Unit193What's the question?09:00
SpaceAviatorTwo. 1. Is there no xubuntu grub theme this time around? Grub menu just says ubuntu and not xubuntu. 2. I see no bootsplash after install. My monitor literally goes into standby for a few seconds and then the login screen shows up. I dont think thats how its supposed to be09:02
SpaceAviatorUnit193: ?09:02
Unit193Didn't actually say Xubuntu either, you can get more info by editing the grub config.  No splash, could be booting too quick, but make sure you have a plymouth theme installed, could try to dpkg-reconfigure plymouth-theme-xubuntu-logo09:04
SpaceAviatorUnit193: I dont think its booting too quick. THis is the first time my monitor actually goes into stand by mode and then fires up again to the login screen09:05

xubuntu431Hi, I am having an issue.  I have downloaded Xubuntu 12.04 ISO, and used the Ubuntu Bootable USB program via windows to make a bootable thumbdrive.  It gets to the 'install xubuntu/try xubuntu' screen, then stop doing anything.  Is there a better program to use to make my thumbdrive a bootable device so I can install on other machines?09:10
bigcalmHi :) I popped in last night, but I guess it was a bit late. Laptop with an ATI graphics card was working just fine in 12.04. Upgraded to 12.10 and it's no longer using the proprietary driver. I've checked for and installed missing packages such as restricted extras, but 'jockey' doesn't see any drivers for me to use. Any hints would be welcome :)09:50
soreaubigcalm: Is there something wrong with the open radeon driver that you need to use the proprietary ati driver?09:53
bigcalmsoreau: well which ever driver it is using doesn't offer the correct screen modes. Currently I have an option of 800x600 and 1024x768. I don't recall the specific res of my laptop, but it is a touch bigger and a different ratio :)09:55
soreaubigcalm: Can you pastebin.com your /var/log/Xorg.0.log ?09:56
bigcalmSure. I'm on my workstation at the moment so will do so in a couple of mins09:56
bigcalmsoreau: http://paste.ubuntu.com/1288910/09:59
bigcalmI have to say that things are a lot harder to find since the menus were changed :S10:02
soreaubigcalm: It looks like you still have an fglrx_drm kernel module installed that's conflicting and missing xserver-xorg-video-ati package, so it's falling back to the vesa driver10:02
bigcalmThe laptop is one place that I haven't fiddled with xorg or any kernel modules. So it's interesting that it's like that10:03
soreauif you used the installer from the amd site, look for an uninstall script in /usr/share/ati/ to run. Either way, make sure /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/xorg/extra-modules/extra-modules.dpkg-tmp/modules/linux/libfglrxdrm.so and /etc/X11/xorg.conf do not exist10:04
bigcalmI would have installed the driver by using the Additional Drivers (jockey) interface10:05
soreauand of course remove any fglrx packages that might be installed10:05
bigcalmOk, thanks. I'll have a look10:05

pwnedulongtimeanyone else experiencing major screen tearing?19:40
doanHi guys! I got a problem to setup my dual monitor. I can't make my right screen be the primary. I'm using the nvidia driver and I tried with nvidia-settings but I can't make it happen. I also tried with xrandr. It's driving me nuts!19:47
Sysiyou want your panel on different screen? unlock and drag19:48
doanhere's my xrandr ouputs: http://paste.ubuntu.com/1290211/19:49
livingdaylightsomething has crashed here on a fresh install19:50
livingdaylight/usr/bin/xfce4-power-manager19:50
livingdaylightcrashed with SIGSEVG in vprint19:50
Sysi!bug19:51
ubottuIf you find a bug in Ubuntu or any of its derivatives, please file a bug using the command « ubuntu-bug <package> » - See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs for other ways to report bugs.19:51
Sysicrashing bugs should be easy to fix19:51
livingdaylightwhat about fixing it?19:51
livingdaylightis this going to happen all the time?19:51
doanSysi, when I set my right screen as a primary. My left screen become the right screen in my xubuntu. When I move the screen to the left. It move also the primary on my left screen19:52
nicklasbodoan: I have previously had problems with nvidia inverting the primary selection. Try to set your left monitor as primary, then the right becomes primary in my setup.19:53
nicklasboin nvidia-settings19:53
livingdaylightshould I be concerned?19:53
doannicklasbo, nothing changes. Same with xrandr --output DVI-I-2 --primary19:54
doanEither one or the other. Nothing changes19:54
nicklasbodoan: too bad. I use the tool disper to set monitors, it's pretty neat. You could give it a try?19:55
doannicklasbo, i don't know this tool. I'll give a try, thanks19:56
doannicklasbo, can I use it with the nvidia driver ?19:57
nicklasboyes, it basically just a tool for easily setting which monitor(s) to output on.19:57
doanokay sounds good19:58
nicklasbodo a sudo apt-get install disper and then depended on what your outputs are called something disper -d DFP-1,CRT-0 -e . The first listed display will be primary.19:58
puffQuestion:  if / is mounted under /dev/sda8 normally, will it be /dev/sda8 when I boot under a live CD?19:59
puffThat is, when I boot under a live CD and leave the / from my hard drive unmounted, so I can dd it, will it still be /dev/sda8?19:59
qohelethusing Xubuntu 12.10. Can't add items to main menu using alacarte in a specific category. Always is created in the Other menu20:09
qohelethalso, once I hit show, it always stays shown until I hit restore system configuration.20:09
WintreHi20:10
baizonqoheleth: alacarte is broken :)20:10
baizontry LXMenuEditor20:10
WintreIs there an Expose-alike for xfce?20:10
WintreOr do I need to install compiz?20:10
qoheleththanks20:10
baizonWintre: there are alternatives20:10
baizonknome told one, i forgot its name :(20:11
qohelethlol when are they fixing alacarte. Seems like it has been broken forever.20:11
WintreCan I read about 'em somewhere?20:11
baizonWintre: wait for him to answer :)20:11
loptaHow do I go about adding a network printer (PostScript, running lpd) to a Xubuntu box?20:11
baizonqoheleth: yes its broken with xfce 4.1020:11
baizonlopta: check if it is supported20:11
loptabaizon: Isn't there a generic method?20:13
Wintrelopta: That... should be the simplest possible thing20:14
WintreSince it's like the oldest Unix way of printing20:14
loptaWintre: ...that's what I was hoping20:14
Wintrelopta: There seems to be "LPD/LPR Host or printer" in the add printer dialog20:15
loptaOkay, I'll see if I can find that. Doesn't seem to be in the settings manager.20:15
Wintre?20:15
WintreIs there a "printers" item in the settings manager?20:15
loptaAh, System -> Printing20:16
WintreOh, I have a hardware -> printers20:16
loptaWoah!20:16
WintreSo, yeah, I've gotten to like Expose on the Mac20:16
WintreIs there an equivalent for Xfce?20:16
Sysiyou can get it with compiz20:17
WintreDoes the default wm not support it?20:17
Sysinope20:17
Wintrek20:18
WintreIs there a Right Way to change the window managers?20:18
Sysiinstall compix, it's settings manager and compiz-gnome, set it to draw window borders with gtk-window-decorator, run compiz --replace, save session on logout20:19
Wintrek, I'll give that a shot20:20
WintreDoes that include the settings manager?20:20
Wintreseems not20:20
Sysiit's called something like compizconfig-settings-manager20:20
Wintreyeah20:21
WintreGod, I hope I don't wind up with the same crap I had with gnome on ubuntu 1220:21
NoxityHey, is it possible for me to go from Ubuntu 12.04 to Xubuntu 12.10 without losing anything? I'm using Xubuntu now (I used the apt-get xubuntu-desktop to get it, so not a full install)20:25
loptaWow, I didn't expect that: Xubuntu found the printers on our network without having to be told about them.20:25
loptaI'm trying a test print now.20:25
SysiNoxity: it's same as full install20:26
martianNoxity: as far as I know, you need to simply install the xubuntu-desktop package, log out, and select an xubuntu session20:26
Sysikind of more, if you still have all unity-stuff installed20:26
NoxityIs it? Yay! So upgrading to 12.10 will be easy then20:26
NoxityI started on Ubuntu then started to hate Unity, so decided to switch20:27
Sysimake sure you don't have two -desktop packages before upgrading, it causes problems20:27
WintreSysi: So install xubuntu-desktop, and remove unity-desktop?20:27
WintreOr whatever ubuntu calls it20:27
Sysi!purexfce20:27
ubottuIf you want to remove all !KDE and !Gnome packages and have a default !Xubuntu system follow the instructions here « http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/purexfce »20:27
NoxityHow will I go about deleting Unity? Without destroying important stuff20:27
WintreSysi: Nice, thanks20:28
* Wintre passes on to similarly-irritated coworker20:28
NoxityThat removes all of the default programs installed, is there any way to just remove Unity?20:29
Sysiremove just unity packages20:29
puffMan, lsblk is handy.20:30
loptaOkay, so much for that theory.20:31
martianSo after upgrading my install, my virtual machines in vbox no longer are able to resolve dns names. Any thoughts on what that may be?20:31
martianOh duh, one google search and I got my answer. I'll go back to hiding now.20:33
NoxityThanks guys20:34
NoxityI've never seen people with intelligence on an IRC that isn't Linux related20:34
djznI installed kubuntu-desktop to test it, and it messed up xubuntu theme.... everything.. how do I get it back20:34
loptaIs there an easy way to add the core PostScript fonts (e.g. Helvetica, Times and Courier) to Xubuntu?20:44
TheSheeplopta: sure, just make a .fonts directory in your ~, then copy any fonts you want there and run fc-cache from terminal20:46
loptaThanks20:46
WintreSysi: Got it working, thanks.20:49
xubuntu605Is the opensource ATI video driver used by default in Xubuntu 12.10?20:51
loptaTheSheep: Does that take PostScript Type 1 fonts?20:52
TheSheeplopta: no idea, I'm sure that it takes ttf and otf20:54
TheSheepSo, I upgraded to quantal, and gvim now doesn't work -- it displays everything in black, anybody had this?20:55
WintreDoes Xubuntu not include the proprietary drivers manager thingy?21:03
WintreThe jockey-gtk package is mostly empty21:04
SysiIIRC it's deprecated and replaced with software-properties21:06
Wintrehm21:07
WintreOk, so what's The Right Way to install the proprietary drivers?21:07
WintreOh, I guess software-properties-gtk21:08
WintreThere we go21:08
WintreThanks agian21:09
WintreNow I just have to figure out why, with compiz, switching workspace with the panel applet causes the panel to disappear21:09
=== _df is now known as df
Wintrewhaaarrgarbl21:22
WintreHas anybody else seen a problem like that?21:25
puffHeya... so I finally finished up pending tasks, shut everythign down, and have everything sufficiently backed up for my peace of mind, time to do the safe-upgrade.21:48
puffI tried just "sudo aptitude safe-upgrade" and got:   Unable to safely resolve dependencies, try running with --full-resolver.21:49
puffSo, trying "sudo aptitude safe-upgrade --full-revolver", now it wants to upgrade a zillion  package... any last words?21:49
GridCubedunno, neve used aptitude to update21:50
puffHm, "sudo aptitude safe-upgrade --full-resolver" seems to have completed without any error messages.  What now?  Should I reboot?22:22
puffThis ubuntu 11.4 with xubuntu-desktop installed, btw.22:23
GridCubepuff, i like to always run sudo update-grub before rebooting aftern an upgrade22:24
WilliamWallaceHi all. Why I cannot watch flash videos?22:26
GridCubeyou need to install the xubuntu-restricted-extras22:26
bntlyAww yeah.23:09
bntlyFree friday afternoon work beer.23:09
TheSheepwe have #xubuntu-offtopic23:12
