915 lvds_channel_mode=2        in there. Then next boot that should be what it uses. But the problem becomes if it is some option which again makes X unusable, you have to boot to recovery mode, remove the line, reboot22:42
jonah_genii-around: ok how do i add the line in? do you think this will work?22:42
sithlord48does anyone know how to set user images with lightdm?22:42
genii-aroundjonah_: Normally from konsole or terminal to: sudo nano /etc/modules        add the line, ctrl-x to exit, enter to save with same name22:42
genii-aroundjonah_: This will work for you in recovery mode as well to remove it if needed22:43
glisstechgenii-around: cat /proc/sys/net/ipv6/conf/all/disable_ipv6 now outputs "1" but I still cant ping my gateway address or anything else other than the localhost22:43
genii-aroundglisstech: is ifconfig still showing some ipv6 address?22:43
glisstechgenii-around: Nope, no inet6 address at all22:43
jonah_genii-around: weird, all it did was jumble my desktop icons up and put them lower on the screen. I've still no hdmi out and it still doesn't show any other connections in xrandr...22:45
=== AMDAthlon is now known as ImAGirlLOL19f
genii-aroundjonah_: Damn. I'm out of immediate ideas. Since we can't even see the hdmi there's no way to really configure it. But the problem is lower down someplace in the driver or maybe boot options, is what I'm suspecting22:46
jonah_genii-around: this is awful, I'm desperate to use this display... is there nothing else we can do?22:47
genii-aroundglisstech: Is there anything in /etc/resolv.conf ?22:47

genii-aroundjonah_: Yes, that's the intel hda driver I asked before if was loaded22:49
genii-aroundglisstech: Yes22:49
artaois there a way to make gedit NOT create an additional blank file when i open a file from a file browser?22:49
jonah_genii-around: why not the xserver-xorg-video-intel package?22:49
jonah_genii-around: oh file the bug against that package you mean?22:50
genii-aroundglisstech: But then, do you have any entries in /etc/hosts which are not your local machine?22:50
genii-aroundjonah_: Yes :-) to file the bug against that package so it gets to the right people working on it22:50
glisstechgenii-around: only lines are both IP address 127.0.0.1 for localhost, and the machines hostname22:52
genii-aroundglisstech: OK. When you authenticate to your ISP, the computer usually does the username/password,  or does the intermediate piece of equipment like the router or modem do that?  ( eg: does the virtualized win7 on the same box have some outward-facing IP or does it get an internal range )22:54
