TheLordOfTimeanyone here know how to make a git server to hold git repositories on a local server installation?\00:20
sarnoldTheLordOfTime: is 'gitolite' what you're looking for?00:21
TheLordOfTimeperhaps00:23
TheLordOfTimei've never set up a git server before, so... *shrugs*00:23
sarnoldthere's also git-daemon(1) .. hrm.00:24
TheLordOfTimehmm...00:28
TheLordOfTimehelp.ubuntu.com for git refers to a package removed from precise and later00:29
TheLordOfTimeo.O00:29
sarnoldwas that gitosis? :)00:29
TheLordOfTimemhm00:29
TheLordOfTimei assume gitolite replaced it?00:31
sarnoldI think so; at least, apt-cache search gitosis brings up gitolite. (Which is how I re-found it now, since I"m still not used to the name gitolite yet. :)00:33
TheLordOfTimeperhaps i should follow the gitolite guide for setup/deployment? http://sitaramc.github.com/gitolite/qi.html00:34
TheLordOfTime!gitolite00:34
TheLordOfTimeNO FACOITDS?00:34
TheLordOfTimefigures00:35
TheLordOfTimei assume gitolite's package comes with some predefault setups, or at least asks you for things along the way for setup?00:40
sarnoldone hopes the package has a reasonable debconf interface00:41
TheLordOfTimewe can only hope00:42
TheLordOfTimebut first, KERNEL UPGRADE00:42
TheLordOfTimeWHAT FUN!00:42
TheLordOfTime>.>00:42
sarnoldWHEE!00:42
* TheLordOfTime picks up a sword and throws it at the repository server for being slow00:42
andolTheLordOfTime: Does it help?00:43
TheLordOfTimeno.  but its definitely a way to get out the rage :P00:43
TheLordOfTimennnope it has no debconf interface00:49
TheLordOfTimeso it fails to install00:49
TheLordOfTimeTHAT'S A PACKAGE FAIL!00:49
* TheLordOfTime condemns whoever packaged it to /dev/null for eternity00:49
sarnoldnownow, they did save you the trouble of finding the upstream, selecting compilation defaults (if any), installing all the build-deps, and compiling it yourself.. :D00:52
* TheLordOfTime glares at sarnold00:54
sarnoldhehe00:54
TheLordOfTimei'm not sure whether you're looking to be the one to file the bug, or whether  you're just trying to be annoying00:54
sarnoldmore a mixture of helpful/annoying than outright annoying. :)00:55
TheLordOfTimethere's a way to fix that00:55
* TheLordOfTime grabs the electrified stick00:55
sarnoldhehe00:55
TohuwHow can I obtain the files necessary to PXE boot Ubuntu 12.10?00:55
TheLordOfTimesarnold, oh i found a bug00:56
TheLordOfTimeperhaps with apt-get, perhaps not00:56
TheLordOfTimesarnold, it has a debconf interface, but it doesn't run.   unless you do dpkg-reconfigure00:56
TheLordOfTimeit doesn't run during apt-get install00:57
sarnoldTheLordOfTime: I think that's configurable somewhere...00:57
TheLordOfTimeit should be default :/00:57
TheLordOfTimemeh,i'll fix it later00:58
sarnoldTheLordOfTime: sudo dpkg-reconfigure debconf01:00
sarnolddepending upon what priority you pick, that'll determine whether or not you're prompted for questions01:00

TheLordOfTimewell regardless, the gitolite package is either incomplete or broken04:39
TheLordOfTimeyou can't clone the admin repo04:39
TheLordOfTimeand you cant do things even if you follow its instructions04:39
TheLordOfTimeso apparently, i'm going to have to go get  version 3 of gitolite04:39
TheLordOfTime(which isnt in precise, nor in quantal, or R)04:39

phizesHi, I'm setting up nfs with kerberos as per https://help.ubuntu.com/community/NFSv4Howto on Ubuntu 12.04, but does anyone have any documentation on how to mount the nfs share in Windows 7, and map windows users to Linux users?20:38
phizesI know it's more of a Windows question but not sure where to turn to find an answer, and so far windows documentation has been horrible to work with :-/20:39
RoyKphizes: idmapd and winbind should do it (IIRC)20:41
RoyKperhaps winbind isn't needed in a kerberos environment, but a bit unsure there20:41
RoyKidmapd works well, though20:41
phizesRoyK: Thank you, I will follow up on that20:42
RoyKI've used idmapd with openindiana for serving data over zfs/cifs (not samba), but I'm unsure about nfs+kerberos support on windows20:43
RoyKbetter use samba for windows connectivity - it'll probably save you a headache or two...20:43
phizesAfaik Windows 7 Ultimate has support for nfs and kerberos, it's mentioned in Windows documentation, but I can't find an example of how it is used, Samba is causing me problems currently for a few reasons, related to file permissions and somehow it's smb shares seem to be slow, Windows sharing files to another windows machine seems to be slower than Linux to Linux with nfs, so I was hoping to dodge a bullet or two and allow Windows users to20:48
phizeschanging file permissions over a samba share seems to set ACL permissions which I have no idea how to deal with20:49
tedskiin my experience, smb outperforms nfs with minimal tuning20:49
phizestedski: large or small files? throughput wise or latency wise?20:52
tedskilarge and small files... throughput20:54
tedskii've never had latency issues on either, so i've never collected data20:55
phizesI'm mainly bothered by the latency issue, I mean it's not terrible, but nfs shares are definitely snappier on linux than the same directory through smb, on both linux and windows, though it may just be because I had set it up poorly, also we have a lot of power cuts and no UPS so I tend to skip anything which increases the chance of data loss in the case of a crash or outright power loss20:59
RoyKphizes: I'm not sure if samba supports windows' ACLs20:59
RoyKphizes: the reason I want to encourage samba over NFS, is that Windows usually sucks badly on non-windows protocols21:00
phizesRoyK: Naw, if a windows user changes the permissions of a file from the windows pc, the file in linux shows up as having an ACL associated to it, which I have nfi on how to edit21:01
tedskithat's weird... i haven't seen that in my experiences21:01
phizes:S21:01
tedskii also wouldn't have any idea how to edit it21:02
tedskii know, i know, i'm not very helpful :/21:02
phizesRoyK: True, but the ability to edit unix file permissions from the21:03
phizeswindows gui would be hoighly prized by my brother21:03
tedskiyou can do that21:04
tedskiright click, properties, security21:04
tedskiand you'll see the windows equiv of owner/group/all21:05
phizestedski: over smb? because that is exactly what is creating the ACL which are a problem for me in linux21:05
tedskiyes, over smb... i'm assumign you have it configured to allow the ACLs you are seeing21:06
phizestedski: I really couldn't find how to stop them from being created, and the samba config is stock for the most part21:07
tedskiwould you mind sanitizing and pastebin'ing your conf?21:08
tedskii'd be happy to take a look for you21:08
phizeskk, will do, though I'm sure it will be an embarrassing experience for myself :)21:09
tedskimeh21:10
tedskiwe've all been new to everything at one point21:10
tedskiand we've all written sloppy configs21:10
phizestedski: http://pastebin.com/YceQwtKd Haven't touched it for a while, but it caused much pain last time so I was going to try out for nfs this time21:18
tedskiphizes: and what are the mounting options for /some/shareX21:21
phizesIt's exst4 if it matters, and 'defaults', as per how Ubuntu set's up the drive on install21:23
phizesthey are different folders on the same drive21:23
phizesI got tired of trying to work out hoew much space to partition stuff into a long time ago so now just go with guided and no lvm on install21:24
phizesI think I just reealised I shouldn't be using admin users, as this, I think causes smb to fork as root, where is probably half my pain comes from21:26
