dj_segfaultHi.  I'm trying to print from one kubutnu 12.04 box (A) to another.(B).  B sees the printer, and I had no problems adding it, but when I try to print a test page, it says "Printer FOO may not be connected." every few seconds.  The printer is connected to A and works fine.  AFAICT, CUPS is set up to accept jobs from everyone on system A.  What can I check out to diagnose this?00:47

xixorI know this isn't #vbox, but I am having trouble getting a VM to autostart when my system boots.  I have registered the VM, set --autostart-enabled on, but it won't start on boot.  After booting, if I run: sudo service vboxautostart-service start, it seems to run fine.   Right now I am thinking that the /etc/init.d/vboxautostart-service script isn't started by the sudo root user when the system starts up?  Or that script isn't set to start up by d13:41
BluesKajGraf_Westerholt, usually when I'm not at my pc , I'll mark myself "away"13:42
Graf_Westerholt:)13:42
BluesKajIt's good to know that the nouveau is buggy on some nvidia cards , I wasn't aware that it was and I've been recommending it's use thinking it was problem free, Graf_Westerholt13:44
Graf_WesterholtMe, too.13:45
xixorfor example, I used this command to enable the init.d scrit: sudo update-rc.d vboxautostart-service defaults 99 1013:45
Graf_WesterholtMy next problem is the „suspend to ram“. :) Linux goes to suspend to ram, but the PC keeps running, means the CPU fan is running but the hard drives are of. I cannot wake it up, I have to do a reset.13:46
Graf_Westerholt*off13:47
lordievaderxixor: Isn't that command without the "99 10"?13:47
BluesKajxixor, perhaps set the script in system settings> startup & shutdown13:47
lordievaderxixor: Ah never mind.13:48
xixorBluesKaj: I'd like it to run on system start, not when I log into KDE, that area will run the scripts when I log on to kde, right?13:48
lordievaderxixor: http://www.debuntu.org/how-to-manage-services-with-update-rc.d13:48
BluesKajGraf_Westerholt, are you trying to shutdown ? , if so there's a small^ beside the red shutdown button13:49
BluesKajclick that13:49
Graf_WesterholtBluesKaj, I am not stupid ;)13:49
BluesKajxixor, then your run level should be set for the script , but not sure how that works anymore13:50
Graf_WesterholtBluesKaj, Kubuntu does go to suspend to RAM. But does not finish it.13:51
xixorBluesKaj: Yes.. for instance, there is a script S20vboxautostart-service -> /init.d/vboxautostart-service in /etc/rc5.d13:51
BluesKajGraf_Westerholt, not stupid of course , but I was getting the suspend to ram when clicking the shudown13:52
lordievaderxixor: What is in the /etc/init.d/vboxautostart-service ?13:52
Graf_WesterholtBluesKaj, no that's all ok. If I click shutdown is shuts down and the PC is off.13:53
xixor lordievader : It is a script provided by virtualbox to auto start virtual machines13:53
lordievaderxixor: Yes but what is in it, perhaps it is waiting for something.13:54
BluesKajhmm, not here , I get suspend to ram , I have to click on the the little ^ to shutdown13:55
xixorWhat user do run-level 5 scripts run as?  Do they run as root?13:55
lordievaderxixor: Yes.13:55
Graf_WesterholtBluesKaj, how did you do that? I like to switch Hibernat and shutdown.13:55
xixorlordievader: When I run:  sudo /etc/init.d/vboxautostart-service start   so it seems to work13:56
xixorlordievader: I think that a problem might be that virtualbox creates a database of VMs for each user, and you have to register the database.  Since there is no root user, it can't find the database when the system boots.  However, when I sudo as root, it somehow finds the database I made for root through sudo13:57
lordievaderxixor: Login as root (sudo -i) and run VBoxManage list vms13:58
lordievadererr vboxmanage*13:58
xixorlordievader: Oh, neat, I didn't know you could actually log in as root13:59
xixorlordievader: I thought there was "no" root user the way it was setup with sudo13:59
lordievaderxixor: There is a root user, but it is disabled, you can not login with username root. su root will error.14:00
xixorah, I see14:01
xixoryes, so root has the VM registered in the database14:01
lordievaderxixor: Is your vm going to be headless?14:01
xixorlordievader: Yes14:01
xixorlordievader: It runs my awesome website, www.xixor.net14:02
xixorlordievader: It is important for the entire internets to have zero downtime from this website14:02
lordievaderxixor: You could use a work-around, make your own script with vboxmanage startvm <vm name> --type headless14:02
BluesKajGraf_Westerholt, well I'm currently testing 13.04 so our shutdown options obviously differ14:03
lordievaderxixor: Add "" to the name though.14:03
Graf_WesterholtBluesKaj ok. Do you have an idea how I can change shutdown with hibernate button?14:03

c2tarunmy KDE screen is freezing after sometime. Nothing is reponding not even Ctrl+Alt+F2. is there any place (any log) or something from where I can find the problem?16:40
Obsidian1723You could check in /var/log/messages16:40
lordievaderc2tarun: Try /var/log/syslog or /var/log/dmesg, seems to me like a gfx driver that is failing.16:41
Obsidian1723It may be a problem with X and not KDE.16:41
lordievaderc2tarun: That is also a good one, check Xorg.log too.16:42
Obsidian1723You can also always try sudo dpkg-reconfigure name-of-the-package-here16:42
Obsidian1723ie: sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-org16:42
Obsidian1723ie: sudo dpkg-reconfigure kde-desktop16:42

c2tarundont you guys think that these logs will also get updated when I hard boot my lappy?16:42
Obsidian1723They will, but old logs don't vanquish on reboot,.16:43
Obsidian1723logs arel ogs and remain unless deleted.16:43
c2tarunObsidian1723: yeah, but I have to figure out the point just before freeze, any suggestions for that?16:44
Obsidian1723Well, you would need to have something active logging all the time, like sysklogd16:44
c2tarunwhat is that?16:45
Obsidian1723so you can specify exactly what you want to watch. The system logs all the time, but if you suspect something and want to actively monitor it (if the system doesn't monitor it by default), then you need another tool to set that up.16:47

xixormeh, I will stick with KDE plasma as my desktop.  xfce4 looks awesome.  I just don't have the energy for more configurations19:36
ndegruchyxixor: xfce is great if you want GNOME with all the... well, GNOME19:37
ndegruchys/with/without/19:37
xixoroh, xfce is tied in with gnome?  I thought it was standalone?19:37
ndegruchyit's tied to GNOME 2, I believe... it's been a while19:37
ndegruchyyeah, aptitude reports it requires GTK219:39
xixoronly last nagging issue with kde, is that dolphin seems to take a while to launch, but it's not a big deal19:40
ndegruchya very small set of libraries, though19:40
chronosndegruchy: take only ~30 min here, not much19:40
ndegruchyxixor: dolphin is a little heavy, but I find that it's a great file manager, I believe there are lighter options -- some that come with RazorQT might be available19:41
chronoswhat is 'kubuntu active tech preview'?19:42
ndegruchyfor touch-enabled devices19:42
chronosoh, nice19:43

bjrohanI am having all kinds of issues with ffmpeg and codecs, and getting files converted, mainly using KDenlive. does anyone have experience in this aren19:46
xixorhm..... gotta reboot... lols19:47
BluesKajlordievader, i guess the server edition doesn't use that silly /etc/resolvconf/resolv.conf.d/head file , because /etc/resolv.conf is empty unless I add the nameservers to the 'head" file , and /etc/network/interfaces doesn't help connect to the nameservers even if they 're listed19:54
lordievaderBluesKaj: I've read somewhere that in order to have dns-nameservers in /interfaces work you needed a package, lets see if I can find that for you.19:55
lordievaderBluesKaj: The package resolvconf it is appearantly.19:56
BluesKajok lordievader , thanks19:56

natmanunable to shut down my laptop, unless i disable wireless before shut down, can anyone help?19:59
lordievadernatman: You might use a workaround, add the command "rfkill block wifi" to the shutdown routine.20:01
natmanlordievader:  how do i do that, and if i do wil it be turned on during start up?20:02
douglthat was no good - with the TV upstairs connected the computer defaults to that display.20:02
lordievadernatman: Might very well be, you should look it up on google, I'm not entirely sure but you need to add your script to /etc/rc1.d/.20:04

Preflexnsmgo: dbus-send --type=method_call --dest=org.freedesktop.ScreenSaver /ScreenSaver org.freedesktop.ScreenSaver.Lock22:42
nsmgoPreflex: thanks; that would require the xscreensaver package right?22:52
Preflexnsmgo:  should only require kde's screensaver packages.22:53
Preflexnsmgo: they're installed by default in kubuntu22:53
nsmgoPreflex: should I use && or & if i want to link that command with pm-suspend-hyrbird22:57
