r4yMy sister in law is having a computer setup by a friend and she want Ubuntu on it. We want to go with Ubuntu 10.04. The guy is setting up Windows but I am not sure what version. I have been thinking about having Windows kept for her if she perhaps needs it and having Ubuntu duel booted with it. Will one mess up the other?, Does one have to be installed before the other?, and if one messes up...05:22
r4y...the other which one is more likely to get messed up?05:22
r4yI know flood, sorry.05:23
r4yI have never duel booted Linux with Windows.05:24
r4yWhich will be on one hard drive05:25
r4yThe guy she has working on her computer was a computer expert from Dell who had a accident and now has a messed up back and is retired.05:26
r4yObi-Wan your my only hope, LOL05:28
Unit193Generally Windows will overwrite whatever MBR may be on there, while Ubuntu should detect windows and add it to grubs listing.05:29
Unit193As far as partitioning?  Whatever the user sets up is what will happen.05:30
r4yAh, so install Windows first?05:30
r4yI thought we could change the boot sequence for which one loads first after installing05:30
Unit193Yep, but why 10.04?05:30
Unit193https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DualBoot/Windows05:31
r4yWe are used to Ubuntu and that was the last setup she had.05:31
r4yI just don't like Unity and I think Ubuntu has stepped backwards in some ways, but it still works05:32
Unit193https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases EOL in April.05:32
r4yI have tried installin Gnome on Ubuntu 12.04 even to see if I would like it but I don't, an also in doing so it has to install updates for both Gnome and Unity05:33
Unit193Unless you uninstall Unity, yep.05:35
r4yI like being able to drag and drop icons onto the panels, desktop, and miss the applets, and I miss having more control over the colors in appearance, and miss the icon themes I have for Gnome which I didn't try. And if I use Gnome on Ubuntu 12 shut down is gone and the menu is setup a little different05:36
r4yI guess that's about it for me05:37
r4yThe only problem I need to know the answer to for Ubuntu 10 is this:05:37
holsteinxfce is very gnome2 like in feel05:37
holsteinxubuntu is a nice emplementation of both XFCE and ubuntu i sthink05:38
holsteinthink*05:38
r4yWhen I play videos on the internet they skip like someone is hitting pause and play over and over, someone said it was because I installed the 3D graphics driver, but I don't know how to disable it on the fly05:38
r4yShe will not be using the 3D graphics driver so I hope she doesn't have this problem05:39
r4yother then that Ubuntu 10 is great05:39
r4yI haven't tried XFCE05:39
r4yI've known about it for a long time though05:39
r4yHow do I disable the 3D graphics driver to only use when I feel like using it without uninstalling it?05:40
holsteinr4y: you can script something that swaps in a different xorg.conf05:41
holsteinnot an easy way though.. i would try 12.04, and see if the drivers are better05:41
r4yO, great05:41
holsteinits likely flash anyways05:41
r4yI should have known05:41
holsteini usually try the chrome browser.. the actual chrome browser.. since on the 32bit versions, flash is included05:41
r4yWell, that means I need to study the X11 file again05:42
holsteinr4y: or just try 12.0405:42
r4yOK, since I like Ubuntu 10 I should try chrome. I am not used to Chrome and have known about it as well. It's just that I would need to understand how to replace the add-ons I have. I remember using Chrome and not liking it but mostly because I wasn't used to it05:44
r4yI like Firefox05:44
holsteinyou can like and use what you want.. the fact is, for 10.04, and other linux/ubuntu version (32bit) chrome is the only way to have a current flash version05:45
holsteini always suggest it as a troubleshooting step.. using the words "try" and "see if it helps, and go from there"05:46
r4yMaybe change is tuff, but change can be a good thing. OK, TY for the input you guys have given me so far05:46
holsteinat least, you can stop mucking about with drivers.. and just move on to flash, or avoiding flash05:46
holsteinim still not suggesting you change browersers05:46
r4yHa ha, when I was told that the 3D graphics driver was the problem, I tried unstalling it and ended up uninstalling to many things, and I couldn't get back into Ubuntu, so I went through fail safe graphic barely somehow, then learned how to install all the needed packages using Snaptic Package Manager which I made a text doc ofr future reference05:48
holstein!tty05:49
ubot2To get to the TTY terminals 1-6, use the keystroke ctrl + alt + F1-F6 respectively (Alt+F7 will get you back to your graphical login).  To change the resolution for your TTY, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ChangeTTYResolution05:49
holsteinthat can help determine whats up... and sudo apt-get install whatever you need05:49
r4yI understand that I can use both browsers if I want. I have also tried Opera but the skipping problem was still there with Opera. I should try Chrome again and see05:50
r4yGive me a sec and I will drop a pastebin of the text file05:50
holsteinyou should try, specifically, the pacakged version of flash chrome supplies.. its the only updated flash linux has access to05:50
holsteinim not suggesting you use chrome at all. you can install it.. test, and remove it right after, knowing that you dont need to mess with any graphics driver05:51
r4yI know, that's what's great05:52
r4yhttp://paste.ubuntu.com/1341828/05:52
r4yI named it: re-installing needed packages05:53
r4yTY for the link and info05:55
r4yI should try XFCE. There is always VMWare06:00
r4yTY for the other link as well on duel booting. It's good to know what Windows being installed before Ubuntu is before then the other way around because the guy working on her computer has likely already installed Windows from what I am guessing06:02
r4yI meant to use the word better not before06:03
r4yThe second before. Well, anyways I should go, TY very much. You were helpful as always.06:05

c_yan_Hi there. Have a question about Conky on Ubuntu 12.10. Can I make changes to conky.conf? Or do I HAVE to create a conky.rc file and make changes there. If so, why?19:59
holsteini would just back up the originals and play around20:00
holsteini use a conky.rc...20:00
c_yan_Thanks, holstein. When you say originals, do you mean conky.conf?20:00
holsteinc_yan_: to either20:00
c_yan_Got it. I'm trying to explain how to tweak the conky set up for new users and most places suggest the conky.rc route. But if you backup conky.conf and make changes to that, it seems a little more intuitive to me. Just want to make sure I'm not missing something big.20:02
acolytetojippityGreetings!  I'm having trouble installing netbeans on 12.10.  Does anyone here have ank knowledge of such things?21:45
