=== Kamilion|ZNC is now known as Kamilion [07:55] Hi there. Is anyone around who could help me with some performance issues/questions in Lubuntu? [07:58] Here is a report of my system specs: http://pastehtml.com/view/cij0kq2im.html [07:58] I'm wondering if I should expect this system to capably run standard definition youtube videos, and to be able to play flash games on Lubuntu 11.10. I am also wondering if upgrading to 12.04 or 12.10 would improve or decrease performance. [07:59] I also have no sound at the moment, and I believe I may be lacking a proper graphics driver. Additional drivers does not list anything, and I'm not familiar enough with this operating system to take it much further without help [08:00] i'd say yes, you should be able to play sd youtube vids, and play flash games. [08:01] i don't believe you'd see too much of a performance increase between 12.04 to 12.10 unless a driver update related to your system had been applied.. [08:02] I tried Xubuntu 12.04 previously, which ran worse [08:02] And had a lot of graphical issues [08:03] From my experiences Lubuntu ran better than Xubuntu. [08:03] At the moment, youtube videos are very choppy and facebook games are very difficult to play [08:03] Do you have any ideas on how I might achieve better performance? [08:04] Or how I might perhaps get a better graphics driver? (The way some things are loading visually just seems like a display driver issue based on my experience, but I can't be certain) [08:04] Which webbrowser are you using? Did you download the Flash Plugin from Adobe's page? [08:04] I checked the box to include third party software, and assumed that that would have downloaded it [08:04] I assume that I have it, since I am able to watch youtube videos [08:04] But maybe not the latest version [08:05] that should be the same exact build iirc. [08:05] if there were graphic updates for your card, it would appear as an update for anything else. [08:06] via update manager [08:06] So there isn't perhaps some sort of legacy driver or something that I would have to manually acquire? [08:06] It just seems like this system is not performing as well as it should [08:09] I wouldn't know if there were a legacy driver or not; according to your page the module "i915Intel Graphics" was loaded. perhaps someone else may chime in on your issues soon. [08:09] Alright, thanks. Maybe the integrated graphics has been installed correctly then [08:10] are you most familiar with windows? if so, what resolution did you run under on there and did youtube videos and flash playback fine on there? [08:11] About the resolution, I have lowered it a lot now. I had already done that but it seems to be defaulting to the one that's listed on my specs page by default [08:11] And yes, I am a certified A+ professional with a lot of experience with windows [08:11] I'm just brand new to linux basically [08:11] Ah ok. safe to assume no performance increase with lowering resolution? [08:11] It seems a little better actually [08:12] how old is this pc? onboard video? [08:12] The resolution was probably about as high as it is now, and in windows this machine was able to run youtube videos [08:12] And facebook games were not great [08:12] Probably about the same, actually [08:12] I was hoping that I would see better performance in a light linux distribution. I'm going to give this machine to a coworker for her nephew to play facebook games on [08:13] And yes, the graphics are onboard [08:13] It's a very old machine [08:13] Bought in 2005 I think [08:14] i'd imagine that, in terms of what the gpu can do, it should be equal or slightly better on linux [08:14] Yeah, I was hoping for slightly better [08:14] you should see mostly an increase in the amount of ram free as a big plus. [08:15] I believe facebook games used to run a bit choppy [08:15] I was hoping that the slight choppiness would smooth out in linux [08:15] Yeah, RAM certainly doesn't seem to be an issue [08:15] the system overall in terms of execution of software should be better too. [08:15] It boots and shuts down much better [08:15] I can open a lot of tabs without issue [08:16] I just wish I could squeeze enough performance out of this machine to accomplish what it's intended for [08:16] Do you have any idea what the bottleneck might be? [08:16] I'm not sure it would be the garbage celeron CPU or the onboard graphics [08:16] if it* [08:17] let me take a look at the onboard [08:17] K [08:18] what model number is the pc? [08:19] nvm i see it in the paste html [08:19] Dimension-2400 [08:19] Yup [08:20] While you're here, is there a way to open a terminal window at the location that's in the foreground of the GUI? [08:20] In order to easily run commands from the required directory without having to cd a whole bunch? [08:22] pretty sure there's a way to do it, not fully sure. [08:22] K [08:26] Any idea what to do about my sound not working, by the way? [08:28] its kinda tough to say if its the gpu or cpu [08:28] this link helped me with sound. http://askubuntu.com/questions/106224/no-sound-after-lubuntu-installation [08:29] i installed pulseaudio and pavucontrol [08:29] that allowed me to utilize the taskbars audio tray icon. [08:29] K thanks I'll give that a try [08:30] np [08:30] Sound did not work in Xubuntu either, for the record [08:30] And in Ubuntu I'll never know, since all I got was a wallpaper after installing.. haha [08:32] that may have had something to do with Unity and the older onboard video [08:32] Yeah [08:32] but i'd imagine an error message should have arose [08:32] So for output devices, all I have is dummy output [08:32] Doesn't seem like I have a driver [08:34] you tried the pulse audio and pavucontrol? [08:34] Yup [08:34] And that's all that's listed in pulse audio [08:36] shouldn't you be looking under input? [08:36] I believe that would be a microphone [08:36] Nothing there at any rate [08:37] yeah you're probably right. i'm too tired for this lol. [08:38] Haha [08:38] i think that link would be very useful for other things to try [08:38] A terminal command to list soundcards says none found [08:39] hopefully someone else would be more helpful to you than i within some time. [08:39] I feel like this is a driver problem [08:39] The system does not see the audio controller at all [08:40] did any distribution of linux give you sound before? [08:40] besides lu and xubuntu [08:41] Only tried Xubuntu 12.04 and Lubuntu 11.10 [08:41] Well the first thing that I tried was Ubuntu 12.10 [08:41] I did not get any sounds, I suppose maybe I would have heard a logon sound or something [08:41] If it had been working [08:42] Though I only got as far as a wallpaper and a terminal window [08:43] one other thing to do.. [08:43] is to make sure the sound is enabled in the bios and to maybe match up your onboard sound with this: http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Matrix:Main [08:43] You know, the previous users of this had a dedicated soundcard installed, but I assumed it was only to accommodate their 7.1 system [08:43] But maybe they installed it because the onboard audio failed [08:44] And the BIOS settings are good unfortunately [08:44] I wouldn't have a clue what the name of the onboard sound would be [08:44] But maybe I should postpone the sound thing until I ask them about it tomorrow [08:44] It might just be dead on a hardware level [08:46] if you find out the model of the mobo, you should be able to find out specific details from there using google by typing in the model # of the mobo [08:46] So in your opinion, would you say that a Core 2 duo system @ ~2.0GHz with 2GB of RAM would be more than capable of running the latest Lubuntu or Xubuntu kernels? [08:46] Capably enough to watch youtube videos and play facebook games with no issues? [08:47] yes, there should be absolutely no issues with any basic usage [08:48] K [08:48] And woah, I just got some weird graphical glitches [08:48] Black screen for couple seconds, then my IRC tab got separated to a different window [08:49] Had blocks of screen loading all over the place individually [08:49] This is the type of thing that was happening in xubuntu as well [08:49] no idea if this is related.. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1746497 [08:51] Looks like it [08:51] perhaps you dont have an i915 in this system and this module is getting loaded for some reason.. off guess. [08:51] Seems like I may be SOL with this machine though [08:51] Well, I have another system with almost identical specs kicking around [08:51] Maybe I'll just give that one a shot tomorrow [08:51] if you can idle maybe hang out and see what someone else thinks. [08:52] but i need to get some sleep. I wish you luck with your issue. [08:52] issues* [08:52] Can't idle because I need to plug the regular computer back into this monitor for the morning, or I'm going to have some angry people.. haha [08:52] I will check back tomorrow though [08:52] Thanks for the help === cdoublejj_ is now known as cdoublejj [11:54] hello all [11:54] someone (maybe) can help me with puppy? [11:54] im running it live from usb [11:55] i want to install it [11:55] but when installer starts, [11:55] and ask me for image file [11:55] i point it to /dev/sdb1 (usb stick) [11:55] it cant see it [11:55] and wants me to mount again [12:40] is setting up samba shares the same on lubuntu as ubuntu. I'm assuming it is. If so I was planning to follow http://www.unixmen.com/howto-install-and-configure-samba-share-in-ubuntu/ instructions [14:03] kingfisher64: should be the same, exepct for the nautilus parts [14:37] hello [14:37] i have a problem [14:37] my wireless connection on asus eeepc 1015bx keeps conecting and disconecting [14:37] what should i do? [14:42] adytza23: i blacklisted the open module and installed the other [14:42] !broadcom [14:42] Help with Broadcom bcm43xx can be found at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Driver/bcm43xx [14:42] 02:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4313 802.11b/g/n Wireless LAN Controller (rev 01) [14:43] https://sites.google.com/site/mtrons/howtos/eeepc-1015pn is what i referenced mostly, assuming that is the same wifi hardware [14:43] if not, i would do the same.. try a different driver.. [14:44] my laptop has Atheros AW-NE785H wireless card [14:45] and it keeps conecting and discoencting [14:45] :( [14:45] you can always try the windows drivers with ndisgtk [14:45] adytza23: i would test with different access points [14:47] http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2035007 [14:47] hmmm.... [17:01] was following this tut (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1623346&highlight=samba) holstein on lubuntu - win 7 sharing. I basically want to backup my laptop to desktop. Done what was suggested but win 7 isn't picking up lubuntu share and vice versa. Do you have any suggestions? Many thanks [17:01] sudo apt-get install openssh-server [17:01] from windows: install winscp and use that to move files [17:14] right bioterror, i'll look into openssh-server. I use http://www.bitvise.com/index client. Quicker than winscp. [17:16] thanks [17:23] bioterror++ [19:05] hello, i need help [19:05] i messed up with xrandr [19:05] and suddenly my system fonts become too small [19:05] i can vearly read [19:05] *bearly [19:05] just chrome fonts are ok [19:06] terminal, menus [19:06] all fonts are 6 px i think [19:06] please, save me, i don't want to reinstall [19:06] i just installed new system [19:07] *barely [19:07] lol [19:13] anyone? [19:13] Zuperman: Install arandr or lxrandr and undo whatever you did. [19:13] Or, open the preferences or system tools then "Display" [19:13] yes? [19:14] no, general resolution is ok [19:14] just fonts are small [19:56] hello, i have this output when i try to sudo X -configure [19:56] number of detected screens does not match number of detected devices [19:56] i have only one monitor... and graphic card [20:00] hi everybody ! i have a question related to lubuntu software manager, is it possible to manage add-ons of installed applications ? [20:03] mircea_cj: just depends... its a software manager, so if the addons come in the repos or added sources or ppas, you'll see them there [20:03] if not, you do it through the specific application [20:04] on ubuntu software manager you have them right there, you can install or delete them, i thought...that lubuntu software manager has that feature [20:05] mircea_cj: you can install the main software manager if you prefer it [20:06] i prefer lubuntu software manager, it doesn't matter at preferences if i change to expert mode, it never saves the configuration [20:07] or anything i change there [20:12] anyway, thanks for the help holstein
