puffI need an object-based drawing program.  QCad can't open the file I'm trying to draw on, and Inkscape doesn't seem to have a simple segmented-straight-lines tool.  And when I try to just draw some rectangles, it doesn't seem to actually take any of the stroke-fill settings.01:25
puffI'm just trying to mark up some floorplans that I was sent in PDF format.  I used gimp to convert it to PNG, I just want to draw some simple boxes or straight-sided shapes on it, things like "stairwell would go *here*".01:25
David-Ahave you tried "Dia Diagram Editor"? it is more for 2D diagrams, flow charts and such and not for 3D drawings or detailed artistic work.01:31
puffDavid-A: Thanks, I'll take a look at that.01:38

xubuntu888Quick question. I use AMD Catalyst software to get audio working over HDMI. The newest version no longer supports my video card. I have no other alternatives to get HDMI audio to work correct?03:37

ewethi, what happned to xfce4-taskbar-plugin (http://goodies.xfce.org/projects/panel-plugins/xfce4-taskbar-plugin) there's not even a reference in 12.10 anymore -- is XFCE 4.10 incompatible?05:46
unheedingmaybe you can find a PPA with it05:47
ewetI've been trying to, without any luck though ...05:48
koegsewet: i can install xfce4-taskbar-plugin with apt-get...05:53
ewetwait a minute .. am I silly05:53
unheedingyou are very silly05:53
ewetwell, no: E: Unable to locate package xfce4-taskbar-plugin05:58
unheedingyeah i get the same thing here05:59
ewetI mean the source is making it very easy to build it on xubuntu but I'd rather know what's going on and install a package ...06:01
koegsewet: the standard-taskbar ist shipped with the xfce4-panel06:02
koegsdo you want to have to taskbar which behaves like the win7 superbar?06:02
koegshttp://git.xfce.org/panel-plugins/xfce4-taskbar-plugin/06:02
ewetkoegs, yep, that's the one I want06:03
koegsthat version has never been shipped with ubuntu, i think06:04
ewetyeah ... that would make a lot of sense -- hence my question ;-)06:05
koegshm, i have installed it via "git clone" and "checkinstall"06:06
ewetkoegs, that's what I am about to do - the only thing I really need to know is: does it build on xubuntu 12.10? because the only info I read in README is about 12.04 ...06:07
koegsewet: it does build, only difference from README, i would rather use "sudo checkinstall" instead of "sudo make install"06:08
ewetokay makes sense06:09
ewetworking :)06:33

msxhi all! does anybody know why in the Xubuntu's 12.10 beta 2 there were this issue and how devs resolved it: "Duplicated partitions might be shown at Thunar sidebar and desktop"07:47
msxi'm having now the same issue on another distro with kernel 3.0 and can't figure out what's happening or how to solve it :P07:48
frk7zexcuse me, anyone know how fix this issue?: "Duplicated partitions might be shown at Thunar sidebar and desktop"08:40
apm1i need some advice/tech support regarding a specific package09:28
apm1! info intel microcode09:28
apm1what does intel-microcode actually do ?09:28
apm1i accidently installed it , and then removed it ? any chance i might brick my processor ?09:29
ashNOPapm1, as i know its some "firmware" updates for cpu, for example i download it from amd off. site for my cpu09:33
apm1ashNOP, ok and if you uninstall it does it have chance to brick the cpu ?09:34
ashNOPapm1, its not of course09:35
ashNOPapm1, its feature of kernel to load cpu microcode09:36
ashNOPi guess)09:36
apm1ashNOP, ok but is it installed as a kernel module or as a firmware inside some ROM in the cpu ?09:37
ashNOPapm1, i never interesting with it, try to find in web more about it09:38
apm1ashNOP, well i tried googling it and i couldn't get a straight theory about it ? :(09:39
apm1read the wikipedia page for it , a few topics from stackexchange and other forums but nothing specific :(09:39
ashNOPapm1, did u try to ask in irc channels?09:40
ashNOPapm1, #kernel or something like that09:40
apm1ashNOP, i did no body has an answer yet09:41
Paul_46does 12.10 not support cedarview (I believe - d2xx/n2xx integrated graphics controller) graphics atm?10:53
BelseruskHi. If I have "unace" and "unrar" installed -- do I also need "unrar-free" and "unace-nonfree"? I am using Linux Mint 13 Xfce.11:37
knomeBelserusk, this is not the mint support channel.11:38
Belseruskknome, But is would apply to Xubuntu also.11:38
Belseruskknome, the packages are on both.11:38
knomeBelserusk, the answer is: depends on the rar packages you have. but pleae acknowledge that it's still not the mint support channel.11:39
Belseruskknome, If I posted the Q and did not add the "Linux Mint 13 Xfce" part, you'd answer my q better?11:40
knomeBelserusk, the problem is not that we don't want to help any people out. the problem is that we don't know if you can really compare xubuntu and mint xfce even if it sounded like the stuff is the same.11:42
knomeneed to go now, see you all later11:42
BelseruskBye knome11:42

unheedingkswapd0 uses 100% of one CPU in Xfce.. it doesnt do this in other desktop environments....  any ideas?17:12
sevenforallOne CPU?17:14
unheedingi have a dual core CPU17:14
unheedingand kswapd0 is using 50% (or one core)17:14
unheedingmemory usage isn't even that high17:14
sevenforallOn a sidenote, a single core isn't 'filled' with tasks with the 2nd core waiting to take over when it's full. If a process is using 50% of your CPU's capacity, it may be using both cores just as likely.17:16
sevenforallAnyway, I'll have a look at your issue17:17
sevenforallKnown issue, apparently17:17
unheedingI can't kill the process or anything17:17
Andy80hi :)17:17
knomeunheeding, can't kill, you mean even with sudo kill -s kill [pid] ?17:17
Andy80how can I set gedit as default editor in Xubuntu, instead of Leafpad?17:18
unheedingi haven't tried -s, i've tried -917:18
unheedingi wasn't aware -s was an option17:18
sevenforallAndy80: If you're not using leafpad, best is just to remove it ("sudo apt-get remove leafpad" for example)17:19
* sevenforall quickly installs Xubuntu in a VM because he noticed his knowledge is starting to lack17:19
toraxI prefer "apt-get purge" If i just want to get rid of some software17:20
Andy80sevenforall: ok, just removed, but I can I know or set what is the new default editor?17:20
Andy80oh nope... it looks like the default one is automatically gedit :)17:21
Andy80thanks!17:21
sevenforallAndy80: If you remove leafpad, it will indeed automatically pick the next best option which would be Gedit in your case ;-)17:22
sevenforalltorax: I must admit I haven't really looked into the differences between remove, purge and autoremove17:22
toraxsevenforall: purge removes everything, including config files17:24
toraxso basicly if you screw up just purge the software, reinstall and start over :P17:24
sevenforallThought so17:26
sevenforallThanks17:26
sevenforallAnd what about autoremove?17:26
unheedingit removes the packages that are no longer required that were installed as dependancies17:28
unheedingiirc17:28
sevenforallHow does it know they are no longer needed?17:41
sevenforallDoes it keep a record of which programs depend on them?17:41
toraxyes17:42
toraxnot sure on details, but something like that17:42
xubuntu370  I had winxp on this box and it failed. thinking it was corrupted os I tried to reinstall, and it failed.. but then i tried to install Ubuntu, and I could not run it from the usb or from the hd.. did the mem test and found out one of my 512mb sticks (had 2) failed. I removed the bad one and was able to install ubuntu. but it was sluggish. I was trying to quickly setup my packet radio for Hurricane Sandy.. downloaded the Serial P18:11
