phillwhi, I'd like a bit of assistance as to where to file a bug against.00:04
micahgphillw: that's what the channel is here for :)00:12
phillwI seem to have http://www.codewhirl.com/2012/03/ubuntu-fail-to-login-after-upgrade-to-u12-04-lts-precise-pangolin/ in Quantal.00:13
micahgBug #1036830 ?00:14
ubot2Launchpad bug 1036830 in lightdm (Ubuntu) "Can't log in unless remove .Xauthority or use gdm" [Undecided,New] https://launchpad.net/bugs/103683000:14
phillwmicahg: that could well be the one...00:16
phillwAHHH..... now I see.... it's the ~/.Xauthority.00:17
phillwmicahg: So, basically, anyone upgrading who has a separate /home is going to get bitten?00:18
micahgidk00:19
* micahg had no problem00:19
phillwMine was a clean 12.10 install, maybe upgrade goes okay.00:19
micahgoh?  that sounds even worse :()00:19
phillwI have /home on a separate partition. keeps it slightly safe when 'playing'.00:20
micahgoh, so clean install, but old /home00:20
phillwBut, yes, I do recall having to reset .Xauth a cycle, or two, back....00:21
phillwmicahg: indeed... there is no place like 127.0.0.100:21
micahghehe00:22
phillwReet, thanks, I can now go dig out the instructions to reset the .Xauth and it should, if behaves like last year (or 18 months ago), just work.00:23
phillwI'll write it up to a FAQ for the release area, so as you people can point them to it until they actually fix the bug :P00:25
micahgphillw: who is that file owned by?00:26
phillwmicahg: let me just get ssh into it00:28
phillwmicahg: it is owned by 100000:32
micahgphillw: hrm , who's 1000 on your system?00:32
phillwno one, that is why it states the number and not a user.00:33
micahgthere's your problem :)00:33
micahgif you're using an old /home, you might have to do that type of cleanup00:33
micahgalthough, I still have no idea why you'd get a user installed by default not at 100000:34
phillwlet me go mount / and have a look at the passwd file00:36
phillwhmm, there is no user 1000#00:38
phillwmicahg: hang on a mo.... when did ubuntu change the root / admin stuff?00:39
phillwas in dropping user 'root'00:40
micahgwell, root's not enabled by default00:40
phillwmicahg: it was droppeda couple of cycles ago... I'm mad at myself for forgetting that it was mentioned that an 'upgrade' could cope, but as this was a re-install it had no idea what was going on & played my the 'new' rules.00:46
phillwmicahg: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PrecisePangolin/ReleaseNotes/UbuntuDesktop#PrecisePangolin.2BAC8-ReleaseNotes.2BAC8-CommonInfrastructure.Common_Infrastructure00:48
phillwI've slept since then, that is the problem.00:48
phillwwell, not problem, just what needs to be fixed on anyone facing the same issue.00:49
phillwmicahg: erm, there is a problem,01:08
micahgyes?01:09
* micahg 's mind reading device is offline01:09
phillw1000 is phillw on ubuntu01:14
vibhavDoes somebody know what do I give as a cmment before closing https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/107011103:51
ubot2Launchpad bug 1070111 in Ubuntu "Spyware coverage incomplete - limited to Dash" [Undecided,Invalid]03:51
vibhavPeople should stop this, its enever going to benefit the project in any way :(03:52
vibhavnever*03:52
micahgvibhav: don't feed the trolls :)04:19
vibhavmicahg: Yeah, commenting would make it more problematic04:30

ex0aI upgraded from 12.04 to 12.10 (edited source list and dist-upgrade, don't know if that is different than the "ubuntu way") and the new dmraid broke grub06:18
ex0ai was unable to update-grub or grub-install06:18
ex0aeventually i ended up using a boot disk to boot the 3.5 kernel (instead of the old 3.2) and i was able to install and configure grub-pc again06:19
ex0ai haven't rebooted to check but i had 0 issues installing this time06:19
ex0ashould i create a bug report for that?06:19
maxbHi, in Quantal I seem to have lost the "Safely Remove" option from the unity launcher right click menu for devices. What package would this be reportable against?06:51

KverasHi. I need some advise on how to properly report a bug that has been following me for a good while now. It's probably not a bug that should be posted to the Ubuntu package, but rather upstream, since the problem is present both in Ubuntu, Arch and any other recent distribution that I have tried so far. The help I need is to figure out what package and what upstream project I should report to. The problem is that when dual booting Linux and W11:18
Kverasin 7 there are severe mouse glitches in Linux. The problem is described in greater detail here: http://askubuntu.com/questions/145175/after-reboot-from-windows-mouse-click-does-not-work-properly . The problem is still present in 12.10. Can anyone have a look and help me figuring out where this bug should be posted?11:18
civijahy guys!11:20
civijaCan a bug which is marked as 'fixed release' be changed again to something else?11:21
civijaI was following one bug and someone marked it as 'fix released' but it isn't fixed11:22
civijaa multiple users confirmed that it isn't fixed11:22
mitya57civija: bug # please.11:28
civijamitya57: #104819311:32
mitya57civija: done11:33
civijamitya57: tnx!11:33
civijamitya57: can I ask one more question?11:36
mitya57please do11:36
civijaI have another bug #1037125 and I set it to 'fix committed'11:37
ubot2Launchpad bug 1037125 in linux (Ubuntu) "Bluetooth device AR3012 not working properly" [Medium,Fix committed] https://launchpad.net/bugs/103712511:37
civijabecause it is changed in kernel upstream11:37
civijaand this kernel is not yet released with any ubuntu version11:37
civijais this correct?11:37
yofel_civija: not quite, the kernel team has it's own bug policies. Please read https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/KernelTeamBugPolicies#Bug_Triage first before touching kernel bugs11:57

emptythevoidCould someone kindly look at this bug report and see if I've filed it against the correct package?13:14
emptythevoidhttps://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/107000413:14
ubot2Launchpad bug 1070004 in nautilus (Ubuntu) " For applications using simplified save dialogues, selecting a destionation through "Other..." saves to /HOME directory" [Undecided,New]13:14
mitya57emptythevoid, no, it should be gtk+3.0 or gtk+2.0 depending on what version of gtk is your app using13:18
mitya57by the way, I remember the same error was occuring for me, so I'll now confirm it13:18
emptythevoidThat makes me feel better.  Let me see if I can figure out which one DeVeDe uses...13:19
emptythevoidThanks mate :)13:19
mitya57I got that with gnome-screenshot which uses gtk+3.013:20
emptythevoidLet me give that a go13:20
emptythevoidScreenshot is working okay for me, but it is the same kind of simplified save dialogue box I'm talking about13:21
emptythevoidSo if a dependency says python-gtk2, then it's using gtk2, correct?13:22
mitya57emptythevoid: yes, I've already assigned that to gtk+3.0, but you can add a task using "Also affects distribution" link13:23
emptythevoidAh, I see where you changed the package for me.  Thanks so much.  Had a hard time getting help for this.13:24
emptythevoidThanks again. :)13:25

offedmicahg, no enough information to find where the bug is !  Perhaps it is happening when computer is idle for a long time. I am not sure how i can debug (besides logs) when my system completely freeze. But i will try this time :). Should i try with new kernel from kernel.org or ubuntu repos?17:52
micahgoffed: follow the instructions in the linked wiki page in that comment17:52
