[00:15] Hey, I'm having a bit (a lot) of trouble here >,> === bgs101 is now known as bgs100 [00:42] mof920, ok === dniMretsaM_away is now known as dniMretsaM [03:52] hey guys and gals, is there a way to wait to mount shares automatically after one of the network interfaces "goes live". It takes between 5-15 minutes for that interface to be happy before I can mount anything. If I knew bash or python, I guess I could poll the interface until it is happy then mount….grrrrrr [03:56] is there a "standard way" to do this? [04:13] javatexan, "live" is a poorly supported notion unfortunately [04:13] javatexan, you could hook into the network event in upstart [04:13] but thats no guarantee that there will be routes anywhere [04:14] gotcha, I will try a couple of things based on that [04:32] I need help installing my printer which is Samsung CLX-3185. Ubuntu does not have the right drivers. I downloaded the following drivers from Samsung's website: PrintSettingUtility, Smartpanel and UnifiedLinuxDriver. I have been unsucceful in installing these drivers in Ubuntu 12.10. What should I do? Anyone able to give me a helping hand? [04:33] hello all [13:11] configuring squid help pls. [15:27] I have a couple older PCs that don't handle Ubuntu 12.10 with Unity too well and I want to use the Hybryd di.stro on them to see if they'll work on my LAN. I have a couple questions regarding the installation. Am I in the right place?on [17:23] hi :) [17:27] how can I see my hardware with ubuntu 12.10? [17:28] something similar to piriform's speccy [17:28] or...Windows device manager (im just looking for the graphics card and driver version ) [17:54] hotsauce1: i use lspci or lsusb [17:54] !info lspci [17:54] 'maverick' is not a valid distribution: [17:54] !lspci [17:54] Factoid 'lspci' not found [17:54] lol [17:54] hotsauce1: open a terminal and run lspci [18:00] ok holstein [18:01] first though...how do i open a terminal? dash home or system settings won't do it? [18:01] hotsauce1: there is an application called "terminal [18:01] however you launch and find apps.. just find and launch it... or [18:01] !tty | hotsauce1 [18:01] hotsauce1: To get to the TTY terminals 1-6, use the keystroke ctrl + alt + F1-F6 respectively (Alt+F7 will get you back to your graphical login). To change the resolution for your TTY, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ChangeTTYResolution [18:18] wow! hahahaha [18:19] got stuck in the terminal and couldn't get out...rebooted...then forgot how to get back into IRC...I am more of a beginner than I thought :P [18:20] is there a way to ensure my IRC program (chatzilla) boots up everytime my PC does? [18:20] !tty [18:20] To get to the TTY terminals 1-6, use the keystroke ctrl + alt + F1-F6 respectively (Alt+F7 will get you back to your graphical login). To change the resolution for your TTY, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ChangeTTYResolution [18:20] Alt+F7 will get you back [18:21] sweet [18:21] hotsauce1: i would add whatever you want to the autostart [18:21] trying...just wondering where firefox is stored on ubuntu LTS [18:22] stored? [18:22] anyways...so the command for system specs was? [18:22] startup applications -> add -> browse [18:22] ^^ is best way to ensure applications auto boot upon PC power on? [18:23] /usr/bin is where they are "stored", but i dont think that what you are looking for [18:23] hotsauce1: i use kupfer [18:23] !kupfer [18:23] Factoid 'kupfer' not found [18:23] !info kupfer [18:23] 'maverick' is not a valid distribution: [18:23] our bot needs attention... [18:23] !info !info [18:23] hotsauce1: kupfer and gnome-do are in the repos and quite popular [18:24] hotsauce1: i dont like things "auto booting" on startup [18:24] hotsauce1: the way is to add them to the startup applications list [18:24] hotsauce1: could be called "sessions" in the menu [18:24] so add kupfer to startup, then add chatzilla or whatever to kupfer? [18:25] hotsauce1: you just use kupfer.. you dont need to add it [18:25] repo=repository right? [18:25] hotsauce1: lets relax and take a step back,.. one question at a time [18:25] :) [18:25] hotsauce1: a repo is a repository.. meaning its easily available.. you just search *any* package manager and install in [18:26] sudo apt-get install kupfer.. or search synaptic or the software center [18:27] hotsauce1: if you want to auto start an application (not auto boot) the name of the program you are looking for is "Startup Applications" [18:27] you launch "startup applications" and add what you like there [18:27] hotsauce1: i test the launch commands in the terminal.. [18:28] hotsauce1: i suggested gnome-do or kupfer because i was assuming you might just be having a hard time finding applications [18:28] i am going to check out kupfer, it sounds like it could be extremely useful to become familiar with. [18:28] so my question is how do i find "chatzilla" in the startup applications "add" function? you said chatzilla isnt really stored anywhere...I guess I need a command that starts running firefox add-ons? [18:29] hotsauce1: i would just add chatzilla, if that is an app..i thought it was a plugin for firefox? [18:29] !info package manager [18:29] 'manager' is not a valid distribution: [18:30] it is a plugin for firefox [18:30] hotsauce1: i said, applications are stored in /use/bin, i didnt say applicaions are not stored anywhere.. i said that is likely not what you are looking for [18:30] hotsauce1: then, you would look at firefox.. and maybe set it up in a tab.. or as the home page [18:31] hotsauce1: i think http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2012/07/how-to-install-ubuntus-new-web-apps-feature is also an option, though i have not tested it [18:32] hotsauce1: its a matter of potentially adding a 'webapp'. since chatzilla is not a local application, its a plugin to firefox [18:33] i see [18:33] "webapp" is pointing me in the right direction [18:33] thanks for the vocab :) [18:33] hotsauce1: it would be the equvilent of saying 'i want the application ebay to automatically startup when i bootup'... the answer is, ebay is not an application, but you can make a webapp, or a shortcut [18:33] sometimes its a matter of knowing the terms to search for [18:35] what is the command for system specs in the terminal? I lost it since I had 2 reboot [18:36] hotsauce1: lspci is what i use [18:38] hotsauce1: you can try installing hardinfo [18:39] this might not mean anything...but "What is lspci?" [18:39] hotsauce1: its a list hardware command [18:39] lsusb for usb [18:40] try that GUI i listed [18:40] it lists all components connected to the pci bus [18:40] sudo apt-get install hardinfo [18:42] is there a way to minimize a terminal (shrink the window?) [18:43] the (-) in the top left corner [18:45] i see nothing [18:45] top left corner is black...everything is black in my terminal (ctrl alt f1)...and no mouse cursor [18:45] is terminal the right word for...command line? [18:46] command line "window" = terminal?? [18:48] oh, you're in a virtual console? [18:48] ctrl+alt+f7 should get you back to X [18:49] ah so no way to minimize a virtual console and move it around in the same way I move around firefox tabs? [18:51] btw ("Your search query "kupfer" didn't return any results. Please change some terms and refer to HelpOnSearching for more information." from ubuntu-wiki) kind of made me laugh :P [18:52] hotsauce1: are you asking for someone here to change something? [18:53] hotsauce1: i would search for kupfer in the package manager of your choice, or just search google to learn more about it and see if you'd like to use it [18:53] hotsauce1: sudo apt-get install kupfer [18:53] ahh i see [18:53] is "sudo apt-get update" relevent after my fresh install? [18:53] hotsauce1: you can tap the super key and type "terminal" [18:54] hotsauce1: then, you'll have a resizable terminal window [18:55] what is the super key? i am on a dell laptop...Im not sure what you mean [18:56] or hit Ctrl+Alt+T unless you've bound that to some other action [18:56] the key that typically has a windows logo on it [18:56] between ctrl and alt [18:56] hotsauce1: the windows key.. it brings up the main menu.. the dash? [18:56] neither work to resize my virtual console [18:56] hotsauce1: correct [18:56] hotsauce1: that will not do anything to the vitrual console [18:57] hotsauce1: this will allow you to open "terminal".. a terminal applicatoin that you can resize [18:57] o cool [18:57] ctrl alt t :) [19:27] how can i find out how much RAM my system has? I am in ubuntu 12.04 [19:28] hotsauce1: top.. free -m ...the bios.. that gui system tool i linked earlier.. sudo apt-get hardinfo [19:28] ill get hardinfo, thanks :) === yofel_ is now known as yofel
