deitarionOh, good god! Somehow kubuntu-desktop wrecked my GTK+ button order too!01:17
SIR_Taco_ deitarion: no options in System Settings -> Application Appearance -> Gtk Configuration?01:27
deitarionSIR_Taco_:  I had to remove kde-config-gtk because, even when I copied my font-hinting and font choices from LXDE's appearance controls into SystemSettings, Firefox ignored them.01:28
deitarionAs soon as I went `sudo apt-get purge kde-config-gtk` and hit F5, my browser fonts were back to being comfortable.01:29
SIR_Taco_deitarion: the Gtk font settings in the configuration didn't help?01:30
deitarionSIR_Taco_: It only let me specify one font. Somehow, kde-config-gtk completely changed how Firefox resolved both "sans-serif" and "monospace" to give me something much uglier.01:30
deitarionAt the moment, I'm trying to figure out whether it's Kubuntu's fault or Firefox's fault that the update I just applied coincided with the background on my awesomebar completion drop-down going from white to gray.01:32
SIR_Taco_deitarion: it's probably removing kde-config-gtk that did that01:32
deitarionSIR_Taco_: OK, then I have to remove ALL of kubuntu-desktop (or worse, reinstall from the LiveCD) to restore the white background on an LXDE desktop with a handful of KDE apps like I used to have?01:33
SIR_Taco_deitarion: you're using LXDE or KDE?01:35
deitarionSIR_Taco_: I'm running Lubuntu. Most of this nonsense happened automatically without even logging out when I ran `sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop`01:35
deitarionThat is, I'm running the "Lubuntu" session, not the bare, un-tweaked LXDE one.01:36
deitarion...and I haven't logged out since apt-getting kubuntu-desktop. Everything started messing up the instant it was installed.01:36
deitarionGiven that Firefox is the only app thatforcing KDE buton01:37
deitarionUgh.01:37
deitarionGiven that Firefox is the only app that's forcing KDE button order on its GTK+ Open/Save dialogs, I get the impression that the mis-colored drop-down is Firefox's impression of QGtkStyle's impression of my GTK color scheme.01:37
SIR_Taco_ok... so you want to use KDE? or you installed Kubuntu-Desktop package in order to use some KDE programs?01:38
deitarionSIR_Taco_: I was already using all the KDE programs I wanted. I installed kubuntu-desktop so that, when I can spare a few hours, I can give KWin and Plasma a second chance since the KWin devs are the only guys who have committed to forcing server-side window decorations on windows when distros start to switch to Wayland.01:39
SIR_Taco_oh ok01:40
SIR_Taco_does LXDE not have a gtk config? (haven't used it in years)01:40
deitarionSIR_Taco_: It does but KDE's overrides it.01:41
deitarionSort of like how, when you've got gnome-settings-daemon running, GTK+ ignores the contents of your config files.01:41
SIR_Taco_ok I see01:43
deitarionThat's what I meant when I said that simply installing it messed things up. As soon as I launched a KDE application (even one that had been installed all along), it propagated a chain reaction which ended with existing GTK+ apps receiving a change-of-settings message and applying the new KDE-originated theming settings.01:45
SIR_Taco_deitarion: what about moving your .kde folder?01:47
deitarionSIR_Taco_: How would that help? It'd just reset my K3b settings and restore KDE to default Kubuntu behaviours... which are what I'm trying to kill off in favor of the Lubuntu look and feel they're trying to override.01:48
deitarionRemember, the fundamental problem is that Kubuntu defaults are overriding Lubuntu defaults even when I'm logged into Lubuntu but I don't like the Kubuntu look and feel.01:49
deitarionI get the impression I'm probably going to have to remove kubuntu-desktop and everything it pulled, block off some time during my winter break, and dive into the Qt and Firefox source code to figure out what precendence rules they're applying and how, and then write a patch, plugin, or config tweak to un-break things.01:51

deitarionSIR_Taco_: Probably some half-assed attempt to "Just Work™" with the user's desktop settings.02:02

douglSIR_Taco_, sorry - catching up now = thanks :)17:52
SIR_Taco_dougl: nothing uses that 'secret pass code' thingy that windows 7 has for sharing folders/printers except for windows 7 (and likely vista), so you'll have to set that "Use user accounts" option and type in your windows user/pass when setting up the printer in Kubuntu17:55
uglyoldbobim having a problem with my ssh connections. If I leave an ssh connection open and then move my laptop out of the wireless network, the ssh connection just will sit there and do nothing. It doesn't work as expected, but I never see a timeout.17:56
douglSIR_Taco_, well... I have read it and it seems to be exactly what I am doing (except I am doing the kubuntu-ized steps) but my windows machine is on 66 of 122 updates so I am at a standstill for the moment...17:57
lordievaderuglyoldbob: That is because ssh doesn't send a keep alive frame.17:57
douglSIR_Taco_, you installed your win7 prntr in system settings?17:57
uglyoldboblordievader: but it is NOT timing out or exiting, I have to kill the terminal manually17:58
SIR_Taco_dougl: yes. the computer shows up, but no the printer. But write down the printer name or name it something easy, and manually type it in17:58
=== Kvakz is now known as Kvaks
lordievaderuglyoldbob: Uhu, that is what I said, without the keep-alive frame the session never knows that the connection is dropped.17:58
yofel_uglyoldbob: it will time out when the socket dies, otherwise it simply tries to keep the session alive over TCP without checking if there is a response17:58
yofel_uglyoldbob: you could look into mosh (server/client wrapper for ssh) if that really is a problem for you17:59

Kelhimhello - I've got short question concerning a small bug which has already been fixed upstream19:20
shadeslayerKelhim: sure19:21
lordievader!ask | Kelhim19:21
ubottuKelhim: Please don't ask to ask a question, simply ask the question (all on ONE line and in the channel, so that others can read and follow it easily). If anyone knows the answer they will most likely reply. :-) See also !patience19:21
Kelhimthere is a very small and simple patch for KDE SC 4.9.3, which fixes the bug that Samba share passwords can't be stored from Dolphin. Any chance this patch makes it into Kubuntu 12.04?19:22
shadeslayermmm .. not possible right away I'm afraid19:22
shadeslayerKelhim: 4.9.3 will be out in a few weeks, and Precise will be updated, any chances that you could wait until then?19:23
shadeslayeror I could teach you how to build your own package ;)19:23
SIR_Taco_shadeslayer: does it start with "sudo apt-dont-make-any-plans" ? ; )19:24
shadeslayer:P19:25
popcbvHow can I apply kde configuration after a change in one specific rc file?19:25
shadeslayerbut srsly, it's fairly simple to just upload a patched source to a PPA and install the debs19:25
shadeslayerpopcbv: I don't understand the question I'm afraid19:26
popcbvshadeslayer: kde has lots of files with rc as a suffix.19:26
shadeslayercorrect19:26
popcbvshadeslayer: if I change one of them, nothing actually happens.19:26
popcbvshadeslayer: the question is how to let kde react to the information in those files.19:27
SIR_Taco_popcbv: logout, log back in19:27
shadeslayernope ^19:27
popcbvSIR_Taco_: that's a really, really bad solution.19:27
shadeslayerfirst off, there's a kded that should be monitoring rc file changes19:27
SIR_Taco_shadeslayer: didn't know that, good to know19:27
shadeslayerbut if the kded is taking too much time to see those changes, you can run : kbuildsycoca419:27
popcbvshadeslayer: except it doesn't work?19:27
shadeslayerpopcbv: which rc file are you changing btw?19:28
popcbvshadeslayer: I'd say that if everything would be working, that it should react within about 5 ms.19:28
popcbvshadeslayer: khotkeysrc19:28
popcbvIn Emacs you can just do (setq foobar "newvalue") and it works within microseconds.19:28
popcbvI am not sure where all the additional infrastructure is needed for.19:29
shadeslayerhmm19:29

Kelhimshadeslayer: hm, I'm actually not personally concerned by this bug in kio_smb_auth, but I can imagine one could fix it by oneself19:34
popcbvshadeslayer: that overwrites my change to the file.19:35
shadeslayerhah19:35
shadeslayerpopcbv: unload khotkeys module, write changes, load it again19:35
shadeslayerbecause obviously the config files are synced with whatever is in the program memory when the module is unloaded19:35
popcbvshadeslayer: same result19:36
popcbvshadeslayer: unexpectedly19:36
shadeslayerwell ... uh .. that was not anticipated19:36

popcbvshadeslayer: I did your command; sleep 10; your other command19:36
shadeslayerso I can try it on my machine19:36
popcbvshadeslayer: during the sleep, I saved the file.19:37
shadeslayerright, can I have the khotkeysrc file?19:37
popcbvshadeslayer: and no, a write doesn't take 10 seconds.19:37
popcbvshadeslayer: I am sure it's independent of that.19:37
popcbvshadeslayer: just create a keybinding for f6 first.19:37
popcbvshadeslayer: then, save the file, and use e.g. a sed script to replace it.19:38
popcbvshadeslayer: or use kwriteconfig19:38
shadeslayercan you give me the kwriteconfig command you used?19:38
popcbvshadeslayer: kwriteconfig --group Data_3_12Triggers0 --key Key --file <file> F1219:39
popcbvshadeslayer: probably completely useless for you19:39
popcbvInteresting how (global-set key (kbd "<f12>" 'function) is just so much easier19:40

popcbvKDE is just overly complicated here.19:40

shadeslayerjust a test to check if it's a issue with the config that's written or KDE19:49
shadeslayerokay ... in that case, I should sleep :P19:50
Kelhimshadeslayer: If I understood you correctly, bug fixes like this for Samba shares could be included in Precise (but surely not 4.9.3 as a whole) when 4.9.3 is out? That would answer my question, thank you19:52
shadeslayerKelhim: okay question, did password protected samba shares ever work?19:53
shadeslayerin 4.5/6/7 ?19:53
Kelhimthe last time I used Samba it must have been 4.2 or earlier - I honestly can't not remember19:54
shadeslayerKelhim: there's a policy for SRU's that prevents us from shipping new features, if you remember it working in some previous version of KDE, it'll classify as a regression and we can do a SRU19:55
shadeslayerKelhim: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates19:56
Kelhimshadeslayer: hm, okay, I'll have to look into that19:57
* shadeslayer is reading the bug report19:58
Kelhimshadeslayer: as far as I understand the report at the KDE bug tracker, the checkbox in the dialog simply doesn't store the password19:59

shadeslayer4.9.3 will be released on 6th November20:07
popcbv...20:07
popcbvWhy do you have bureaucracy?20:09
Kelhimshadeslayer: I'm asking on behalf on somebody you prefers to keep Precise installed, but otherwise an upgrade would be an option, of course - but I think there are many users who would appreciate this small fix in Precise20:10
Kelhim* who *20:10
popcbvCan't you just put every fix into a release and reject everything which doesn't work?20:10
popcbvAnd if you absolutely have to test before you have any confidence whether it works, perhaps add more static types such that you don't have to guess?20:11
shadeslayerKelhim: ofcourse, here's the thing, there are a set of rules we have to follow in order to keep quality, so while I'm reasonably certain the SRU team will go ahead and ask me to wait till 4.9.3 is out, I'll try asking them what can be done to fix this right away :)20:11

dougland when I do that for samba what gets broken in the process?23:15
douglwill my home dir and all configs and e-mail docs and downloads work in 12.10 maybe I should consider installing 12.10?23:16
douglSIR_Taco_, I think we have alot of time invested here... we need to follow thru and at least we can say we learned something?23:17
douglI dunno - Linux.... choices choices and then more decisions23:17
douglI remember choosing ubuntu... that was the end of head scratchin... finally a distro that just worked.23:18
SIR_Taco_dougl: you wouldn't be upgrading to 12.10, you'd just end up with some updated programs/files from the newer release23:19
SIR_Taco_those that are deemed stable23:19
xixor12.10 has been more stable than 12.04 for me so far23:21
douglsure23:21
